Dear Neighbors, Welcome to the fourth edition of go! Germantown, full of information about summer events, classes and camps the whole family is sure to enjoy. We will also take a look at a few of the things that make Germantown a great place to live – our dedicated and hard-working police department and our residents who give back to help make Germantown a true community of kindness. The following pages include stories that celebrate Germantown’s focus on public safety, which continues to be a leading reason why families choose to call our community home. City leaders have worked to establish public safety as a priority by diligently investing in training and equipment, expanding services and supporting all of our first responders. The Germantown Police Department is celebrating the recent re-accreditation by the Tennessee Association of Police Chiefs. There are also two very special families in our community that deserve much recognition and praise for their support of our first responders. The Carney family has established the non-profit Germantown First Responder Scholarship Fund to raise money to support postsecondary education for children of police and fire employees. In addition, the Young family has tirelessly worked to organize Cop Stop in Germantown, which has now spread to nine states across our country. Last, but certainly not least, the City is thrilled to announce the launch of our Volunteer Germantown program in conjunction with Volunteer Odyssey. Volunteer Germantown will serve as a hub to connect you and your family with volunteer opportunities within our community and the greater Memphis area. The April launch of this program coincides with “National Volunteer Month.” In addition, this April is particularly symbolic in the Mid-South as April 4 marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There is no better way to live out the legacy of Dr. King, than through volunteerism and acts of service to the community. I hope during the summer months you will embrace the Volunteer Germantown program and help to solidify our City's reputation as a community of kindness. To get started, simply visit VolunteerGermantown.com. Comments, suggestions or content ideas? The City’s communications team would love to hear from you. When Meals Can Heal Cop Stop builds a bridge between police and residents by offering meals to share. By Jane Schneider

t’s a busy Friday morning at Ben and Kristen Bowman’s home, but instead of heading to the local hospital where Ben serves as an emergency room doctor, the couple is cooking. On the bar awaits a fragrant array of fixings: a bountiful tray of lasagna, crisp Caesar salad, garlic bread, a decadent chocolate chip bundt cake and a metal tub filled with bottled waters. Soon, squad cars begin pulling up outside. “They’re here,” Kristen calls out. And their guests — detectives, patrolmen and other officers from the city’s police department — stream through the dining room and into the kitchen. “We appreciate y’all doing this,” one patrolman calls out as he loads up his plate. “I’m home during the day cooking anyway,” replies Kristen with a laugh. “So it’s an easy thing to do.” For the past two years, the young professionals have frequently provided a home-cooked meal for the Germantown police and fire departments. The Bowmans are part of approximately 200 people who take part in Cop Stop, a program created by Joanna and Bob Young as a way of bringing together police, firefighters and residents in a casual setting for food and fellowship. “It’s all about building relationships,” says Young. The program started out modestly enough, just a Friday night dinner every other week at the Young’s home for a few officers. Joanna’s son, Tucker, came up with the name. Now, 12 to 15 meals are hosted each month — everything from breakfast to dinner is served by neighbors, civic groups, local businesses and even schools. Detective Rob Bertling frequently attends Cop Stops over his lunch hour. “I like coming. I think it’s a great thing to do,” he says. “It’s a

good way to meet people in the community. I think there was some anxiety about whether you were going to someone’s home who we’ve served. I used to check the call report but Joanna vets the people who participate.” Normally, 10 to 15 officers swing through for a meal, visiting with colleagues they don’t regularly see at the office and chatting with hosts and neighbors. “Putting a face with a badge is good. And we get to know the cops,” Bowman says, pointing to a young officer standing at the bar, whose

wife just had a baby last month. “Some officers were curious about our intent,” admits Young. “They hadn’t heard of it and were cynical at first but that was put to bed when they realized we were sincere.” It was an act of kindness, a way of reaching out and bridging a divide that can sometimes yawn between police and the citizens they serve. How Cop Stop Began Cop Stop was something of a continuation of a practice the Youngs started 20 years ago while serving in the Marine Corps in San Diego.

Joanna and Kristen recruit new hosts during Neighborhood Summit; The Bowman family feels Cop Stop helps build relationships.

Bob would grill steaks on a Friday night and invite one or two of his buddies from the barracks over to join them. In time, Friday Night Steak Night became a tradition, bringing soldiers together for an evening of camaraderie. When the couple moved to Poplar Estates in 2014, Young found herself wanting to say thank you to an officer she’d gotten to know working Riverdale Elementary school’s carpool line. She wondered if the police were even allowed to accept personal dinner invitations, though, so she called Germantown’s deputy chief Rodney Bright with her proposal. Bright was initially hesitant. “Three to five years ago, law enforcement was being quite scrutinized across the country,” he notes, observing that police are usually encountering residents in times of crisis. “Often people are not having their best day if we show up. But this was an opportunity, a chance to build relationships.”

