EVERYONE AT THE COLLIERVILLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TAKES PRIDE IN THE SERVICE WE OFFER TO EACH ONE OF OUR MEMBERS. WE UNDERSTAND WHAT THE CHAMBER STANDS FOR AND WE EMBRACE THAT RESPONSIBILITY.
CCollierville is proud of how this community has proven itself to be a frequent choice of large corporations to locate and re-locate corporate offices in our town. An easy drive through Schilling Farms will reflect that. We are proud of what we have to offer corporate neighbors and their employees: great schools, a warm and inviting community for young families, and a community committed to a secure and inviting lifestyle to all residents.
One of our singularly most important functions is to look to the future and help our members and the community face the challenges around the corner. We know that the future will bring opportunities and new challenges to our business community, and as confident as I am about change itself, I am equally confident that a prime moving force of our future will be our small businesses.
Looking at our business community, I am reminded time and again of the power of small business and just what they mean to this community, the state, and our nation. Over one million Tennesseans work for small businesses, representing close to 150,000 individual businesses that employ anywhere from four to 100
employees. Nearly half of all Americans are employed by small businesses. The sole proprietorships, the mom-and-pop retail establishments, and the small manufacturers contribute so much to this nation, and a drive through the commercial and retail districts in our town reflects the power of small business.
Perhaps there’s another aspect of small businesses — a more personal one — that gives me reason to appreciate the power of such companies and organizations.
Your Collierville Chamber of Commerce itself represents a prime example of a small business. We face many of the same challenges small businesses across the country must confront every day, and we understand the amplified importance of what each individual employee brings to our mission. I’m proud to say that we have a small and very driven team of individuals who focus on our mission. They work hard for each and every member every day, no matter the size or nature of your business. It’s what we do. It’s what we’re proud to do.
MARK HEUBERGER President and CEO Collierville Chamber of Commerce
TThe magazine you hold in your hands represents a great deal to me. It’s a reminder to look forward in hope and to prepare for challenges. This magazine also serves as a symbol of my tenure as Chairman of the Board of the Collierville Chamber of Commerce, a role I have been honored to assume. My experience with the Chamber goes back many years, both as a general member and as a board member, and it’s a relationship I treasure.
The Chamber’s mission provides a constant reminder of what we’re about to all members, from sole proprietors to the officers of the largest corporations. Your Chamber is “dedicated to building community through advocacy for a business-friendly environment and helping businesses thrive.”
Over the past several years we’ve witnessed just how Chamber efforts have aligned with the goals and needs of our members. Sold-out Monthly Membership Meetings and Women’s Leadership Network gatherings speak to the quality of our programs and speakers, as well as to the relevancy of such events and the networking capacity of the organization. Our annual Excellence in Business Awards celebrates member organizations and individuals who have proven their value to our community in noteworthy fashion. It has grown into an event the whole business community can be proud of. And, I can’t speak highly enough about our newest initiative, the Ascend Regional Business Summit held in the fall.
I know that our community will successfully face new challenges and will explore new opportunities. My belief is bolstered by the many individuals and stories that populate this magazine.
The Chamber will continue to build a business community that rewards hard work, welcomes new members, and celebrates our many successes. I promise that.

STEADY WHEEL
AT THE
AN INTERVIEW WITH MAYOR STAN JOYNER
CMayor Stan Joyner exudes a relaxed confidence and genuine friendliness as he discusses his background, his reflections on the town, and the future challenges he recognizes for the community. He has a deep understanding of his hometown that comes with a lifelong appreciation and a commitment to civic involvement that spans close to 40 years.
“I started on the planning commission in ’87 and served 12 years,” he remembers. “I had three terms as an alderman before I was mayor, so I’ve actually been on the board since 1999.” Now in his fourth term as Mayor, he’s come a long way and seen much, but Joyner didn’t dream of a political life. He thought he was going to teach and coach.
Joyner graduated from the University of Memphis (then Memphis State University) in 1972 and took his first job at Sherwood Junior High in East Memphis. “I had a degree in biology so I taught an advanced group of kids, and they were as smart as they could be,” he says. But there was more to teaching than just inspiring students. With a city teacher’s salary of $7,200 per year and the need to have a part-time job to support a family,
Joyner searched elsewhere for his professional future, but his love of education would continue.
Looking back on the days before the shift to municipal school districts such as Collierville and Germantown, Joyner states, “We had great Shelby County Schools. When Memphis surrendered their charter, and it all went under Shelby County, we were happy with the county schools, other than the fact that we didn’t have control over them. That’s when we started talking about municipal schools.”
Joyner remembers those early days. “I was involved in every aspect: the planning, educating the community on the process, and working with the state legislature.” His and others’ hard work resulted in the creation of the Collierville Schools, the election of a school board, and the hiring of a superintendent. It has resulted in a school district recognized across the state for its excellence.
Joyner sees good things ahead for Collierville Schools. “We’ll continue to grow. There is so much participation from the parents of our students.” And he points to current additions that have occurred at the high school, now some 3000+ students strong. He knows there’s
additional room for growth and the progressive programs the school has introduced. “I understand welding is one of the most popular classes, even with the girls.”
