A Bridge to the Future

CHECKING IN WITH

Mayor Musselwhite

In the past year, what are some of the achievements and advancements that indicate Southaven’s continued growth as a major city in the state of Mississippi?

Our economy continues to excel with economic developments either completed during the last year or pending valued at about 1.4 billion dollars! We have solid economic demand throughout our city, with the highest investments coming to the Snowden District, which totals over $1 billion alone. Most of this is commercial development, but we still have a solid mix of residential growth as well. These are incredible numbers never achieved before in our city, signaling a very elite status for any Mississippi city. Aggressive infrastructure improvement continues to handle current growth and prepare for future growth, with the largest being the Getwell Road widening project. Others pending are the Nail Road extension between Getwell and Tchulahoma, Snowden Lane widening, and numerous intersectionwidening and signal-addition projects.

People living in and those considering a new home location always look at public safety among reasons to relocate to or to stay where they are. What has Southaven done in the past year to ensure the city is a safe place to live?

This is the top priority for our city, with a constant re-evaluation plan by the police and fire administrations and my office. Fire Station #5 will be completed in late ‘24, improving our emergency services in this area of significant growth. With growth also come crime challenges, and we

have been able to handle these challenges very well. As simple as it may sound, it starts with communication and enforcement of a zerotolerance crime policy. We’ve made it clear and have proven that we will enforce every law in our city, and this message travels quickly. We’ve invested in our Police operation tremendously, with a 70% total budget increase during the last five years. Much of this is with salary increases to assist with our aggressive officer expansion program. We’ve expanded our force by 38% during the last five years, which is unheard of in today’s climate for this career in the United States. We’ve also invested in the most modern technology that has truly changed the capacity of what we can do from a law enforcement perspective. It’s amazing what’s available now, and we will continue to multiply our hands, eyes, and ears to keep Southaven a great place to live, work, and visit.

A lot of emphasis has been placed on improving city parks and recreational areas, with that expected to continue. What has Southaven done, and what does it plan to do for parks and recreation in the coming year?

The City has a four-year parks enhancement plan that coincides with the tourism tax revenue extension. Our 2022-2026 plan has included a massive neighborhood parks project that added walking trails and pavilions in ten parks, with a 10-foot multi-use trail added at Central Park to connect other trails and making the largest pedestrian trail in the City’s history. Tennis expansion is the other larger investment in this plan, with eight new outdoor courts under

construction now to give a total of 20 courts to our tennis center. The Cherry Valley Park renovation will bring a new bike track and skate park along with other plans to beautify and secure this beloved park. New roofs and parking lots at Snowden Grove and Greenbrook Park have also been recently completed.

What other items can we expect to see happen from the city government during the course of 2025?

The ongoing priorities of public safety, infrastructure improvement, parks enhancement, beautification, and economic development will continue to hold the framework for plans in 2025. Beautification projects will specifically be geared towards our West End District in 2025 as we promote the attractiveness and redevelopment here. The City purchased the former Fred’s building on Northwest Drive that will become the new home to our court after beautiful renovations are completed. Landscaping and mural art projects are also planned for the I-55/Stateline area.

You continue dealing for and advocating Southaven to businesses eyeing the city for site location. What are they looking for, and how do you respond to those inquiries?

Private businesses have their specific business models for site selection, so there is a wide array of interests in Southaven. Our primary function is to keep our city attractive and conducive for business so that there is adequate consumer demand for these businesses. Right now, we couldn’t be hotter.

You’re a native of the city you lead, a city with many lifelong residents but also one that attracts people from out of the area to reside. As a native of Southaven, what would you tell newcomers to explain why this is a great place to put down roots?

Because of my history and knowledge of this city, I could sell Southaven to anyone around the globe. We check all the boxes for what people are looking for in a place to call home. Even in today’s crazy world, we have a safe place where crime is controlled in the strongest manner. We are a financially strong, well-managed city. Great neighborhoods, career, church, healthcare, education, shopping, dining, and recreational options abound here with access to an international airport in a key geographical region. Southaven is a big city on its own now, but still has the feel and charm in many ways of the former days of when Southaven was very small.

AND THEIR WARDS

Alderman At Large GEORGE PAYNE

As a lifelong resident of Southaven, I have had the unique privilege of witnessing and contributing to our city’s remarkable evolution from a small Memphis suburb to Mississippi’s third-largest city and a dynamic economic powerhouse. Our city’s growth has been driven by a commitment to highpaying jobs, diverse industries, vibrant tourism, and award-winning parks and amenities. These advancements make Southaven an appealing place for both young families and retirees. My wife, Lori, and I have been deeply rooted in this community, attended school here, and raised our children here. My experiences growing up here, and as an active member of our community, fuels my dedication to ensuring that Southaven continues to thrive and provide a high quality of life for all its residents.

