But then, what next? That’s the point where so many local businesses get stumped. And that’s what our Let’s Tweet Together sessions (not quite ‘classes’) are for: an opportunity to practise tweeting in a safe setting. The first round of these hands-on sessions were well attended; so more are planned. Keep in touch on Twitter to find out dates of the May sessions, which will be held at Chat&Meet coffee shop (see p20). @ContactusEaling

Hello Here comes sunshine Little green shoots appear, temperatures spike over 10, jackets replace woolly coats, and then one day all of a sudden the clocks change and we’re in a tizzy, and in no time it’s the mad countdown to summer. But let’s stop and herald the spring, a good time for businesses in Ealing, where so much of our day-to-day life is full of trees and plants that show the clarity of the season. Tis the season to refresh and renew. In this issue we celebrate some of the businesses who get their best customers when the weather switches between winter and summer

5 ways to rejuvenate your business Maybe you miss the thrill of the startup phase of your business, or you’d just like to spark some enthusiasm among your staff. Here are a few ideas to make things interesting again 1. Spring clean There’s no other way to say it – tidying up, filing away, and throwing away; even a fresh coat of paint on your office wall can work wonders. 2. Outsource something So many business-owners feel a sense of relief, gratitude and release once they let someone else do what they’re no good at. For example stop trying to do all your own leaflet distribution. Or all your cold-calls. It may not be as expensive as you think to pay a specialist company to do these humdrum tasks. Or, you may find the cost is well worth it. 3. Add a product or service Have your customers grown used to you providing the same old product or service? Maybe

think about introducing a related add-on. Remember to publicise your new offer, however, so that your loyal clients won’t miss out. 4. Rebrand At a talk at the Ealing Business Forum last year, Richard Palfreeman, CEO of Northfields Estate Agents, gave his top tip: rebrand every four years. That could include a revised logo, a new slogan, new website or new marketing theme or project. Smaller firms may not be able to afford a full rebrand, but make sure something about your business looks new. 5. Collaborate & partner Imagine chugging along in your business, and along comes another business that completely fills in the gap around yours. For example, for a media buyer looking to place clients’ adverts, the perfect fit would be the local newspaper. There’d be no competition, only mutual support. So look out for that kind of natural synergy that makes working with another business sometimes so beautiful. – CB

VOX POP What will you be doing to freshen up your business? (via Businesses in Ealing Facebook group)

Sharon McLean: 1. Review your customers and look for more 2. Review your expenditure Nicola Gaughan: I’m looking at ways of monetising my photography with products Gabriela Flores Cerbone: Promoting the business ... We are launching a new menu soon... Leila Louise Butt: Pat yourself on the back for what you have achieved through the dreary winter, streamline processes and organise resources, plan and launch new marketing. Glenda Shawley: I think it’s about staying in tune with our target market, listening to their changing needs and adapting our services accordingly. Aisha Ejaz: Well, with spring upon us, my business is rebranding. A fresh brand with improved value, adding services for clients is part of the growth strategy. Alexandra Merisoiu: I am almost ready with my book, a beginner’s guide for women runners. Then I have two natural movement training programmes in partnership coming out soon and one on career coaching. Of course the usual 1-2-1 and group coaching are booming. Speaking gigs and workshops lined up already until June. For the moment these are the major points, many smaller projects though, but at this point people are reaching out to work with me as partners or clients so many more ways to rejuvenate my business.