When we examine the biggest change that Joyner has seen over the years, he admits to being a bit stymied. As a man who rode his bikes down Collierville lanes as a child, who was around when Byhalia Road was the western boundary, and when “bad news beat you home” as a child, he’s witnessed a world of change in his hometown. “I’ve seen so much, it’s hard to pinpoint particular highlights.”
He smiles at an instance from several years ago. “I remember one evening in a planning commission meeting when we were talking about Schilling Farms and the surrounding area. Winchester Road at the time stopped at Houston Levee and then there was a hairpin turn that took it straight to Poplar. They were talking about completing Winchester, and I said, ‘They’re never going to complete Winchester. That’s not going to happen!’” Oops.
It’s easy to understand just how difficult it might be for Mayor Joyner or any long-time resident of Collierville to fully digest the massive changes the Town has undergone. Joyner looks at the growth of the Town’s
population and notes, “In 1960, when I was 10, the population was a little over 2,000.” He continues, “The Town has grown an average of 7,000 people on the census every decade.” By December of 2023, the population hit about 53,000. Joyner recalls the major development growth toward the turn of the last century. “Between 1990 to 2000, development in Collierville was growing at a record pace.”
With a projection of Collierville population in 2040 at 65,371, there’s always the question of how much growth can be accommodated. “Our current growth rate is going to be a real challenge. We’re going to reach a point where our growth will stress the capacity of infrastructure, especially sewer. That’s where good planning and reinvesting in infrastructure will be critical.” The Mayor goes on to be cautiously optimistic about new population and business growth. “I think there will be a time in our future when leadership will have to make some tough choices about how much growth is sustainable.”
While there are issues facing some potential areas of development, Joyner admits that the current economy presents a problem for some developers. “There’s a lot of approved building out there right now, but with inflation, some development is on hold.” He adds, “We’ve
got a lot of reserve areas that we had planned on annexing, but the laws have changed.” That has made it more difficult to add areas at will. He adds positively, “We still have ample room to grow,” citing the great potential of the south side of the Town.
According to the Mayor, the biggest issue facing all aspects of Collierville is solid leadership and planning. “The big challenge is always going to be having good leadership, because you can get off track in a hurry with people in place who don’t make good decisions, and it doesn’t take long to do. Somebody else said it, but I like it: “‘We’re one generation away from collapse.’”
But the Mayor is not a doomsayer. He knows that good management and leadership require proactive planning.
“As long as I’ve been involved, we’ve tried to do things by a plan, and that’s going back to ’87,” he says. “You’ve got a plan and you’ve got to work your plan. Of course, time changes things, so you have to adjust and adapt.”
The Mayor adds, “Since I’ve been on the board, James Lewellen [former Town Administrator] did a great job. We have a comprehensive plan that identifies key timelines and the strategies to address those critical junctures. We are fortunate that we’ve had some sound leadership for many years. What you see today in Collierville is the product of generations of good leaders who were good stewards of our community.”
Considering what’s next for the Town, Mayor Joyner comments with a smile on his lips but determination in his voice, “Our biggest leadership challenge is ‘Don’t mess it up,” while noting finally, “As long as we take care of what we’ve got right now, Collierville’s always going to be a fantastic place to live.” ■

N IRON HORSE WONDER HORSE & BEYOND FROM TO
BY ASHLEY CARVER
Ceither time nor great cities stand still. Since the iron horse came to Collierville in 1852 to the production of the Wonder Horse that was shipped around the world in the 1950s, Collierville has always championed progress and innovation.
During the 1990s, Mayor of Collierville Herman Wright Cox (1975-1999) advocated for the redevelopment of Town Square Park, which today is collectively thought of as the heart of the community and a driving tourist attraction. In addition to beautification initiatives, efforts to reenergize the economic vitality of Town Square included passing new Town ordinances and acquiring character- defining objects like the historic railcars, iconic British phone booth, and double- decker bus. These efforts jumpstarted Collierville’s tourism program and set the course for future destination management.
Today, Town Square Park welcomes over 175,000 visitors annually, 20% living 50 miles or more away. Growing Collierville’s tourism program for the future involves learning about our visitors’ demographics and preferences, but perhaps more importantly, learning how to tell Collierville’s unique story in authentic and immersive ways.
One hundred and seventy-five thousand chances to make first impressions, reinforce our values, and deliver memorable experiences. Tools such as Placer. ai, a mobile data analytics platform, in-person and online surveys, and informal conversations with guests provide insight into who visits Collierville and their travel motivations. Learning why people visit help staff maximize marketing dollars and improve services.

Growing tourism in Collierville is focused on storytelling through experiences that leave a lasting impression.
EDUCATE THE VISITOR
Programs and exhibitions at the Morton Museum of Collierville allow residents and visitors to deepen their understanding of Collierville and create powerful memories that can last a lifetime. Located at the gateway to Town Square, the Museum features multiple rotating exhibitions a year and free programming for all ages, making it the perfect starting point for any visitor to Collierville.
TELL A STORY
Steam engine Frisco 1351, the caboose, and the executive train car allow visitors to explore the history of Collierville with their imagination. An estimated 7,500 people climb aboard each year and step back in time to travel in the 1940s executive train car or feel the rumble of a passing freight car while in the cab of Frisco 135. Efforts are underway to enhance the executive train car experience with interior renovations and improved historical interpretation in 2024.
