Hello All work and all play I haven’t always tried to hide the fact that I play a bit of cricket for the Old Actonians Ladies team (pictured above). And as these two beloved worlds of mine – sport and local business – intergrew, the more I saw how they depended on each other. This was the message I hoped to share with other business owners in this annual sport themed edition (p4-11): sports clubs are a rich source of leads; ignore them at your loss. Another theme this month is the Ealing Autumn Festival, proving that music and art and poetry are business-related too (see pages 12-14). Happy clicking through this issue (use the live links (where you see ) to connect with your favourite biz. Thanks for ‘shopping by’. port is big business in Ealing and many of the same rules apply across both worlds: sports clubs need “clients” (i.e. players; members), and businesses often need to work together as a team to get a product out or deliver a service. Sports clubs are consumers of a wide range of business services and products, from logo branding to equipment to home ground upkeep. Take for example Old Actonians Sports Club in South Ealing, one of the few multi-sport clubs in Ealing. For each of the nine sports you can play at Old As, there is a not-so-micro system of business support built up. This includes services like website design and upkeep, transport, catering, fundraising, printed material, local advertising, PR, trophies, accommodation, coaching staff, club photographer, and so on.
Sport is business In the past many of these jobs would have been done by club volunteers but increasingly these tasks are being outsourced to local businesses. There is also of course the symbiotic relationship of sports clubs and players needing sponsors to help pay for kit and running costs, and businesses using that need to gain positive exposure in front of a crowd. Sporting events often inspire a whole raft of service industries to build up around them. Later this year for example it will be interesting to see how Pitshanger Lane changes once London Broncos relocates close by to the Ealing Trailfinders complex in Vallis Way. Will there be more takeaway food services (a pop-up food market along Scotch Common?) for the rugby league fan passing through? More therapy options
available on the Lane to treat the influx of sports-people to the area? Or car parking services (park and ride? private parking space rent? valet parking?) off Argyle Road on match days? Even non-team sports create a system of businesses around them: think of the thousands of runners who participate in the Ealing Half Marathon. They boost hotel sales, restaurant takings, and spot-buys like sports clothes and equipment, not to mention the post-run massage and pub celebration. Multiply this by the number of fans and supporters they bring along and the amount of business we’re talking becomes clear. The Ealing Half Marathon has helped raise over £500k for charity, which is big business in itself. But that story is for another edition of Contactus... – Carlene Bender

Q&A
Kevin Mahoney Chairman, Old Actonians Sports Club
Q: How much interaction with local businesses does the club have, and what form does that interaction take? A mixture of everything – logos on playing shirts, banners at the ground, website advertising, donated raffle prizes. Also a number of local businesses use the club and grounds to host parties, team
building days and sports days. Recently the club has hosted TalkTalk, Kantarmedia, Carphone Warehouse, London Transport, and British Gas, among others. Q: As a businessman yourself (Kevin is a retired director of Savills), in what ways would you say running a sports club is similar to running a business? It’s exactly the same I would say. But balancing providing affordable support for all, in place of profit, although we do need to build and hold reserves for rainy days. (See ad on p2) www.oldactonians.net
VOX POP: COMMENT We put the question of mixing sport and business out on the social media, and got a few responses. This from the #TuesdayQuestion over on our Facebook group, ‘Businesses in Ealing Contactus’: “What similarities do you see between playing a sport and running a business?”
“
Alan Outten If you can successfully manage a large group of 14-15 year-old boys, the rest is easy! Mandy Lightfoot Each sport has rules to follow. I help businesses follow the rules, ensuring they are compliant with Health and Safety Law. I enjoy outdoor swimming, and keep checking where I’m heading, so I don’t drift off course. Similar to my business, I’m always checking if I’m going in the right direction, and change course if needed. Alexandra Merisoiu In sport as in business it is about building strong foundations. With strong foundations we can then build a strong structure. Weak foundations will weaken the whole structure and even bring it down. I was lucky to have found a business mentor who helped me do just this, build strong foundations for my business and it is now a strong structure.

nfortunately, some of us are going to get hurt during the Ealing Half Marathon. Here are three bits of injury advice from Ealing Broadway physiotherapists W5 Physio: 1 Use the RICE protocol: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation for the W5 Physio’s Patsy Hayden first 72 hours, after and Stewart Ramsay which you may take running the Ealing Half anti-inflammatory tablets Marathon last year only if safe to do so; 2 Avoid any activity that causes further pain, i.e. we wouldn’t recommend running on a sprained ankle; 3 Once you’re mobile enough, book in to see us and start the road to recovery – the sooner physio treatment can begin, the faster we can accelerate the healing process. www.w5physio.co.uk @W5Physio W5Physio

