After weeks, or dare I say months, of being bombarded with pre-holiday sales and décor in the stores, December is finally here. We can officially begin celebrating Christmas. This is such a joyous time of year for my family and me and for so many others. But for the Ayeni family, who adopted Memphis as their home far away from home, the holiday celebration will be extra special — with their 1-year-old twin girls who had been conjoined before the amazing medical team at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital intervened. As you can see in the photo, a few weeks ago I met and spoke with Samuel and Mary Ayeni of Nigeria, and I now have the pleasure of sharing with you their inspirational journey in “Medical Miracle in Memphis” (page 10). This year, the wonder of Christmas is also shared with the Jewish holiday, Hanukkah, beginning at sundown on Christmas Eve. I always think of my dear high-school friend, Sherie Lazar Rosenblatt, and her lovely family at this time of year as they honor their faith. Families of all types and beliefs will celebrate many wonderful traditions during this holiday season, and most likely, they will share these memories over food. With this month’s Family Table (page 8), have fun trying out a couple of recipes that are filled with the perfect ingredients for gathering with family and friends. Finally, Memphis Parent unveils the 2016 Family Choice Awards this month. You’ll find a plethora of “best of the best” that Memphis has to offer families. Call me biased, but I vote Memphis Parent for the “Best Children’s Publication” that brings you the information and fun events you want and need for your children. Enjoy!

PREP FOR JANUARY NOW How to beat the holiday “back-to-school” blues by EMILY JAMERSON Winter break should be a much-deserved time of freedom and fun after a semester of hard work. However, when January comes, it can be difficult to get kids back in action after two weeks of holiday cheer. The following tips can make the transition from holiday break to back to school a little easier. First, for all kids, even ones a little older, pick a bedtime and stick to it. Having a consistent bedtime and wake-up call will eliminate sleep-all-day grogginess once school is back in session. Small adjustments to a student’s sleep schedule can allow for later nights and not-so-early mornings while still sticking to a routine. Next, try and structure the days and weeks with activities that keep kids moving and focused on designated activities. This keeps their stamina up so that when school starts again, they are able to quickly respond to the needs of the school day. Activities for younger kids, such as cooking as a family, can support reading, math skills, and creative problem solving. For example, if you’re making cookies, say, “Ok, we ran out of chocolate chips. Now what?” Finally, having the family set goals for the holiday break can give a sense of accomplishment over the holidays that can encourage goal setting in the classroom. Try setting a family reading goal of 50-60 pages that all family members must meet by the end of the two weeks of vacation. Create a tracking chart and hang it up in the house for each member of the family to add to each time they meet their goal. Having fun while setting and achieving goals will support a child’s desire to set their own learning goals at school. The holidays are a time for rest, relaxation, and renewal, but keeping to a routine and supporting school habits can make the transition from winter break to second semester a little easier. Emily Jamerson is a freelance writer and CLUE teacher at Snowden Elementary in Memphis.

FAMILY TABLE
THE CELEBRATION STARTS WITH BREAKFAST By LIZ PHILLIPS
To this very day, if we spend Christmas with my dad, one of my kids will beg him to tell the story of his favorite Christmas present ever. When he was about 10 or 11, his parents gave him an electric griddle. It was a high-sided aluminum square with a thermostat in its handle, probably made by Sunbeam. In my dad’s family, each child could take one gift to bed with him on Christmas night. Dad snuggled with his frying pan. This story is special to me because my dad cooked our Christmas morning pancakes on that griddle. After he and my mom split up, he made breakfast on it when we had our bi-weekly visits with him in the city, but it’s the memory of those holiday mornings I cherish. For us kids, that tradition meant everything. I’m not my dad, though. While I stick to a reliable menu for our Christmas dinner, sometimes I get tired of pancakes. I make them most Sundays, and they require more kitchen fuss than I want on a day when so much else is going on. So my Christmas breakfast menu varies. This year, I asked some friends about their traditions and found some great make-ahead ideas. The two I zeroed in on complement each other — one, a slow-cooker oatmeal, is spicy-sweet; the other, a minifrittata, is savory. Best of all, each can be customized according to your family’s tastes. The winter holidays celebrate light in the darkness, the shedding of the old year to make way for the new. One of the joys of building your own family is finding the balance between continuity and invention that brings the most light to you and those you love. Breakfast is a great place to start.
SLOW-COOKER OATMEAL
You can also make this in a rice cooker, using a ratio of 2 parts liquid to 1 part oats as a starting point. Slow cookers and rice cookers vary widely, though, so no matter which cooker you use, try this at least once before the big day to get the ratios right for your cooker and preference. Serves 6 Ingredients 6 cups liquid (any combination of the following: water, milk, almond milk, coconut milk, and/or apple juice) 1.5 cup old-fashioned or steel-cut oats 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon vanilla ¼ cup-½ cup sweetener (try brown sugar, honey, or real maple syrup) 1 cup dried fruit, such as cranberries, raisins, or chopped apricots or figs, or a couple of fresh apples or pears, peeled and chopped Optional spices: 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice or any combination of ½ teaspoon each cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom plus a pinch of ground clove or allspice To serve: chopped toasted hazelnuts, pecans, walnuts, coconut, or almonds; butter and cream or half and half; additional sweetener because what the heck, it’s once a year Right before bedtime, combine all ingredients in your cooker and turn to low to cook for 8 hours. In the morning, stir well and add additional liquid if it’s too thick. Set out nuts, butter, cream, and sweetener to serve.
MINI-MUFFIN FRITTATAS
Use two 12-well mini-muffin tins, greased with a little butter or olive oil. Muffin tin sizes can vary, so fill a 2-cup liquid measuring cup with water and see how much you use to fill the wells about ¾ full. That’s how much beaten egg you’ll need. Makes 24
Ingredients 8 large eggs, beaten (or as much as needed) ¼ teaspoon salt (more or less to taste) Ground pepper to taste ¼ cup grated or crumbled cheese (parmesan, Swiss, cheddar, feta) ¼ cup chopped ham, cooked sausage, or chopped, sautéed mushrooms ½ cup chopped cooked spinach, excess liquid squeezed out (asparagus or broccoli would also be good) Preheat oven to 325. Combine eggs, salt, and pepper in liquid measuring cup. Pour egg mixture into muffin cups to fill less than halfway. Divide cheese, meat, and spinach among muffin cups. Pour remaining egg over fillings and bake for 20 minutes. Remove frittatas by prying them loose with a skewer or toothpick. Serve immediately, or refrigerate and reheat in the microwave or a warm oven before serving. They’re also nice at room temperature.