What makes Coffee Central the go-to place to bring coffee and community together?

We feel like coffee is a really great way to bring people together! Who doesn’t have fond memories of sitting around the table with friends and family on vacation, over the holidays, or just to catch up! Having a local place for specialty coffee and great food that offers safe space, gracious service, and a place for people to belong Is foundational to our Coffee Central culture and purpose. We have always felt like being the place that people choose to meet with friends and family or for business opportunities or Bible studies. That’s part of what we’re here for and are the benchmarks of what we do and who we are at Coffee Central. We also love the opportunity to host your special events. Making our space your space for private gatherings, Bible studies, business meetings, connecting with a friend, or just a chance to rest your soul with a book and great cup of coffee is the kind of local landmark we strive to be.

Why is the connection with Ethnos Coffee Roasters so important to Coffee Central?

We acquired Ethnos in October 2023. We always felt that roasting was the next logical step for Coffee Central and had envisioned simply roasting for ourselves. When the previous owner of Ethnos Coffee took a career change that moved him out of state we were allowed the opportunity to acquire the business and develop our own coffee brand as well as work directly with farms and importers for our specialty-grade coffee. This just extended another opportunity for us to build meaningful relationships through coffee, But now, through a wholesale partnership program, by supplying coffee to other local coffee shops, restaurants, grocery stores and even the Memphis Zoo!

We are currently in the process of expanding our capacity to roast by bringing part of Ethnos coffee roasters in-house at our Southaven location. If you love coffee, you’re going to love this! You can come in and see the process from our burlap sacks of imported green coffee, all

the way through the process of how we profile and roast and to your cup! We like to say it’s bringing coffee and those relationships across cultures and around tables, from farm to cup!

How does what customers buy at Coffee Central support specific causes, like the fight against human trafficking?

We are a mission-driven organization. We believe in investing in our community and doing all that we can to make a difference in the lives of others! Whether it’s a big smile and greeting when you come into one of our cafés, giving back to our teachers, or by purchasing our coffee, you help us support organizations that are doing so much good in our community! For example, we have an entire line of coffee that is female through the entire supply chain. Meaning that we, as a 100 percent-owned female roaster, source those origins from female-owned or -operated farms, the coffee is then roasted mostly by our female team. We give a portion of the proceeds back to a ministry, helping women out of addiction and off the streets in Memphis, Tennessee. That organization is Sista 2 Sista. It’s just one of our giveback programs. So when you purchase one of our white bags, with amazing coffee from Brazil, Yunnan China, or Guatemala, you are supporting women in those nations as well as here at home!

Why is it important for Coffee Central to be a part of the Southaven community?

We absolutely love Southaven and the greater Mid-South! From our DC jags to our Southaven chargers, and everything in between we are just delighted to be a place to gather for our community. Southaven has grown tremendously in my lifetime and I have loved watching the development of a really great city while at the same time we somehow still maintain connections in our community and a small-town feel, where places like Coffee Central can be a thriving part of the culture here! We are grateful to be considered DeSoto’s Best Coffee and Small Business of the Year, and our very own Tina Tatum was previously voted Southaven Woman of the Year.

Tell us about your business.

We are a small business that started in my garage about seven years ago. We have grown to support 19 employees and pride ourselves on being familyoriented with a family atmosphere. We initially started in specializing in leak detection on pools and have since branched out to retail, weekly maintenance, repairs, new construction, and remodels. We like to joke and say we do it all at Duvall nowadays. We strive to not be one of the pool companies that will try to oversell and really focus on shooting people straight and getting them what they need instead of a lot of things that they don’t.

What are some of the products and services that Duvall Pool Supplies can provide?

We specialize in leak detection, new construction, retail (free chemical testing, supplies), weekly maintenance, remodel, and servicing equipment pads. Basically, anything to do with a pool.

What are some of the benefits of having a clean and fully functional outdoor pool at home?

In my opinion the greatest benefit is getting to create quality memories with friends and family in the summer. But the list is endless. It’s amazing for exercise and staying active, or just relaxing poolside after a long day. A pool can bring a regular backyard into a complete oasis and transport you to a place where you can unwind.

What makes Southaven a great place for you to do business?

I moved here from Santa Rosa Beach in Florida with the full intention of going back, but I stayed here after getting acclimated to this amazing community with tons of opportunities. You get a sense of community and hospitality here that you don’t quite get in other places. The growth here is amazing and the pool industry is thriving.

