Prep your playlist for an epic road trip through the windswept landscapes of Iceland, sun-kissed California or a journey to the ends of the earth…

n the immortal words of Douglas Adams: “I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.” He knew there should always an element of ‘getting lost’ if you want to claim your road tripping credentials.
“I’m a big fan of local road trips like Route 62 and let’s not forget the Vaalie trek every December to Durbs. However, with the world
being a much smaller place than it used to be, it’s much easier for South Africans to tackle the world’s most beautiful highways and byways,” says Nicky Potgieter, Flight Centre Leisure Marketing Leader. Potgieter offers her tried-and-tested tips for three of the world’s most epic road trips:
RUTA DEL FIN DEL MUNDO – CHILE AND ARGENTINA You’ll feel like a pioneer when you travel to “the end of the world”. Epitomising the mantra of “not for sissies”, the combination of Chile’s Carretera Austral and Argentina’s Ruta 40 promises road trippers some of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth. From magnificent fjords and glaciers to ancient forests and snow-capped peaks, nature takes centre stage on this 5 500km route which winds from Santiago, Chile’s energetic capital, to Punta Arenas in the remote wilderness of Patagonia.
HIGHLIGHTS ALONG THE JOURNEY BARILOCHE A little Switzerland in South America, the ski resort of San Carlos de Bariloche is located on the foothills of the Andes and surrounded by lakes and mountains. It’s a great stop for outdoors enthusiasts, offering water sports, climbing and trekking opportunities. PUMALÍN PARK This 715 000-acre conservation area stretches from the heart of the Andes to the fjords of Chile’s Pacific Coast. The park was founded to protect the Valdivian rainforest and offers sea kayaking, hiking and climbing opportunities.

CALIFORNIA 1 – UNITED STATES Ah… the open road, the sun-kissed Californian coast and glittering Pacific – this one’s for all you movie lovers out there, and promises road trippers an opportunity to channel their inner Thelma and Louise.

One of the world’s most celebrated road trips, California 1 (aka the Pacific Coast Highway) begins in San Francisco, travelling along the coast and clinging to mountains and cliffs through Big Sur and the charming towns of Santa Barbara, Carmel and Monterey, recently depicted in the series Big Little Lies, then ends in San Diego.
Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point, San Francisco Bay
HIGHLIGHTS ALONG THE JOURNEY
NEED TO KNOW
SANTA BARBARA
BIG SUR
You’ll think you’re in Andalusia when you visit picture-perfect Santa Barbara with its characteristic palm trees and red tile roofs. It’s definitely worth stopping overnight so you can spend some time strolling along Stearns Wharf for a bite to eat.
One of the most beautiful and undeveloped stretches of coastline in the world features on this section of Highway 1 between Carmel Highlands and San Simeon. Here the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean providing stunning coastal views. SAN FRANCISCO
www.onroutemag.co.za
No visit to California would be complete without a few days in the “City on the Bay”. Spend a day strolling around Fisherman’s Wharf, take a ferry to Sausalito for a unique perspective on the city skyline or hop on a tram and admire the colour Victorian façades.
6
1. The Big Sur section of Highway 1 has been closed until recently due to mudslides caused by heavy rains. Make sure you check your route daily. 2. Take care where you stop along the way to take photos as there are sections of hairpin bends and narrow shoulders which would compromise your safety. 3. Take your time. You’ll want to soak up the California sunshine fully and enjoy the spectacular scenery. 4. Download Google Maps or buy a map for the area because cellphone reception can be intermittent along Highway 1.
FLIGHT CENTRE TRAVEL ADVICE
5. Hire a fuel-efficient vehicle as fuel along this route is very expensive.
• For the best views along Highway 1, we recommend driving north to south – not only is San Francisco a convenient place to start the drive due to flight access, you’ll also be on the ‘right’ side of the road to stop if it’s safe to take photos.
If you’re flying via the Big Apple to San Francisco, consider breaking up your journey with a couple of nights in this vibrant city, says Potgieter. “In fact, it’s always a good idea to see if you can top or tail your road trip with a couple of days to relax in a destination. Make the most of your time while you’re there.”
• South African passport holders need a tourist visa which can be applied for at the US Consulates in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. • The quickest way to get to San Francisco is to fly via Atlanta with Delta Air Lines, or New York or Washington with South African Airways.

MIGRATION MADNESS…
8
The Great Wildebeest Migration is well known to be the earth’s largest overland migration. Millions of these weird ungulates accompanied by about 200 000 zebras, instinctively traverse about 2 900 kilometres in a clockwise direction from the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area in the south of Tanzania, through the Serengeti National Park and north towards the Maasai Mara reserve in Kenya. The treacherous, and seemingly courageous, crossing by the animals of the croc-infested Mara River is visible evidence of just what a powerful force nature is. To follow are some lesser known extraordinary journeys that occur in southern Africa…
Wildebeest crossing the Mara River during the annual great migration. Every year millions will make the dangerous crossing when migrating between Tanzania and Maasai Mara in Kenya.

