WELCOME Welcome to the “Top of Mississippi.” Southaven is the third-largest city in the state, and now home to the Memphis Grizzlies’ new development league – the Memphis Hustle. We are also home to the Mississippi RiverKings hockey team and the Dizzy Dean Baseball World Series. Darren Musselwhite Mayor
There’s so much to do and to see here. We put a high value on quality of life in our hometown. Southaven is one of the fastestgrowing cities in Mississippi, and we have made every effort to continue that growth and to prosper while maintaining quality of life and safety for our residents. We take great pride in our beautiful neighborhoods and the affordable housing here. Geographically, Southaven is located within a day’s drive of 50 percent of the U.S. population and within three hours driving distance from six different states. It is the northern gateway to Mississippi and strategically located near I-269 and I-55. We take pride in the fact many people from all over come to visit us and enjoy the amenities offered in Southaven. The DeSoto County School system, one of the best in the state, is devoted to academic excellence while offering a variety of extra-curricular programs for students. Southaven is home to two high schools, Southaven High and DeSoto Central High. We also have several elementary, intermediate, and middle schools devoted to a quality experience. We’re serious about our education, but we know how to play, too. While the Memphis Hustle began playing its basketball games in the fall of 2017 at the Landers Center, the City of Southaven was already home to the renowned Snowden Grove Baseball Complex, where the Dizzy Dean World Series, the NABF World Series, the USSSA World Series, and numerous competitive baseball tournaments and recreational baseball games are played. Snowden Grove, a 17-field facility that possesses features previously only found at professional stadiums, is just one of the many community parks and recreational places to enjoy here. We are extremely proud of the recent improvements and enhancements to the city’s park system including an outstanding 8-court expansion of our Snowden Grove Tennis Complex. Our Senior Center at Snowden Grove is a source of pride, too. As a Certified Retirement Community by Hometown Mississippi Retirement, the state’s official retiree attraction program, we acknowledge that part of enjoying retirement is taking full advantage of what our city has to offer in terms of living an active, affordable, healthy, and secure life. Our facility serves
as the home for our city’s Forever Young Senior Citizen Program. One of the Mid-South’s premier outdoor venues is right here in Southaven. The BankPlus Amphitheater already has hosted some of the biggest acts in the entertainment industry, including Chris Stapleton, Dave Matthews Band, Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 2018, we will celebrate the amphitheater’s 13th anniversary and expect the best entertainment lineup in the facility’s history. Each year at our Springfest celebration at Snowden Grove Park, dozens of barbecue teams compete for the Mississippi State Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, an event sanctioned by the Memphis Barbecue Network and the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Springfest includes a spectacular carnival midway, games, live concerts, great concessions, and more. The five-day event attracts an estimated 35,000 people each year. Still fairly new to our city is Tanger Outlet Shops, a development by Tanger Outlet Centers. This mall is an upscale, destination-style shopping center that includes 75 stores occupying approximately 310,000 square feet of retail space. It is one of the highest-quality developments in the history of Southaven, and is creating a resurgence of economic development in the Church Road corridor, thus adding to the quality of life and financial strength of our great city. Southaven has become a better place to live by improving our quality of life and economic attractiveness, thus leading to quality economic growth and ongoing financial stability. I believe in aggressive infrastructure improvement, revitalization of our original business district, citywide beautification, and parks and recreational enhancement, all the while maintaining the utmost priority in public safety. Southaven is our home, where leadership, vision, and dedication are essential in promoting economic success and quality of life. I hope you have an opportunity to visit and enjoy the countless amenities we have to offer. It is my sincere honor to serve as Mayor. Please feel free to contact me if I can ever be of assistance. 5

GOVERNMENT Southaven’s government is strategic in its thinking, implementing many innovative policies including the utilization of the parks and recreation system as an economic development tool. The city has long been recognized as a regional leader in economic and community development. The future remains bright for continued growth and prosperity.
As a full-service city, Southaven provides public services such as police and fire protection, EMS/ambulatory services, code enforcement, sanitation collection, household recycling, planning and zoning services and parks and recreational services. Southaven maintains low property taxes while prioritizing public safety and dedicating more than half of its budget to it. Although a city of about 54,000 people, Southaven retains a lean municipal workforce of about 400 full-time employees, the majority of them dedicated police and fire officers and staff. With an eye for infrastructure improvement, the city completed several projects recently, including an extension of
Rasco Road and the widening of Getwell Road. The resurfacing of Church Road and Starlanding Road is underway at this writing, as is the Carriage Hills pedestrian project. In fact, the city recently adopted its first formal plan for bike and pedestrian pathways to enhance connectivity among the city’s parks and bolster quality of life. The city received the Planning and Economic Development Award for Excellence from the Mississippi Municipal League Organization at the annual conference held in Biloxi last year. Southaven’s city government is here to serve you in a professional and efficient manner. Feel free to call upon us.

