his here’s our last big issue for the year, and we’re printing twice the number of copies as usual (i.e. 2000) so it’s a good magazine to have advertised in, in order to reach a long way in Ealing. Of course the online version of this stays online forever, which is a big boost for the featured businesses. There’s one more Contactus due in 2015: the Acton special, online 4 December. But before that, the handy guide we’re producing for the Ealing in Business expo on 19 November will be out 13 Nov. In January we’ll launch ‘The Ealinger’, a new online-only scrapbook (see p2). There’s just one full Contactus (printed and online) in 2016 – at Christmas. contactusealing.co.uk @ContactusEaling ContactusEalingHomebiz

Hello Season’s reasons Some readers are surprised to see the ‘Contactus Ealing’ Christmas issue come out so early in November. “It’s not even Christmas season yet!” I hear. But it’s this magazine’s role to inspire and encourage local businesses, and if we help at least one business to start planning seriously for Christmas, then this magazine has done its job right. So, is there really any point in offering festive specials, vouchers, money-back offers, bogofs, etc? It seems there is, and our Ealing businesses tell us what they’re giving away to their customers this year (see p4-7). Happy clicking through this issue (use the live links (where you see ) to connect with your favourite biz. Thanks for ‘shopping by’. SPORTING EALING FESTIVE OFFERS

Joyous sounds Ukulele strumming is surely the sound of Christmas! Here’s the Hanwell Ukulele Group at the Hanwell Winter Fair

What’s the point of having special offers and how is it good for business?

E

verybody loves a bargain, and if that bargain happens to solve a problem in a client’s life, and doesn’t lead to wastage and instead leaves a good impression with your client, it’s at the least an investment in the client relationship, and at the best will lead directly to increased immediate sales.

Ideas for attracting new clients

See if any of these ideas for attracting clients fits with your style of business: • buy one get one free (“bogof”) • buy one get one half price • order now, pay later • free product samples • free gift • money-off vouchers • prize draw

Make an offer • extra points/stickers/stamps • free consultation/assessment • code for online discount • donation to charity of choice • coupons • ‘happy hour’ • free delivery • ‘kids for free’ day • new product or service preview • exclusive networking meet-up • student/OAP/disabled special • discount for cash payment • discount for advance payment • limited access to special space • celebrity photo/interaction

Three tips Wondering what would make a good Christmas offer for your clients? Here are a few tips: 1 Connect the offer to your business, for example a taster session for a new service. 2 Package deals always go down well for the new year season. 3 Make it easy for the client to take up the offer or else it’s just wasted. Good luck.

Nicola Gaughan Iconic Creative “People are already on the lookout for gifts around Christmas, so they’re more open to a special offer or discount that they hear about. “If you have a bespoke or more creative offering it provides them with a way of giving something more tailored to the receiver of the gift.” (see Nicola’s ad on p22)

How discounts win new clients

W

hichever method you choose has to be one you’re confident is going to work.

mango (really!). A rival comes along and starts selling for £2 each as well. Woman #1 then cuts her price to £1.50 and sells out all her mangoes; there is no wastage and her overall profit more than makes up for the individual lower price. • The client who wins a buy-oneget-one-free offer may decide to share the extra product with a friend. Bingo: new customer tries, new customer likes.

• On paper, giving a discount may look like a loss-making exercise but if it helps footfall and gets customers through the door or onto that website, then it’s often worth it. • Remember the story about the woman selling mangoes at the market – she sets up her stall and starts selling at £2 per • Samples or taster sessions are useful if your product or service normally comes in a large size or costs a big chunk of money or time; people don’t have to commit and if they enjoy a little bit of the new experience, that increases the likelihood that they’ll come back for more. • Post-dating a money-off voucher is a way of spreading out your clients, and means a client will come back to you when it’s a less busy time and you can invest more attention.

“Samples or taster sessions are useful if your product or service normally comes in a large size”

T

he “#Pitshanger” campaign got airborne via Twitter (and Facebook) in early September but stepped up a gear on 1 October as soon as it was announced that Pitshanger Lane was one of the three finalists in the London category of the Great British High Street Awards and that public voting (making up 50 per cent of the mark) was open. The campaign is the dreamchild of estate agent, John Martin, chairman of Pitshanger Village Traders Association, who rallied fellow traders, the Pitshanger community and Ealing Council around his enthusiasm to win the award, supported by local Twitter account @PitshangerW5 tweeting daily photographs and quotes from each of the traders. “To win this would mean so much to Pitshanger, one of the few remaining truly independent

high streets in the UK,” says John. “Thank you to everyone who has voted to show how proud you are of this Ealing high street.” Using social media, posters and flyers, as well as good old face-to-face communication, John and the traders have kept people voting daily, even signing up the older members of the community to email addresses and helping them to vote. On Twitter, supporters from all areas of the borough, and many overseas, posted messages and photos proving they’d voted. The GBHighSt judges have been to visit – their score makes up the other 50 per cent of the mark – and the voting closes on 13 November. #Pitshanger won’t have to wait much longer to know the result.