THE SARDINE RUN – KWAZULU-NATAL SOUTH COAST Between May and July, billions of the southern African pilchard or “sardines” spawn in the Agulhas Bank and move up into the warmer waters along the east coast of SA. The numbers are said to rival those of The Great Wildebeest Migration and create a massive feeding frenzy for other sea creatures.
This crazy phenomenon occurs between October and December. An estimated 10 million ginormous straw-coloured fruit bats with a metre-wide wingspan that inhabit the great forest of the Congo converge on a relatively small evergreen swamp forest inside Kasanka National Park in Northern Zambia. Set against the dramatic sunset skies makes it easy to mistake them for birds!

DO ELEPHANTS MIGRATE? “We know elephants can move long distances and that these movements often coincide with changes in season, but whether or not these movements were migratory was hearsay,” says Professor Rudi van Aarde, Chair of CERU and supervisor of a new study from the Conservation Ecology Research Unit (CERU) at the University of Pretoria, one of the largest studies into whether elephants really do migrate. • The study comprised of movement data collected over 15 years from 139 savanna elephants distributed across seven southern African countries.
• Of the 139 elephants, only 25 showed migratory movements.
maintain functional space and connectivity between and around national parks.
• Of the 25 elephants, only six migrated more than once during the period they were tracked.
Many migratory individuals were in protected area clusters including Etosha National Park (Namibia), Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve (Botswana), Hwange (Zimbabwe), Kruger National Park (South Africa), North and South Luangwa (Zambia), and the Quirimbas National Park (Mozambique), yet moved beyond national park boundaries (IUCN category I Parks) and 11 migrations crossed international borders.
• [Drum roll…] So, do elephants migrate? Evidently, only some elephants migrate, and possibly not every year, highlighting the adaptive and flexible behaviour of elephants, as well as their spatial needs.
Understanding elephant migration According to Michael Mole, co-author on the paper, that some elephants were able to travel more than a hundred kilometres beyond international borders speaks wonders and points to the amazing conservation initiatives employed by many governments and organisations striving to
MAGICAL MYSTERIES MOONBOWS – VIC FALLS
www.onroutemag.co.za
Many people visit Victoria Falls without knowing about one of its most impressive sights: moonbows, or lunar rainbows. These are rare natural atmospheric phenomena that occur when the moon’s light is reflected and refracted off water droplets in the air.
10
Vic Falls is one of the few places on earth where this occurs regularly due to the ever-present spray in the rainforest, and where it can be witnessed with ease. If you visit when there’s a full moon, be sure to check when Victoria Falls National Park is open for lunar rainbow tours.
This functional space and connectivity could best be seen in northern Botswana, where 15 elephants migrated. The national parks and surrounding protected Wildlife Management Areas form a vast and mostly undisturbed heterogeneous landscape. “At a time when long-distance dispersals are disappearing, this research underscores the importance of northern Botswana’s landscape
to support some of the world’s longest large mammal migration,” explains study co-author Dr. Mike Chase, director and founder of Elephants Without Borders. But the study begs the question: Are national parks big enough to adequately protect elephants? Elephants that are moving beyond protected areas are at a higher risk of poaching, and increasing human populations and habitat fragmentation are the biggest threat. So, can more be done? “Understanding the spatial requirements of species can help better inform the establishment of functional protected area networks,” says lead author, Andrew Purdon. “In this way, conservation areas across Africa can be large enough to effectively conserve large-scale ecological processes such as migration.” And that would be a reason to celebrate. Especially if you’re a migrating elephant!

JUST OFF OUR CONTINENT UNDERWATER WATERFALL – MAURITIUS Travellers who flock to Mauritius for the white beaches, stunning warm coral sea and balmy tropical weather may be too focused to notice the island that sits 2 000km off the South African coast has an extremely convincing “underwater waterfall”. This feature is, of course, counter-intuitive and is explained as an optical illusion where sand and silt have generated a dramatic underwater hill which looks like water falling underwater.