privacy that motivated his purchase of a 43-acre ranch decades ago in rural Nesbit, south of Memphis. The Lewis family opened the ranch for tours in April. At 1595 Malone, the ranch became part of the local consciousness several years after Lewis became famous. Reared in Ferriday, Louisiana, Lewis arrived in Memphis in 1956 to audition for Sun Records. His debut single, “Crazy Arm,” became part of a recorded jam session at Sun Records Studio called the “Million Dollar Quartet” that also involved Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins. Lewis is the last living person of the four. “All those guys ... we were real close friends,” Lewis said from a wing chair in his living room. “I never imagined them dying and leaving.” Lewis lived in Coro Lake in South Memphis and bought the ranch site for cash. “It is home,” he said. “Just over the years, we had a great time.” The $30 per person tickets for tours may be Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” which propelled him into purchased at thelewisranch.com/tours. worldwide fame, “I end up working again. “The Killer” settles down
Wearing white, pull-on deck shoes and a matching gray jacket and slacks, Jerry Lee Lewis stepped into his Southaven living room gripping the duck-head top of a gold-tipped cane.
He spends his days relaxing — watching Gunsmoke reruns on television, cruising incognito into Sonic for a burger, and playing with his two young grandchildren. The singer, songwriter and musician dubbed “The Killer” otherwise defies the stereotypical definition of being retired. At 82, he still performs, raking nimble fingers over a keyboard. He may even kick over the piano bench for an amusing finale. “Every time I try to retire,” said Lewis, who helped invent rock n’ roll with songs like “Whole 16

a collage of photographs of the couple rested above the keyboard. They were married in 2012. “I didn’t think he’d ever leave the ranch,” Judith Lewis said, “but he’s here — making new memories.” Lewis held an estate sale in 2016 and talked of opening the ranch for tours. Turning the place into a museum has been a dream of his. Lewis wanted to be close to the amenities of a city in his later years. He specifically mentioned Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, 14 minutes away, and then listed other destinations. “Grocery store. Drug store. Everything is in driving distance,” he said. “I needed a place like this — close to everything.” An added bonus is being able to hear the concerts at BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove from the back porch. There’s also a great view of the Independence Day fireworks. Incredibly, Lewis is not often recognized in Southaven. He personally picked out an electric fireplace at Lowes this past fall. By coincidence, there weren’t any customers in the store and “the man who helped us — he never knew,” Judith Lewis said. “They usually find out later.” He’s far from forgotten, however. Fans cobble over the community’s gates from time to time and jaunt up to Lewis’ porch. The doorbell isn’t answered. Lewis is busy relaxing, a retirement pastime, and even before a performance, he insisted he is not busy getting ready. His parents bought him his first piano when he was 8, and he’s been in the public eye 61 years. “The only preparation I make is to make it to the piano,” Lewis said. “Getting to the piano isn’t quite as easy as it used to be.” “Then,” said his wife Judith, “he’s 30 again.”

interrupt people coming in, but I was out there the other day. I met some people from Virginia. My fans are some of the greatest people in the world. Very devoted.” Lewis and his wife selected a community near Snowden Grove Park that is marketed to people 55 years and older. They bought two lots and built a one-story, 2,500-squarefoot home with one guest room — they don’t often entertain overnight visitors — and a staircase to the second floor whose handrail is decorated with musical notes. The foyer, lighted by an intricate glass chandelier, leads to a grandfather clock that intersects the living room and kitchen. The house is by no means ostentatious, especially considering its famous resident. Lewis left his Rolls Royce, his gold records, his gun collection, and much of his musical memorabilia at the ranch. Gesturing at the bookcases along the living room, Lewis’ wife said, “This is our private stuff.” Southaven is within easy driving distance to the ranch and within reach of hundreds of amenities for the Lewises. The city, full of restaurants, medical providers and retail stores, is certified by the American Association of Retirement Communities. According to the executive director of the Southaven Chamber of Commerce, Carmen Kyle, the city offers an active lifestyle for retirees, a temperate climate, attractive tax benefits, medical facilities and housing suited for seniors of every ability. Judith Lewis seated herself on a plump couch next to her husband. Behind the couch rested the family collection of Russian nesting dolls. Framed photographs of the musician with President Ronald Reagan and with Paul McCartney of Beatles fame sat perched on the fireplace mantel. One of Lewis’ pianos took up the spot in what would be a dining room in other homes, near the kitchen. Instead of sheet music,

The number of credits earned in a year by DeSoto County Schools students nearly doubled during the 2016-2017 school year to 1,004. “It’s something very important to me,” said DeSoto County Schools Superintendent Cory Uselton, who as a high school principal saw college-bound students search for ways to get ahead. “I wanted them to know we’d done all we could to prepare them. It gives them a head start.” The credits are offered in partnership with Northwest Mississippi Community College but may be transferrable to other colleges. Students can take courses at a Northwest campus, at their high school, and now online. A course typically costs $50 – hugely less than a traditional class. “Dual enrollment classes are a great opportunity for students to get ahead on their college career,” said Jeremy Isome,
dean of NWCC’s DeSoto Center. “We are very proud to be able to continue to serve as the foundation of higher education in DeSoto County.” While offering dual-credit isn’t unique to high schools nationwide, it is gaining in popularity. This past fall, NWCC recorded 989 dual-enrollment students taking courses through 25 high schools across eight counties in Northwest Mississippi. Two years earlier, only 547 students were enrolled through 17 schools in seven counties. “Education is changing,” Uselton said. “Many students are taking online courses already. We want to be ahead of the curve, make sure our students are trendsetters.” At Southaven High School, dual-credit participation grows each year, said principal Shane Jones. More than 160 of his students participated during the 2017 fall semester alone. In previous years, he’s seen students leave with 12 hours of credit, but now the school offers up to 20 hours. He believes dual-credit courses help stu-
dents on the fence about going to college take the step. They get a taste of college and discover they’re able to do the work required. “It’s a great situation for a lot of our students,” said Jones, a former Southaven High student. “I wish these opportunities had existed when I graduated 20 years ago.” Jim Ferguson, President of Northpoint Christian School, a college preparatory school in Southaven, agrees that the dualcredit courses serve as a proving ground. “It proves to students they can do college-level work, which hopefully will encourage them to continue their education,” he said. “And the cost is certainly a benefit.” Only high school juniors and seniors are eligible for the dual-credit courses. No ACT composite score is required; however, some courses require certain subscores on the ACT. For example, English Composition I requires a 17 subscore on the English portion of the ACT, according to Dr. Suzanne Strehle, dual-enrollment coordinator at NWCC. Dual- credit courses of fered include college algebra, trigonometry, music appreciation and American history. Cliff Johnston, principal at DeSoto Central High School in Southaven, sees students pushing themselves harder due to the dualcredit enrollment requirements. They end up achieving at a higher-level overall due to the effort. Dual-credit courses help students improve their ACT scores, which helps get them get better scholarships, Johnston said. Because of the success of these courses, he hopes to add more dual-enrollment courses in the future.