EXPERIENCE THE BRAND
Special events are one of the most important vehicles we have for sharing the Collierville experience. From Fair on the Square each May and Main Street Collierville’s Summer Concert Series to Christmas in Collierville activities, these immersive experiences enable visitors to connect with Collierville and foster a sense of wonder and excitement.
In 2024 and beyond, residents and guests can expect more live music performances in Town Square Park, among other venues. A new amphitheater is under construction in Hinton Park and a Cultural Arts Coordinator within the Parks Department is planning regular performances in Town Parks and other underutilized facilities. For over 150 years, music has been building community in Collierville. Drop by Town Square Park on Friday evenings, from March through October, and experience Collierville’s Bluegrass Jam. For over 20 years, musicians from across West Tennessee and North Mississippi have come together along with friends, family, and strangers to play music and experience the transformative power of live bluegrass, folk, and traditional music.
Residents and visitors can expect more music, history, and immersive experiences to connect with Collierville in the future. These efforts will complement the shops, restaurants, and Rockwellian green space for which Collierville is regionally recognized.

LIMITLESS: GROWTH & POTENTIAL FOR THE
TOWN OF COLLIERVILLE
BY CATHERINE EAKIN & DAVID TANKERSLEY
CFamily is the name of the game for three local developers and real estate professionals: Allen Green of John Green Realtors, Karen and Reggie Garner, Jr. of Magnolia Homes, and Gary Thompson of Boyle Investment Company. They all work for companies that see employees and clients as part of their extended family, and they understand that families are the fabric of strong communities. It’s what Collierville is all about. From a best-in-class school system, notable public safety services, and a deep well of amenities like parks, a modern hospital, plentiful restaurants and shopping, families have always been an inherent part of the Collierville story.
Nothing makes Karen Garner happier than helping families find their forever home. Along with her son and business partner, Reggie, Jr., Karen and Magnolia Homes offer a variety of options with timeless “custom-build” homes. This mother-and-son duo understand the value of Collierville from a residential developer’s perspective. Beginning her company as a single mom in 1987 when home development was still very much a “man’s world,” Karen understood the needs of potential homeowners, and she was determined to meet those needs. She’s proven herself through the years, and now son Reggie, Jr., has joined the mission. He jokes when he says that he joined the business as a child, but, according to mom, his addition “brings Magnolia Homes to a new level.”
With the growth of custom residential homes on the rise in a competitive market, it’s vital to “have home sites on your books,” Karen comments. It’s a notable challenge for Magnolia Homes. “We are always looking for land,” she continues. “We always want our homeowners to be happy and to keep the Magnolia Homes name associated with ‘everything positive.’”
Magnolia Homes opened their dream design studio in 2020, which houses the company’s offices and provides clients a chance to see and touch the materials to be used in their homes. This new space reflects the company’s desire to establish loyalty with their customers and to address specific requirements of potential homeowners. It also serves as a reminder of the investment that Magnolia Homes has in Collierville.
Allen Green of John Green Realtors offers another important voice when it comes to an evaluation of residential real estate trends within the community. The Green name is a long-respected one in Collierville real estate circles. John Green, Allen’s father, opened his real estate business on the Town Square in 1976, after a career as a chemical engineer. “At that time, Collierville wasn’t very big,” remembers Allen, but his dad understood the appeal and potential of the small town. Even though Allen earned a real estate license after graduating from high school, he didn’t join the real estate firm until 1995, after several years as a pilot. Allen has
REGGIE JR. > & KAREN GARNER
learned a lot over the years, both from his dad and from his own experiences in real estate. His insights on Collierville’s growth and future bear weight.
Even though the firm is nestled on a corner of the historic Town Square - complete with shops, restaurants, and professional offices - the Square’s own role in housing developments has been rare, since historic guidelines have restricted some types of construction. “We are seeing a lot of new development close to the high school,” Allen Green notes, “but I also think you will see some infill development around the Town Square.”
Allen Green and his brother Michael have proposed a new development off the Town Square. Grove Square is a 32-lot development with six attached homes and 26 brownstones. These homes will cater to families that are looking to downsize, while taking advantage of proximity to the Square. Residents will be able to walk to dinner, the office, or multiple shopping options. Col lierville’s charm will be right outside their front steps.
Green sees interest in mixed-use development in the Town. “I think you will start to see more requests to do mixed-use developments that combine residential and retail,” he says. “It just works economically and it’s going back to our roots in residential development.”
On the commercial side of development, the increased mixed-use construction in the Schilling Farms area is both impressive and encouraging. For an expert perspective on this development, look no further than Gary Thompson of Boyle Investment Company. After obtaining his degree in landscape architecture and a brief period of consulting roles. Thompson started full-time with Boyle in 1995. It’s been a successful relationship ever since.
Boyle is proud of the reputation they’ve built as one of the premier commercial and residential development firms in the area. They consistently look to construct long-lasting buildings for their clients and in the process establish sound business relationships. Their motto, “Building Communities since 1933” is fitting.