Enjoy life in a small town atmosphere while taking advantage of all the amenities offered in larger metropolitan cities. Southaven offers an abundance of recreational and cultural activities, excellent health care, low cost of living, and a mild four-season climate to enjoy outdoor activities year-round. For retirement, nothing tops

Located just a few miles south of the Tennessee line, Southaven is certified by the American Association of Retirement Communities as a qualified Retirement Center.

Arts are Alive in Southaven

The arts community in Southaven is far from a “culture shock,” as four people can attest to. One is a participant in a vibrant theater community, while another connects to the great voice and notes of the local music scene. There’s someone who lights the fire of future filmmakers, while another fills a canvas with vibrant colors. They’re all part of the arts lifestyle living in Southaven. Kylan Owens is a young man who loves the theater and loves to act. Owens recently showcased his acting skills with his role as Ren MacCormack in the Southaven-based DeSoto Family Theatre’s presentation of “Footloose The Musical.”

DeSoto Family Theatre, also known as DFT, presented the musical version of the movie and took it on the road to the nearby Gin at Nesbit. It provided a different flair for local theater that was akin to “theater in the round,” with the audience seated around the actors as the show was presented to sold out audiences every night.

“Theater is such an expressive space to be in,” Owens said. “You can go to a theater to cry, to laugh or be upset, just for the show. All shows bring inclusion and people together, and that’s a good thing.”

For exceptional local family theater, the DeSoto Family Theatre provides a wonderful family experience that has had a significant cultural experience in Southaven since its inception in 2001.

Carl Eldridge is a business owner with a local music store among his interests. Eldridge has been involved in music for several years and his store, Melody Time Music, is a place where you might find aspiring musicians still come to share a song most any time of day.

“There are a lot of good musicians here in DeSoto County and some of them come into our store,” Eldridge said. “I think there’s a lot of guys and women who you would hear and think, ‘why are they not on the big stage?’ Then you find out, there’s a lot of people like that.”

If live music is what you want to check out, Eldridge thinks Southaven is a great place for that. The variety of sound, from country and rock and anything in between, is evident wherever you go.

“There are so many bands that are good and places here don’t have to take a band that’s not good,” Eldridge explains. “There’s a lot to choose from.”

Grove or the Landers Center, to your local grill or pub, know that music in Southaven is alive, well, and sounding good!

Southaven may not be the first place you think of when considering movie capitals, but it may not be too long from now when an award-winning film is produced by someone who went through the Southaven-based DeSoto Arts Institute.

Founded in 2016, the DeSoto Arts Institute, also known as DAI, is dedicated to providing arts education and opportunities for people of all ages, offering classes in areas such as visual arts, music, theater, and film.

“One of our goals is to meet like-minded people who want to make films and get them plugged in here,” said founder Robb Smith, also known as Robb Rokk. “We’re seeing some success and more people are recognizing that we’re here and we’re here to stay.”

Smith said DAI students make short films, from conception to final product with writers, producers, actors, camera people, storyboard and more.

Films from DAI have been sponsored by the Mississippi Film Commission and the Mississippi Film Alliance. DAI-produced films have been seen in festivals in Ireland,

for instance. One day, you may see a DAI grad’s name plastered in the credits on the “big screen.”

Another talent you’ll see is in the visual art form. Drucilla Nesom is an area resident who displays her work in Southaven and DeSoto County. You may have seen Nesom’s art on display at a Southaven Chamber of Commerce quarterly luncheon, for instance.

“The main thing I’ve been doing is watercolor painting,” Nesom said. “I’ve done everything at some point in my life. I’ve been an artist since I could hold a crayon, and have worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for a majority of my career.”

For Nesom, art is something that brings her joy.

“It’s just something I can get lost in,” Nesom explains. “When I’m in the zone, everything else just disappears. I have an idea and I have to go and get it out of me.” Nesom is one of the many talented artists that call DeSoto County home and that proudly display their galleries all over the Mid-South.

From the visual to the musical, on the screen to the stage and canvas, arts are alive at the Top of Mississippi. ■

A BRIDGE TO

THE FUTURE

The city of Southaven understands that it’s never enough to just be satisfied with status and prosperity. It’s one of the largest cities in Mississippi and the center of the second-wealthiest county in the state. Yet, Southaven continues to look for means of continued growth and prosperity beyond today and into the future.

Building on that foundation of success in Southaven, “Bridge Academy” allows the city’s youth to learn leadership skills, explore business opportunities, and discover the importance of connecting with the Southaven community. Bridge Academy also allows the city’s business leaders to mentor and give back to the participating students.

“We were hoping to bridge the gap between generations, between our high schoolers who are our future leaders, and our current business leaders,” said Southaven Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Debbie King, who first envisioned a new kind of leadership program. “We also wanted to bridge any gap in training challenges, and leadership knowledge that companies didn’t have resources to provide to their employees.”

