Where to do business networking in Chiswick
It’s warm and sunny in Chiswick and what better way to celebrate than with a bit of al-fresco dining to watch the world go by? This sketch of tree-shaded restaurant patios along Chiswick High Road sums up the colours and vibrations of a West London summer. Enjoy it! Illustration by Carlene Bender

#Tweetthestreets last December
Boosting local biz Welcome to Contactus magazines’ special edition spotlighting Chiswick’s fantastic restaurants and eateries. As it happens (we didn’t plan it!) this edition is out in time for the EatChiswick W4 foodie festival (see page 4), organised by the same people behind ShopChiswick and last December’s #Tweetthestreets bicycle ride round Chiswick’s shops (see me on a Brompton bike in the pic above). So we’re thrilled once again to have the opportunity for this kind of interaction with local businesses. That’s what Contactus is for – helping shoppers find and get in touch with the kind of businesses they would like to support. And not just shops, but the home-based/online, service-oriented businesses too. Happy shopping! Carlene Bender Editor-publisher, Contactus magazines www.contactusmagazines.co.uk carlene@contactusmagazines.co.uk Twitter: @ContactusMagsW4 Tel: 079 6039 2677 Find me on Facebook and LinkedIn If you would like to advertise in the next Contactus local business magazine, ‘Contactus Ealing’ is due out online on 24 July 2015. Advertising booking deadline: 10 July. Ads start from £20.

GUEST COLUMN Communications specialist Cristina Benson has been living in and dining out in Chiswick for the past 14 years, so writing about it comes naturally for her. Here’s her overview of the local foodie culture
Every kind of food
“My favourites are the independent restaurants”
Last weekend, we visited The Smokehouse (formerly Hole in the Wall) and had a fabulous meal in the sunny garden. Their quirky versions of traditional favourites, such as smoked lamb shoulder and smoked bone marrow, are treats for the taste buds. And when you go, try the smoked strawberries for dessert as they’re surprisingly delicious! cbensoncommunications.com @CB_Comms
“
Duke of Sussex
Looks are a bit deceiving at The Duke of Sussex. This traditional pub serves rustic, Spanish food including pinchos morunos, paella and decadent dulce de leche. Definitely worth a trip slightly off the Chiswick High Road. @thedukew4 Roebuck We love The Roebuck for family meals or date nights. We keep returning for the friendly staff, tasty food and lovely garden. The Roebuck’s menu has something for everyone including grilled asparagus, sea bream, sticky toffee pudding and gluten-free options. @The_roebuck Sam’s Brasserie
Sam’s Brasserie
If you haven’t tried steak night at Sam’s Brasserie, book a table today. Or if you’re a brunch person, go for the buttermilk pancakes or scrambled eggs with chorizo. I particularly enjoy Sam’s bar as it reminds me of New York. @SamsBrasserie
“
I
can’t think of a better place to live and eat out than Chiswick. That means a lot coming from an American transplanted from Chicago via New York. Our local foodie culture features some of the best restaurants, both in quality and range of cuisines. We’ve got the Michelin-starred Hedone and La Trompette, through to fish and chip shops and cafes. Whether you’re looking for someplace to have a sophisticated dinner date or a quick lunch with the kids, there’s no need to go into central London. My favourites are the independent restaurants.

It’s so hard to pick a favourite place! Tamp café has great coffee and is perfect for a bit of people-watching. Beehive café does lovely fresh salads and Vinoteca has a wonderful wine list. I’m looking forward to trying The Italian Job soon – the new craft beer pub. Devonshire Road has everything! Laura Drewell, business development manager at Care Concern – see ad on page 4) There’s a little Japanese restaurant on Turnham Green Terrace, Makoto – they have a wonderful range of dishes, not just sushi, and lots of Japanese style. It’s very small but a lot of Chiswick people go there at lunchtime. Isia Tlusty-Sheen, jeweller, Chiswick Gems
Recently we ordered dinner from an Italian place on Devonshire Road – Canta Napoli. We couldn’t go out because my father-in-law was ill, but they made the food really quickly, and the portion sizes were brilliant. Once it was on the plate it all looked fantastic. Online refresh Tips from Brentford-based marketing pro Q: How did websites become the number one marketing tool? Changes in Mark Wardell, consumer MW marketing behaviour based on the availability and advancement of technology. We are now able to access the world wide web from a whole range of devices and the first thing the consumer does is check you out online. Contactus
Q&A
MW marketing build websites for small to medium size businesses. Our websites are built with Wordpress, the most flexible, powerful and smartest way to publish your content online.
Q: Why does a website go stale? Two main reasons. Firstly, as technology moves on so does the demand on your website. For example your website needs to display correctly on mobile devices as well as desktops and laptops because more and more people are surfing the world wide web on their mobile. Secondly, your content goes out of date. Search engines and users want a reason to come back to your website so new and fresh content are vital. www.mwmarketing.co.uk @MWmarketing MWmarketing

Q: How do your patients find you? Through personal referral, and referrals from GPs Gordana Petrovic, or medical specialists – gynaecologists, acupuncturist obstetricians, midwives – as I specialise in fertility and pregnancy. Patients share their happy stories, and the word spreads quickly. Contactus
Q: Is acupuncture becoming more mainstream? Acupuncture is and should be viewed as a complementary medicine. As a 4000-year-old independent medicine model, it is extremely effective in resolving many health issues. Also I do think that in our western world, acupuncture should be combined with mainstream medicine. Q: Tell us a happy story from a recent treatment It has been a year of happy stories so far – five of my patients are now pregnant. ontactus is proud of West London-based stained glass artist Zoe Angle who worked on the recently unveiled Winston Churchill memorial window at the St Martins Church in Oxfordshire. Zoe’s specialty work of handpainted glass can be seen in the motifs set into the glass borders of the two-metre high window, which took two months to complete. “This window is my most prestigious project since working at Goddard and Gibbs Studios restoring glass from the Baltic Exchange Dome after the IRA bombing,” Zoe says. That glass is now displayed at the National Maritime Museum. Angle Glass will next be working on restoring the glass in a hundred-windowed Norman Shaw house. In the meantime, however, she is welcoming visitors to her Open Studio on 5-6 June (see ad). www.angleglass.co.uk angleglass.co.uk

isitors to the Contactus small business meetup on 18 May were lucky to have access to the expertise of W5 Physio physiotherapist Stewart Ramsay, who presented a talk entitled “Small Business Posture – and how to avoid it”. Stewart showed why it is important for small business owners to stretch and strengthen, to avoid injuries from sitting poorly while working. It can be worse for home-based microbiz who may not be able to afford the kind of office chair (budget £300) that could alleviate many problems. However, all is not lost. “Most of the problems you can cause with bad posture,” explained Stewart, “can be balanced just by moving around.” “Get up from your computer after no more than 45 minutes to avoid injury and keep concentration levels at their peak,” he added. www.w5physio.co.uk @W5Physio W5Physio