PASTOR CHAD EVERSON, TRINITY CHURCH WITH PASTOR RICK SAYGER, COLONIAL HILLS CHURCH.
FAITH FOCUSED Southaven is a city brimming with faith. That is never more evident than when the faithful roll up their sleeves and get to work on meeting people’s tangible needs. While the city is home to some 100 houses of worship, two churches stand as testaments to the servant heart of the city — Trinity Church and Colonial Hills Church. These two congregations welcome people from all over Southaven to their doors, but they consider themselves neighborhood churches and focus on meeting the needs of people in their figurative backyards, an older section of the city where Southaven put its first footprints. Trinity wasn’t always outward in its focus, said its pastor, Chad Everson. The catalyst for change was a question. “Four years ago we asked ourselves if Trinity didn’t exist, would DeSoto County know it, and the answer was no.” The choice seemed clear — disband or reach out. The church sold its building and moved to 2101 Colonial Hills Drive. The congregation created partnerships with schools, such
as nearby Hope Sullivan Elementar y, to mentor students and provide pop-top meals that teachers slip into the backpacks of needy, hungry kids. They put on “Affordable Christmas,” tables of deeply discounted toys, and gave additional deductions to parents who agreed to financial training classes. They opened their gym each Thursday night to neighborhood youth for basketball, and they began brainstorming with community leaders to tackle issues that faced the poorest citizens. One of those issues is transportation — workers being able to reach the many jobs the area offers. An alliance of churches and, the DeSoto Economic Council is in the “very early preliminary stages” of coming up with a remedy, perhaps provisioning vans for pick-up and drop-off points, Everson said. “We believe everyone is created in the image of God, and everyone brings specific gifts, but gifts that can be easily overlooked.
That’s the beauty of the gospel,” Everson said. “It brings people together from various walks of life, incomes, jobs, races, and knocks down barriers.” Only a three-minute drive apart, Trinity and Colonial Hills partner occasionally to put on events. Colonial Hills Church, at 7701 Highway 51 North, hosted a joint job fair, where nearly 400 people talked with human resources representatives. Another event Colonial Hills hosted and partnered with other churches was for Easter. Families got together at the church for fun like inflatables and face painting. “We want to develop a good relationship with other churches,” said Rick Sayger, lead pastor at Colonial. “We’re not in competition. Our styles may be different, but we’re all following Christ.” Colonial Hills also works in the school system, opening its facilities for teacher training programs and graduations. At a fall festival, thousands reportedly attended for old-fashioned games like cake walks and ate hot dogs smothered in mustard. Colonial Hills also has been through its own epiphany. “The Lord reminded us they’re not here for us,” Sayger said of the neighbors, “we’re here for them. That’s what’s great about being in a church. Serving people. It’s fun.”

SERVE SOUTHAVEN Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite’s goal was to create a central place to connect the resources of citizens to the unmet needs of other people in the city. He knew his hometown was full of good-hearted folks, but even he was surprised by the response. “The calls that would come to the mayor’s office — people asking for help. I felt like the city had a great need for this,” the mayor said. “I admit I was amazed by the number of people who wanted to help.” Serve Southaven has been in operation now for about four years. If you’ve got a downed tree, a sagging porch, or maybe an enormous electric bill and no way to pay, Serve Southaven may find someone with a chainsaw, a hammer, or an open wallet. “The water department called me one day about a citizen, so I reached out to a church, and they stepped in and paid this lady’s water bill,” said Tracy Gallagher, Serve Southaven’s
director. “A lot of times it’s an elderly person who needs help. One lady … had a son who was in a wheelchair. She just didn’t have the resources. It was after the storm. Southern Baptist Disaster Recovery took a tree down for her.” City employees receive most of the calls about needs, needs which they know can’t be fixed using taxpayer dollars. Gallagher usually targets a particular person to fill the need — someone on the list — but she may send out an email blast to 50 addresses. The five areas that Serve Southaven focuses on are beautification, emergency aid, food distribution, youth interaction, and
elderly and special needs. An individual or organization always steps up to help. Gallagher has tapped Heartland Hands food pantry to supply meals, DeSoto Grace for tutoring, and repeatedly turned to Southern Baptist Disaster Recovery to pull debris from structures after violent storms. Gallagher identifies with the willingness to help. The wife of an alderman, she has always been involved in charity work, including Apelah, which provides foster care for special needs children in DeSoto County. Said Gallagher: “I feel like it’s my calling to help those in need because I’ve been given so much.” To c o n t a c t S e r ve S o u t h ave n , s e n d Gallagher an email at serve@southaven.org.