The Bridge Academy is a six-month professional development program that

(Bridge Academy)

certifies young participants in training for career advancement and promotional activities while working with company employees aspiring to hone their leadership skills.

Between March and August, classes are held once a month with local leaders in their specific and unique careers. Together with their assigned students. they are learning leadership development, community engagement, networking, government insight and civic awareness.

The Bridge Academy exemplifies the Southaven Chamber Foundation’s dedication to connecting business, education, and community. It fulfills the Foundation’s mission to advance the educational opportunities to the community of Southaven.

The Foundation pursues a mission of providing educational programming that aims to develop the professional capabilities of business professionals who live and/or work in Southaven, facilitating mentorship of high school and college students interested in pursuing diverse careers; and encouraging significant industry experts to pursue philanthropic opportunities to serve the residents of Southaven.

(City Hall)
(NWCC)

Through its innovative program and unwavering commitment to professional development, Bridge Academy enhances individual careers, showcases opportunities and contributes to the overall growth and prosperity of Southaven.

Those who take part in the Bridge Academy gain an understanding of effective leadership through practical skills training. They build relationships through class room instruction, industry tours, service, hospitality, and networking to influence and contribute positively to the Southaven community.

Academy mentees gain firsthand knowledge of various aspects of business and local government operations, increasing their effectiveness as community leaders and informed citizens. The Bridge Academy also equips participants with the necessary skills to navigate the modern business landscape while reiterating the importance of ethical standards.

Having high ethics in business is of utmost importance. There’s a level of trust and reputation developed with customers, employees, and stakeholders. Companies with integrity enjoy a stronger reputation, customer loyalty and long-term success. Employees who work with strong ethics

help reduce the risk of legal issues, fines and penalties. There’s also the enjoyment of a positive work environment, stronger employee values and respect. And, a workplace that offers a high ethical environment contributes positively to their communities and takes responsibility for their actions.

The first graduates of Bridge Academy were recognized during the Southaven Chamber of Commerce’s Quarterly Luncheon in August of 2024 and four of the fifteen mentees were awarded non-traditional scholarships.

Bridge Academy was the vision of Debbie King, who felt the next generation should learn why those skills mean success in whatever career track they might choose.

Adult participants, called leadership academy mentors, could explain what they do to students who may have a career interest and why the “soft” skills have helped them get to where they are.

“Companies would tell us that they had identified employees that needed leadership training and they didn’t have the time nor the resources to train them,” King explained. “They needed ‘soft skills,’ training such as customer service, email and phone etiquette, conflict management, and financial awareness. Chamber members shared that their employees lacked drive and polished leadership skills, and conveyed if we could teach that or identify that, bottle it and sell it to business owners, it would be invaluable. There are lots of life coaches, leadership trainers, and motivational speakers in our area or within a day’s travel that can instruct. What if we could partner with educators from Northwest Mississippi Community College and University of MS and write a curriculum that would actually help companies train their employees?”, King thought. And so the Southaven Chamber Foundation (a 501c3 within the Southaven Chamber) was established and a program of work began to create the Bridge Leadership Academy. King also pointed out that workforce development initiatives are in place, and this leadership academy would compliment those efforts having an even larger impact on the Southaven community and area.

“To say it again, we hoped to bridge the gap between our future leaders and our business leaders,” King said. “People should know more about other generations and more about where they live,

work, play, and worship, it instills a sense of loyalty and pride.”

That meant that Bridge Academy classes were more than just about business.

“I wanted them to meet the Chief of Police, I wanted them to meet the Mayor and city department heads,” said King. Civics then became part of the curriculum for the participants and their mentees.

“We talked about voting,” King said. “We talked about the importance of elected officials and how that starts, and how it goes from the city level to the county level, to the state level and the federal level. I believe knowing births a desire to have a voice and take action. It just makes business leadership look different. It provides a different lens, a different perspective.”

One of the people who spoke at a Southaven Chamber luncheon was State Auditor Shad White, who came from Jackson to Southaven to address the business community.

“He came in and talked about our youth and those who are leaving Mississippi in droves to go start their life elsewhere or study elsewhere,” King said. “It got me thinking about how the Bridge Academy could tether some of our youth here to keep them involved in our companies and in our businesses here locally.”

The vision of Bridge Academy became a reality after King presented it to the Southaven Chamber Foundation Board of Directors and she and April Armstrong requested to meet with DeSoto County School Superintendent, Cory Uselton.

“She (King) wanted to have a leadership program that was more for people who live and work in Southaven,” said April Armstrong, Chamber Foundation Board President. “She also wanted to add a component with the Southaven Young Professionals, thinking more futuristic on our future business, our rising juniors and seniors to get them more involved in business, building Southaven and encouraging them that when they do graduate, we’ve planted some seeds for them to remain in Southaven.”