On a bright and unusually warm autumn day last month, a flurry of activity surrounded Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in midtown Memphis. Media cars lined up near Poplar and Dunlap as journalists crowded into the hospital’s auditorium to hear what a team of doctors had to say about the lifealtering surgery of separating conjoined twins, Miracle and Testimony Ayeni, just a week earlier. “This surgery gives them the opportunity to lead independent lives,” said Dr. Max Langham, who led the surgical team. “Le Bonheur's medical team is like no other I have worked with throughout my medical career. To flawlessly execute an 18-hour surgery with this level of coordination proves we have some of the best physicians and surgeons in the world.”

MEDICAL MIRACLE IN MEMPHIS
Faith in Action
A
Along with a team of more than 120 surgeons, physicians, nurses, therapists, and other staff who were involved in the care of Miracle and Testimony, their parents Samuel and Mary Ayeni also had another major factor in the surgery of their daughters — their faith. The Ayenis are devout Christians who boldly and with fervor share testimony of how their faith in God has not only sustained them but also strengthened them to deal with the emotional rollercoaster they’ve been on since learning their twins would be conjoined at the pelvis, sharing some internal organs but having separate legs. Only about 6 percent of conjoined twins are connected in this manner. “When you give everything to God and believe, he will give you peace,” said dad, Samuel. “I have the faith that He is helping us, and we are giving all of this to Him.” Long after the TV cameras and most of the other media left the news conference, I lingered, just marveling at these two parents. As I spoke to the social work director who coordinated placing the Ayeni family in the FedEx Family House with the twins and Marvelous, their 3-year-old daughter, Mary walked up and we began talking mother to mother. Tears welled in her eyes as she began to tell me how some people in their native country of Nigeria had spoken of her baby girls. “They told me that I should abandon them on the street,” she said. “And one person even told me that I should take them to a museum. They thought they were some kind of monsters. But I thank God that He blessed me to be their mother.” The journey of these twins and their parents is nothing short of a miracle. Two months after they were born, a nonprofit in Nigeria, the Linking Hands Foundation, reached out to a surgeon at Le Bonheur — Dr. Ben Gbulie, who is also a native of Nigeria. After consulting with a team of surgeons to see if this complex surgery could be successful, Le Bonheur president and CEO then signed off on it. Le Bonheur and silent heroes in the Memphis community covered the cost of transporting the Ayenis to the United States, support and housing in Memphis, and the surgery. “I can’t begin to express my joy,” Mary said. “We know nobody, but we know God. People I don’t even know are blessing us. Memphis is helping my kids.” Meri Armour, Le Bonheur president and CEO, said, “I have met and grown to love this beautiful family and am moved to tears that our surgeons and doctors have given their girls a new lease on life.” The girls, who doctors said were remarkably healthy prior to the surgery, are getting stronger each day. In fact, the same day the news of the successful procedure became public, the twins celebrated their first birthday. Armour called the news conference, “the testimony of a miracle,” playing off the girls’ first names and the faith of the family that doctors say gave them strength as well. Miracle, who has always been the heartier eater of the two girls actually ate some of her cake while Testimony, who is described as more quiet, loves to snuggle. Now the girls will focus on just becoming like any other toddler as they recover and receive rehabilitation therapy to learn to walk before returning with their family to Nigeria. Before we parted ways, Mary wanted to thank the city and the people, especially at the hospital. “Here at Le Bonheur, children’s lives really do matter. I am grateful to God for all of you.”