Thompson embraces the idea of building com
munities. He and Boyle have been involved in the development of Schilling Farms since the early 1990s. Thompson adds, “It was a period that saw Collierville become one of the fastest-growing communities in Tennessee.” The steady growth of the area has been great for Boyle and the diverse group of companies that are now located at Schilling Farms. Mueller Industries has found a home there, as has IMC Logistics, who moved their world headquarters there in 2022. SOB [South of
Beale Restaurant], Rotolos, and Crumbl Cookies are all part of their new development at Poplar and Schilling Farms. Boyle continues to pursue new home, dining and shopping sites within Schilling Farms.
“Mixed-use developments permit us to do some really cool stuff that is supported by this walkable community,” Thompson says. “You can pick up your kid from daycare and run them across the street to the orthodontist, then return them to daycare or take them home. It’s sort of a one-stop shop. It functions really, really, well.” It’s an ideal layout for families, having most amenities located within a quick drive or comfortable walk, and it’s a concept that will find an expanded use in Collierville.
Speaking of the allure of Collierville, Karen Garner and Magnolia Homes Marketing Director Kaitlyn Stafford agree that “Everything you need is right here, and Collierville still has that small-town feel.” They add that successful Collierville businesses have served as a magnet to help bring other businesses to the area. As
Collierville expands its business foundation, that positive change can help define Collierville’s future, while still maintaining important partnerships with the larger metro area. “When people transfer here,” Allen Green says, “they have these preconceived notions about the Memphis area. But when they get to Collierville, they’re like ‘Wow, this is one of the nicest places I’ve ever been to.’” The Town offers most of the necessities found in a larger city without some of the typical hassles.
Smart growth demands patience and knowledge. Allen gives credit to the Town government. “The Town has done a good job of guaranteeing that growth is controlled and planned. Collierville has certainly benefited from this approach.” It seems that most agree that such a direction, while slow at times, allows for the Town to be specific about its growth.
Karen Garner: “We feel that Collierville does an excellent job in stewarding development that is in good taste and that will not overwhelm existing infrastruc-
ture or the community long-term.” This process is also highlighted by Boyle’s Gary Thompson when it comes to com mercial sites. “I think the process has yielded great results for the Town of Col lierville. That’s the reason why it’s top of the market.”
The battle between small-town charm and rapid expansion is ever-present. Karen Garner understands one of the selling points of Collierville. “Collierville prides itself on being a close-knit com munity with a distinct identity.”
Again, Boyle’s Gary Thompson: “I think it’s hard to balance tradition and inno vation, but Collierville has grown and innovated. It’s that vision that’s helped the Town be efficient in its growth.” He gives much credit to those Town officials in the early part of Collierville’s growth: former Mayor Herman Cox [who coined the term “Town of Collierville,” avoid ing the word “city” for his charming community]; former Economic Develop ment Director John Duncan, and former Town Administrator James Lewellen. He points to them as leaders who put effec tive measures in place to control growth while staying on the leading edge of nec essary change. Thompson goes on to give credit to current Town Administra tor Molly Mehner for maintaining those practices. Thompson adds, “I’ve been quite impressed with Mehner.” She’s not overwhelmed by the multitude of factors she faces. “She’s come in with grace… and is very poised as she’s stepped right into the job,” Thompson adds.
Allen Green cites the realtor’s motto: “Location, location, location. Poplar Avenue, Highways 385, 269, 72 and 57
all converge in our Town,” he notes, and these highways lead to larger interstates like I-40 and I-240. “You can get to Down town Memphis quicker than you can get
Gary Thompson directs the conver sation to what he considers the most important road for Collierville. “Poplar is our marquee road. It runs from the Shelby-Fayette County line all the way to the Mississippi River. It’s there for the people of Collierville.” He considers Poplar Avenue’s value to the Town and can’t overstate its importance, suggest ing that Poplar will continue to anchor most development in the area, from Wolf River to 385 and everything in between. Allen Green’s father John, the founder of the eponymous real estate firm, says with a smile, “Poplar is like a rainbow that runs all the way through Memphis. The pot of gold at the end is
Collierville.”
For the Garners, the Greens and Gary Thompson, Collierville has all the assets and amenities that point to a bright future. “It’s all about finding the sweet spot when it comes to development,” suggests Karen Garner. Thompson adds matter-of-factly, “Collierville has grown for the better.” Ultimately, the overall success will come from a concerted effort from the Town, informed developers and the entire community. While there may always be those skeptical of Collierville’s boom and continued expansion, Allen Green doesn’t consider that a problem. In fact, “I’m very bullish on the potential of Collierville moving forward. I think Collierville’s best years are ahead of us.” ■■■ to

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX
BY DAVID TANKERSLEY
CAs Jessica White begins telling the story of the Mid-South Gifted Academy of Collierville, a joyful group of young children is playing in a park across the street. White explains the phenomenal growth the school has had in its short lifespan, from 17 students to 121 in just six years. There are more children in that playground than there were in the whole school at its inception.
This upstate New Yorker turned Southerner never had any doubt of what she wanted to do and what she would eventually accomplish. “I had to open the school,”
< JESSICA WHITE
she states. White gathered 17 years of teaching experience in various settings with Memphis City Schools and the Germantown Schools before realizing her dream. When finding a space became difficult, Germantown Methodist Church stepped up to offer some unused areas at the church.