Cop Stop’s popularity has gained such momentum it’s been replicated in Millington, Arlington, Bartlett, Memphis, Collierville and Oakland as well as eight other states across the Southeast. Young sends out an information packet via their website to those who inquire about starting a group. As the lunch hour winds down, Bowman rinses dishes and packs up the leftovers which will be sent to the police department so others can enjoy the meal. “It’s been good for the soul of our department, for my officers to know that they are appreciated,” says Bright. “When you’re in this line of work, that encouragement is important.” Bright likens it to the cheering crowd that lifts up a team at a critical moment during a game, giving players a second wind. “I appreciate Cop Stop giving us our second wind,” he says. •

Young agrees. “You can have a negative opinion until you sit across the table from someone. Then you can no longer say all cops are bad,” she says. “Relationships change when you begin to get to know people.” “What Cop Stop has done is provide a way for the community to show support and appreciation for what our men and women do dayin and day-out,” adds Bright. “It’s not a time to talk about complaints but to open doors and love on our officers,” says Joanna. Initially, Young enlisted help from friends, but she then reached out to residents on Germantown’s Facebook page and word about Cop Stop quickly spread. Those who volunteer must agree to follow the guidelines she’s established. The website also answers questions like whether you can mention Cop Stop to get out of a ticket (no) or air grievances (no).

Ain’t No Sunshine ... Remembering the gifts of neighborhood coordinator Sherrye Clark. By Jane Schneider

A

bright light dimmed in Germantown’s Economic and Community Development office this winter. Neighborhood Coordinator Sherrye Harris Clark passed away unexpectedly of cancer on February 6. She was 61.

Clark leaves behind her parents, her husband, Mike, three children (Erin, Meredith and Tyler Wadlington), three “bonus kids” (Eddie Clark, Lisa Vegors and Christy Campos) and spouses, as well as eight “bonus grandkids.” Clark worked as a liaison between Germantown’s neighborhood associations and city government, promoting neighborhoods, keeping residents aware of city functions and making connections. “She was protective of the neighborhoods,” notes neighborhood services manager Joe Nunes, who hired Clark for the newly created position 13 years ago. Nunes was initially unsure just what the job would entail, but Clark quickly made it her own. Housed in a department that oversees economic development, code enforcement, sanitation contracting and planning, her sunny disposition proved uplifting to all. “Sherrye was a cheerleader,” says department head Cameron Ross, director of economic and community development. “She was our sunshine every day. We all needed that.” Clark’s joie de vivre led her to create Friday Funday, a casual lunch of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs that fostered camaraderie among the office staff. Her passion grew to include the Neighborhood Preservation Commission, where she coordinated the annual Tour of Remodeled Homes and Landscapes and the Neighborhood Summit. She assisted the police department with Germantown Night Out, became a member of the fire department’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and often helped parks and recreation staff with city events. “She was our department

organizer,” says Nunes. “She had great positive energy.” “My wife often introduced Sherrye as ‘my husband’s work wife,’” says George Dean, senior code compliance officer and Clark’s frequent lunch partner. Clark’s technical savvy often made her the go-to person for computer or phone issues. Yet after-hours, “she would judge the neighborhood chili cook-off. Sherrye had strong interpersonal skills,” says Dean. “She could talk to the King of Sheba as easily as a ditch digger.” She seemingly knew everyone in town, too. “We couldn’t get to the back of the Hobby Lobby without getting stopped three times,” he says with a laugh. Clark’s abundant heart meant she always had room for one more person in her life. “She was a great friend. Even my daughters liked her. She was so welcoming,” says planning manager Cindy Bond. “Sherrye knew what you needed before you did. She was very giving.” Dean agrees. “She was very successful at making others feel comfortable and important.” She also loved being a fixer and often tapped her vast network for help. Bond remembers assisting Clark with The Great Race one year when one of the antique cars broke down. Clark quickly phoned a few friends and within hours, the part appeared, much to the owner’s delight. “When neighborhood organizers would approach her about having a parade, Sherrye would say, ‘You’re not having a parade, you’re having a rolling block party,’” says Nunes. “It was her way of getting around ordinances and helping the neighborhoods.” The day after Clark’s passing, Ross brought in counselors to help his grief-stricken staff deal with the unexpected news. Her illness, which happened over the span of a week, left everyone reeling. Her cube is now emptied. Her laughter, a mere memory. But with the planting of a sapling just outside her office window, the memory of Sherrye Harris Clark — and the sunshine she brought to Germantown — will live on. •