Sponsoring individuals We are approached a lot to undertake sponsorship, normally in the form of direct monetary donations for bike rides. Rather than give money we have a programme of supporting riders in the form of products; so our riders test our products and report back. We support about half a dozen individuals and one racing team, none of whom overtly promote our company but it’s something we are considering doing. We also support our staff in undertaking community events – so here are three of them (Michael, Martin and William, in photo at left) taking part, in obligatory Bike Hub clothing, with our bikes. – David Eales, London Bike Hub
@ealingtfrugby Spot on! #nevergivingup #celebrateSuccess #pursuitofexcellence @PeterPrickett I think you have to try to eliminate self doubt in both. So you need #discipline #hardwork
Where’s the overlap?
Parallel worlds
Do you agree that running a sports club is like running a business? London Broncos’ Tom Williams:
The parallels between business and sport manifest themselves in teamwork, perseverance, discipline and fairness. In business, I think it is fair to say to be successful you need to exhibit these qualities day in, day out. – Donald Collins, director, Go View London (sponsors of Ealing Acton Whistlers FC, Old Priorians Rugby Club, and a player at Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club)
A sports club is a business first and foremost, especially at the professional level. We have a product to promote and sell and this is no different to any other business.

The London Broncos Business Club takes elements from other networking organisations to create a relaxed environment but one that encourages all members to share contacts and generate business for one another. There are some great additional benefits as well, such as the fun of meeting first-team players, and getting to sit in to talks from London Broncos head coach Andrew Henderson, sharing his tips and skills for leadership and team building. We also get some very interesting speakers to come along that you would probably not find anywhere else. Q: Is it membership-only? EALING AUTUMN FESTIVAL
Local Magna Carta paintings currently on tour of Ealing libraries
Ealing celebrates 800 years of the Magna Carta Dreaming of freedom in West London Gillian Spragg, artistic director of the Ealing Autumn Festival explains the theme behind this year’s festival:
“C
elebrating the Magna Carta is a tremendously exciting idea to take up this year. How we exercise our democratic rights can really matter and there could not be a better moment to delve into the origins of our freedom, human rights and democracy. “It is Gillian fascinating to see how all the fundamental ideas of what is fair and right have changed very little over the last 800 years, though there are also aspects which at that time depended on rather different customs from ours.”
T
his year’s Ealing Autumn Festival is celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, with one of the main events an exhibition of unique coloured paintings in libraries across the borough. ‘Magna Carta turns 800’ launched in June and visitors have been admiring the 26 paintings based on the coatsof-arms of the 25 Magna Carta barons and King John which are on display. The exhibition is designed and organised by Diana Braybrook, a practising artist in west London, and tutor to the 4020 Art Group based
Batrisyie Hussain with her coat-of-arms based on those of William de Forz, Earl of Albemarle
at Hanwell Community Centre. Other Magna Carta themed events being held include a poetry competition, musical concerts and big draw sessions. Full details are available at: www.ealingautumnfestival.co.uk

Russian choir to sing One of the highlights of the festival is a three-day tour from outstanding Russian chamber choir Voskresenije of St Petersburg. They will be engaging with school and community groups and giving a full scale performance during their visit. One of the works they will be performing is excerpts from Vespers which was written out of all Russian text and reference books by the new government regime of 1917. The choir will perform at Acton Library (October 19 3.30-4.30pm), Southall Library (October 20, 5.30-6.30pm) and Ealing Central Library (October 21, 6-7pm) and will be joined by singers and players from Ealing schools and community musicians.
Voskresenije will be singing at local libraries
Festival loving Hammersmith Osteopath Alison Judah is “delighted to support the Ealing Autumn Festival – it is a wonderful selection of cultural events. She adds. “I particularly enjoy the music of the Russian choir, Voskresenije. Go impromptu There was a bit of a networking slow-down over the summer holidays, and it’s taking me a while to get back up to speed. Not all business networking has to be super-organised, however. You can get by without the high-profile speaker, agenda and full list of attendees. This month for example our Contactus Meetup showed the beauty of less than a week’s notice. It was a small meetup, but the ideas and conversation flowed, and I even took notes to follow-up with. As we ramp up to the hectic Christmas season I’m expecting to look back with fondness on that quiet meeting! Keep up with local networking events listings updated every Monday morning in our Ealing Business Diary at tinyurl.com/ EalingBusinessDiary. – Carlene Bender Editor-publisher, Contactus