The Gifted Academy was originally a micro-school and had only 17 students that first day at the church. Good fortune came knocking and their dream building at the corner of South and Center became available. It housed their entire student body, and a few years later, in October 2023, they were able to open a new building across the street to accommodate their upper-level students. Designed by Spirit Architects, the building is a seamless addition to the neighborhood and is reminiscent of the red-brick school buildings of the early to mid-20th century.
Initially, White had doubts about locating in Collierville. “It was bold to open a school here,” she says. “People in Collierville don’t plan to go to private school.” Collierville is well-known for the quality of their public schools, but White was experienced with high-quality schools and working with gifted students in her previous teaching

experience. She knew that gifted students often have trouble fitting into a standard school model, no matter how good the school may be by traditional standards.
Providing a challenge to gifted students is a must, she notes. “We are failing these kids. They are the kids who will be the leaders, the scientists. They are the ones that question the status quo.” White continues, “Twenty percent of gifted students drop out of high school,” she says. “They don’t see the value.” Commenting on the standard educational model, it sometimes doesn’t add enough worth or challenge to gifted students. That’s where the Gifted Academy can fill the void, she adds. “They are the precocious ones,” who require a very distinct curriculum that encourages their inquisitive nature.
From the earliest grades to their upper-division School of Innovation and Design, the Mid-South Gifted Academy wants to meet the needs of the gifted student. While a foundation of independence is laid at the primary grade levels, upper grades meet the future head-on.
“We understand the needs of the future and the workforce. I mean what we can understand,” she says. “Nobody has a crystal ball. What we do know is that AI turned the world around. Our students’ lives are going to look very different. We need them to think critically. Our students are innovators, world changers.”
Take a leisurely stroll through the upper-grade classrooms and it’s easy to see how this school develops more than just knowledge and critical thinking. “We are also big on core values,” White says. Teamwork and connection between students are evident as small groups
work together on math problems or blend voices, as a choral group practices for an upcoming program.
Identifying gifted learners is not as difficult as it may seem. While there are tests to measure learning ability and I.Q.’s, White confesses that she and her team have learned to see telltale signs of talented learners within a short time. It’s not just about intellect. It’s about hard work.
“We believe in the entrepreneurial spirit,” adding that the school itself is a for-profit organization, where “you can get these kids to believe in their own abilities, to make something with their own hands and sell it to a stranger.” To this end, Mid-South Gifted Academy hosts an annual business fare for young entrepreneurs.
Says White, “We all just want our kids to grow up to be who they were meant to be. These kids, through no fault of their own, were born a little different. They need a place where they can grow.”
When she considers her family and the town, she sees good things coming. “We love Collierville. The parks are one of our greatest features. We need to make that part of the future growth of Collierville.”
White sees even greater potential for the community, “if we have open-minded and creative people who can consider all ideas and really think about the best interests for the future and not just what we’ve always been. We need to think about where we’re going. We need to be forward thinking. If we have those open-minded individuals at decision-making levels, then we’re in good shape. The future is bright.” ■

M EAGER FOR A CHALLENGE
Conique Benson’s journey to Collierville was a roundabout path of professional curves, hills and valleys. It was nothing this woman couldn’t handle, and, in fact, the winding road offered a valuable education in how to meet new challenges head-on.
The Senior Supply Chain Manager at Carrier Corporation grew up in Alexander City, Alabama, a small town somewhere east of and relatively close to both Montgomery and Birmingham. She graduated a proud Tiger from Auburn University.
After a brief stint in the financial sector, Benson realized that she wanted a different challenge down a different path, but the 2008 recession created roadblocks and made it difficult to find any job, let alone a new professional path. However, she was determined, and with perseverance and guidance from a friend, she found herself in Cincinnati, working for Toyota. After five years in the Queen City, the automaker sent Benson and her team to Ann Arbor, Michigan. And Michigan is cold! Benson knew it was time to consider a change. “I wanted to come back…to friends, to my roots and to my family.” Research led her to FedEx, where an interview with the global shipping giant left her feeling
positive - about work and about the location. “I came to Collierville and just drove around. You could see the sense of community.” As someone who loves gardening, she found the green spaces and the natural beauty of the area attractive. “There was something about the atmosphere in Collierville,” she recalls.
After five years with FedEx, a new challenge presented itself: Collierville’s Carrier Corporation, a leader in the HVAC industry. “Carrier has been in the Collierville community for decades now – since the 1970s” she says, and she knows the win-win relationship between the Town and Carrier. Benson offers two main reasons for the successful relationship. “We’re nicely located and
can attract talent from North Mississippi, the Memphis area, and farther east into Tennessee. Our talent pool is fantastic.”
Second, she spotlights the positive role that community involvement plays with businesses in the area, and commitment to community is vital for Carrier’s success. “We’re engaged, giving back to the community. It’s an opportunity for us to continue to grow as the community grows.”
Benson’s professional track record speaks for itself –major companies with outstanding reputations. Benson is driven by challenge. Taking advice from a mentor years ago, Benson began to ask herself important questions that would drive her career trajectory. “What do I want to achieve professionally, instead of just showing up to work every day and hoping it works out?”