ilingual children are nearly the norm in Ealing – and here’s a nursery that caters for the local French-English families. Les Jardins d’Emile is set to open its first UK branch in Hanwell this spring, located close to the Hanwell Library on Cherington Road. Founder Emmanuelle Emmanuelle: Guillaudeux – a former Femme strong ethics Entrepreneure Brittany nominee – set up the first Les Jardins d’Emile (named after her third child) in Rennes in 2009, based on strong ethical and organic principles, for example: “to smoothly discover community life”; and where the use for example of chemicals and Wi-Fi is limited. She describes Les Jardins d’Emile as a micro-crèche, which “combines the advantages of having a nanny with those of a crèche”. So the child-to-carer ratio will always be small (3:1). jde.creche@gmail.com @Jardinsdemile www.facebook.com/ lesjardinsdemiledaycarenurseries

f you ever wondered about the true colours of spring, take a look at the AgnesZen London logo (in advert at left): a bright green of new growth and revival, together with the deep brown that matches the hue of a rich and fertile soil. “Yes,” says Agnes Gaudron. “We can feel that freshness of spring – when the skin is crying out to be detoxed from the effects of a drying winter. “It’s a time to go back to being more healthy,” she adds. And with the type of season Agnes: for fresh changeover that we tend to spring skin have here in London, where winter often gives way to summer with nary a glance at spring, Agnes is gearing up to a season booked full of manicures, pedicures, waxing, and other beauty treatments. It helps that it is the French standard of beauty that Agnes subscribes to, which means that her skills, products and style are all superior quality. Italian catering Amalfi Caffe is known on Mattock Lane for its Italian coffees and fresh home-cooked food served up by resident Italian chef Sante Cerbone. What is happening at Dickens Yard

I

n our Jan/Feb issue focusing on startup businesses, we wondered what was the plan for the 100,000 sq ft of commercial space at the new Dickens Yard development in Ealing Broadway. We didn’t manage to get a comment from Dickens Yard developers St George in time for that story, but then a few days later St George hosted the monthly Ealing Business Forum networking meeting at the site, and we were able to get some answers for our questions: Q: When will the 23 commercial units be leased and ready for business? A: “When building work is complete in 2018. The retailers who are right for Dickens Yard in 2015 may not be right in 2018 when the building is done.” Q: What type of shops will be “preferred”? “Aspirational brands. Think high

fashion retail and white-cloth table-clothed restaurants.” “A card shop wouldn’t do very well here.” “Nor a pub.” Q: Is there any space provided for smaller businesses e.g. a popup space or market hall? A: “There’s no provision for subsidised smaller business space. Market Square will be available for outdoor stalls and pop-up events.” Q: How will you get footfall to the area (according to campaigners Save Ealing’s Centre, there is no history of shops at Dickens Yard, and no through-traffic to benefit whoever sets up shop there). A: “Once we get the shops, people will come. “Additionally, there will be 300 underground public parking places alongside the 300 residents’ parking, which will also draw shoppers.” – Carlene Bender

t 90 Pitshanger Lane, just about midway on the sunny north side, is Cinnamon cafe. It’s mum-friendly, child-friendly, dog-friendly and rather importantly when it comes to Ealing: cupcake-friendly. Owners Rachael and Dan Scott have been running the cafe since March 2013, and are proud of their menu packed with award-winning coffee, specialty loose leaf tea, milkshakes, smoothies, and a wide range of fresh food dishes. But it is the amazing cupcakes, homemade by local supplier Terry Norris, and the “bespoke Cinnamon and Orange Cake exclusive to Cinnamon” that gets the cafe the most attention in Pitshanger village and beyond. Local resident Emma Chard-Cumming gives

the cafe five stars on Facebook, so we asked her to comment on the cupcakes. This is what she said: “Where else could you get a homemade moist sponge cupcake with the choice of

Give it a try

W

hen it comes to business networking, it’s important to find the “tribe” that suits your personality. You also need to make sure you can get enough business from whichever group you decde to stick with. So for example it doesn’t make sense to only meet up with local mums, as cosy as that feels, if your business is geared to office workers in the City. If it’s a social group you’re after, that’s fine. But if you’re doing serious business networking, it has to make business sense. On the other hand, don’t give up if after one meeting you feel completely out of depth. Give it another try, or maybe visit another group. How to maximise #EalingHour

S

ince I started running Let’s Tweet Together hands-on Twitter classes, I started looking more closely at how local businesses use Twitter, and specifically during Ealing Hour on a Tuesday night. Ealing Hour, which has run from 8-9pm every Tuesday since March 2014 under the hashtag #EalingHour, is a great way for local businesses to spread their message. Here are a few suggestions about how to make the most of the hour: 1. Type in the hashtag. Just because you’ve tweeted between 8pm and 9pm on a Tuesday doesn’t mean you’ve taken part in Ealing Hour, unless you include the letters exactly like this: #EalingHour 2. Click on the hashtag. That way, you get to see all the discussions taking place during the hour, and you can choose which one(s) to join.

