“The following pages include opportunities and stories that celebrate what makes Germantown special, the things that make it home.” Dear Neighbors, Welcome to the second edition of go! Germantown, full of events, classes and information we hope will help fill your fall and early winter days with family fun. The following pages include opportunities and stories that celebrate what makes Germantown special, the things that make it home. As the kids are adjusting to the hustle and bustle of back to school and we look forward to cooler fall temperatures, it’s time to start planning a trip to the 46th annual Germantown Festival and looking forward to the first ever Germantown Oktoberfest. Before you know it, we will be sitting down to enjoy Thanksgiving turkey and gathering around Municipal Lake to sing carols and celebrate the lighting of the holiday tree. Let’s all make it a point to get out to at least one community event this season. I look forward to seeing each of you there and hope that you will stop me and say hello. As a city that always strives to improve our customer experience, we welcome comments, suggestions and content ideas. Our communications team would love to hear from you. Big Fun! The Running of the Weenies guarantees a smile at the annual Germantown Festival. By Jane Schneider
I
t’s not easy being small. But being cute and sassy? Those traits might help you win the race. That’s what Germantown Festival goers discover when they gather for the annual Running of the Weenies Race, a contest that pits dachshund against dachshund and often ends in hilarity as these miniature pups dash across a 50-yard track to their owners. Race festivities take place Saturday, September 9, at the Germantown Civic Club Complex. The Best Dressed costume contest begins at 11 a.m., followed by the race at 11:30 a.m. The race is sponsored by the Germantown Animal Shelter.

5 Things to Know About the…Germantown Animal Shelter • The shelter receives approximately 500 animals each year. • The breakout is 50 percent dogs, 50 percent cats • One-third of all animals are returned to owners, two-thirds are adopted or transferred to a rescue group. • The shelter recommends microchipping your pet. This ensures your dog or cat can be easily identified and returned to you if lost. • Support the shelter by joining Friends of the Germantown Animal Shelter. Visit them on Facebook. A family of best-dressed winners, along with master of ceremonies Andy Pouncey.
Far from being a one-hit wonder, this year marks the 23rd season for this festival favorite. Germantown Festival Coordinator Melba Fristick says the weenie race came about in 1995, when Memphis in May celebrated the country of Germany with staged events around the city. One German delegate recommended creating the weenie race and the suggestion “seemed to grab everyone’s attention,” she says. Why dachshunds instead of retrievers? Well, it turns out these little spark plugs have a lot of spunk. The dachshund’s gregarious personality and diminutive size makes for a winning combination. During the race, 50 to 75 dogs excitedly barrel down the course toward their owner or favorite squeaky toy. But crossing the finish line is hardly a given. With several thousand spectators cheering from the stands, anything can happen — and usually does. “Some dogs sit on the starting line, some pass the finish line and go into the stands, and some simply meander around,” says Fristick. “Some chase after their toy or after another dog,” adds Alina Lesniak, animal services manager for the Germantown Animal Shelter. “They are quite entertaining to watch.” It might be best described as controlled chaos, but that’s what makes the weenie race so much fun, bringing back competitors year after year. You also won’t want to miss the Best Dressed costume contest, probably as anticipated as the running of the weenies. “The owners themselves are a breed apart,” notes Fristick. “They are very unique.”
Over the years, some owners have embellished their dog’s costume by creating coordinating outfits of their own. Crowd pleasers have included Cinderella with her carriage and footman, a convict and warden, and a choo-choo train and engineer. “They have to be seen to be believed!” Fristick says with a laugh. A festival for all Of course, the weenie race is just one part of the ever-popular Germantown Festival, one of the community’s most anticipated annual events. This 46-year tradition is coordinated by a dedicated committee of 15 volunteers and hundreds more who pitch in to make this volunteer-run festival a success. Those working behind the scenes find fellowship and camaraderie as people connect from neighborhoods across the city and form long-lasting friendships. “Festival Lady” Melba Fristick is Germantown’s energetic festival coordinator. She knows all of its moving parts intimately and ensures that this weekend event runs smoothly. For Fristick, it’s

You’ll find homemade soaps and garments, jewelry and pottery, photography, flags, and lots more. Live entertainment also adds color, giving everyone a chance to visit and enjoy local music while checking out tasty food offerings. Community groups pitch in on that piece. The Kiwanis club sells popcorn and snow cones, the Farmington Men’s group offers chocolate-covered bacon, even school groups like the Dogwood PTA create gourmet quesadillas for sale to visitors. Bring your kids and grandkids; they’ll love playing games and jumping on the inflatables, a must. Both food booths and inflatables are sponsored by Germantown nonprofits, with a variety of groups receiving proceeds from the event. For car enthusiasts, new and classic cars will be on display. Finally, a Corn Hole Tournament rounds out this year’s offerings, scheduled to follow Saturday’s weenie race. As you can see, there’s plenty to enjoy at this year’s festival, so don’t miss out!