DR. PHYLLIS CHAMBERS, BAPTIST HOSPITAL DESOTO
GROWING WITH THE CITY Baptist Hospital-DeSoto is expanding.
DeSoto County’s largest hospital, situated in Southaven’s busiest corridors, is responding to an ever-growing demand for toprate medical care with its fourth and largest expansion ever.
The $20 million project to enlarge and renovate the emergency room at Baptist Hospital-Desoto is expected to be completed this fall. The improvements include additional patient rooms, expansion of the waiting room, and measures that will improve the patient experience. Baptist-DeSoto — which meets the American College of Cardiologist’s guidelines in every metric for patients 98.4 percent of the time — puts a premium on the emergency room experience. That’s in part because an emergency room visit is likely to be the first point of contact with the hospital. “The emergency room, generally, in any community, is a first-time visit for most people. That makes it very important,” said Dr. Phyllis Chambers, director of emergency services and nursing support services. “We can make or break … how patients trust providers.” The emergency department also is important because about 85 percent of Baptist-DeSoto’s admissions come through the emergency room, rather than from a doctor’s office. That’s way above the national average of 28 percent. According to Chambers, that’s reflective of a larger number of people who don’t have primary care physicians as their go-to provider.

DR. PHYLLIS CHAMBERS, BAPTIST HOSPITAL DESOTO
In one 12-month period alone, the hospital emergency room saw almost 7,000 more patients than the previous year. Officials recorded 66,841 visits in fiscal year 2017, compared with the prior fiscal year when 60,590 people visited the emergency room. Of the approximately 188 patients a day who go to the emergency room, about 41 patients are admitted, Chambers said. The emergency department expansion was necessary to accommodate growth in visits, which correspond with the population growth of Southaven and DeSoto County. Baptist-DeSoto began evaluating the increase in volume at the emergency department in 2008, according to its CEO James Huffman. Officials thought the 2013 opening of the county’s second hospital, Methodist Olive Branch Hospital, might curb trending growth at Baptist-DeSoto, but it did not. Two years later, the hospital engaged a consultant to assess the needs and trending population growth in the northwest Mississippi communities it serves. The “up and out” expansion, which will increase the footprint of the emergency room to 20,000 square feet, will be completed first. Medical personel will vacate their current workspace and move into the new digs while the renovation portion of the project is completed. Hospital officials project visits to the emergency department to grow to 67,000 patients-plus this fiscal year while the project is taking place. The time between arrival and discharge, routinely below three hours and 15 minutes, is already better than last year. Officials expect the expansion and renovation to further slice minutes off the wait, Dr. Chambers said, in addition to improving overall care.
Work to expand and renovate the emergency department began last March. The expansion and renovation will include these improvements: • Addition of 20 patient rooms, bringing the total emergency room beds to 55. A redesign of rooms will provide space for family members on one side of the bed and medical personnel and equipment on the other. All the rooms will get a fresh coat of paint. • The addition of more “intake chairs” for new arrivals, and three more triage rooms, giving the hospital the capacity to respond more quickly to arriving patients. • EKG monitoring equipment with new scanning technology will be placed in a centralized location for greater timeliness in responding to chest pain complaints. CT rooms, often used for stroke patients, also will move to the center of the emergency department to improve turnaround times. • Provide all-inclusive hemodynamic monitoring, which evaluates how well the heart is working, in the emergency room. Even if an ICU bed isn’t available, patients will be able to receive the same monitoring in the emergency room while they wait for an empty bed. • A room for paramedics will be added and provisioned with snacks and Gatorade. The paramedics may complete required paperwork from this site.

What is your line of work? We are a wellness clinic specializing in weight loss and hormone replacement treatment. We provide individualized body analyses, which may include EKG and blood tests, and provide comprehensive diet counseling. We prescribe diet medications or natural supplements deemed best for each individual patient. We also offer vitamin B-12 and Lipo B-Complex injections, and testosterone replacement therapy for men. We can do any kind of lab testing requested by our patients.
population and in the community in general. At first, I used an endoscopic way to achieve weight loss for patients, but then I realized that in this area, that’s an expensive procedure. A lot of people are not able to afford that, so I broadened my horizons.
Tell me about your team. I am a physician who’s been practicing gastroenterology in the Mid-South for more than 20 years. I also employ an advanced nurse practitioner, Ashley Falkner, FNP, a diet counselor, Terri Gallardo, and a couple of part-time medical assistants.
Why did you choose Southaven for your business? I opened my weight loss practice in August. I chose to establish a weight loss clinic in this area when my patients told me that they had to travel for 20 to 30 miles to go to weight-loss clinics in Tennessee. The city is centralized, and a lot of people from the surrounding area, such as Holly Springs, Byhalia and Horn Lake, look to Southaven for a lot of their needs in terms of their medical care. From my standpoint, the doctors that practice in Southaven have more of a personalized approach to patients, not like a big city. This place still has a small-town feel to it.
How did you get into this line of work? As a gastroenterologist, I often saw people who were struggling with obesity and the effects of the obesity epidemic. Because of the obesity, they had a lot of gastro-intestinal issues. I recognized the need for proper weight-loss counseling and treatment in a significant percentage of my patient
What do business owners considering a move to Southaven need to know? Southaven is a growing and flourishing area. It attracts a lot of clients from surrounding towns. And the Chamber of Commerce is very welcoming and helpful to new business owners.

State Farm Insurance
Ryan T. England Agency, LLC 1055 Church Road East, Southaven 662-349-1550 What is your line of work? The short answer—I’m a State Farm agent. The longer and more accurate answer—I’m a risk management advisor who helps our community manage the risks of everyday life, recover from the unexpected and realize their dreams. Tell me about your team. I have three full-time sales professionals who expand our services, and I have two full-time client-care professionals who meet the needs of our existing book of business. Additionally, I have two part-time team members who assist with client-care duties, marketing, etc. How did you get into this line of work? We have been serving the Southaven community for about 8 ½ years. I became interested in State Farm when I began dating my wife, Betsy. Her father is a 40-year State Farm agent in Grenada, Miss., where I grew up. I was in medical device sales at that time, and I learned about State Farm’s business model from him. What are the benefits of doing business in Southaven? Southaven is the perfect combination of a small-town feel with big growth opportunities. When I targeted State Farm as a career change, I felt Southaven was the best fit for my personality and my family. I
had already forged relationships through the Southaven Chamber of Commerce, and I felt business ownership in this area would be a great opportunity for me. What advice would you give to business owners considering a move to Southaven? With several civic, charitable and community organizations in existence, there’s ample opportunity to meet business owners and professionals and network with them. Those types of activities single-handedly helped get my business off the ground in a grassroots way that have paid dividends and established relationships I still enjoy today. What’s something interesting people should know about your business? The media has done a horrible job of “commoditizing” the insurance industry. Car insurance in particular has been painted in the same light as choosing a can of green beans at the grocery—as in, “they’re all the same, just pick one”—which ultimately drives consumers to choose the cheapest option. This could not be farther from the truth, and if you’ve never been educated on how your insurance policies really work, you should take the time to do so before you need to use the policy. 27