TECHNOLOGY ASSISTS IN THE DISCOVERY OF AN UNTOUCHED MOUNTAIN BASIN RAINFOREST – MOZAMBIQUE
www.onroutemag.co.za
The discovery of Mount Lico is the latest in a succession using Google Earth since 2005 by Professor Julian Bayliss. First he discovered the largest rainforest in southern Africa at Mount Mabu in Zambezia Province, northern Mozambique. Since then, he’s been using Google Earth to explore inaccessible and remote regions of Mozambique and beyond. He first noticed Mount Lico on Google Earth back in 2012 but it took many years of planning and research to organise a fullscale scientific expedition to the site.
12
What immediately struck Bayliss when he first looked at Mount Lico on Google Earth in 2012 was a volcanic-like structure with a basin of dark green forest in the middle. The surrounding land was heavily disturbed and cultivated but the forest itself looked intact and unspoilt. Such a scenario could only be down to two factors (or a combination of both): that the forest held spiritual value and was, therefore,
In 2017 Bayliss finally visited Mount Lico through two reconnaissance visits – in February 2017 (the end of the wet season) and in early November 2017 (end of the dry season). He needed to find the correct route through hours of travelling via dirt road, fallen bridges and river crossings in order to get to the site but, importantly, he also wanted to see the forest on top at the two climatic extremes. To this end, he bought a drone and was delighted when it confirmed the forest was in good condition. Bayliss then organised a full-scale scientific expedition to properly investigate the site. Initially, this was planned for about 10 people but quickly grew to some 28 people including scientists from around the globe, logistical support skilled in planning expeditions, and a film crew. Most of the people had worked with Bayliss in some capacity over the last 30 years, and all of them were experienced in working in Africa. Included were also Mozambican scientists from three institutions in Mozambique.
The expedition was finally delivered in May 2018. A truly international team, in conjunction with the Mozambican authorities, assembled at the base on Mount Lico where a camp was made. Two of the UK’s best climbers, Jules Lines (a famous free climber) and Mike Robertson (a well-known stuntman), scaled Mount Lico without too much difficulty and set up the necessary ropes. A satellite camp was made in the basin and close to the crater edge and over the course of two weeks, the scientists moved up and down investigating fauna and flora found in this unique site. Results are still awaiting final analysis but already a new species of butterfly (caught by Bayliss) has been confirmed. Most importantly, for scientists to study a site with little or no human disturbance is an incredibly rare and unique opportunity! More results are expected... View more photos of the expedition at www.julianbayliss.co.uk/lico See more about the discovery of the largest rainforest in southern Africa by searching Mount Mabu on YouTube or at https://youtu.be/ZTMyDtHZXIc

left alone by the local communities; or that it might be actually very difficult to get up to it. If the latter, then the forest was very special as sites with little or no human disturbance are very rare on this planet!

Lights! Camera! Travel! Film tourism has the potential to increase the awareness and image of cities, regions and countries around the world.
H
ow does a film or television series impact the image of the location in which it’s set or shot? This is a question Hannes Engelbrecht, an academic completing his Master’s degree in the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the University of Pretoria, is answering in his work. “One of the fathers of ‘place branding’ is [independent policy advisor] Simon Anholt and he said that place branding is about making a place famous,” Engelbrecht says. “And if you think about it, we don’t know about Central Park or Fifth Avenue because we did extensive research on New York. We know them because we’ve seen them in multiple films.”
www.onroutemag.co.za
Indeed, one of the earliest mentions of boosting a destination’s image with film tourism comes from Nigel Morgan, Annette Pritchard and Roger Pride (authors of the book Destination Branding), who argue that one of the best forms of tourism product placement is to place your destination in a film. This worked well for New Zealand, which, according to a Forbes study in 2012, had a 50% increase in tourism numbers after The Lord of the Rings.
38
“Whether that’s all because of Hobbits, I wouldn’t venture to guess,” Engelbrecht says. “But it’s got to do with the integrated marketing methods. The movies spotlighted the country and the destination marketing organisation jumped on the opportunity. And then you have something that comes out like ‘Home of Middle Earth’, which is their current slogan. It’s not to say that everyone should go that extreme and make everything fictional into film tourism, but it’s a way of enhancing what you’ve already got in any country.” Another interesting example of a study done in this regard was by Chieko Iwashita, who sampled Japanese tourists and found that 70% of them indicated that film was a major motivator for their travel to the UK. They went on to identify films with destinationspecific content – think quintessentially British titles like Notting Hill
Things can get more complicated than the Marvel Cinematic Universe when film tourism is to a place where a film is set but not made, like the Twilight saga set in Washington State but filmed in Vancouver or Braveheart, which was filmed in Ireland despite being Scottish to its core. It’s the same in South Africa, even as government incentives and rebates fuel the local film industry’s growth. While movies like the Nigerian title Ten Days in Sun City have a clear link to location, Cape Town is often a stand-in for other places, from Pakistan (Homeland) and Ghana (The Crown) to those that don’t exist, at least not yet (Black Mirror). Similarly, not many people realise that Avengers: Age of Ultron filmed a big fight scene in Johannesburg because the city wasn’t ‘featured’ as itself.
...fictional film productions tell universal stories which are highly emotional and have a wide reach.
“What we have in South Africa is a complicated history and it always comes into play,” he admits. “But in many ways, we’ve done film tourism in South Africa for years; we’re just not linking it and spotlighting it and focusing on it. To a certain extent, I’m referring back to The Gods Must Be Crazy and to what it did for travel to the Kalahari and wanting to see that community. It’s positive and negative on how we depict people in film and so forth but, as always with tourism, we need to negate that negative effect on communities.” Another aspect to be aware of is the potentially negative image that tourists might associate with the country after gritty films like Tsotsi, District 9, and Chappie. “If there’s a negative image being portrayed, maybe don’t shine the light on that as a destination marketing tool,” Engelbrecht advises. “But you can make some products out of that, like the [dark tourism] Jack the Ripper tours in London, which are well attended. For example, you could do a Halloween tour inspired by Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, where the breakout of the zombie plague happens on the Cape Town cable car.”
Opportunities for guides and studios The Crown
Tours to locations or sets are an easy option, especially given how popular South Africa is becoming as a destination that has every
New cultural products The biggest opportunity right now is for products related to Black Panther, the first film to reach more than R100m at the South African box office and the reason Hotelscan. com and Hotels.com are both reporting spikes in searches for the fictional nation of Wakanda. “Black Panther is breaking records all over the show and for specific reasons,” Engelbrecht says. “The world is being shown cultural products they haven’t seen before – tradition, fashion and things linked to numerous countries – on a mass scale and in a positive light.” A challenge relates to copyright and trademark, which is why Engelbrecht suggests that discussions about the usage of specific terms be negotiated upfront. “Nigeria is claiming it with the Nollywood movie Wakanda Forever – I’m not sure if they’re going to get into trouble for that – so all the film tourists from Black Panther will go there first,” he says. “But we can also claim it, perhaps marketing the Eastern Cape as the home of the Wakanda language, advertising tours to the region in between movie trailers at the cinema, or having a competition to win a holiday that links the film to the place.” Other suggestions from Engelbrecht include talking to the studios about creating a documentary or extra content for DVDs about the area portrayed in the film but with more factual information. There’s also the chance to produce other experiences, like Johannesburg Ballet staging a Black Panther-inspired performance at the Cradle of Humankind, drawing attention to the attraction. The bottom line is simple: “If it’s your cultural product, own it.”