What I Did Before My Summer Vacation How to safeguard your home while you’re away. By Jane Schneider

S

ummertime is just around the corner and that means the beach will soon be calling. As you finalize vacation plans, be sure to take a few minutes to create a home safety plan as well. Preventative measures on the front end will bring you peace of mind, knowing your home is safe while you’re away. Start by considering how long you’ll be gone and give a house key and contact information to a trusted friend or neighbor. Simple measures like stopping the mail, putting lights on a timer, and leaving curtains as they usually appear will ensure others are unaware you’re away. Give a heads-up to the alarm company and let them know you’ll be absent. Make sure the alarm is set properly before you leave. And did you know the Germantown Police department makes their assistance available to residents while they’re out of town? If you contact the police department a few weeks before your departure, “We’ll send an officer to your home who can come by daily and shine a light or walk the property and check for cars in the driveway,” says Deputy Chief Rodney Bright. Residents must fill out a request form (see details below) and file it with the police department. But once that is done, officers will add checking on your property to their daily roster of duties. Thanks to active community policing, home burglaries across Germantown have declined 30 percent from 2016 to 2017. But officers can’t be everywhere at once. Community policing also relies on residents and business owners being the

eyes and ears of each neighborhood. Keep a watch out for suspicious activity. Walk your neighborhood regularly and learn to recognize where residents’ cars are typically parked. If something looks suspicious or out of the ordinary, call the police. Better to be safe than sorry. •

SIX TIPS FOR HOME SAFETY 1) Have a trusted friend or neighbor keep an eye on your house. Be sure to leave a contact number in case of an emergency. 2) Leave lights on timers and a car in the drive to give the appearance of normal activity. 3) Unplug computers, other electronic devices and television sets to protect from power surges. 4) Make sure your property is well lit and that shrubbery is kept low. 5) Lock up outdoor equipment such as bikes, mowers and trash cans. 6) Be savvy when posting to social media; keep destinations and time-frames vague. Find more security tips at Germantown-TN.gov/Safety.

Helping the Helpers A benefit concert at GPAC will launch the First Responders Scholarship Fund. By Jane Schneider

L

iving in a community knits people together in unlikely ways. As a participant of Germantown’s Citizen Police Academy, retired Northwest Airlines pilot James Carney has been learning first-hand how the police do their job in Germantown and what citizens can do to aid in that effort. It’s been an eye-opening experience. During ride-alongs with officers, Carney has gotten to know the men and women behind the badge. Today, they are no longer just officers of the law, but parents who are raising children, tending to the elderly, babysitting grandkids and monitoring teens. The more Carney heard their stories, the more he considered how he and his wife, Janine, could make a meaningful contribution to the lives of first responders. That’s when he hit on the idea of starting a college fund. Janine enthusiastically agreed, provided they widen the circle to include members of the fire department. Those first responders had been a blessing to her family, answering frequent calls to her mother’s home as her health gradually declined. No matter the call, “The firemen were always sweet, caring and professional,” Janine says. Thus, the Germantown First Responders Scholarship Fund was born. The organization gained its 501(c)3 nonprofit status in January 2018. Board members include Jim and Janine Carney, dentist Chip Linebarier, real estate agent Andrea Weaver and CPA Mark McBryde. The scholarship is intended to help defray costs for qualified students who enroll in college, trade or technical school. “We know going to college is expensive; there are living expenses and books,” she says. “However they use this scholarship is fine with us.”

To raise money, the Germantown First Responders Benefit Concert will take place Saturday, June 16, at 7 p.m. at the Germantown Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $30 and available at the GPAC box office or on the web at GPACweb.com. The concert will feature the Farrell Webber band from St. Louis, the School of Rock Germantown tour band and Houston High sophomore and country singer, Lydia Waldrop. “We appreciate first responders,” says Janine. “We respect and appreciate what they do for us.” Of course, they manage the big events — car accidents, fires, break-ins — but they respond to smaller incidents, too. By way of example, Janine tells the story of how Jim was walking their dog one morning when he heard an animal whining. He soon found an elderly pup that had gotten itself wedged between some fencing. Unable to dislodge the dog, Carney called the police for help. Soon, two squad cars arrived and together they were able to free the dog and return it to the backyard. The officers later stopped by to alert the resident of the incident. Carney feels it’s those acts of kindness that exemplify the role first responders play in a community. The Carneys plan to work with guidance counselors at Houston High School to refine their application criteria. Scholarships will be available to children of police, fire and emergency technicians who qualify. How much money will be given away annually is yet to be determined. The benefit concert will kick off fundraising efforts with other activities to follow later in the year. With 800 seats to fill, Janine Carney wants first responders and others across Germantown to turn out in force for an event she hopes will keep on giving. •

