This relatively new artisan ice cream store launched last year by French-born owner, Yann Rey, who moved to the Mother City to open his ice cream ‘gallery’. Here, the artistry of ice cream takes top priority. Production happens right behind the freestanding counter in what can best be described as a laboratory rather than a kitchen! Unframed’s product and recipe developer, Stephane Auge, is not just any ice cream master, she’s won the Meilleur Ouvrier De France for ice cream (the equivalent of Michelin star, but awarded to craftsmen). “Our ice cream includes all-natural tastes that are sometimes subtle and sometimes complex, always with an obsession towards the perfect texture.”

Lick your way through flavours that include peanut butter, Nuttikrust (based on the biscuit), sea salt chocolate and a caramel-flavoured burnt white chocolate (both chocolate options made with Valrhona chocolate). And, for vegans (who always have the worst choices!), think beetroot chocolate ginger, sweet lemon, lusty coconut, and rouge rooibos cappuccino. The new vegan chocolate is also out of this world. Try some magnificently smooth sorbets too, from a refreshing lime, lemon and basil, to grapefruit with timut pepper from Nepal (a mild, citrusy flavoured pepper). Possibly one of the coolest games on the planet right now, Mario Kart has never failed to deliver in the entertainment category and the latest edition goes further than all the Mario Karts before it. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the perfect combination of old and new, there’s great synergy between what was great about all the previous versions and all that is new about the 2017 edition. The graphics are incredible, the soundtrack is fantastic, the choice of characters is wonderful – we simply don’t have enough superlatives to aptly describe how much fun this game is.
FORZA HORIZON 3: HOT WHEELS Another racing game in our list of best games, but again, this is no ordinary racing game. The Forza franchise is famous for bringing us the coolest cars, the best tracks and the most realistic driving simulation out there, but the Forza Horizon 3 Hot Wheels edition is an expansion pack to the original game that’s quite literally packed with fun. All the sweetest Hot Wheel rides you can imagine are brought to life in this game, turning miniature fun into life-sized excitement. You get to race through the greatest environments imaginable to turn childhood adventures into gaming reality. This is another game that promises endless hours of entertainment and fun for the whole family.

The sequel to Splatoon, Splatoon 2 is a non-violent teambased shooting game based around colourful environments and funky characters in a territorial battle to paint the town. Although there is a single player mode, the real genius behind Splatoon 2 is the multiplayer online games and all the different events you can partake in, in order to own your hill and win the day. The basic idea behind Splatoon is that you have a paint gun (or various forms thereof) and you need to shoot various targets, enemies or areas to win the game. We had the most fun playing in ‘turf war’ game mode, where the aim was to get behind enemy lines and paint as much of the arena in your team’s colours. The team with the most colour on the floor and walls wins. Simple, original and just pure fun.

Every one of us has a dancing queen or king inside us, however, most of us just lack the confidence to get out there and dance in front of others. But that doesn’t mean we don’t love to shake our booty whenever a cool tune comes on. Just Dance 2017 turns dancing into a game and gives all of us a chance to bust a move just because we can. The game certainly isn’t a flawless execution of dance, but it’s the perfect game if you’re looking for a bit of fun. We often felt like we were crushing every move, yet the scores didn’t match; and then when we felt like we were utterly hopeless, the game would give us full marks. Just Dance 2017 would have scored much higher had it given us a few tutorials, but overall, this is a game that gets the blood pumping, so what’s not to love?

PLANET COASTER Planet Coaster is just like Sim City, but for theme parks. You build, manage and create the best possible theme park that will entertain and bedazzle your guests. These simulation games are dime a dozen, but Planet Coaster seems to offer the variety that very few other games do. There are gift shops, rollercoasters, carousels, ice cream stands and walkways which you can reposition, recolour, redesign and edit in so many ways that Planet Coaster just fails to get boring. The aim of the game is simple, as with all economic simulators; keep your customers happy, they will keep coming back and you will keep making money. The more money you have, the more rides you can build. It’s an endless circle.