Armstrong said the adult mentors come from all walks of life, from executives to entry level people.

“The Bridge Academy adult participants are our mentors,” Armstrong explained. “We had realtors, we had bankers, food service, people from different industries, and we paired them with the mentees.”

Armstrong noted that most of the

Full Body Wellness with Light Therapy!

mentees, or student participants, came from the local schools.

“We partnered with DeSoto County Schools and paired their students with the business leaders, and had the students with an interest in a similar industry,” she said.

“We had a high school senior who started real estate school as a result of Bridge Academy and his mentor was Hollye Granier from TurnKey Realty,” King added. “Another mentee was from Brown Youth Initiative and interned at the Chamber, she aspires to be a doctor.”

The partnership and cooperation with DeSoto County Schools was tantamount to the first-year success of Bridge Academy. The vast majority of the mentees were students from DeSoto County school district that had applied and were chosen to take part. Work-based teachers and career coaches with DeSoto County Schools helped select the mentees.

“As they started to develop the Bridge Academy participants that first year, we were then able to promote that to our students,” said Beth Turner, DeSoto County Schools Director of Workforce Development. “Once the Bridge Academy selected their participants, we were able to allow students who were interested in being part of that cohort to their student group, to identify specific businesses or people they wanted to work with or felt it was an avenue that they wanted to explore.”

Turner said it was exciting to have the opportunity to work with the Bridge Academy in this manner for a number of reasons.

“One, to be able to allow our students that may not have been part of our Career Tech program or some of our other avenues that we had, to be able to connect with,” she said. “Two, this gives them an opportunity to either explore a specific pathway or learn more about that particular career pathway, or just have an opportunity for a summer internship.”

Turner called the program broadbased and well-constructed.

“I was very pleased with just the structure of how the program worked, from the business leaders who were participating in that, to the students and different topics they were exposed to, and the different opportunities they had while they were attending the sessions,” Turner said. The mentees were able to shadow their mentors at their jobs for a day during the program giving them first hand perspective of working in that particular industry.

The Hope Center

Explain what the Hope Center is and what it does.

The Hope Center of North Mississippi is dedicated to empowering at-risk youth in 3rd to 12th grades. We create a safe and supportive environment to foster their growth and development, leveraging the national mentoring model of our partners in the Mentor Memphis Grizzlies Foundation to maximize our impact. All of our events are free to the students we serve. Our activities are sponsored through private and corporate donations. We are also an official Affiliate of the Mentor Memphis Grizzlies Foundation.

In what specific ways does the Hope Center mentor to at-risk youth?

We focus on group mentoring and 1:1 mentoring of students in 3rd-12th grades. Growing up in today’s world is challenging. Our mentoring team works with these students to give them a voice and help them as they mature into our future leaders. The benefits of mentorship are great and much-needed in today’s climate and have been documented to reduce gang violence, increase leadership skills, reduce bullying, and increase school performance and citizenship. We host local Youth Leadership Conferences in which our local Top Level leaders personally engage and

invest in our youth. Our mentors spend quality time with their mentees and comply with our organizational expectations. We also host group activities regularly with our mentors and mentees.

How important is the connection with the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation to accomplishing the Hope Center’s mission?

Our close relationship with the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation has been key to our long-term outcomes and success. We maintain strict compliance guidelines and certification requirements to maintain our Silver-Level Affiliate Partnership with the Foundation. This has been the game changer in maintaining up-to-date high-level mentoring elements and cultural competence.

How important has it been for the Southaven community to support the Hope Center?

The Southaven Community Partnership has been a game changer for us. The entire community supports our mission. This key relationship and strong foundation of trust has led to many resources and allows us to serve more and more families.

Going forward, the Bridge Academy student participants will be high school juniors who can use the program to do some career exploration before their senior year, Turner said.

“To where they may get connected through a job shadow opportunity or an internship through our career coaches, or if they are seeking a job, the work-based learning route may be a great opportunity for them,” Turner said. “By doing that during their junior year, they still have another year with them to help develop what their career interests may be, and maybe get them connected.”

Carol Houston is a work-based learning coordinator with DeSoto County Schools who was invited to take part in the beginning stages of the Bridge Academy.

“Our whole purpose, in my opinion, is to link our local businesses with our high school graduates, and to bridge that gap and make that connection there,” Houston explained. “I think there are local businesses that are hurting for good employees, and we’ve got high schools in DeSoto County with talented people graduating who need jobs that aren’t going to college. Trades are becoming more valued now.”