Volunteer Germantown Eager to Lend a Hand? It’s easier than ever to find volunteer opportunities. By Jane Schneider

W

hen VESTA Home Show announced that Germantown Education Foundation (GEF) would be its charity partner for 2017, there was just one catch: GEF would be responsible for filling the 385 volunteer slots the 30-day show in Germantown would require. Executive director Stephanie Brockway usually sends out emails to the city’s teachers and parents soliciting help. But last year, she had a more powerful tool at her fingertips. Brockway logged onto Volunteer Odyssey, a Memphis-based website that matches people across the Mid-South looking to volunteer with nonprofits in need of manpower. Her appeal for the home show extended far beyond Germantown, reaching hundreds of people who routinely check in on the site each day. “Volunteer Odyssey is a very well-used site and we had a lot of great volunteers come our way,” says Brockway. Now, the City of Germantown is partnering with Volunteer Odyssey to create Volunteer Germantown, a platform that will be dedicated to linking residents to quality volunteer opportunities in both Germantown and beyond. The site also enables nonprofits to post events and details about their volunteer needs. The project dovetails with Germantown Forward 2030, the city’s long-range strategic plan that identifies kindness as one of its community values.

“We have many people involved in volunteerism in Germantown, but now it’s time to take it to the next level. Instead of relying on word of mouth, residents can turn to Volunteer Germantown,” says Mayor Mike Palazzolo, who helped foster the partnership. The web page, housed on the City of Germantown’s website, will be a portal that allows users to connect with Volunteer Odyssey. News about Volunteer Germantown will be shared via social media and the Germantown Municipal Television shows. Palazzolo was instrumental in connecting with Volunteer Odyssey. Six years ago, he read about founder Dr. Sarah Petschonek’s dedication to volunteerism and her efforts to develop the website. A Houston High graduate, Palazzolo phoned to congratulate her and the two met for lunch to discuss the young woman’s goals. Six years later, that meeting has led to a partnership and the creation of Volunteer Germantown. “This is about how to grow kindness and how to help people support Germantown and Memphis via volunteer opportunities,” says Petschonek, Volunteer Odyssey’s executive director. She’s been meeting with the city’s administrative staff and nonprofit leaders to explain how the website works. Petschonek also helps them understand how to post their events and manage a volunteer base from the website. "We work with nonprofits and help them make the best use of

volunteers. We teach them how to recruit volunteers through the platform, we share best practices for engaging volunteers, and show how to create high-quality volunteer experiences,” she says. The strength of Volunteer Odyssey is the details nonprofits can share about their event. For example, when you search on the website by zip code, you’ll pull up a list of activities as well as a map indicating where each event takes place. Click on the event and you can learn how long the activity lasts, how many volunteers are needed, the kind of work you’ll be doing and even the names of other volunteers. In addition to searching by zip code, you can also search by keywords that indicate the type of service: Children and Youth, Community Leadership or Education and Literacy. Some of the agencies you’ll find here include Tuesday Art Garden, Room at the Inn, Vesta Home Show, Street Ministries and Urban Bicycle Food Ministry, or click on Groups and Organizations for an alphabetized

list of all participating nonprofits. Once you’re a site member, you can even track your personal volunteer hours. Most nonprofits also track those hours, as they represent important data for grant writing. The launch of Volunteer Germantown will coincide with The Year to Volunteer, Volunteer Odyssey’s call to action for residents across Shelby County to volunteer in their communities. “We want to accrue $2 million worth of volunteer time, which is 85,000 hours,” says Petschonek. “Germantown residents, schools and corporate sponsors who volunteer will work toward that goal.” Germantown boasts more than 30 active civic organizations, 40 nonprofits and a host of churches. Palazzolo knows residents take pride in civic stewardship that’s local, regional and even global in nature. He’s hoping the new partnership will make it easier for people of all ages to contribute. Ultimately, volunteering isn’t just an act of kindness. It represents millions of dollars in manpower, getting jobs done that help to improve our communities. Brockway is posting the GMSD 5K and Color Run next, looking for many hands to help make this all-day festival not just fun, but a financial success that will raise funds and hope for the Germantown school district. • Visit VolunteerGermantown.com today and find out how you can get involved.