Fuelling the local film industry’s growth
“It’s great to see the shift from niche Afrikaans films to those with wider appeal, like Love is a Four Letter Word, but there’s a bit of disjointedness in how we do things,” Engelbrecht says. “Film doesn’t know about tourism and tourism doesn’t know about film; often it’s difficult for us to talk to each other. The advice is to go out and engage with your local film commissions and start developing film tourism products. If you see a film being shot, you need to know which film it is. Locate the spots where each scene was shot so you can start recreating those images. If somebody famous is in town, tweet about it. If there’s a set being built, ask them what’s going to happen afterwards. For example, the Shakaland Zulu Cultural Village in KwaZulu-Natal was bought [from the Shaka Zulu television series] and turned into a tourist attraction.”
Source: Acumen magazine
“[Film tourism expert] Stefan Roesch says that fictional film productions tell universal stories which are highly emotional and have a wide reach,” Engelbrecht says. “But destination marketing via film and television is not perceived as promotion or as an ad to come visit. It’s more credible and more ‘autonomous’ if your place is in a film. You can back it up with other ads and campaigns but it has to be linked to that destination. It can be just a stand-in location.”
landscape a production company could wish for and how fascinating many fans would find the process of making a movie or TV show. Other ideas include creating maps for specific films (like the Afrikaans comedy Pad Na Jou Hart), specific regions, or even to areas where celebrities like Trevor Noah or Charlize Theron grew up. All these are opportunities for guides and studios to earn extra income.
www.onroutemag.co.za
– that had a sense of culture and place. For Engelbrecht, this links back to the idea that film becomes a catalyst for showcasing who and what we are as people of the world.

