So that’s what this guide is for – to remind you to *book early*. And, if you’re a restaurant owner, there’s a little bit of insight into what makes the Christmas office lunch an occasion to remember fondly. Chances are everyone will take note of these suggestions in 2015, and everywhere will be booked up by October instead.

Hello
Pitshanger Light up the Lane
Happy Christmassing Local businesses apparently have our busiest time at Christmas, sometimes compensating in December for any losses during the rest of the year. It’s a busy time for restaurants and eateries, whether because of the semi-formal affair that is the office Christmas lunch, or just because of people eating out while shopping. Check out our ‘Where to Book Your Office Christmas Lunch’ section (p4-7). And ‘Ealing Homebiz’ starts from page 16. Remember if you’re reading this magazine online, to clickthrough on the live links (look for the symbols ) and connect on Facebook and Twitter. VOX POP So what would you want from your office Christmas meal?
“
We asked this question in our Businesses in Ealing Facebook group: whether or not you had staff – what sort of place would you book for the office Christmas lunch? Here’s what local business-owners are thinking...
CB If I had staff, I’d want to treat them to eat somewhere special and different, probably not somewhere we’d usually go for lunch. I wouldn’t mind an offbeat menu either. Glenda Shawley Good food, good wine, good service and a great atmosphere preferably at a reasonable price i.e. not one hiked up to a ridiculous level because it’s Christmas. Chris McIntosh I think Glenda has hit the nail on the head. I’m also partial to Christmas pudding, so I’d like that to be on the menu. CB And, would it be wrong to have food other than Christmas fare on the menu? What I mean is, if you chose a Nepalese restaurant for the office lunch, would you demand they cook Continued on page 6

Chris McIntosh LOL – nope, I’m not fussy when it comes to food (except Brussels sprouts, which I can’t bear!) Maureen Bailey First impression, if this gets me inside the door. Then the food is very important; portions i.e too much or not enough, taste, presentation and price and service. The menu should contain a good variety of dishes. To sum up in three words: food, value and service. Zahra Shah Accommodating, friendly, nice range of food. Crackers.

Yuri Bender Our office Christmas lunch is generally held in a restaurant, because these people are going in the pub all the time – that’s why it’s better to go somewhere different. It’s the only time really that the staff go out together for a meal. The office Christmas parties are not really conducive to long, relaxed conversations. I look forward to the Christmas lunch, and if I worked in Ealing I’d vote for Hotel Xanadu or Atlantis on Pitshanger.

M
ost small businesses with 10 or more employees should run a server, most commonly for central file handling but also to perform printing, mail serving and system backups. Servers will also hold databases, groupware (like calendars and CRM – customer relationship management software), websites and intranets. Plus of course holding large files (images and videos). The server you choose should take into account the number and type of applications you run, and the number of users you have. You will also need to select an operating system (Windows, Linux or Mac). Don’t assume if you have PCs that you have to use Windows; both Linux and Mac servers can handle Windows and tend to be cheaper. Also, make sure you plan for expansion. Then of course you will have to consider the hardware. What type of server will you require to handle everything you have planned.

Horsenden Hill: it’s still rather wild up there Horsenden Hill in Perivale recently won ‘gold’ in the London in Bloom awards for best meadow in the large city category. At 100ha, it is the largest single nature conservation site in the borough, with much of its wildness still very much intact. It also holds the highest spot in Ealing, 85m above sea level, marked by a flat-topped obelisk, which was in fact topped by a straggly plant in a misshapen vase when we got there, and was the inspiration for the cover illustration for this first ‘Ealing all areas’ edition of ‘Contactus Ealing’. Advice for going walking up Horsenden Hill: go with a friend, and keep track with a map.

Where beauty is more than cosmetic
I
ask Dr Giorgia Ratta if she feels under pressure to look beautiful all the time. She smiles gently: “That’s why the clinic opens at 11.” But seriously, she’s not spending all morning in front of the mirror, she has to walk the dog and make the commute from Shoreditch into South Ealing. (Although that commute won’t be for much longer, if Ealing’s attractions continue to work their charms.) The Dr Giorgia Ratta Cosmetic Clinic opened in September on South Ealing Road, where opticians, J Wexler, operated for 35 years. “It’s good that people associate the location with a medical business,” she says,
as many of the skin and teeth treatments she offers can only be performed by a medical professional. Dr G, who moved to England from Italy five years ago, is a dentist, albeit one who has always been interested in aesthetics and beauty. “I am friendly and approachable, and yes I’m a doctor, but that means I can use products and treatments that ordinary salons can’t use,” she says. Dr G is good at putting clients at ease – and sometimes feeling less under pressure is halfway to becoming more beautiful. drgiorgiaratta.com @drGiorgiaRatta Dr-Giorgia-Ratta-DDSand-Aesthetics