Method: Preheat oven to 180oC and line baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Using a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and eggs; and sift in the flour, bicarb and cream of tartar. Mix until a smooth dough has formed. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface, wrap in plastic wrap and put in the fridge for 30 minutes. Roll the dough between two sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Cut out biscuits using Christmas-themed cutters and place on baking trays. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden. Place on wire cooling trays. Decorate with icing and your choice of sweets.

When you Google ‘the greatest cars to star in movies’ the list of candidates is jaw-dropping, albeit ridiculous. Every list seems to include the same group of classic Bond cars, the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the Mutt Cutts van from Dumb & Dumber, and the Batmobile. As epic as these lists are, none of us is likely to have ever seen, let alone driven, any of them! So we thought we’d take a look at the coolest cars to star in movies, all within the last 15 years and in production at their current manufacturer!

THE OKAVANGO DELTA A PLACE OF CONCENTRATED MAGIC The Okavango Delta should be on every safari enthusiast’s wish list and when you get there, you’ll know exactly why. A unique oasis regarded as one of Africa’s best safari destinations, this important inland wetland is a place of concentrated magic. A highlight here is having your guide manoeuvre you through reed-lined waterways in the traditional Mokoro or dugout canoe. It’s the quiet that will strike you most, and the close proximity to any game that comes down to the water to drink. There are also game drives from some camps and bush walks to be enjoyed, but this is peace personified. In the area, the Moremi Game Reserve attracts the self-drive visitors to explore its waterways and islands, the most popular being Chief’s Island and the forested Mopane Tongue peninsula, with numerous lodges and camps to choose from. This is the first reserve in Africa to be established by local residents. The reserve was proclaimed in 1963 and remains the only officially protected area of the Okavango Delta.

Boasting one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems in Africa, this is paradise for game viewing and bird watching, with both black and white rhino recently reintroduced, reinstating its status as a ‘Big Five’ reserve. Pools, pans, grasslands, plains and mopane forests offer wonderful trails for exploration, both guided or independent.

CHOBE GAME RESERVE WHERE ELEPHANTS ROAM Chobe National Park in Botswana is home to the largest elephant population in the world and 200 000 elephants are said to roam along the river that marks the place where four countries meet; Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and a tiny strip of Namibia. It’s a special place. Also known for its large herds of Cape buffalo, lions, antelopes, hippos and migrating zebras. The sunrise and sunset Chobe Boat Cruise on the river in the flat-bottomed boats offer a special experience that will have you game viewing and bird watching from the water. The skipper navigates between the long grass to point out crocodiles baking in the sun, pods of hippo curiously coming up for a closer look, and shy game peering out tentatively
from behind the trees in the reserve as they approach for an evening drink. The cormorants dry their wings in the last of the sun’s rays and water monitors can be seen skulking between the rocks. If you’re lucky, you may even hear the distinctive cry of the fish eagle to crown the moment. A gin and tonic by evening, or mug of Amarula-infused coffee in the early morning, complete the experience. In the dry season, elephants come down to the water’s edge by the hundreds, often seen holding each other’s tails with their trunks as they cross the river onto the lush islands to graze. This is a distinctly Chobe sight to behold.

Days are spent relaxing in camp chairs, reading, playing cards and watching the active lives of the resident ground squirrel. Always keeping an eye out for game, which may come by. You may even be lucky enough to have a lion come to drink water from the makeshift shower at night. Don’t be fooled though, they’re not there to make friends, and a useful tip is to keep the car doors unlocked at all times just in case he draws near and you need a safe shelter.

Nights turn black and headlamps light the way as you gather around a campfire to prepare dinner and sip on the mandatory gin and tonic, with ice if your vehicle’s well equipped with fridge and freezer. You cannot get closer to nature than this. Booking is essential and will need to be made in advance as the camps are very popular. A park ranger may drive through to check on you, but mostly you’re on your own, so take all the provisions you need, and your vehicle.
BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT The rainy season falls from November to March and promises dramatic thundershowers that cool down the hot days. May to October is the most popular time of year to visit with the grass lower for good game viewing and the water levels highest in the Delta. February is referred to by some as the “mad month”, with temperatures soaring into the 40s and little relief on offer, except of course for a cool shower or dip in the pool at your lodge.