(Southaven Police Department)

According to Houston, more students today are not heading straight to college out of high school, but instead have a need, or desire, to enter a career field.

At the same time, employers are constantly seeking qualified employees, Houston said.

“I think our role as work-based learning coordinators is to teach kids how to be good employees,” she explained. “Teach them what employers are looking for and show students where the need is as far as employees.”

Houston added there was a benefit for the student even if the career they were paired with was not their first choice for a career.

“Every career requires communication skills, every career requires employees to be dependable, and those are all skills that they learned by partnering up with somebody in the Academy,” Houston said.

She added the Bridge Academy program can show students there are opportunities for career growth without having to move away from Southaven.

“I believe it opened their eyes to possibilities within this area that they didn’t know were available to them,” Houston noted. “They have something that is familiar now, instead of leaving the area and not knowing exactly what they would find on the other side.”

The work-based learning coordinator expects continued growth in the Bridge Academy program.

Southaven Honda general manager Chris Anderson was a mentor to a student in the Bridge Academy program during the first year of its existence, in 2024.

“When they identified the mentormentee program and they said it was going to be geared toward high school seniors and high school students in general, it piqued my interest,” Anderson said. “I looked back and thought about when I was in high school and how instrumental some of the people I came in contact with were. How they formed my opinions and my goals as far as after high school, going into college and what type of career path I would seek.”

Anderson believed his participation in the Bridge Academy could provide a similar experience to a mentee that he would be paired with.

“I would be able to engage a young person as they embark on leaving high school and going to college or whatever the next step could be,” he said. “It was important that I could be of some assistance, some guidance, assist, potentially giving some information

and insight based on my experiences as far as what I have encountered.”

Anderson’s mentee, Emily Medina, spent time with him at the dealership and both learned much about each other. Medina offered that she was close to family and inquired about his family and what he did on a day-to-day basis overseeing an automobile dealership.

Additionally, Medina did say she was undecided about a career path at the time and what her next step would be.

“She once thought about being a dental hygienist and maybe moving down that path of possibly being a dentist at some point,” said Anderson. “But she did express and inquired about the automobile industry. She was able to spend a day in the dealership shadowing me and I was able to give her insight into what the day-to-day operations of our dealership looks like from a manufacturer’s perspective and the accounting perspective, as far as our office is concerned.”

Additionally, Anderson said Medina came away learning a lot about leadership and what a woman’s influence can be in a predominantly-man’s world.

“We talked about the automotive industry and she didn’t really rule that out,” Anderson said. “Key members of our team are female and she was able to meet those powerful ladies, talk to them and get some great insight.”

Anderson likes the premise of a leadership program anchored in DeSoto County, the area he grew up in.

“We know the growth as far as this county is concerned and we know the challenges that youth face on a day-today basis,” Anderson said. “My employees were able to see Emily in our dealership asking a ton of questions.”

He hoped Medina learned more of what is possible, regardless of what career path might be.

“Don’t limit your opportunities or what you’re willing to explore as you embark on your college life,” Anderson advised.

Some of the presentations during the first year of the Bridge Academy featured digital marketing and artificial intelligence from Terence Green of TJ’s Animation. J. Vincent Demps of Masterchek talked about private investigations and cyber security. Jeff Jones with Refining Leaders spoke about conflict resolution, how to avoid burnout, and mental health and wellness. Sarah David-Cusani from the University of Mississippi touched on diversity, biases, and cultural inclusion.

NEXT LEVEL

The Path4 program offered at the DeSoto Center is a partnership between the University of Mississippi and Northwest Mississippi Community College that gives Mid-South residents access to an affordable college education from two respected institutions—right here at home.

Two degrees: At the end of the Path4 program, you’ll have earned an NWCC associate degree and an Ole Miss bachelor’s degree with the opportunity to pursue graduate degrees in the future. Learn from experts in your field who have connections right here in DeSoto County and the Mid-South, connections that can lead to job opportunities.

In today’s business world, inclusion of different cultures and diversity becomes a very important component, for such things as enhanced creativity and innovation, improved decision-making, an expanded market reach, higher employee retention and engagement in the office place, and more productivity.

One of the prerequisites of Bridge Academy is participants live or work in Southaven.

“If you move to Southaven it’s the best opportunity for you to know all about the city, get plugged into a lot of different companies and also pour into a mentee or high school student with the knowledge you have from other industries,” King said.

Another component of the program is customer service, giving back and its importance. King said participants spent time at a local nonprofit and served.

The Bridge Academy looks to expand its reach and impact and focusing on those high school juniors is one of the key components.

“That will give them the opportunity to do some different career exploration over the summer and through this opportunity,” Turner said. “Hopefully, what they learn by being a partner with Bridge Academy will help them as they do more exploring in their senior year.”