Reach your audience with the power of radio

ucked away in a black-painted building in the heart of Hanwell, Westside Radio pumps out hip hop and R&B music 24/7 on 89.6FM. “Westside has a dedicated audience who not only listens to us on the radio, but online and via our mobile app,” says station manager Sone Palda. Station manager With an average listenership Sone Palda: “we are at the cutting edge” of 40,000 per week (250,000 potential reach), this community station is a useful place for Ealing-based businesses to advertise and get heard (listen out for our Contactus, Ealing Hour and Ealing in Business ads on there!). See their rates at: tinyurl.com/WestsideRadioRates. Sone is proud of the impact of the station, which started in Southall in 2007 and moved to Hanwell four years ago. “We are at the cutting edge of urban trends, new technology and social media,” he says. thisiswestside.com @thisiswestside Thisiswestside

ith nearly all of our 36 or so exhibition spaces already taken at the first business-to-business Ealing in Business expo set for Thursday 19 November (quick! if you hurry you can smash-grab the last available stand for £199 – click on the ‘Apply to exhibit’ button on the ealing.biz website), we are happy to start sharing information about our exhibitors. For visitors, we know this information is crucial as it helps with pre-planning a day out at the expo. Under the Exhibitors tab at the top of the ealing.biz homepage, drop down to ‘Who’s exhibiting?’ to see a list of exhibiting businesses, either alphabetically or by category. Clicking on the company logo leads to a contact details page, which you can use to schedule informal (or formal, depends on you) 1:1s on the day of the expo. We’ll continue updating the website with details about the remaining exhibitors, and how to get in touch with them
before – and after – the expo. Also check out the timetable of events (above), so if you can’t stay for the whole day, you can decide which bits are most useful to you, and organise accordingly. Special mention to James Dean Digital for our website design. The Ealing in Business expo is brought to you in partnership with Ealing Council Regeneration Team (see page 19), working together with three local businesses – The Training Pack, Ealing Mums in Business, and Contactus Ealing. ealing.biz @EalingBiz ealinginbusiness

The hub question Ealing Council needs local businesses’ help to win funding for a new workspace in West Ealing
Kings Cross Impact Hub
A
s Contactus was going to press, the Ealing Council Economic Regeneration team was busy seeking the views of local businesses to support its bid for a competitive new Mayor of London fund which will provide new shared workspace across the capital. This new £20m fund, the London Regeneration Fund, will “breathe new life into London’s high streets and places of work. The aim is to make the most of the city’s wealth of talent in creativity and technology,” according to the london.gov.uk website. Building on the success of the Ealing Blueprint workspace, a proposal for new coworking space in West Ealing is under development. If successful it would offer space for new, start-up and micro-businesses as well as for home workers: somewhere to network, rent a desk, and access meeting rooms. Users will be able to tap into a range of support features

ulie Brazier and Andy Berthier are prepared to challenge the typical high street estate agents, so they’re doing it all online. Their Chiswick-based business, Hogarth Property Services, a “family-owned local independent residential sales, lettings and managing agency” is expanding across West London into Ealing and Acton. “We wanted to offer something different,” says Andy. “We’d like to be ‘not-so-corporate’: we’re a local couple in business, interested in the community, and providing a quality property service to local people. “And although we’re an onlinebased agency, we have all the relevant accreditation and we
are proud of our high standards of professionalism and adhering to industry regulations.” Julie explains that in the current market, “there’s space for everyone, including our online service, as clients all have different needs. “Some people are not comfortable dealing with a ‘big corporate’, they appreciate a more personal, individual service.” “We also support the #keepitlocal campaign,” adds Julie, “working with our neighbours who are tradespeople and who offer property-related services. This all benefits the local economy.” hogarthpropertyservices.co.uk @Hogarthproperty hogarthproperty
We set up Hogarth Property Services to offer the level of service that we would have liked to receive ourselves – a personal, friendly service where we really listen to our clients’ needs and expectations. We offer complete transparency for all parties including a fixed fee pricing structure. Not having a High Road branch allows us to pass these savings on to our clients. Get in touch with us if you’re moving into, out of, or somewhere else in West London, or if you just have a property to sell or rent. – Julie and Andy

Ealing Tweetup BBQ Lots of comments have been coming in bemoaning why Contactus has to go down to just one magazine a year in 2016. Thought it might be easier to illustrate than extrapolate. ‘Family’, ‘Freelance Work’ and ‘Obligations’ had been forced to make way for ‘Contactus’. But they couldn’t all quite fit, really. - CB