3. Retweet and follow others. This helps to spread the reach of Ealing Hour, and increases the chances that others will retweet and follow you back. 4. Draft tweets beforehand. Make sure you have your own messages to send out every

“Messages can come in at a frantic rate, and you don’t want to miss a thing!” week so that you don’t miss your opportunity to promote your business. Drafting your messages in advance means that during the hour you can focus on interacting with others. 5. But be live online. Scheduling your tweets in advance (using Buffer, Hootsuite, etc) is useful, but will fall flat during the hour when other tweeters try to engage with you and you’re not there. 6. Remember to refresh your feed. Messages can come in at a frantic rate, and you don’t want to miss a thing! – Carlene Bender, editor (Latest: @cathpg, @Barnabites and I are taking over running Ealing Hour after a superb job done by @NorthfieldsLive. Eat Me Drink Me food market on Sundays too

F

ollowing on the success of her Food Truck Friday in the Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre, Kate McKenzie a.k.a Eat Me Drink Me has now launched a twice-monthly Sunday food market. The first Sunday event on March 22 saw the pavement in front of Ealing Town Hall filled with food stalls selling a variety of dishes including Venezuelan arepas, Mexican burritos, and Jamaican jerk chicken. Vegan food was also on offer. Other popular stalls featured Pitshanger/South Ealing butchers Hook and Cleaver, Pitshanger’s Charlie’s Fruit Bowl, and Northfields’ Mags Petite Fleur. #EMDMSundays are on every first and third Sundays, 11am to 4pm, with covered seating, Kate: “delighted” children’s crafts, and live music. “We’re delighted with the response locally. The first Sunday market had such a lovely, community feel and we can’t wait to make it bigger and better,” says Kate, herself based in North Ealing. www.eat-me-drink-me.co.uk @EatMeDrinkMeLDN EatMeDrinkMeUK

“This would never have happened without Chat&Meet @Ealing Blueprint” In my role as chair of West Ealing Neighbours I’m delighted that Chat&Meet @Ealing Blueprint is now a part of our community. On a personal level I have dropped in a number of times and always had an interesting conversation with whoever happens to be there. For example, on my last visit I met Niall Cullen, director of Prefacemorn and had a very useful discussion which may lead to his integrated dance theatre company being involved in this year’s West Ealing SoundBite Festival. This would never have happened without Chat&Meet @Ealing Blueprint and the way it’s run by Geoff and Gita. I have also used it for a meeting of the SoundBite Festival organising committee as it offers both a comfortable and convenient meeting place in central West Ealing which is convenient for everyone to reach, whether by foot, car or public transport. Chat&Meet @Ealing Blueprint offers an important meeting place where all sorts of useful business and community connections can be made. It’s not like a big-chain coffee shop where people go in and sit by themselves. Chat@Meet creates an environment that enables people to easily talk to one another if they want and that’s how these connections are made. – David Highton

Gita Langston explains how the West Ealing coffee shop and coworking hub came about What? A pilot business hub, with a great coffee shop based in West Ealing, London. Why? To provide small-business owners in the borough of Ealing with a destination to work in, meet with each other, meet with clients, and do business. Who? It’s a joint venture between the Ealing Council Regeneration team (including frontline staff member Mathieu Rogers) and Gita and Geoff Langston of GLconnects.com who are Ealing residents, and run their own business from Ealing. How? Gita and Geoff’s contribution to the project is to manage the café, the hub space,