SPECIAL ADVERTORIAL SECTION
310 State Line Road West (662) 393-2646 Tell me about your business. What products and services do you offer? We are an 8,000-square-foot antique mall with all kinds of unique antiques and collectibles as well as furniture, glassware, coins, stamps, records, toys and home décor. We focus on mid-century antiques and vintage. We carry a variety of Victrola phonographs and offer some repair to clocks. We sell parts for both, too. We also sell storage buildings that can be used as utility sheds or as portable offices. How many people do you employ? Four of our dealers put in time at the store, and we have approximately 20 dealers who have booth space that acquire merchandise for the shop. Most of our dealers have been in the business for at least six years. How did you get into this line of work? I was always interested in buying and selling. We started out on eBay and sold things on the site for about four years.
We started to sell on a bigger scale and eventually met people who had a booth at the antique store that used to be at our site, and that got us thinking about opening our own physical business. We opened Southaven Antiques approximately four years ago in the West End district of Southaven. The city and Chamber were really helpful in the startup. Why did you choose Southaven for your business? We love Southaven! The people are just awesome, and we love our convenient location off Interstate 55 and west of Airways Boulevard. At the “top of Mississippi,” we’re easy to find by people coming from Tennessee and Arkansas, too. Why did you choose the West End? The West End is growing and undergoing great and exciting changes both within and around the district. We’ve seen a lot of changes, vacant buildings with new businesses and cosmetic improvements. There’s new life here.

$8,000 that first year. It felt like a great accomplishment. To date, we’ve helped raise more than $10 million. Somewhere along the line, schools, teams, businesses and churches started asking us to design and print shirts for other things, too. Although they weren’t fund-raising specific, we found out having those year around, consistent clients gave us a financial base. So, in 2016 we made it official and created 52 Threads.
Tell us about your team. We’ve got a full-time staff of 20 people. Sixteen of them live right here in Desoto County, and four of them work remotely from Montana, Oklahoma, Nashville and North Carolina. Our team is primarily made up of customer service and graphic designers with a few other positions such as a financial director and office manager.
What are the benefits of doing business in Southaven? We like to say we’re globally-focused but Desoto-County based. We ship across the country daily, but we have a lot of local clients we love serving. We’ve loved being in the center of Southaven. It’s central to so many things, and having a very active chamber that constantly pushes us towards new and potential relationships is so encouraging.
How did you get into this line of work? I was working full time at Trinity Baptist Church in Southaven in 2008. I loved my job but also wanted to do something on the side to help people around the world. So I started this website to help people fundraise by designing t-shirts for them to sell. We helped raise

HUSTLE HARD
Basketball fans get a top-notch, intimate experience in Southaven with the Memphis Hustle, the minorleague affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies that began its inaugural season in November 2017.
The Hustle scheduled 24 home games this season at Landers Center, a site that gives Southaven and the surrounding area greater access to professional basketball. The Grizzlies play about 15 miles away in downtown Memphis at the FedExForum, a huge venue. By comparison, Landers offers a more personal experience, and a less costly one. Hustle tickets start at $10 apiece, and the most affordable season ticket price at $192 for the year. “A lot more accessible for a premium experience,” said Jason Wexler, president of business operations for the Memphis Grizzlies, speaking at a Southaven Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Wexler, giving his first Hustle presentation to a crowd this past fall, called the reception the new team received in Southaven “phenomenal.” The Hustle is part of the NBA Gatorade League, or G-League, previously branded the NBA Development League. The league has 26 teams and includes players who aim to prove they deserve a shot in the NBA. In fact, 44 percent of current NBA players have G-League experience, Wexler said. Memphis Hustle players practice at the FedExForum. They have separate locker rooms from the Grizzlies but share training facilities like a weight room. Calling the Grizzlies a “first-class organization,” Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite found it easy to offer assistance to the Hustle to help the team prosper here. “Professional sports are a significant part of our American culture,” Musselwhite said, “and we are happy to have the entertainment value added to our city by the Hustle.” The Hustle name is a byproduct of the Grizzlies culture. It’s related to the Grizzlies branding of “grit.” “You got to hustle down the court,” Wexler said. “You got to hustle down the field.” The Hustle red is intended to be a tribute to sports 30