If you don’t have a 4x4, find a friend or family member who does and head to the Mabuasehube Game Reserve in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Here in the south of the country, you’re guaranteed big skies, open pans and solitude. The recommendation here is to drive the rugged and rather wild road that traverses the park, and settle yourself at one of the camping sites that offers an A-frame shelter for shade, a shower with borehole water fresh from the ground, and a long-drop loo.

4 X 4 SELF-DRIVE SAFARI ADVENTURES There can be few more dramatic experiences than driving through pristine wilderness. It’s not for the faint-hearted, and, experience in driving in difficult conditions is a necessity! For this adventure, you will need a fully equipped 4x4 stocked with water, food, fuel and supplies to see you through any situation. You can hire a 4x4 vehicle that comes with everything you need for your journey. Petrol stations can be found in the main towns but not in the bush. You will have to calculate your petrol requirements well in advance and stock up, as the use of air-con and engaging lower gears will eat into your reserves. It’s important to note that off-road driving is prohibited in national parks in order to keep wilderness areas in pristine condition and to protect the wildlife from harm.

Fully kitted out in overalls, and equipped with helmets, torches and harnesses, you will do a little climbing, a little clamouring, a little crawling, a little mud face-painting and about one and a half hours later, emerge in an exhilarating exit on a steel rope ladder, back to the world above ground. Now for the dirty underground details – yes, it’s scary and very, very dark – the kind where you can’t see your hand in front of you and you hang onto your trusted headlamp for dear life. Dare you decide to turn it off for a thrill, you’re in for an all-consuming darkness that’s difficult to prepare for. It’s also pretty wet down there. In fact, the drops that work their way over the rock face are said to take about six months to work their way from the surface. And, if you stop for a minute and listen, you’ll hear the trickle of water into pools you cannot see. A hundred years ago, Bat Cave was full of calcified lime-rich deposits that took thousands of years to form and only one stick of dynamite to remove. Miners raped the cave for the lime. But the water will continue to drip down from the surface, as it always has, and the formations will grow back again over time. It’s a truly magical experience to know that under our feet is a place so complex, so quiet, so tranquil, so still. And one that also boasts some incredible structures, a raw natural beauty, lifetimes of history and lots of bats! You don’t see them during the day but stand in the main tunnel at 6pm and it’s like bat rush hour! Let’s not forget the adrenalin surges brought on by those tight squeezes and the moment you begin to exit the cave, where you suddenly shift from darkness to light. Cavers call this ‘the twilight zone’ and many of them are hooked on that very moment when the sky pours in through the roof. You may not be a dedicated caver, but if you’re happy to leave your designer gear at home and get down and dirty, then this great adventure, fit for the whole family, will almost always end with huge smiles, dusty faces and fun, happy memories.

International Coastal Cleanup is the world’s largest annual volunteer effort to reduce waste from our coastlines, waterways and seas. Now running in South Africa for the past 21 years, it serves as an ideal platform to raise awareness on the issue of marine debris and encourages people across all walks of life to actively clean their environment.