HOW TO: FILM TOURISM IN PRACTICE
CONSIDER THE BROADER CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
The biggest opportunity right now is for products related to Black Panther...
In recent years, the economic importance of the creative industries has been recognised, with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development coining the term ‘the creative economy’. Broadly defined, this includes fine arts, music, publishing, games, festivals, design, architecture, television, and film. “The creative industry has been recognised in terms of its economic importance for innovation and trade, social inclusion, cultural diversity and environmental sustainability,” says Charlene Herselman, an academic in the University of Pretoria’s Department of Historical and Heritage Studies. “The importance refers to the interface between creativity, culture, economics and technology in the contemporary world.”
FIND THE LINKS For the creative industry to play a role in all these sectors, one must find the links as exemplified in the relationship between film and tourism. By showcasing and promoting other creative industries through increased awareness, film tourism also benefits itself in the process. “Film tourism has been one of the earliest and most prominent examples of these two working together,” Herselman says. “It’s a mutually beneficial relationship with creative industries and tourism each having decided benefits for the other. In terms of tourism, we have the development of tourism potential of destinations. And oftentimes it’s an intangible product. Tour guides take people to a location where filming happened but there’s nothing left so visitors take photos to say they were there and use their imagination to fill in the blanks.”
Black Panther
can later apply in tourism. It improves the image of countries and regions in the specific context of destination development.”
BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER Once a film project is approved, all the relevant organisations should connect with their counterparts in the tourism industry, which is how it works in the UK. “When Creative England and Creative Scotland have film productions coming through, they give a ‘heads-up’ to the tourism organisations to tell them about productions that align with the destination image and ask if they want buy-in,” Herselman explains. “They are sent the script, the tourism organisation decides if they want to be part of it, and then they work together with the creative industry and film industry to create products. The reason it works well is because they are mutually beneficial. The film can promote the destination and the destination can promote the film.”
www.onroutemag.co.za
40
“There are certain ways in which we can do things – there are ways that you can get beyond things like copyright and trademark laws – and develop products but we need to go higher up,” she says. “We need to lobby the other decision-makers.”
BE PATIENT Because the film industry also needs tourist facilities – accommodation, transport, guides – helping them find what they need is one way to get them to return the favour and allow the tourism industry to use their intellectual property for film tourism.
“The Department of Arts and Culture and South African Tourism are going to talk to those production companies and arrange with them that we keep the sets to have some form of tourism associated with it, COLLABORATE AND that we can have usage rights for images COMMUNICATE to say that a certain film was produced in Unfortunately, the film industry in South Africa South Africa, and that we can create the products we want to create for film tourism,” is often described as being unapproachable. Herselman says. “So things are happening. Herselman believes the problem is because those in tourism don’t necessarily understand They’re just happening slowly.”
SPREAD THE BENEFITS It’s not just that tourism reaps all the benefits. For the creative industries, these partnerships expand the audience for creative products, support innovation, revitalise the creative industry, open up export markets and it promotes professional networks and knowledge development. “All these benefits of the creative industry can enhance and diversify tourism: from adding new products to using creative technology to develop and enhance the tourism experience,” Herselman says. “A lot of the innovation comes from the creative industry that we
how the film industry works and vice versa. And even though it’s not a surprise to her (or anyone) that government departments don’t always work well together, there are still solutions.
Black Mirror
Atandwa Kani is following in the footsteps of his father John Kani. Atandwa features in the Marvel superhero franchise movie Black Panther playing the younger version of his father in the role of young King T’Chaka. Interestingly, Xhosa became the official language of Wakanda because of Atandwa’s actor father John Kani. He portrayed King T’Chaka in Civil War and kept his accent. Actor Chadwick Boseman, who plays King T’Challa in Black Panther picked it up, and the rest of the actors followed suit. Read the interview with Atandwa “The Prince” Kani himself – on page 52! - Ed

Top Tips for Choosing
Your Next Hotel Boutique hotels, business lodges, overnighting near the airport, family friendly or couples only, choosing the right hotel can be overwhelming, especially when lastminute promotions, deals for locals and loyalty programmes are at play.
There are, however, a few fail-safe suggestions to simplify the booking process.
Brand trust “If you have stayed in a hotel that really made a lasting impression, instead of sifting through hundreds of stand-alone properties, take a look at what else they have in their portfolio,” suggests Sharmila Ragunanan, Group Marketing Manager Dream Hotels & Resorts. “If it’s a strong brand, that positive ethos should filter through all of its hotels, resorts, lodges and guesthouses. Building up a loyal relationship by regularly staying at their properties will make it easier for the team to get better at pre-empting what you need, before you ask. “If you are a frequent traveller… you can typically earn rewards from their loyalty programme or through a membership as a value-add,” Ms. Ragunanan adds.
“A team member should attend to your queries politely and promptly but it is the detailed quality of their responses that should also be considered. Whether you’re looking for a great deal or some great kid-friendly room options, it’s important that they do what they can to accommodate your requests but are also upfront about telling you what facilities they might not have.”
Beware the hotel that targets everyone
www.onroutemag.co.za
Before you begin searching for a hotel, determine which services and facilities are important and which are ‘nice to have’. “If you’re looking for something for the family, don’t get distracted by the fast, free Wi-Fi or the private jacuzzi,” says Rosenberg. “The best way to gauge if you’re the right guest for a hotel, is to browse through its facilities but also its specials.”
“If you’re looking at a hotel that offers familyfriendly rooms but the facilities and their on-site restaurants are geared at business travellers, and they have more than a few honeymoon deals, you might experience more Ms. Ragunanan adds: “Every guest should feel than a few pain points during your trip.” well looked after, regardless of whether they are a V.I.P... Our ‘One Guest’ approach remains the same throughout our properties, where our team makes sure each guest feels like they matter the most.” Guest personalisation is a growing international trend and should be evident in a hotel’s service, regardless of how many nights you stay or which room category you book.