“Fans are really a part of the experience, not just observers” franchises like the Chicks and Showboats that played in Memphis and regional teams like the Redbirds and Ole Miss with red prominent in their branding. The Hustle plays in red basketball jerseys trimmed in white. Wexler called the Hustle a regional team. After all, marketing for the Grizzlies spans 150 miles from the arena, Wexler said, and includes parts of Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Alabama. An additional part of the team’s personality is community involvement, just like the Grizzlies, one of only four teams named as finalists for the third annual Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year Award in 2017. “We’re just super engaged,” Wexler said. “It’s part of our identity.” The engagement starts on the court. Memphis Hustle invites even its youngest fans to an intimate experience at Landers Center. Inflatables are at the end court, and kids are able to access players for autographs, Wexler said. “Fans are really a part of the experience, not just observers,” he said. Robert Creech is looking forward to the impact the Hustle will have on Southaven and the surrounding community. A basketball fan and owner of the DeSoto Athletic Club, Creech is one of the Hustle’s local sponsors. The DAC’s logo is featured on the basketball court, on LED screens and on back of game promotion T-shirts. “The Grizzlies have been a wonderful community partner for the city of Memphis and its surrounding areas. The Hustle, being an affiliate of the Grizzlies franchise, will do the same for DeSoto County,” Creech said. “Even prior to this season’s start, the Hustle has been vigilant in the community, hosting youth basketball camps and other activities.” Personally, Creech relied on the reputation of the Grizzlies in looking forward to seeing in Southaven “some high-quality basketball without having to make the drive to Memphis … I know the game night experience is an entertaining one similar to what the fans experience at a Grizzlies home game. And the fans will notice a more intimate game night experience with the (smaller) seating capacity in the Landers Center.” A multipurpose arena near Pepper Chase Drive and Interstate 55, the 8,400-seat Landers Center was constructed in 2000. It also is home to the Mississippi RiverKings professional hockey team. The Grizzlies’ Wexler said the Landers Center “stood out” when the company went looking for a Hustle home. Officials unveiled the Memphis Hustle name on June 1. The 2017-18 season at L anders Center continues through March. To purchase Hustle tickets, visit.landerscenter.com or memphishustle.com. 3131

Of course, basketball fans may double-dip and take a quick, 15-minute drive to see the Grizzlies at the FedExForum in downtown Memphis. Get familiar with downtown while you’re there and return in April to see the Memphis Redbirds, a minor league baseball team, play in AutoZone Park. As for concerts, the Landers Center will host Jon Pardi this year. The country music singer and song writer’s hits include “Heartache on the Dance Floor” and “Head over Boots.” His concert is set for April 20. The 161-year-old Mid-South Fair, moved from Memphis several years ago, is held every year at Landers Center. Carnival rides, food vendors and games stretch across the curvy lot each fall. DeSoto Family Theatre, dedicated to pro-
ducing positive, uplifting and wholesome entertainment, performs at Landers. Among the upcoming productions is Disney’s Aladdin Jr., “filled with romance and adventure.” Its 2018-2019 season will include The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and Peter Pan. For a more energetic way to spend down time, consider escape rooms, an immersive game-play venue in themed rooms that encourages team building to solve puzzles, codes and locks. Though designed for all ages, Millennials may find Escape Rooms especially engaging as they abandon their smart phones (they’re allowed, but the technology won’t help them get out) to solve puzzles using their wits and social interaction. An altogether different game venue resides in Tunica, about a 40-minute drive southwest of Southaven. Horseshoe Tunica Hotel & Casino, Gold Strike Casino Resort, Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall offer card games, slot machines and other games of chance - and the lure of winning big money. If music is your thing, turn around and head north, to Beale Street, “Home of the Blues.” This downtown Memphis street is packed with clubs like the Jerry Lee Lewis Café & Honky Tonk, Hard Rock Café and Alfred’s Bar & Grill. On March 17th, slip into something green and enjoy the 45th annual Silky O’Sullivan Beale Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The public event is free. Arguably the Mid-South’s most famous musician, Elvis Presley still draws fans to his home, Graceland, 40 years after his death. His home, open for tours, is less than 10 minutes from Southaven.

All ages will find a spot to spend their down time in and around this city of 54,000 people. One of the city’s favorite places for play is the Snowden Grove complex that hosts sporting events, concerts, festivals and 4th of July fireworks. Some of the biggest acts in the business, including Matchbox 20 and Journey, entertained at BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove last year. With 4,000 fixed seats and additional capacity of up to 7,000 people on a sloped, trimmed lawn, the amphitheater provides optimal comfort and viewing for concert goers. Known for its baseball and the Dizzy Dean World Series held each summer, Snowden Grove Park also hosts other sports games for residents to enjoy and an annual festival, Springfest. Dozens of barbecue teams compete at the festival for a championship title. The five-day festival that includes a carnival, games and concessions attracts an estimated 35,000 each year. The Landers Center also is an entertainment hub with sports, concerts, theater and an annual fair. At the 8,400-seat Landers Center, two professional sports teams delight fans with game-day energy. The Mississippi RiverKings, a professional minor league ice hockey team, kicked off its latest season in October. Games continue through April. The Mid-South’s newest professional sports team, the Memphis Hustle, launched its inaugural season in November at Landers. VETERANS PARK Southaven is honored to be home to the newly constructed DeSoto County Veterans Park. This park serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our veterans.
Honoring veterans living and dead no matter the war or conflict, the park sits on four acres near Landers Center off Interstate 55 and Church Road. The address is 4560 Venture Drive for GPS users. Once an overgrown piece of property with a pond and simple pathway, the park has been transformed with asphalt that meets the approval of the Americans with Disabilities Act. It winds past bronze markers recognizing American clashes dating from the Revolutionary War to present. “They gave us the country we now have, and we need to honor that,” said Diane Moore, secretary of DeSoto Veterans Park Association, Inc. She and her husband, R.G., conceived the idea of a park honoring veterans. Between the couple, they count 18 relatives who’ve been in the military. R.G. Moore served in the Marines during the Vietnam era and is vice president of the association that oversees the park. Several local businesses, individuals, organizations and the county and city governments contributed to the making of the park. After preparations that included winning permission from the DeSoto County Convention & Visitors Bureau, construction took about eight months. The opening ceremony in October was well attended by local veterans. After entering under an archway that identifies the park and says “For God and Country,” visitors read about the various conflicts and wars that included American military. The first of the markers, headlined “The