Those who apply and then are selected can look forward to a six-month program full of learning, interaction with influential leaders, while at the same time building long-lasting relationships they will have as they start their own careers.

As more individuals and organizations engage with the Bridge Academy, the ripple effect of its impact will undoubtedly continue to strengthen the fabric of the community, regardless of where their career path takes them after they receive their high school diploma.

“College isn’t for everyone,” King said. “It may be that you have some who want to go to a technical school or they want to go to the police academy, or they want some certification or licensing program like real estate school or this program may aspire them on to a four year degree or master’s program even. You’re never too young or too old to learn.” ■

Ensuring a Healthy Future

More than 50 years ago, a doctor with a special heart for children arrived in north Mississippi and began a medical clinic practice. Today, Dr. D.D. Sidhu’s work for the health of our future has helped Southaven and the region be a leading location for medicine in general, and in this case, pediatric medicine.

It was in 1978 that Dr. Sidhu, a native of India, was recruited to come from Virginia to Senatobia, just down I-55 from Southaven, and start a practice. He quickly learned that a major need was being filled by his presence.

“They told me that I had been the first pediatrician in this area in forever,” Sidhu said. “There was no one, from the Whitehaven Children’s Clinic (now Memphis Children’s Clinic) to Grenada, Mississippi. So, I covered along I-55 in care from Whitehaven to Grenada.”

Above: (Baptist)
Right: (Baptist)

Sidhu’s special training in neonatology, the treatment and care of newborn babies, made him even more valuable for the area. It also required him to be on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

For the first 18 years, Sidhu was delivering babies and taking care of children by himself, but in 1996, a partner came on board and joined him in the practice.

Before an additional physician joined the clinic, Sidhu said there were nights the phone stirred him awake from sleep to request an immediate presence for a baby delivery or a surgery.

“I had to be there because the baby’s condition required me to be there,” he said. “So, in those days, the Highway Patrol people knew my cars, so they wouldn’t stop me if I’m hurrying. They knew I was either on the way to the Senatobia hospital or to Baptist Hospital.”

Today, the clinic Sidhu started in Senatobia now has an additional clinic in Southaven and also in Olive Branch. He and his fellow physicians and staff care for the medical needs of children throughout Northwest Mississippi.

If a more serious medical need has to be addressed, Southaven is home to a leading hospital for care in Baptist Memorial

Hospital-DeSoto, part of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system.

Care for our youth through BaptistDeSoto begins during the time the expectant mother is getting ready for the new arrival.

For instance, Baptist-DeSoto is considered a “Baby Friendly®” designated hospital. That is a designation recognizing hospitals and birthing centers that offer the information, confidence and skills for new mothers to breastfeed their newborn.

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a program developed with the World Health Organization and UNICEF. The Baby-Friendly designation is based on the program’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. The steps are evidencebased practices developed to promote breastfeeding in maternity and newborn care facilities.

The hospital offers a free anytime, anywhere online education program for prenatal care, childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care and more. Called YoMingo, it is designed to give convenient access to valuable information and support at every stage of the health care journey. This online education program is available on any device and comes in multiple languages.

“During COVID, we had to discover how we were going to get all of the educational opportunities for maternity and newborns, and pediatrics under the age of one,” Kelle Roberts, Administrative Director of Marketing said. “With YoMingo, we went out and brought the education to the parents.”

Roberts said that many people don’t get maternity care, don’t have that prenatal care, and so YoMingo encourages mothers-to-be about what to expect at any point in pregnancy.

More information is found on the hospital website.

Baptist-DeSoto has another recognition indicating exceptional pediatric care. The facility is recognized as a Blue Distinction Center by Blue Cross Blue Shield. The “Blue Distinction Center” designation is awarded to facilities that demonstrate expertise in delivering quality healthcare in specific areas, including maternity care. This recognition indicates the hospital meets rigorous criteria established by Blue Cross Blue Shield, which includes quality measures and cost efficiency.

If more serious medical care is required, Baptist-DeSoto does provide outpatient

pediatric surgeries when needed, and the capability of transfer to Baptist Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Memphis is available if a stay is to be longer than a single day procedure.

Another area where good health care is needed, especially at an early age, is in dental care. A number of dental offices specialize in the care of children, including the addition of a new Southaven location for Pediatric Dental Group & Orthodontics.

The practice has combined its Southaven and Olive Branch offices into one location at Silo Square, located off Getwell Road.

Dr. Nathaniel Denson is one of the pediatric dentists at this location. Denson said a great dental experience begins very early in life for your child, before the baby teeth make their appearance.

“Our dentists and hygienists and assistants are all used to working with kids,” Denson said.