Northfields expands into ‘hotspot’ Acton
E
state agent Northfields has just launched a new office in Acton, adding to its five existing offices across west London. The new branch at 125 High Street, Acton opened on Monday 27 October, offering a sales and letting service, as well as property management and mortgage advice. Sales manager, Joshua Baines-Buffery, explains: “Landlords, sellers and buyers we have worked with in our neighbouring offices in Ealing and Shepherds Bush have been asking us if we can help them move into the Acton property market. “They have seen that Acton is becoming a property ‘hotspot’.”
The news that Crossrail will stop at Acton Main Line station when the service starts in 2018, as well as redevelopment in the area and local schools with good Ofsted reports means that house prices increased by 23.8 per cent in W3 last year, according to the Land Registry. “Acton represents great value for money when compared with the areas it borders,” Joshua says. “More families are moving here, and as a family company ourselves, Northfields opening in Acton is a great fit.” Northfields chief executive, Richard Palfreeman, opened his first office in Northfield Avenue, Ealing, in 1988 and is excited by the expansion. “With offices

Make plans for your biz
I
f you’re getting ready to start your first business, you’ll probably start with a business plan, outlining how you’re going to make your business idea work. As your business expands and grows (whether according to plan or not), there will be parts of your original business plan that take on a ‘plan’ status of their own, such as: • marketing • social media • real people, and • growth. Why bother to plan? Because – as Glenda Shawley of the Training Pack, Ealing’s start-up expert, puts it: ‘Growing a business is tricky; a plan helps you to focus on doing the right things.’
Social media William John of Touch24 Digital has a special offer: “20 per cent off all social media management and strategy services before Christmas.” “Increase your sales online with great festive content, offers and targeting strategy,” he says. www.touch24digital.com @Touch24digital Touch24digital www.contactusmagazines.co.uk

Let’s meet up
E
very Monday, when I’m putting together the Ealing Business Diary, I’m surprised at how many new networking events keep getting added, from one-offs to pay-asyou-go, to online-only. Ealing business-owners love to get together to talk about the challenges they’re facing, and get advice from others going through many of the same experiences. Increasingly, we’re reaching out to networking outside the borough, like in Chiswick or even central London, to meet new people and expand the networking web. Where will we meet up this month? aving discovered her love for natural and herbal therapies and their application in health and beauty while in her native Lithuania, Egidija Bailie (better known as EE) found the opportunity to build a business around this interest when she moved to the UK. After taking several diplomas to boost her scientific and theoretical knowledge, she started up EE’s Cosmetics nine years ago, to hand-make “honest to goodness genuine products using only natural ingredients.” “There is nothing in these products to cause any damage to your skin,” she says of her creams and soaps, masks and scrubs. “They are all 100 per cent natural.” EE is a regular at local markets and events, but her products can also be purchased via her website. www.ees-cosmetics.co.uk Egidija: making cosmetics using the very @EEsCosmetics best natural ingredients EEs Cosmetics

here’s a line in Athanasia’s advert that really stands out. It’s the quote from American motivational author, Louise Hay: “Love Yourself, Heal Your Life”. Athanasia (no surname required) explains: “In 2001, I started doing holistic courses, reiki, then massage, and that’s around the time when I discovered Louise’s writings.” Athanasia: “What those words mean is psychic skills that if you are living with negative feelings like guilt, resentment and fear, you can’t go forward and heal your life,” she explains. Born in Athens but living in Ealing for the past 16 years, Athanasia always felt she had a “calling”, and began studying to develop her psychic skills. If you are interested in meeting Athanasia, and experiencing her Chryseis healing, call to arrange an appointment for a reading, or visit her stall at the Ealing Town Hall Psychic Fair on Thursday 27 November, 6pm-10.30pm. info@athanasia.org

gnes Gaudron has brought her French beauty and sports massage skills to West Ealing, and now customers can be treated at her Agnes Zen London salon located in the Bridge to Health clinic on Broomfield Road W13. From lash tinting to waxing, facials and body exfoliations, plus sports massage and full pregnancy pampering, Agnes’ range of treatments lives up to her goal of “Helping your body, mind and spirit achieve a natural harmony...” Agnes is intrigued by the health Agnes: helping people feel better benefits of the beauty industry: “I am a beauty therapist because I want to help people feel better,” she explains. “It helps someone to fight an illness if they feel better about how they look.” Which is why she was drawn to the clinic environment at Bridge to Health; and it is why her long-term plans include working in hospitals and prisons. www.agneszen-london.com @Agneszenlondon agneszen.london

Clients tell Zahra how happy they are
T
he testimonials on Zahra Shah’s Get Fit With Zahra website range from “I feel good” and “she’s so inspirational” to mentions of “muscle groups” and “cardio training”. Each person’s experience seems to be different, which makes sense, as Zahra aims to work with each client
according to his or her specific needs and targets. Here’s what Kelly for example had to say about a particular session designed to maintain fitness: “The sprint shuttle runs were fab – I am a runner and really enjoyed those”. And ‘PrincessFish29’ refers to Zahra’s eight-stone loss in 2008: “I’ve known Zahra for many years and am amazed by her transformation. This alone gives me inspiration.” Positive customer feedback is vital to any business, and it shows that Zahra must be doing something right. getfitwithzahra.co.uk @getfitwithzahra GetFitWithZahra

