his special Acton edition is our ninth and last magazine in a bumper 2015 year. In 2016 we go down to just one magazine, coming out at Christmas. In January, however, we’ll be launching ‘The Ealinger’, a new online-only scrapbook (see ad on page 2), so business-owners still have somewhere to advertise to the local audience, and still can access the Contactus network. Ads in The Ealinger will cost £20 for a 140-character text-only message, and as the scrapbook will be coming out weekly, it allows for date-sensitive adverts like events or recruitment. Hello Acton’s praises For years all I knew about Acton was the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox church on Newton Avenue where I got married and my sons were christened. (Photo above shows the church choir opening this year’s Ealing Council session at the Ealing Town Hall.) Working on this Contactus special edition has given me good reason to spend many an #ActonDayOut finding out what else happens in Ealing W3. Now with Ealing Council’s plans to stage an Acton in Business expo (see p7), and coworking hubs springing up across the town (p11), there is plenty of attention on business in Acton. So, happy clicking through, and do use the live links (where you see ) to connect with your favourite biz. Thanks for ‘shopping by’. W3 welcome The sense of anticipation you get when you enter Acton seems to be down to the combination of efforts to make something new happen. New people are moving in with original ideas, innovative businesses, and offbeat ways of doing things. While it’s the Acton High Street that will probably need the most regeneration work; areas a bit away from the town centre, like Churchfield Road, Park Royal, and the Royale Leisure Centre, are quietly powering away, boosting the kudos of the town.

Aeronaut award For the second year running, The Aeronaut on Acton High Street has won the Time Out London award for Best Pub in Acton. Manager Dene Stevenson is establishing a fresh reputation for the pub (the rather more rowdy Redback Tavern was previously located here), with circus and cabaret nights, a kids film club, sponsoring the local police football team – and, on the day Contactus visited, freshly brewed beer from master brewer Manmohan Birdi.

Churchfield Road

SHOPS VOX POP

Say the word “shopping” to anyone in Acton and the next two words you’re likely to hear are “Churchfield Road”. For non-Actoners, Churchfield Road runs parallel to the north of the high street, between Horn Lane and Acton Central station, and is a sweet mix of award-winning and stylish shops, from juice bars and cafes (see below) to beauty salons, butchers and bakers. There are about 80 shops on the road, many of them independent, and owner-run.

“What do you think about the shops in Acton?” Joanne Brianti: “Acton is a very eclectic place – very mixed culturally and socially. Ethnically it’s also very diverse: you can taste all kinds of foods here. For example on Churchfield Road you have a choice of Lebanese, Moroccan, Japanese and Indian cuisine. Then of course there’s always your English caf.” Holli “There are lots of chic shops on Churchfield Road – it’s like a little bit of Chiswick in Acton.”

Delicious blends It’s not possible to walk past The Blend House cafe, smoothie and juice bar (#114) without stopping in for a bit. Owner Maria Conway says: “In winter you can come in for soup too.”

Field’s a winner Toufik Bennebri at Field’s (#132) celebrates his Time Out London award for Best Cafe in Acton. He works alongside wife Mary, serving home-made food seven days a week. “Business has been picking up,” smiles Toufik.

Maddy Alemayehu “I like Churchfield Road. Acton can give the impression that it’s young and diverse but there are many older people who live in the area and just don’t come out of their homes.” (See p10) Isabelle Morley-Fletcher “I don’t shop on the high street, but I’ll often visit Churchfield Road – there’s a very nice shop called The Vintage Home Store, where you can get gifts you don’t find anywhere else.” (See p11) Larisa Smondulak “Somewhere that’s nice to go for a chat is Field’s. Presentz on the high street is another lovely familyrun business – as a mum of four I always need them!”

F

ollowing the successful staging of the first Ealing in Business expo on 19 November, the Ealing Council Economic Regeneration department has again commissioned Carlene Bender of Contactus magazines, this time to organise an expo focused just on the businesses in the Acton part of the borough. “What we want to do is reach out to as many businesses in Acton as we can, and the expo model provides creative ways of doing that,” says Andrea Laffey, the Regen project manager for

Acton. “Acton is an area the Council is working hard to improve, thanks to funding from the Mayor of London.” While the details of location, date and lineup for an Acton in Business expo are being finalised, anyone keen to find out more can follow @ActonBizExpo on Twitter, or register their interest by completing a short fivequestion survey at tinyurl.com/ ActonExpoSurvey, remembering to leave a contact email address at the end of the survey. www.ealing.gov.uk @EalingCouncil @ActonBizExpo

EALING BIZ EXPO Thanks to a creative and thorough team of organisers – Carlene Bender of Contactus, Glenda Shawley of The Training Pack, and Shelley Henderson of Ealing Mums in Business – the first Ealing in Business expo attracted hundreds of visitors to a busy and non-stop buzzing Ealing Town Hall on Thursday 19 November. Feedback has been all-round positive, as in the words of exhibitor Jacqueline Davis of Inspiring Minds: “What a fabulous and inspiring day”. See photos above and on pages 8-9. If you are interested in finding out about more events like these in Ealing borough in 2016, please send an email to acton@contactusealing.co.uk to be added to the mailing list.

Acton ready for coworking

Contact Rached Slimani Isabelle checks out a pod

Two new coworking hubs have recently found homes in Acton: Co Work Hub in North Acton, and The Collective’s The Doughnut Factory, Warple Way. Contactus went for a tour of the latter, accompanied by Acton-based Integrated Design & Build company, Isabelle Scott. Design partner Isabelle Morley-Fletcher took the time to explain the growing attraction of moving into Acton to live and

work: “Couples are selling flats in Holland Park and buying houses in Poets Corner and surrounding areas – Ealing is too far out, and you get more space for your money here than in Chiswick”. Scott Ingham, the construction consultant, is impressed by the “good housing stock” in Acton – “big, solid family houses that have never had anything done to them.” “We made a decision to get to know this area in huge detail,” he added. “We know everything about our business inside out.” www.isabellescott.co.uk www.thedoughnutfactory.co.uk

Jo was happy to hear about Ealing Athena members visiting The Doughnut Factory coworking hub off Acton Vale (see story above). “The opening of coworking hubs in Acton could be of great benefit for many of our members, more than half of whom work from home – offering opportunities to share ideas, to separate home and work responsibilities and activities, and providing a good base for meetings,” she said. theathenanetwork.co.uk/JoanneSumner @AthenaWLondon The-Athena-Network-West-London

A radical approach to change

cton residents Julian Smith and Will Crosthwait were frustrated by the high-rise buildings going up around Acton and had no more faith in the ability of politicians to change things. So they decided to do something positive about it – they launched an organisation called Community Tech UK, with the aim of “uniting and representing communities through technology”. “The way to change things is to stand together across the borough: residents’ associations, community groups, traders’ associations, faith organisations, all those who care,” says Julian. “Together we have a much louder voice.” “Together we can put forward candidates to stand for election as true ‘community councillors’ – people drawn from