studies at Mississippi State University, he returned to Southaven, his hometown. With the help of prosthetics, he lives a very active life. In 2009, Brooks ran for the Ward 4 alderman office of the city and won. “I went from serving my country to serving my community,” he said. Brooks currently represents the whole city as an atlarge alderman and works for Congressman Trent Kelly as the Veterans Outreach Coordinator in the Hernando office.
Ultimate Sacrifice,” was dedicated “to the men and women who answered the call to serve our country” and died in performance of their duty. The contributions of veterans who served during the Cold War and covert operations are included, and even service animals who served in wars aren’t unnoticed, Diane Moore said. Obscure clashes that occurred in places like Lebanon, Kosovo and the Caribbean region are a part of the park, too. “We included everything,” Moore said. “Any conflict. They fought for our country.” A number of flags flutter over the park, including one honoring veterans who were or are prisoners of war and missing in action. They provide yet another point to reflect on the sacrifices of soldiers. Moore envisions whole families visiting the park, picnicking at tables and discussing the lives and service of veterans both known and unknown. William Brooks, president of the DeSoto Veterans Park Association board, attended the opening ceremony along with a couple hundred people. Now an alderman, Brooks had been in Iraq only three months in 2005 when he was injured. He was in a convoy near Baghdad when an IED, or roadside bomb, blasted through his vehicle. He lost both his legs above the knee. As a 22-year-old political science major who served in the Mississippi National Guard, he had thought of surviving being called into battle and of dying in battle, but never of living with a severe injury. While recovering for more than a year at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, Brooks “got the bug” for politics. After finishing his
As much as he gave, Brooks thinks of the veterans his brigade lost, 28 lives in all, and feels fortunate. He reflected on their sacrifice at the park opening. “It’s important to recognize even those who served when there was no war going on,” he said. “They raised their hand.” Specific veterans also are honored at the park. Bricks with the name of veterans are being installed in a Walk of Honor. More than 200 bricks already have been laid, and there is room for 1,000. Anyone may purchase a brick and get it inscribed for $125. Visit desotocountyveteranspark.com to purchase one or to learn more about the park.

STAY FIT! HAVE FUN!

Southaven has a multitude of parks and recreational centers for all sorts of activities.
There’s another game in town. Known for its baseball and the Dizzy Dean World Series held each summer, Southaven will be adding competitive volleyball to its sports lineup this year. DeSoto Legacy Volleyball, LLC is slated to hold indoor games at the Arena at Southaven, best known for its trade shows and flea market. With an eye to expand, diversify and offer more opportunities for the city’s youth, officials also expect the volleyball games and tournaments to spur economic development in the city’s original business district. That’s what happened around Snowden Grove Park, south of Goodman Road. The park, with 300 developed acres, is called the crown jewel of the city’s recreational program. The massive site is home to a 17-field baseball complex where the Dizzy Dean World Series is played. Other amenities include the 10,000-seat BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove, which hosts top-name talent, and a Field of Dreams for special needs players. City officials recently opened a new senior center at the park where art and yoga classes, bridge club games, Friday night line dancing, and driving-lesson refreshers are held for citizens 60 years and older. The city also operates a nine-hole public golf course at Southaven Golf Center on Swinnea and an eight-field soccer complex on Stateline Road. Officials recently expanded the tennis courts at Snowden Grove by eight for a total of 12 courts, and added a $700,000 pro shop that includes a grill to tame the munchies, and an outdoor patio. With miles of trails and pathways available, Southaven is a good fit for exploration by bicycle and by foot. The city recently adopted its first formal plan for bike and pedestrian pathways to enhance connectivity among the city’s parks. Officials expect additional pathways to eventually connect with other DeSoto County cities and provide an unbroken pathway between areas for work and play. For a weekend retreat, Arkabutla Lake offers places to camp, swim, fish and boat. Only about a 30-minute drive from Southaven, the expansive park includes three swimming beaches and eight boat-launching ramps. It’s best known for crappie hotspots, but anglers pull several species of native fish from the depths of the lake, including largemouth bass, bream and catfish. The park ’s 30,000-acre wildlife management area is open to deer and turkey hunting. For daring outdoor fun, check out Southaven Skate Park, outfitted with ramps and rails for skateboarding and inline skating on Rasco Road at U.S. 51. For a tamer approach, Strike Zone offers 32 lanes of bowling and arcade fun adjacent to Snowden Grove Park. If watching games is more appealing than playing them, visit the Landers Center, where the Mississippi RiverKings, a professional minor league ice hockey team, has 23 scheduled home games for the 2017-18 season. And the Memphis Hustle, an affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies, kicked off their first season at Landers in November. To learn more or buy tickets to any Landers Center event, visit landerscenter.com.