Know what you want
“You can usually get an idea about what your stay might be like by browsing through a hotel’s website and, most importantly, at that first point of contact, when you e-mail or call to ask questions,” says Jeff Rosenberg, Head Chairperson of Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa, Fedhasa. Peninsula Hotel
Do you notice a pattern of issues and complaints? It may be Wi-Fi connectivity, cleanliness or gripes about reception. Whatever the case may be, decide if any of these issues would be a problem for you. Another thing to look for here is the quality of the response to the complaints from the hotel. Polite and proactive responses offer insight into the level of professionalism. Every traveller has different needs and whether you’re looking for a great deal or a great location, it’s important that the property you choose goes above and beyond, says Ms. Ragunanan. “If they’re offering you value-adds without asking and sending you options that are better than you had in mind, chances are you’ve found a great hotel.”

Glowing with pride she says, “I open the door of our caravan and that smell triggers my best childhood memories, camping with my grandad. I have a picture of my parents bathing me in a bucket,” and that’s just what they used to do with their youngest daughter India-Rose. And, of all the things her eldest daughter
Georgia wanted for her 13th birthday – a disco, a pamper party… Candy gave her the options – a weekend caravanning with family friends was her first choice. “That says a lot!” How did this Sandton girl end up owning a caravan? “Friends took us camping at Sterkfontein Dam and our tent blew away. We slept in their caravan – and we were blown away! Caravanning takes you places you’d never ordinarily go – or dream of going – because there’s just nowhere else to stay.”

Choosing your ‘van’
“What’s most important is your van mustn’t swing and pull while being towed. It took us years to find our Scout Sprite, which they sadly don’t make anymore. “It comfortably sleeps four yet is tiny and fits in a single garage. The roof pops up and the side opens into a double bed so it has two double beds. This is ideal for weekends, but for a three-week trip we add on a room – a tent – for our girls, another on the front as a patio/dining room, and gazebo as a veranda. “Over time, our friend Paul’s caravan has cost him more than half a million rand – it’s fully imported, with air-conditioning, a stove, full-size fridge and freezer, queen bed, TV, bathroom, shower, toilet, basin... Ours is very basic but I’ve enjoyed making it our home from home.”

Home away from home!
Consider the humble caravan – a place where you’re the only one who’s used the duvet and you can check-in and -out whenever it suits you!
FIVE-STAR HOTEL FIVE BILLIONSTAR HOTEL
A place by the sea
Every December for the last seven years, the Copes have had a standing three-week booking on the same site at Yellow Sands, 10 kilometres from Cintsa. “You’re literally on the beach, protected by trees but you can hear the waves, and we string up hammocks. It’s very grounding! It’s serviced daily and we take minimal clothing. We connect with the same friends, some from Joburg, Cape Town and others from Gonubie – only 10k’s down the road! “We cook a full Christmas meal and our tables conveniently interlock into one long table. Father Christmas pitches up, there’s a religious service and youth camp activities. We have themed evenings with bonfires, treasure hunts, a golf day nearby, a cycle race, and movie nights under the stars – It’s brilliant!
“There’s no Wi-Fi, no TV, it’s back to nature, and to find the kids you look for the pile of bikes! “Most sites we’ve been to have electricity, but ‘Sterkies’ has no power or water. We’ll never forget staying at the foot of the Golden Gate in the snow – our humble caravan was incredibly cosy! Jumping off the cliffs into Sterkfontein Dam is also a highlight!
Afternoon nap time
“Indy sometimes says, ‘Mom, I’ve never been on an aeroplane’… She’ll have to wait for that but agrees that all the adventures we’ve had in our caravan go a long way to make up for it!” Readers looking to buy a caravan can expect to spend from about R300 000 (entry level) to R370 000 for a top-end van. Certain companies specialise in caravan finance, to make investing in your caravan easier.
“For a family of four, you’re looking at R250 per site, R200 per adult, R50 per child per day. So, R750 per day x 21 days… R15 750. By comparison, you’d stare down well over R100 000 for two weeks in a 5-star hotel nearby. And hiring a caravan adds up so you might as well buy your own.”

People who caravan tend to be very downto-earth so upgrading what you have is more of a hobby than materially competitive. “Candy adds, “We nose around to see what others have done and the old vans are often done up and quite beautiful. Our interior décor theme’s blue and white, with bunting and, for Christmas, fairy lights – well, that is competitive – Yellow Sands can be seen from outer space!”