ow often have you wondered what it would be like to have stained glass in your home? Zoe Angle’s customers call her up and say “I’d love to have stained glass in my front door.” Or sometimes they have an old stained glass panel that needs repairing. After meeting with the customer to discuss his or her exact needs, Zoe produces a design (along with a free estimate of time and cost). From her Angle Glass studio in Acton, she manufactures the stained glass windows, and then installs them to the delight of her customers. Zoe has over 20 years’ Artist Zoe Angle: experience and a loyal client has a loyal client base of repeat customers. Here base is some feedback from one such loyal customer: “Zoe’s attention to detail is what makes her work so extraordinary. Our brief was to create three stained glass panels that looked like they’d always been there – we couldn’t be happier with the outcome!” www.angleglass.co.uk angleglass.co.uk

Beyond Ealing In case the Contactus Ealing Business Diary of local networking events listings, updated every Monday morning at tinyurl.com/ EalingBusinessDiary doesn’t have enough to keep you going, there’s of course the internet to help you find meetings outside the borough but still close by and easy to attend. Eventbrite is useful for this – once you manage to input your search criteria and location, it lists what’s going on in Hounslow or Brent. Another website to sign up to is meetup.com, from where a weekly email summarises the various networking and socialising groups in the area. At findnetworkingevents.com, you can narrow the town/city search down to ‘Ealing’.

The Ealing Homebiz cartoon ‘Home workers’ posture’

Hello, I’m Carlene Bender - editor, publisher, designer, artist, writer, chief cook and bottle washer on ‘Contactus Ealing’ local business magazine. My business is advertising – people pay me to promote their business to the local audience. The difference between Contactus and any other magazine is that the advertisers are actually the people I write about in the magazine. I have a couple more editions to put out in 2015 so here is my call to action – I’d like introductions to businessowners who already advertise in print, for example in the Ealing Gazette newspaper or Families West magazine.

Drawing: Carlene Bender

I’d like to meet people who understand how print advertising works, and who’d appreciate the value that they get out of a Contactus advert.

Thank you, I’m Carlene Bender of ‘Contactus Ealing’, promoting local businesses online, in print and in person. contactusealing.co.uk

Exhibitors pick up tips for 19 Nov expo

“W

ear comfortable shoes”; and “Tell your friends, again” may be two of the most useful tips that Ealing in Business exhibitors picked up at the ‘Make the most of your Expo’ training in October. Sponsored by the London Broncos rugby league club’s In Business With The Broncos networking club, the exhibitors training session was not only an opportunity to learn how to promote their stands, engage with visitors, and make plans for following-up, but a chance for exhibitors to get to know one

another and find early ways to start working together. Nearly 40 local businesses have taken stands at the expo, set to take place on Thursday 19 November at the Ealing Town Hall. The Ealing in Business expo is brought to you in partnership with Ealing Council Regeneration Team (see page 21), working together with three local businesses – The Training Pack, Ealing Mums in Business, and Contactus Ealing. ealing.biz @EalingBiz ealinginbusiness

EXPO GUIDE ADS If you’re one of the lucky ones to be reading this magazine online in the first few days of publication, and wondering how come your advert isn’t among its pages, take heart because the Ealing in Business Expo Guide will be published online on 6 November, and is still open for advertising. So if you Contactus missed your chance to EALING IN BUSINESS exhibit at the expo, and you missed your EXPO EVENT GUIDE chance to advertise in this magazine, you can still reach thousands of Ealing business-owners by advertising in the Expo Guide. Although it won’t be a full Contactus publication, it will still be published and marketed in the same way as this magazine, for example. The advantage is that it will be distributed straight into the hands of local businesspeople at the expo on 19 November. If you’re interested to reach such a B2B audience, please email me (Carlene) by 4 November. Advert sizes are £20 (text-only: 140 characters); mini-ad £50 and quarter-page ad £100. Basic artwork and matching story are included in the price. info@contactusealing.co.uk MAGAZINES

Now you can make that idea happen. The Ealing Council Regeneration Department has launched the West Ealing Champions Fund, offering grants of up to £2,500 to be used to make this part of the borough

Applications must be submitted by email to angela@ ealingcvs.org.uk before 5pm on Tuesday 8 December 2015.