JEFF CHURCHWELL, STORE MANAGER AT SUPERLO FOODS AT 945 GOODMAN ROAD EAST
BIG BOX, BIG BUSINESS
Southaven’s largest retailers see lots of positives to doing business here, with a strong shopping environment fed at least in part by population growth and lower taxes leading the list. “The employment rate is over 97 percent. Everybody’s working,” said John Jacobs, store manager of Sam’s Club in Southaven. “Predictions for job growth are good, and that makes it a strong shopping environment.” Sam’s Club is banking on the figures. The retailer expects to complete renovations
at the end of January that will offer grocery shoppers cutting-edge products and services. In addition to a full-service meat counter, where the higher-quality Kobe beef will be for sale, Sam’s Club will open a seafood and sushi bar, pizza café, and sell smoothies and coffee for folks to “grab a quick lunch and do their
shopping all at one time,” Jacobs said. The retailer also is offering drive-up services that Jacobs compared to picking up a burger at Sonic. Parking spots will be slated for drive-up customers. They’ll push a button to alert employees to their arrival and receive their orders without leaving their car. Of course, feeding the business climate is population growth. Approximately 700 people a year have been moving to Southaven in recent years, bringing the population to an estimated 54,000 people in 2017. Southaven is Mississippi’s third largest city. Though part of the metropolitan Memphis area, Southaven isn’t as burdened with taxes, say retailers like Jacobs. The sales tax alone is 2.25 percent lower than Memphis’. Lower taxes, said Jacobs, fuels growth. While all of DeSoto County has benefited, Southaven offers a central location. Sam’s

Club, at 465 Goodman Road East near Elmore Road, is not far from Interstate 55. “We’re right on Goodman Road. You can’t miss us. We’re in a great location,” said Jacobs. “Tanger Outlet Mall is just down the street, and motorists come up on Elmore Road. Foot traffic has increased year after year since those shops opened” in late 2015. “We really like being centrally located between Southaven and Horn Lake,” said Jeff Churchwell, store manager at Superlo Foods at 945 Goodman Road East, near Swinnea Road. “And we’re not far from Olive Branch.” As a price-conscious store, Superlo tries to earn business in part by keeping grocery costs as low as possible among its 65,000 product lines. At 56,000-square-feet, the store is smaller than Sam’s Club but tries to attract shoppers from around Southaven, too. Make no mistake, though, being in Southaven
with other retail centers is a positive, Churchwell said. The city ensures maintenance of interconnecting roads which helps give potential shoppers the ease of jumping from one site to the next, Churchwell said. Tanger Outlets was identified as leading to more traffic for Superlo. Roads between them are well traveled. “It did pick our business up. It definitely impacted us in a positive way,” Churchwell said. Another positive to doing business in Southaven, said the Wal-Mart store manager Anthony Brown, is the excellent schools in DeSoto County. They help recruit people and businesses to the cities. It’s all part of the growth equation that’s led to the Southaven Wal-Mart becoming one of the top five stores in sales company wide, Brown said. The 205,000-square-foot store in Southaven
offers more than 100,000 product lines. Southaven’s growth is indirectly responsible for Wal-Mart stores constructed in smaller, surrounding cities, such as Hernando, the county seat, Brown said. “They were all built to take the pressure off of this particular store.” Despite the growth, Brown defines Southaven as a “small town that has big aspirations.” Fortunately, it hasn’t lost its small-town sentiments. That is a plus of doing business in Southaven. When you know people, when you know your customers, you learn things that you wouldn’t hear in a large, unfeeling city. “We average 8,000 customers a day at the registers,” Brown said, “but you still see some of the same faces and you build relationships. They’re going to be the ones most honest with you, good and bad.”

TASTER’S CHOICE
“We pride ourselves on customer service whether it’s a quick business lunch or a leisurely dinner.” Fox & Hound’s menu includes a selection of 42 draft beers on tap, the average bar fare (wings, fried food and burgers), salads, and chargrilled chicken skewers. Seating up to 264 people, the restaurant makes Millennials welcome by offering the networking service Untapped that allows users to check in and rate beers as they drink them. Jim Neely ’s Interstate Barbecue and STEAK by Melissa are eating establishments with rooms for meetings or parties. “Our room holds up to 70 people. It’s great for any type of gathering. We also have offsite catering available,” said Melissa Cookston, owner of STEAK by Melissa. Other restaurants that play up their party capacity are Buffalo Wild Wings on Airways Boulevard, nearby Chick-fil-A, CiCi’s Pizza at Goodman and Swinnea roads, and Southaven Pizza at 531 Stateline Road West, across from Chamber of Commerce offices. Another one of the few restaurants open late at night,
FOX & HOUND
West End Bistro caters to the lunch crowd both on and off the premises. Situated at 9057 U.S. 51 North, the restaurant is open Tuesday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with hours that extend to dinnertime on Friday and Saturday. Its owner, Ernest Dickson, a former chef at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is working on building his lunchtime catering clientele. “We smoke a lot of our wings using hickory and pecan wood,” he said of one customer favorite. “We also serve Cajun pasta with three types of sausage.” At Pepper Chase Drive and Church Road, STEAK by Melissa offers meaty fare for up to 300 guests at a time. A favorite is the 24 ounce Porterhouse steak that couples split, and the fried pork chop with sides is a popular lunch item. “We have a great, fast lunch so customers can enjoy a good meal and get back to work on time,” said owner Melissa Cookston, author of two best-selling cookbooks. “We pride ourselves on customer service whether it’s a quick business lunch or a leisurely dinner.” Other spots known for quick lunches are Huey’s near the Malco movie theater, Olive Garden at Southaven Towne Center, Salsarita’s Fresh Mexican Grill on Getwell Road, and Longhorn Steakhouse near Baptist Hospital, Fox & Hound at 6565 Towne Center Crossing also offers a speedy lunch, and it is one of the few Southaven restaurants open late at night. “We’re open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day. We’re even open holidays,” said Reed Hunley, general manager. “You can come in at 1 o’clock in the morning and get a steak.”
SOUTHAVEN PIZZA
Southaven restaurants offer variety and versatility with quick lunches for busy executives, big rooms for celebrations or meeting, and night spots for relaxed dining.
Southaven Pizza puts on a fun atmosphere for its guests. “We’ve got games inside for the kids. A jukebox. We’ve got pizza, beer. We’ve got some customers who come in and entertain,” said co-owner Christi Roberts. “One likes to sing gospel and R&B. They feel like they’re at home.”