Cultivating intention with every career opportunity has been key. She doesn’t remain complacent in the evolving world of supply-chain management, and she’s always ready to learn. With each job, with each new challenge, new opportunities have arisen. “My career has always been in supply chain, but you learn different roles within companies.” She cites her move from FedEx to Carrier as “targeting areas…that expanded my portfolio.” Achieving success in the ever-changing world of supply chain management is fraught with challenges and requires constant adaptation. Benson wouldn’t have it any other way: Adapt or get left behind.
When she turns her attention to the future of Collierville, the ability to adapt continues to occupy first place. “As the community continues to grow, it doesn’t have to lose its culture. Sometimes when areas begin to expand, they move away from their innate attributes that create [that culture]. As Collierville continues to expand, you don’t want to lose that sense of community.”
Benson is also keen to focus on the role that future generations will assume when fostering the Town’s culture. “The way the community rallies around the youth is important. Those are the folks that will run the city in years to come.”
Most important for Benson, the future is about relationships and connections between people. “I think connections between human beings are the threads that will keep the community together and anchor us during this growth season [Collierville’s expansion].” She adds that such human connections will serve the town “both short-term and into the future.” ■

SERVING UP THE FUTURE
BY CATHERINE EAKIN
BRITTANY & ED > CABIGAO
CSince meeting as waitstaff at P.F. Chang’s in 2006, Brittany and Ed Cabigao knew that the restaurant business was part of their future.
Fast forward to 2024, and they are the owners and operators of seven local restaurants, including two in the Collierville area: Bangkok Alley and South of BealeCollierville, or SOB. The Thai favorite is the sole location of the popular restaurant while the upscale eatery is the third SOB location, all owned by the Cabigaos. “It’s nice that SOB and Bangkok Alley are so different, it’s not that we’re competing. It’s just a nice complement,” Ed says. Their first venture into the restaurant landscape was the first SOB location in downtown Memphis in 2009.
“The first two or three years was the school of hard knocks for us. A lot of learning on the fly,” Ed says. This period helped Brittany and Ed learn what they didn’t know and prepared them for future endeavors. In 2016, they bought into Interim, a struggling local restaurant, and tried various options to see what would work.
But things changed a few years later in 2020. “During that Covid time, Interim had become all ours, and we
were able to make more definitive decisions about it,” Brittany explains. The pandemic offered a chance for the Cabigaos to serve SOB food via carryout to the local area with great success. Then a combination of two important factors helped them set their sights on a third SOB location.
With the pandemic starting to wane in 2022, a local broker friend, Jonathan Aur of Jones Aur, approached them about some new land in the expanding Schilling Farms. Ed knew that this was something to consider. “Both SOBs were doing well and we knew we wanted to keep expanding, really due to risk mitigation.” While hesitant due to their current location in Memphis, both personally and professionally, Ed knew the potential was there. “We didn’t really know that much about
WE WERE DELIGHTFULLY SURPRISED BY HOW BUSY ALL THE RESTAURANTS WERE AND THE DEMAND FOR RESTAURANTS.”
Collierville, but thanks to him [Aur] being persistent, we decided to look at the area for a one-to-two week period during the Summer of 2022.”
Brittany and Ed did some research by visiting several local restaurants. “We were delightfully surprised by how busy all the restaurants were and the demand for restaurants,” Ed says. The Cabigaos signed the lease in October 2022 for SOB-Collierville, and the restaurant officially opened a year later in October 2023. The first few months were a “crazy time,” but opening with a consistent staff and management team, they knew how to run the new SOB effectively from the start.
The patio, higher-end bourbon at the bar, and a very east-of-Memphis clientele are all things that separate this Collierville location from the other two SOBs. While still offering the same menu, a similar atmosphere, and exceptional service, SOB-Collierville lends itself well to a consistently great experience one finds in the other Cabigao restaurants.
“The vibe of that development [Schilling Farms] fits in line with exactly with what we wanted SOB to be like as well.” The diversity of population in Collierville is something that’s been a benefit for SOB and the larger restaurant industry. “Collierville has a lot of transplants, a lot of people who are not from Memphis but come from other metropolitan parts of the country,” Ed notes. These citizens are accustomed to a local food scene that a larger city tends to offer. “The clientele in Collierville is really chill and more forgiving,” especially
during those first few months of opening, both Ed and Brittany mention. This laid-back attitude was observed and appreciated by staff.
Limited parking and construction will continue to be minor hiccups while things are underway, as with any new development. It is a good sign though, for existing business. “We’re really excited when all of that’s complete,” Ed says. Finding employees for the restaurant industry within the town limits has also been a small challenge. “There just isn’t a lot of that labor pool in the Collierville area.” They’ve worked around this by hiring outside labor with increased wage and it’s been very successful.
Oversaturation of new restaurants in the area is a longer-term challenge for the industry. For now, SOB is a unique find, which is probably a large reason why the Collierville location is the strongest of three restaurant’s locations.
“I think the reason why Collierville is so much more successful than East is because in East Memphis there’s so much variety. So, does Collierville get that way eventually?” both Ed and Brittany ask. While the oversaturation of the town’s restaurant market is something to be thinking about, that growth is “several years in the future.”