WATER AND BETTER HEALTH

I
n August 2017, a group of volunteers from the Wishing Well International Foundation (WWIF), WWIF South Africa and H2O International pulled together for a ten-day road trip across southern Africa deploying water filtration technology (or wells) in developing areas battling the clean water crisis. What this trip also achieved was to provide donors and sponsors with the opportunity to be hands-on in deploying filtration technology and see first-hand the impact of their donations.
route took the team through rural South Africa and Swaziland to areas like Usuthu Gorge, Lavumisa, Oshoek, Hazyview, Thonga Village and Komatipoort. The focus was on providing and installing wells at crèches and schools where the majority of the local community would congregate at mealtimes, and alongside the filtration solution, volunteers had the opportunity to discuss hygiene and sanitation with young minds who would one day pass this knowledge on to their own families.
This was the second annual journey, dubbed the 10-1-10 Africa Expedition, and the
Along the route the expedition team saw around 200 water filters deployed in new
communities, directly impacting the lives of 2 000 people. They also visited the sites of previous deployments in order to check water quality and equipment. Wishing Well purifiers use low-technology biofoam bucket systems that are a simple yet effective method for reducing bacteria and viruses in water. Flocculant is added at first to bind unwanted contaminants together that eventually settle at the bottom of the bucket and the system then uses gravity rather than pressure or electricity to pass water through the filtration media, which removes the remainder of impurities.
A working wishing well in action at Diyane Primary School in Ekuhlehleni Village.
The team is hoping to raise enough money by 2019 to purchase 3 000 to 4 000 water filtration units to directly impact 30 000 to 40 000 lives. WWIF SA’s Ken Lister and WWIF SA President, Tony Marchesini, attended the 2017 expedition, along with Guillermo Guzman, Founder and CEO of WWIF, having already participated in WWIF projects in destinations such as Ghana, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. They demonstrate the organisation’s hands-on approach and belief that “it’s crucial to lead by example”. He calls on the rest of the water treatment industry to join them in their mission to contribute towards a worthy cause. Instead of having to travel outrageous distances daily to collect water from streams and rivers, families can drink and cook with filtered water from a source closer to home, thanks to the Wishing Well International Foundation. Not only is the water safer to consume, it also enables families to spend more time together, time that would otherwise be spent looking for cleaner water or in clinics due to poor health. For more visit www.wishingwellint.co.za and make a donation via the website or backabuddy.co.za.
For every R150 donated, one person’s life is changed for the better for the next ten years.

Kids seen collecting water from a muddy river as the Wishing Well International Foundation travels through Mbandleni village. This picture was taken on the first trailer run to identify areas in need. This was while the drought in KwaZulu-Natal was in full force; there had not been rain for months and this pool of water accumulated over a period of one week from a nearby well. Next to this pool of water was a cow carcass, yet it was the only nearby water source and their grandmother was at home sick in bed. She asked them to collect some water as she was thirsty. This kind of water is often consumed without boiling or filtering.
• It’s an affordable and easy-to-use filtration system requiring minimal maintenance, proven to be one of the most sustainable filtration methods for rural areas. • What makes the system more sustainable than others is the buy-in of locals and the work of local committees trained to check and maintain the systems. Whereas many non-profit organisations divert their funds to research or other areas that
don’t directly benefit communities, WWIF has remained focused on turning donations into drinking water and thereby drastically improving the quality of life for the locals who live in those communities. While there’s still a large gap to cover and 200 wells might not sound like much, the logistics of the 10-1-10 Africa Expedition covers vast distances across rural Africa and makes an enormous impact. Just one well can provide clean, safe drinking water for ten people for up to ten years, and each well costs about R1 500.
Ken Lister and Emile Berries demonstrate the effects of the flocculent used in the first part of the filtration process.