Grinch Gringle
Germantown executive Johnnie Gross loves ringing in the holiday season as the Grinch. By Jane Schneider
“You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch. You really are a heel. You’re as cuddly as a cactus, You’re as charming as an eel, Mr. Grinch. You’re a bad banana with a greasy black peel.”
I
f you’re familiar with Mr. Grinch, the character made famous by Dr. Seuss, you may have spied the city’s own real-life version of Grinch in Germantown’s Holiday Parade. He’s rather hard to miss, really. Painted a ghoulish green and perched behind the wheel of a shiny, fire-engine red 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark V, Johnnie Gross is the epitome of the famous Christmas curmudgeon, though this Grinch isn’t as miserly. “The whole Grinch persona came about in a pretty interesting way,” says Gross. “In the spring of 2011, I took my convertible for an annual check-up and oil change. When I drove the car into the parking lot, one of the mechanics at the place yelled ‘Dude!
Where’d ya get that sled?’ And the concept was born.” Gross is not one to shy away from fun, especially when creating a character is involved. He quickly went online to assemble a costume, including pants made of lime green faux fur, a personalized “Mean One” license plate and a super-sized Max stuffed dog he attached to the hood of his “sled.” His wife K.K.,

And we’re fortunate and blessed to be in the position to do that.” jumped in too, finding a long wig she could braid and outfitting herself as Cindy Lou Who. When December arrived, the pair donned their costumes and drove through the neighborhood honking and waving at neighbors. The following year, Gross decided to take their act on the road by participating in the city’s Holiday Parade. He even hooked up with Amy Stone, owner of Fairys and Frogs Facepainting, whose artistry makes his green face come to life. Since then, the Grinch has become a parade highlight, with family and friends dressing up as Thing One and Thing Two, Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, even Elsa from Disney’s Frozen. Bystanders flock to have their pictures made with the Grinch’s crew before and after the parade. “I think we’re more popular than the dignitaries, the marching bands and the floats. But certainly not Santa Claus,” Gross says with a laugh. “People like to say that Christmas is for children, but I’m not sure I really agree with that. When the faces of the kids and parents light up over receiving a special gift from the Grinch? I truly find
that personally rewarding.” As the parade marches down Farmington, the Grinch and crew toss stuffed animals, bringing smiles to children of all ages. Gross says they give away hundreds of toys each holiday season, and additionally support a number of charities, including Starkey Hearing Foundation, JDRF, Al Chymia Shrine and the Catholic Jubilee Schools. Gross, a graduate of Christian Brothers High School (’78), was one of five growing up in Memphis. While his mother loved to decorate for the holidays, “We didn’t have extra to do the extras.” Nonetheless, their house was filled with joy and his love of Christmas never left him. Gross enjoys having fun in many areas of his life beyond his job as practice manager for Shea Ear Clinic. His creative energy was fueled by his involvement with Memphis in May, where he wrote and coordinated the Miss Piggy contest for many years, his team winning the skit competition five years running. He and K.K. were married in May 2003 between the preliminaries and finals of the Miss Piggy contest. K.K. had two teenage daughters at the time and the couple now enjoys three grandchildren as well.

Their hobby of dressing in costume for special occasions is reflected at home, where they have an entire bedroom devoted to storing their colorful assortment of outfits. “We didn’t share this passion,” Gross says, “but K.K. came to accept it. “And embrace it!” she adds. “It’s a lot of work. He’ll make the plan and I’ll do the execution.”
Light Up the Night with Holiday Cheer
“We just like to have fun and we like to share our fun,” adds Gross. “We like to make people happy. And we’re fortunate and blessed to be in the position to do that.” Beyond entertaining people, Gross believes their generous spirit may also help the City of Germantown. On the day of the parade, when thousands arrive to enjoy the festivities, visitors, “have a financial impact on many of our local businesses that day. I’d like to think that maybe, in a small way, the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who, along with family and friends, play a tiny part in all of this coming together.” • Getting into the holiday spirit has never been easier, thanks to Germantown’s Holiday Lighting Contest. Held in conjunction with the Beautification Commission each December, the contest is now online so you can discover what neighborhoods across the city are doing as residents and businesses turn on their holiday glow. The city has seen a jump in participation since moving the process to social media last year, with more than 100 photos of light displays being submitted online. The lighting categories include Best in Show, Best Business Decorations, Children's Christmas, Religious Display, Traditional Overall Display, Traditional Entryway, Lights Galore, Nutcracker, Subdivision and Zero Lot. “Last year’s most decorated house had people coming into the neighborhood to view it,” says Parks and Recreation Director Pam Beasley. “It was quite something.” Want to get in on the fun? Get the details at Facebook.com/ GermantownParksandRecreation starting November 25, get busy, then upload photos of your home or business (include an address with each submission). Be sure to shoot your display at night to capture the best light. Photos receiving the most votes on Facebook win. Judges will announce the winners in midDecember, contacting residents via email and on Facebook. Great prizes include gift cards to excellent local restaurants and businesses, so don’t miss out. Let’s all join in and light up the night. •