Local? Chat&Meet @EalingBlueprint supports local businesses by selling locally produced cakes and apple juice and is currently featuring pictures by Ealing artists. When? The pilot started on February 3, 2015 and wraps-up the current format at the end of June 2015. The pilot will inform the Council’s next steps around the business hub initiative. – Gita Langston owns Chat&Meet Coffee Shop, and manages the @EalingBlueprint coworking hub www.ealingblueprint.co.uk @chatnmeetcoffee @EalingBlueprint ealingblueprint

Delicious cakes, cut-price coffees and a very warm welcome for sole traders like me! As an artist I struggle to find places willing to exhibit my pictures so I was delighted to be able to put my paintings up at Chat&Meet. It was also wonderful to be asked if one of my pictures could be used on the membership cards. It really is refreshing to find an organisation so committed to investing in and promoting local businesses like mine. Jessica Rose, painter and printmaker Chat&Meet is great. I have attended networking and workshops there. It’s really friendly in a relaxed environment. Perfect place to meet clients over a cup of coffee. Kate Edmondson, wedding dress designer I would say that it is a great place to relax and meet new people from the local community. You have created a very welcoming atmosphere and it’s fantastic that you are promoting local businesses, including tasty cakes! Robert Pain, business startup mode

Meet, chat, work

Chat&Meet café is like an oasis for home-workers. I do not usually go for coffee by myself, however after attending a few events there I have popped in a few more times. Not only does Gita give you a lovely warm welcome and make you feel at home, there are always networking opportunities and interesting conversations springing up! I have found out about local events going on, and caught up with the local gossip while promoting my own little business. Nat, LetterboxLovers leaflet distribution

obody can buy from a business they’ve never heard of but businesses can waste a lot of money when they don’t understand how to do their marketing. At a recent Ealing Mums in Business meetup, Glenda Shawley of The Training Pack shared five classic marketing mistakes many small (and some not so small) businesses make. These were: • No consistent marketing activity • Lack of clarity about the target customer • Differentiating on lowest price • Selling features not benefits Glenda: helping • It’s all about me local businesses Glenda is launching a monthly with their marketing business growth clinic in Ealing on April 30 to help local businesses be more effective with their marketing. The working life of a freelancer Working as a freelancer has its pros and cons. Esther Needle highlights some of the cons 1. Nobody knows your name – because you’re always signed in to the company server as “Freelance1” (or 2, 3, 4 etc). 2. You get all the technical, rubbish jobs that nobody wants to do. And then when you mess up you don’t get booked again for six months. 3. The other freelancers pretend you don’t exist – competition is fierce. 4. You never get to attend staff meetings, team lunches, going down the pub after work. None of the benefits; all of the work. 5. When you have a work-from-

home day they demand to call you on your landline so there’s no chance of nipping to the shops. 6. When a permanent job comes up, nobody tells you. It’s not like you could take it anyway. The reason why you’re freelance is why you’re still freelance. 7. It goes without saying that you don’t get sick pay, pensions, paid holidays, birthday cards... 8. Of course you don’t get Easter, Christmas and summer holidays off to spend with your children. No – that’s when the full-time staff get holidays. That’s when you get work. Are you a freelancer? What is it like for you? Email me: esther.needle@ contactusealing.co.uk

Q: How long can a website get away with small changes Mark Wardell, before you MW marketing need a full redesign? If you want to keep up-to-date with online trends then 18 to 24 months is about the right amount of time to be thinking about a new design. As a small business you need to look at changes in technology and consumer behaviour and if your website is catering for them. If not, time for a new design.

Q&A

MW marketing build websites for small to medium size businesses. Our websites are built with Wordpress, the most flexible, powerful and smartest way to publish your content online.

Q: What’s the advantage of working with SMEs? Generally you spend less time deliberating over the detail and more time working on important things like content and user experience. It is vital that you tell your story consistently on your website and across social media, and working directly with the decision-makers/owners means this can happen more easily and much more quickly. www.mwmarketing.co.uk @MWmarketing MWmarketing