Addressing the fear factor for a young patient is important, and Denson said that means making the visit a fun experience. It also means maximizing the comfort level of a procedure.

If teeth strengthening or braces are needed, Denson said Taylor Collazo in the office handles all of the orthodontics with braces or Invisalign.

Southaven Young Professionals

Explain what the Southaven Young Professionals is all about.

The purpose of Southaven Young Professionals is to provide a space for young professionals to professionally and personally develop. We want to be a resource for the next generation of CEOs, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. We strive to enhance the mission of the Southaven Chamber of Commerce, our local business community, and we want to cultivate leadership development skills, and communication growth, all while serving our Desoto County community. – Bryce Dickerson

How important is it for young professionals in Southaven to connect and network with similar business leaders?

We consider young professionals that are aged 40 and under. During this time, many of us young professionals are experiencing major life changes and transitions. Whether it be starting new careers, getting married, or having children, the Southaven Young Professionals program is all about providing a space to connect with those with similar experiences. It’s important for young professionals to know that there is a group of like-minded individuals that can be used as a resource professionally and personally. – Shawntel Hibbler

What are some of the events that SYP will do to promote great communications and connections?

We host a Southaven Young Professional event once a month. Of those monthly events, we promote leadership development with our lunch and learn, “On the Menu”, community building and involvement through “SYP & Serve”, and networking through “SYP & Social”. We try to remain intentional in providing various types of events to make sure the mission of SYP continues to be relevant. So, we’re doing something every month, it’s just whether we are promoting growth in our professional lives, serving our local community, or networking to create meaningful business connections. – Bryce Dickerson

How can people find out more about the Southaven Young Professionals?

We are on social media, Instagram & Facebook, where we post upcoming events, recaps of previous events, and young professional spotlights. Social media has been our strongest method of communication. We also have our own website, and a monthly newsletter. There is an application process to join SYP. Our executive leadership treats new applicants to coffee so that the first event a new SYP member attends isn’t daunting or intimidating. Meeting for coffee prior is our way of helping to break the ice a little. – Bryce & Shawntel

Woodland Recovery Center

340 Stateline Road W, Southaven, MS

Phone: 662-579-3955 • 24/7 Admissions: 877-837-8282

Tell us about what Woodland Recovery Center is and what it does?

Woodland Recovery Center is a beacon of hope for individuals and families affected by addiction and mental health challenges. Nestled in the heart of Southaven, Mississippi, Woodland provides a full continuum of care that includes detoxification, residential treatment, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).

As part of the Bradford Health Services network, our mission is to empower clients on their journey to recovery, offering evidence-based treatments in a compassionate, supportive environment. Our dedicated team of clinicians, counselors, and support staff work tirelessly to meet the unique needs of each client, fostering resilience, self-awareness, and sustainable recovery.

What are the different types of addictions that can be addressed with Woodland Recovery Center?

At Woodland Recovery Center, we address a broad spectrum of substance use disorders, including but not limited to addiction to opioids, alcohol, stimulants, sedatives, and other prescription or illicit drugs. In addition to substance use, we specialize in treating co-occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and trauma that often accompany addiction. By addressing these underlying issues, we provide a holistic approach to recovery, helping clients heal physically, mentally, and emotionally. No matter the substance or complexity of the struggle, Woodland is equipped with the expertise and compassion to guide clients toward a healthier, more fulfilling life.

How does Woodland’s treatment approach help individuals recover from their addictions?

The success of Woodland Recovery Center lies in our individualized, clientcentered approach to care. Recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all, so we create tailored treatment plans that meet each person where they are in their journey. At Woodland, we see the person, not the diagnosis, understanding that true healing requires addressing the underlying causes and complexities of addiction and mental health struggles. Our programs incorporate evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed care, alongside experiential and holistic modalities like mindfulness and wellness activities. We also emphasize the importance of family involvement, recognizing the vital role loved ones play in the recovery process. Our seamless integration of inpatient and outpatient services ensures continuity of care, empowering clients to build sustainable recovery skills and transition back to their daily lives with confidence.

How has the Southaven community welcomed Woodland Recovery Center and supports what it offers?

The Southaven community has been an incredible partner in our mission to combat addiction and promote mental wellness. From healthcare providers to local organizations, our neighbors have embraced Woodland Recovery Center as a vital resource for healing and support. Community leaders, businesses, and residents alike have shown their commitment by attending our educational events, collaborating on outreach initiatives, and sharing our message of hope. This partnership reflects a shared belief that recovery strengthens not only individuals and families but the entire community. Together, we are breaking the stigma of addiction, fostering understanding, and creating a culture of compassion and resilience in Southaven and beyond.