As for the immediate outlook of SOB-Collierville and Bangkok Alley, it’s very bright according to the Cabigaos. “The restaurant scene in Collierville will only get better,” Ed says. ■

< MACK WEAVER
ork barbecue is a part of our regional culture, and it’s no wonder that every year thousands of people swarm to the city from spots around the globe to glory in all that is barbecue. For close to 50 years, the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest has brought attention to this swell of humanity witnessing mouth-watering food and pure fun of celebrating something so dear to our hearts. Point of fact, the barbecue contest is but one part of Memphis in May, the month-long party that celebrates friendship across the globe. The 2024 festival celebrated France through Memphis in May’s grateful partnership with the Greater Memphis Chamber.
Collierville resident Mack Weaver sits at the helm of Memphis in May International Festival, having been selected in January 2024 to take the reins as President
and CEO from a retiring Jim Holt, who was in those roles for over 25 years. Weaver remembers the day he was approached by Holt about coming to work for Memphis in May. “I was working at The Peabody, and I liked the work. I was their Audit Manager and had won several awards there. I was 29 with one child.” He continues, “It was 1999 and Jim told me that Memphis in May was in financial peril. He said, ‘If we can’t turn this thing around this year….’” Fate called and Weaver accepted the challenge, becoming the organization’s Chief Financial Officer. Risk accepted.
Obstacles are persistent for Memphis in May, but a strong foundation runs throughout the organization’s history. It wasn’t long into his tenure that Weaver witnessed the real power behind this non-profit: volunteers. “I had never experienced volunteerism at that level,” he says. “Not being paid and working those kinds of hours!”
As their website states, Memphis in May uses “800 volunteers from across the state of Tennessee and beyond who come together to help put on the world-class events.” Additionally, “The Memphis in May International Festival Volunteer Program … has been awarded the Gold Pinnacle for Best Volunteer Program from the International Festival Events Association six times.”
Originally from Memphis, Weaver graduated from Northside High School and South Carolina State University, where he earned a B.S. in mathematics. While in college he proved his drive and leadership qualities on the football field, garnering All-American honors as a defensive back. Stepping into the professional ranks, he continued to attract honors and recognition for his leadership skills. Recognized by the Memphis Business Journal in 2002 as one of their “Top 40 Under 40” honorees, Weaver is a graduate of the Leadership Memphis Class of 2006, and a two-time CFO of the Year finalist.
For some, this year might have presented too great a challenge, with the retirement of Jim Holt, the signa-
ture Beale Street Music Festival being put on hold for a year due to issues regarding Tom Lee Park and the River Parks Partnership, and the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest leaving the riverbanks as well for Liberty Park at the old Fairgrounds. Weaver has learned how to face challenges from his first days with the organization. Adapting is second nature, and there was never a doubt in Weaver’s mind about Memphis in May.
“I know what the organization means to this city,” he states matter-of-factly. He adds, “I know that our biggest challenge is navigating the future. We want to make sure to stay true to who we are.” Accepting the position of CEO, Weaver noted, “I look forward to guiding the festival into the next chapter. We are in good shape financially, have a respected and world-renowned brand, experienced team, and dedicated volunteers.”
What’s the adage about finding a busy man if you want to get things done? Just point to Mack Weaver. He knows what it means to volunteer, and he knows how to get things done. He’s served as treasurer and on the board of directors at Hattiloo Theatre, the 2022-2023 board chairman at the Memphis Rock-N-Soul Museum; a board member of Memphis Tourism, and continues to be an active member of the Greater Community Temple Deacon Board. He’s passionate and dedicated to organizations he feels strongly about, and it’s no wonder he offers a great example to the Memphis in May volunteers.
From their Front Street address, Weaver and his dedicated team look out onto the city’s future every day, as the new Memphis Art Museum begins to rise at the banks of the Mississippi. Weaver and staff live the future. “We are going to do what we do best, just as we have for the past 46 years.”
And from the porch of his Collierville home, where he and his family have lived for 12 years, Weaver enjoys the peace and quiet. “My wife and I appreciate the small-town feel. No matter what the future brings for Collierville, I hope we never lose that small-town atmosphere. I hope we continue to do what we do best.” ■

> PICKLER
CCollierville had always been on Katie Pickler’s radar. Growing up in Germantown and attending Houston High School, Pickler knew all about that beautiful small Town just east down Poplar. She knew Collierville had small town charm and a beautiful town square. Her dad, David Pickler, also recognized the charm, but, just as important, he recognized just how fast Collierville was expanding and the opportunities that expansion could offer. In 2005, David Pickler opened Pickler Companies in Collierville.
Katie remembers, “Collierville looked a little different than it does today, but it really was a great place for him [her father] to put his roots down and start a new chapter in his life.” All three entities of the Pickler Companies – Pickler Law Firm, Pickler Wealth Advisors, and Pickler Accounting – found their home. It was a perfect spot to offer a one-stop shop for the most important personal matters: legal and financial, and the firm’s current location on Halle Park Circle was a prime location for accessibility to clients all over the area, as well as offering room to grow.
Katie Pickler’s own professional story began with a degree from Middle Tennessee State University in organizational communications in 2012, and a job with the nonprofit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation [JDRF]. It was there that she gained firsthand knowledge of philanthropy in Collierville as well as the larger business community.