ur city functions smoothly, largely due to the behind-the-scenes work done by residents just like you — volunteers who serve on the city’s numerous boards and commissions. If you’ve ever wondered how decisions are made that impact the shape and feel of our city, serving as a member on one of these governing bodies will provide you first-hand knowledge. Currently, 180 residents participate on the city’s boards and commissions, which generally act in an advisory capacity to elected officials and city department personnel in areas
of planning, finance, recreation, education, development, beautification, transportation and human resources. Commissions generally meet once a month to discuss the year’s objectives and determine how best to achieve established goals. Some groups with subcommittees or special activities require additional sessions. An alderman serves as liaison to each group. As for their work, the beautification commission helps determine how to set up and manage the holiday lighting contest. Members of the financial advisory commission might make recommendations on how to appropriate funds for a new city park project.

ave you thought about attending Germantown’s Neighborhood Summit, only to worry that it might not be for you? No worries, you are welcome.
“You don’t have to be a neighborhood leader to participate,” states Neighborhood Coordinator Sherrye Clark. “The event is free and open to everyone.” In fact, the point of the summit is to connect residents with other organizations across the city and share information that can help our neighborhoods become more vibrant and cohesive. The Neighborhood Summit takes place Tuesday, October 24, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at The Great Hall & Conference Center, 1900 South Germantown Road. During the meeting, residents
will hear from city leaders about upcoming projects, economic development efforts and the city’s budget. But lest you think this all sounds a bit too stuffy, hold up. Germantown Mayor Mike Palazzolo will be dressed as a referee to drive home this year’s theme, “Get in the Game.” Clark says organizers will be offering fun ways residents can get plugged into community life. The conference begins with an opening reception where attendees will sample tasty appetizers and stop by tables hosted by neighborhood associations, commissions and other organizations of note. Neighborhood tables will focus on their association’s achievements and contributions. Commissions and other groups will give “Twitter” talks (brief

Be sure to bring your appetite, too, since local restaurateurs will have tempting food and craft beer samples on hand. Come on over. Germantown makes it easy to get in the game. •

Germantown’s Neighborhood Awards Do you know someone who goes the distance to improve your neighborhood? Here’s your chance to shine a light on those individuals who often work behind the scenes to make our neighborhoods stronger. “These awards help honor those who go above and beyond what’s expected, as well as show what other groups are doing,” says Sherrye Clark. For example, one neighborhood came up with a Popsicles in the Park activity, enabling families with rising kindergarten and first-graders to meet and become aquainted, thus easing back-to-school jitters. So consider a person, committee member or neighborhood association you would like to nominate. The awards are strongest when many people participate, so we want to hear from you! Read about the three categories below, then consider your nominees. The winners will receive prizes and ride in the Germantown Christmas Parade. For information on award applications or to register, contact Sherrye Clark at SClark@Germantown-TN.gov, or call 757-7203.
• Neighborhood Leader of the Year This award goes to a board member who exemplifies leadership through their neighborhood and/or community involvement. This individual has also helped to envision the future, identify paths to success and carried out the city's vision as stated in Germantown Forward 2030. • Neighbor of the Year The Neighbor award honors an individual who routinely goes the extra mile to help others, often quietly working in the background without expectation of recognition, and whose tireless dedication makes a difference by enriching the lives of neighbors. This individual inspires others through their compassion, encouragement, understanding and strength. The nominee does not have to be an officer of the neighborhood association, on the board of directors or a committee member. •
• Neighborhood Association of the Year Engaged neighborhood associations and their members are at the core of improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods. This award salutes beautification projects, better communication, the creation of neighborhood gatherings, maintaining community property and simply caring for one another. The award winner will have assisted in envisioning the future, identifying paths to success and carrying out a vision as stated in Germantown Forward 2030.