What ‘Italian’ is
I
talian food is pure and real and simple. That’s what Silvana Lanzetta is focused on – making Italian food, sharing it, and teaching about it. Through her blog and school Tutti a Tavola, Silvana spreads the message that it is possible, desirable, even easy, to cook authentic Italian food at home – on a budget. So, what’s the secret? “Cook from scratch,” she says. “When you buy pre-made food, you’re spending a lot of money for the privilege of putting something straight into the oven. “If you cook from scratch, you will spend a fraction of the amount, and it will taste much Silvana: cookery better,” she adds. teacher and food writer Born and raised in Napoli on her parents’ and grandparents’ traditional recipes and ingredients, Silvana is proud of her heritage and has now launched a mission to save the word ‘Italian’ from marketing overuse – see details on her blog: tutti-a-tavola.co.uk @Tutti_a_Tavola_ TuttiaTavola.Silvana

MIMI skincare moments
M
IMI seems to be everywhere you look at the moment: on the shelf at the newsagent (Look, Soul & Spirit, Black Hair magazines), in all sorts of Christmas gift guides, and at office pampering events (like the ‘Make your own skincare’ session at Rush Hair and Beauty, Ealing – pictured). The next big event for MIMI – and the natural skincare brand’s creator Jess Baker – will be the Northfields Night Market on 15 November. The best bit about having a stall at the market is meeting lots of new customers, explains Jess. “I love the look on people’s faces when they realise this is a completely original product, made by me right here in Ealing,” she says. It’s now also easy to order on the MIMI website, with free shipping to addresses in W5, W7 and W13 (use code: MIMIxxLOVESxxEALING). MakeItMakeIt.com @MakeItMIMI MakeItMIMI

W
e asked readers on Twitter to share any burning questions they would have before hiring a pet sitter. Here, Maxine Brightman of Ealing Cat and Dog Visits answers their concerns.
“I have full pet business insurance...”
Maxine Brightman, Ealing Cat and Dog Visits
Q: What would happen if my pet was taken ill whilst in your care? With prior agreement I would contact you in the first instance and then if required take your pet to a veterinary surgery of your choice. Q: What if you lost my house keys and couldn’t get access in to visit my cat? I’ve never yet lost a set of keys but just in case, I have full pet business insurance which includes key and replacement lock cover.
Q: What can I expect from you when you visit my two cats? I will wash up their bowls and put out fresh food and water. I clean or change the litter tray plus check for any ‘accidents’ around the house. I play, groom and give cuddles to your pets. I can also bring in any mail or newspapers and switch lights on and off plus open/close curtains if required. I can even water your plants if needed. Q: Why should I use you to look after my pet? That’s a good question. Because I’m honest, reliable and trustworthy, and I’m great with animals, which certainly helps! www.ealingcatanddogvisits. co.uk @ealingcats ealingcatanddogvisits

I can assure you I shall look after your pets as if they were my own. I am completely trustworthy, honest, kind and reliable. Oh, and I’m friendly too, so go on, give me a call, you’ll be glad you did! Quote ‘Contactus’ and receive 10% off your first booking.

The one-minute pitch is when everyone gets a chance to tell the group what they do. Emily Jacob shares her recent ‘netwinning’ presentation Welcome to the ‘pink section’ of the magazine, featuring members of the Ealing branch of the Fabulous Women networking group. Fabulous Women is a business network community whose mission is “to make women’s businesses more rewarding” by making women’s businesses more fun, more fulfilling – and more successful. The ethos of the group is based around five key concepts: connect, share, learn, grow – and succeed. Men – Marvellous Men – who share these values are welcome in the group. The Ealing branch meets at DoubleTree by Hilton, Ealing Common, 10am-12noon every first Friday of the month. www.fabulous-women.co.uk @Fab_Women WeAreFabulousWomen
‘My best one-minute’
I
’m Emily Jacob and I set up Curious Decisions to help marketing people make decisions based on an insatiable curiosity about their customers. Marketing influences people and society – and I passionately believe that anyone, or anything, that has the power of influence should use that influence to do good – so marketing ethics are core to my business philosophy. I am almost evangelical in my desire to see marketing market to all segments of society and have special expertise in LGBTQ diversity marketing with an exciting new fast work-shopping approach for businesses
ready in the New Year. I love helping people, and after almost two decades in corporate life, I’m really loving that I’m now helping women negotiate their careers through coaching. I believe that by understanding our innate strengths as women and understanding how to showcase these, we can create a kinder working environment and crash through that ‘glass ceiling’.