housands of South Africans took the time, made the effort and flocked to their local beaches to pick up and remove litter. Plastics SA coordinates the ‘Clean-ups’ that take place in the three Cape provinces, on the beaches as well as at various rivers inland. KZN Marine Waste Network members take responsibility for co-ordinating Clean-ups at major beaches in KwaZulu-Natal. To date, nearly 12 million people have been part of the world’s biggest volunteer effort to protect the ocean, and South Africa is a major part of this success story!
The Clean-up differs from other clean-ups as it is, in major part, an audited clean-up where all material collected is recorded to give an overall picture of the international state of our coastlines and seas. The data reveals details of items collected, but the top ten of these don’t change much yearon-year. Microplastic pieces are by far the most collected item, with bottle tops in second position. Unfortunately, when it comes to the need for a clean and safe environment, proper waste management and non-littering, the
number of caring people is still outweighed by an uncaring society. “We need to muster all the energy we can to ensure a cleaner environment, as the material that survives a period of being exposed to environmental energy will always be plastics. Nature does not recognise plastics and glass, whereas paper (and, to some degree, metal) degrades over time when it is exposed,” explains Sustainability Manager of Plastics SA, John Kieser. Approximately 75% of ocean litter is derived from land-based waste. Without effective

GHOST TOUR SPOOKY ENCOUNTERS PILGRIM’S REST This totally unique excursion provides a fascinating insight into life (and death) in the historic gold mining village of Pilgrim’s Rest during its heyday in the Gold Rush. Both an interesting and somewhat eerie experience, the tour happens in the grand double-story Alanglade House, that is believed to be haunted. Built back in 1915, it was once a family home but is now a museum. The tour starts as the sun sets and you begin to hear the tragic tales of the family that once lived there. During the tour, uncanny and inexplicable occurrences are common. After knocking back a tot of sherry for some Dutch courage, the tour continues to the town cemetery. Armed with a hurricane lamp, you’ll walk among the headstones, where you may or may not meet the ghosts of the many penniless gold diggers who once lived there. HEALTH & SAFETY SAFETY TIPS FOR OCEAN SWIMMING Heading to the beach for the holidays? Here are some important swimming safety tips to keep in mind!
KNOW THE BASICS 1. Never go into the ocean if you can’t swim! Strong swimming skills are essential in the ocean’s unpredictable environment. 2. Always swim in a designated swimming area supervised by lifeguards and stay close to the shore so you can be seen and rescued quickly if need be. 3. Daytime is the safest time to swim in the sea. Visibility is low in the early morning hours and at dusk, and predatory animals tend to move closer to the shore at night.

• Rip currents are narrow channels of fastmoving water. Instead of fighting them, swim parallel to the shore with the current, and angle yourself slowly back to land.

• Large waves are more powerful than you might think. Dive under one before it breaks. And remember, never turn your back to the ocean when you’re in the water. Rogue waves or undertow can happen at a moment’s notice.

• Shore breaks happen when a wave breaks on land, which can knock swimmers down. To avoid serious injury, stay away from beaches with rocky outcroppings or a steep slope into the water. • Inshore holes are long trenches that run parallel to the beach. They can surprise waders who are expecting shallow water. Make sure your children can swim, and stay with them in any water.
(NATIONAL SEA RESCUE INSTITUTE) • Over the 2016/17 festive season, there were 25 fatal drownings – 20 adults and 5 children (under 18). • Fifteen of the fatalities were in rip currents! NSRI rescued a total of 315 people during 172 rescue operations. Twenty-two of these people had been caught in rip currents. • The busiest days for NSRI volunteer crews were 28 December with 11 rescues, and 1 January with 20 rescues.

You’ve been outdoors for hours and suddenly you feel dizzy and lightheaded – you’re dehydrated! Heatstroke is the most severe form of dehydration and may cause fainting, hallucinations or seizures – all so easy to avoid! Drink plenty fluids, take regular breaks in the shade, and schedule vigorous outdoor activity for early morning or late afternoon, when the heat isn’t so strong. For someone suffering serious dehydration or heatstroke, get them indoors, lie them down and cool them off with ice packs and wet cloths. Someone seriously affected by heat may need intravenous fluids.
FOOD POISONING Picnics are great fun but food poisoning hits its peak in the summer months. Anything that has mayonnaise, dairy or eggs in it, and any meat products can develop some pretty nasty bacteria after only a couple of hours unrefrigerated. To prevent food poisoning, wash your hands as well as all surfaces where you’ll be preparing food. Wrap raw meat securely and keep it stored away from other food items. Make sure all meat is cooked properly (meat browns very fast on the outside, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe to eat on the inside). Keep everything refrigerated for as long as possible. Store perishable picnic items in an insulated cooler packed with ice, and follow the “last in, first out” rule.
SUNBURN With all the skin cancer warnings, you’d think we’d know better! In addition to wearing sunscreen that protects against both UVB and UVA rays, long-sleeved shirts and wide-brimmed hats, and staying out of blistering midday rays, there are things you can do to treat sunburn. Drink water or juice to replace lost fluids. Soak the burn in cool water or put a cool, wet cloth on it. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Treat itching with an over-the-counter antihistamine cream or a spray which helps any inflammatory reaction. Apply an antibiotic ointment or an aloe cream that softens and soothes the skin. But remember when it comes to the sun, prevention is always better than cure!