The Rippingtons Saturday, September 23, 8 p.m. Enjoy an evening of outstanding contemporary jazz with the Rippingtons, a Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz group founded in 1985 by guitarist and composer Russ Freeman. The group has passed the 30-year mark and continues to innovate. Under Freeman’s production, the group has released 22 albums, all of which have attained top-five Billboard status. The group’s influences are wide-ranging, from instrumental pop to rock, from world music to EDM and R&B. Rhiannon Giddens Friday, September 29, 8 p.m. Rhiannon Giddens is the co-founder of the Grammy Award-winning string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops, in which she also plays banjo and fiddle. She began gaining recognition as a solo artist when she stole the show at the T Bone Burnett-produced "Another Day, Another Time" concert at New York City’s Town Hall in 2013. The elegant bearing, prodigious voice and fierce spirit that brought the audience to its feet that night is also abundantly evident on Giddens’ critically acclaimed solo debut, the Grammy-nominated Tomorrow Is My Turn, which masterfully blends American musical genres like gospel, jazz, blues and country, showcasing her extraordinary emotional range and dazzling vocal prowess. performances, the film subtly reveals the challenges and triumphs of creating an artistic event in such challenging economic and political circumstances. The film features several artists, including Habib Koité. This is a free event with reservations required. Contact the box office at boxoffice@gpacweb.com or 751-7500 for reservations. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Saturday, October 28, 8 p.m. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s bold vision of top global choreographers, distinctively groundbreaking pieces and virtuoso dancers has fostered a jewel of a dance company. The company’s pioneering spirit arises from a dual set of home cities: Aspen, nestled in the Rocky Mountains and Santa Fe, gracing the southwestern plateau. Shaping the cultural landscape of these communities and influencing the dance field at large is a contemporary ballet company now two decades old. A deep commitment to curating new ballets while cultivating choreographic talent has resulted in an adventurous repertoire. A European sensibility glossed with American high-spiritedness forges ASFB’s aesthetic, as the company has come to epitomize the contemporary-classical genre. Bruce Hornsby Thursday, November 2, 7:30 p.m. Singer and keyboardist Bruce Hornsby is known for the spontaneity and creativity of his live performances. He became a household name after receiving a Best New Artist Grammy in 1987 with Bruce Hornsby and the Range. His commercial stock soared early on when “The Way It Is,” the title track of his 1986 debut album, became the most played song on American radio in 1987, winning ASCAP’s Song of the Year award. That song,
along with subsequent hits “Mandolin Rain” and “Every Little Kiss,” established Hornsby in the music industry. Despite his early mainstream successes, Hornsby has pursued a more personal, idiosyncratic musical path, focusing on projects that spark his creative interest and musical progress. Jazz in the Box presents Polly Gibbons Friday, November 3, 7 and 8:30 p.m. Habib Koité and Bamada Thursday, November 16, 7:30 p.m. One of Africa’s most popular and celebrated musicians, Habib Koité hails from the West African nation of Mali. He descends from a line of griots, traditional troubadours who provide wit, wisdom and entertainment to the public. Koité takes this role to the world at large, his charisma and magnetism translating easily across cultural divides. He is also famous for his unique approach to playing the guitar; he tunes his instrument to the pentatonic scale. Joining Koité is the group Bamada, comprised of Malian musicians with whom Koité has been friends since childhood. Together they combine rock and classical techniques with Malian tunings and are recognized the world over as master musicians and performers. Gregory Porter Friday, November 17, 8 p.m. An artist whose music is at once timeless yet utterly of its time, Gregory Porter solidified his standing as his generation’s most soulful jazz singer-songwriter with the recent release of Take Me to the Alley, the much-anticipated follow-up to his million-selling, Grammy-winning 2013 Blue Note debut Liquid Spirit. He’s earned comparisons to Nat King Cole and Bill Withers thanks to a rich

voice that fuses jazz, soul and R&B. He’s worked with everyone from Buddy Guy to Dianne Reeves to Disclosure. On signature songs like the blithe “Be Good (Lion’s Song)” and his remake of “The ‘In’ Crowd,” Porter channels the spirit of his idol Cole and proves he can effortlessly combine the power of a gospel shouter with the honeyed tone of a crooner. PB&J: mömandpöp Saturday, November 18, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. GPAC Youth Symphony Program Winter Concert Sunday, November 19, 3 p.m. Now in it’s ninth season, the GPAC Youth Symphony Program offers opportunities for young musicians to improve upon their technique, learn basic music theory, work with an ensemble and interact with professional guest musicians. The program consists of four groups: Mozart String Ensemble for ages 7 to 12, Mendelssohn String Orchestra for ages 12 to 16, Wind Ensemble for woodwind, brass and percussion and the GPAC Youth Symphony Orchestra for ages 14 to 19 years. Students are admitted by audition only in May and August. GPAC believes that finances should not prevent a motivated and talented student from participating in our youth symphony program. GPAC provides financial aid and scholarships through the GPAC Arts Education Fund. For more information, contact Emily Hefley at 7517665 or emily@gpacweb.com.