Q&A WITH...
ATANDWA “THE PRINCE” KANI
A
tandwa Kani features in the Marvel superhero franchise movie Black Panther playing the younger version of his father and famous South African actor John Kani, in the role of young King T’Chaka.
Atandwa was born in Port Elizabeth and, inspired by his dad, graduated from Wits University in 2008 with an Honours degree in theatrical performance. Since then he’s played numerous local and international roles on stage, TV and film to much acclaim. We caught up with Atandwa in New York, where he lives with his wife Fikile. He says that they’re eager to have “a few kids, and Fiks wants a pug or four”...
Q: If not an actor, what would you be? Q: You’ve worked extensively on stage, in TV and movies in SA, the UK and USA. Which form of acting is the most challenging? Theatre, because after gruelling rehearsals, you’re on every night, live, with no “Cut! Take 2!”
Q: Do you memorise lines easily and how do you go about getting into character? I do memorise lines fairly easily, it runs in the family, clearly. I dedicate a portion of my day to being in the world of the character, physically and mentally.
Q: Is there a particular character you dream of playing one day? I would love to write a film about Dr. John Kani’s life and play him in it... perhaps have him direct it.
Q: What were the highlights of being in Black Panther? I LOVED putting on that Black Panther suit, being The King of Wakanda and winning a fight against Sterling K. Brown. Also, being able to spend time with my dad on set and seeing him getting the adoration and respect he deserves. Keeping in touch quite regularly with all the cast members is pretty cool too!
John Kani and Atandwa Kani at the LA world premiere of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther.
Q:. Not to take anything away from Chadwick Boseman’s performance as T’Challa/Black Panther, if you were cast would you have done anything differently? Of course! I am an African. I would have spoken more Xhosa.
Q: Shot from an outsider’s impression of Africa, albeit it with a large element of fantasy, did anything about the film not sit well with you? I was the cultural consultant in the film, so anything that did feel off, Ryan Coogler was gracious enough to listen to me and amend.
Q: What’s the most embarrassing thing to happen to you in a stage production? In the stage play, The Tempest, at The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) [in the UK], I noted one night we had teleprompters for the deaf and hard of hearing. As soon as I saw the words being displayed as I said them, I thought “oh that’s so cool”, then forgot the rest of my monologue as Ariel.

Q: What’s the most challenging thing about following in your father’s footsteps?

Trying to figure out how he has done – and continues to do – all he has done! He is an unstoppable force!
Q: Any advice for aspiring actors?

I have NO clue, but I know I’d be brilliant at it.
Q: Do you have any hidden talents? I can actually sing quite well... So I enjoy singing!
Q: What’s the best part about living in the USA and what do you miss most about SA? The best part: being with my wife. I miss my friends and family the most.
Q: What’s your dream travel destination? I would like to go to Greece one day! It looks peaceful and beautiful with their clear ocean waters and beaches. I just want to eat olives on a Greek beach.
Q: Have you had any bizarre or scary things happen to you while travelling? My wife and I went to St. Lucia, KZN, and once, at night, there were hippopotamuses roaming the streets. That was both bizarre and scary!
Q: What do you never travel without? Deodorant...

YOUR PHONE IS 10 TIMES DIRTIER THAN A TOILET SEAT!
www.onroutemag.co.za
A recent survey showed that more than 17 000 copies of different bacteria are present on the phones of the average student, which is 10 times more than the average toilet seat! Prevent harmful germs from getting onto your phone by avoiding using your phone when going to the bathroom. When toilets flush, germs spread everywhere and if you were on your phone, those germs are now leaving the bathroom with you!
54
According to professors of public health, using your phone in the bathroom is like going to the toilet and then leaving without washing your hands. Studies have found serious pathogens on cellphones, including Streptococcus, MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a “super bug”) and even E.coli. When you’re sick, you also use
your phone and the germs and bacteria remain on your phone after you’re better... Gammatek’s Whoosh! has been proven to remove 99% of germs from your phone, without compromising any part of your device. It’s available in three sizes: Compact (8ml) which delivers about 100 sprays for R149, Go (30ml) which delivers about 250 sprays for R199, and Duo (100ml and 8ml) delivering a combined 900 sprays for R399. Whoosh! packs include an antimicrobial microfibre cloth. The Duo pack comes with two cloths. Whoosh is available at Incredible Connection and selected Vodacom stores, as well as online at Takealot.com

HEALTH & SAFETY QUICK PACKING HACKS… • Personalise your bag with a bold sticker or ribbon, especially if it’s a common type of bag or a black one. • When packing, keep the most useful stuff on the top. Keep your valuables in your carry-on luggage, and ensure your jewellery, wallet and other small valuable items are in inside compartments, so they’re harder to steal. Keep prescription medication on you in case your luggage gets lost, and if you have space, pack a change of clothes and underwear. • Want to pack lighter? Take samples or mini sizes of toiletries, lint rollers and fabric refreshers for clothing that can
be re-worn, and neutral clothes that can be mixed and matched. • On a long drive or flight, take at least one battery pack for your phone or iPad. Solar charging devices are also fantastic if you don’t have access to electricity. • To minimise the hassle at airport security, have all your electronics that you’ll need to take out your bag close by, or at the top of your case. • To maximise space in any of your bags, roll your clothes up – don’t fold them. • If you have a lot of cables and electrical devices, a bag with various compartments is your best option. Another idea is to separate them and store them in various Ziploc bags. For luggage perfectly geared to easy packing, shop Thule’s new online site at www.thulestore.co.za