For most people, a bee or wasp sting is just painful, but for a few, it can be life-threatening. To stay free of bees (and other stinging insects, including mosquitoes) when outdoors, avoid heavy perfumes and scents (especially florals), wear light-coloured clothing, and guard food and sugary drinks. Most people who get stung will just have pain, tenderness, itchiness and swelling at the sting site. To treat a mild reaction, take a painkiller and an antihistamine for swelling. Icing the area can help too. But if you experience hives, itchiness and swelling over large areas of your body, tightness in the chest or trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or face, or dizziness, then go to the ER immediately!

What has the ocean taught you?
...Cape Town! No matter how much I travel, it will always be home. ...going to Canada during their winter this year. Driving from the airport to Whistler was like something out of a fairy tale, the snow was incredibly beautiful, it took my breath away.
Mainly respect, and also how unpredictable life can be – you never know what to expect as it’s forever changing – no surf session is ever the same! So because of this, to also just take everything as it comes – I try not to overthink things and to just make the best of every situation thrown at me.
I never travel without…
Things that make me happy are…
...my teddy – he doubles up as an amazing aeroplane pillow! Also, my surfboards, bikinis and wetsuits.
Little things like family, palm trees, sunsets, sunrises, sunshine, seeing the joy in people’s eyes when experiencing the ocean or surfing for the first time, good waves, puppies. I’m a simple girl and love the simple things in life.
My most unique travel experience was…
Not many people know this about me but… I am petrified of fishing hooks. I think it all started when I was young and surfed the Durban piers. Fishermen throw their lines off the pier and I was always paranoid about getting caught in the lines.
If I were not a pro surfer I’d be… I would still find a way to incorporate travelling the world into my life, I love experiencing new cultures, meeting new people and seeing beautiful places.
My favourite surf spots are… ...Kommetjie, Cape Town, surfing Long Beach every day. It may not be the best wave in the world but it’s definitely one of my favourites. Internationally, I find it so hard to choose – but to name a few: Zeros (or Point Zero) in California, Noosa and North Narrabeen in Australia, and Reunion Island.
When I’m not surfing I’m… Planning my next adventure!
My favourite local travel destination is… ...the West Coast, it has an amazing raw, untouched feel to it. There’s nothing better than taking a spur of the moment, midweek trip to Elands Bay and arriving to perfect uncrowded waves.
My pet peeve is… Rude and negative people. Sometimes people forget to just breathe and enjoy life.
One day I plan to… Can I just stay in this moment for now? I’m loving it here!

ABANTU BOOK FESTIVAL SOWETO One of the hottest events of the year for African writers and readers. The festival is held in the vibrant, historically significant township of Soweto and is designed to acknowledge the incredibly diverse literary heritage of our continent. Although the Abantu Book Festival has its focus on novels (both fact and fiction), there is also a generous portion of it dedicated to poetry performances, musical acts, workshops that deal with various aspects of writing and publishing, panel discussions, and film screenings. This makes it an exciting hub of cultural and literary activity for local South Africans. A massive feature of the Abantu Book Festival is the participation of a number of renowned poets, authors, playwrights, scholars, actors, readers, biographers and more.