“I really got to see the different businesses and learned how I could engage them” in the efforts of JDRF. Such experience helped prepare her for a future with Pickler Companies. When her dad approached her about joining the family business in 2018, she had already learned the importance of keeping things in perspective. “From day one of working in the for-profit world, I had the same feeling I had when I worked for a non-profit. Each day I’m making a difference.” This time, it was making a difference for clients’ financial and legal well-being.
Katie Pickler is proud of the “family business” approach the company has adopted. The Pickler “family” encompasses both employees and clients. She is equally proud of the way their company approaches

balance and diversity when it comes to the Pickler family. “We have a diverse group of individuals who are employees. But we also have great diversity with our clients. People feel like they are part of the family.”
Her experience with JDRF honed her ability to recognize the importance of philanthropic engagement within the community, and Pickler Companies pride themselves on their various partnerships throughout Collierville, and, in some cases, across the country. When it comes to philanthropic efforts, she notes, “Getting involved in our community allows us to get to know what is needed and where it’s needed.”
Katie Pickler is a forward thinker, always investigating and adopting new ways of communicating with clients. While she embraces new technologies, she is also aware that new technologies are not always the best or simplest way to communicate with clients. “We want our clients to know that they are our top priority…
People have my and David’s cell phone numbers.” It’s the direct connection to the personal side of the Pickler Companies that can’t be replaced by any manner of new technology. It’s the close relationship with clients that they treasure.
On a personal note, she and her husband moved to Collierville after their wedding in 2019, when they went looking for a starter home and a place for a growing family. She is proud to call the Town of Collierville home both personally and professionally.
Katie Pickler’s future and the future of the Pickler Companies are deeply connected to the growth of the Town of Collierville. “We love the people and the leadership in the town.” Opening Pickler Companies Event Center in August 2023 in Halle Park Professional Complex cemented that commitment to the Town.
There’s a smile when she says, “We’re a national firm with small-town values. It’s Wall Street to Main Street.” ■

HEAD FUTURE , HEART PAST
IN THE IN THE
BY DAVID TANKERSLEY
HALEY > RODGERS
CHaley Rodgers went to the University of Tennessee Knoxville as an undergraduate with every intention of becoming an art teacher, following in the footsteps of her mom and older sister. Then the pesky word “kinesiology” jumped in front of her at registration. Curiosity took over, and just like that, a new career path was created for the former Collierville High student.
Kinesiology, or the scientific study of human body movement, offered an exciting new challenge. Haley admits that even as she began this new step, she had no idea how lucky she was, and just how hard it is to find such a department in the region, let alone in her home state.
“I discovered later that a degree in kinesiology is hard to find.” Advancing through her four undergraduate years, Haley’s program of study provided the necessary background to what has become her chosen career. Today, Haley is moving into her second year in physical therapy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC).
Haley confesses her natural love of the Memphis area and specifically her hometown of Collierville. When pressed about specific memories and the aspects of Collierville that she finds most endearing, the kinesiology student doesn’t have to work her imagination.
“I think my personal favorite part of Collierville is the lighting of the Christmas tree in the Town Square.
I started going to that with my mom and my best friend and it became a tradition.”
And when Haley talks of her youthful years in Collierville, she can’t help but point out her memories of childhood friends and idyllic days. “It was really special. A lot of my friends and I attended school all the way through, from pre-school to graduation from Collierville High School. Just about everyone has stayed in touch. It is such a tight-knit group.”
She hasn’t strolled the CHS halls since graduating in 2019, but the fondness of her years there and the bonds she made with other students have stayed with her, as have the many opportunities the school offered. Haley was an active athlete in her middle school years, but she put that aside when entering high school and committed herself to the Student Government Association.
“I was on the dance team and played lacrosse in middle school, but when I got to high school, I decided to take some time off. I became actively involved in the Student Government Association. I loved it. Everybody’s really involved.” Haley remembers the exciting responsibility she was awarded for conducting tours of the school for visitors.
Looking to the future, Haley has another two years of demanding study ahead of her before moving into the workforce but has plenty of options where she might
want to work. “I’m definitely trying to keep an open mind. I worked as an undergraduate in an outpatient clinic” that had a good percentage of active and athletic clients, she remembers. “I fell in love with that, and I loved going to work.”
As for where her future will take her, no doubt she’ll have many opportunities. “I love Collierville and it will always be home,” and then she adds, “but I did fall in love with East Tennessee.”
Haley has a deep attachment to the town, and she appreciates how Collierville has retained the smalltown flavor while growing in many ways. “The town leaders have done such a good job,” she says. “The only thing I look at is how we will continue to grow.”
As for her alma mater, Collierville High School: “I love how much they’ve progressed — all the changes they’ve made to the campus, and all of the new vocational programs. There are so many varieties of opportunities.”
She does muse over the direction of her hometown and sometimes wishes for more prospects for young people to connect. “At times, I wish there were more opportunities for 20-somethings,” she says. “I struggle at times finding places to connect with others my age.”
The future is wide open for Haley Rodgers, and she’ll find her place. But wherever that is, her heart will always find a home in Collierville. ■
