entertainment district we’ve created in the Snowden District will pay incredible dividends to our city in the future. Any thoughts on Southaven’s new farmers market? We’re trying to revitalize this market that faded with lack of interest a few years ago. It’s one of the little things that brings happiness to our citizens, so it has become a priority.
PROGRESS MAKES PERFECT EIGHT QUESTIONS WITH SOUTHAVEN MAYOR DARREN MUSSELWHITE
If you had to sum up the city of Southaven for an outsider, how would you do it? Southaven is not a great city because of just one attribute. We “check all the boxes,” so to speak, when it comes to choosing a great place to live or do business. We have what everyone wants: key geographic location — a day’s drive to half the U.S. population — thriving economy with career options, educated workforce, and solutions for all consumer shopping needs; great housing options for all household budgets; great schools; great churches; great colleges, universities, and technical schools; great healthcare options; arts; professional and recreational sports; entertainment and general recreation; and restaurant dining. We have big-city amenities while maintaining a smaller feel and sense of community. I love to say, “We are the biggest little city in America!” What, in your opinion, makes Southaven a great place to raise a family? The answer is the same as the first
question, really. All of the amenities addressed are important in creating a great place for families to live. Families obviously want a safe place to live with good schools and fun things to do. There is no better place to raise a family than Southaven. What are some of the big challenges your office faces as Southaven continues to grow? We address the challenges of growth every day in our city. Obviously, with population and economic growth — specifically retail — comes crime challenges. Our public safety plan is second to none and involves the latest technology and personnel expansion to address all challenges. What is your favorite place in Southaven that has opened within the past five years? This could be a sports complex, restaurant, park — you name it. There’s no way for me to name just one in a city moving as fast as we are. I love them all, but will mention that the
What would you say was the most significant development for the city of Southaven in 2021? Again, our city is progressing the right way with a healthy diversification of business, not with just one significant development. The significant development from an industrial perspective with Medline, Spectra Labs, and Google will have long-lasting positive effects just as our retail market remains in demand. Introducing the new concept of mixed-use here has been a major success and will continue to be for the Silo Square and Snowden entertainment district with carryover to other parts of our city. The addition of multiple “entertainment-style” restaurants in 2021, some still pending construction, will bring dining and recreation to our city that has never existed before anywhere in Desoto County. What are your thoughts on being elected for a third term as mayor of the state’s third largest city? It’s very humbling and such a privilege to feel the support of the citizens you serve. I’ve advocated and delivered, with the help of so many, new amenities to Southaven that have never been here before. I will always be happy to know that I played a part in taking a great city and making it even better. We are a better city now than when I was originally hired in 2013 and it’s gratifying to know that most of our citizens recognize and appreciate the direction I’ve led us. Are you excited for the city’s new Whataburger? I certainly am, mostly because so many of my citizens love this place! They have a tremendous following!

10TH INNING BAR AND GRILL 5960 GETWELL ROAD, SOUTHAVEN, MS 10THINNING.MS 662.470.4794
A homerun host for game day food and fun, just across from Snowden Grove Park. Describe your business. We are a local sports-themed restaurant with great home-cooked food, great brunch and the best lunch around. It’s a family-oriented place where you can watch sports with those close to you. Everything we make is in-house and good, old fashioned home cooking. What are some of the most popular menu items at 10th Inning Bar and Grill? Our marinated, smoked wings are probably one of our top sellers, right up there next to the brisket burger on a potato bun. Our sausage and cheese plate is a big seller, as well. We make the pimento cheese we put on it, along with some smoked bologna and specially seasoned crackers that you can’t find anywhere else. What can you expect on a typical Tuesday night? Tuesdays don’t usually have a lot of sports happening,
so we host trivia on those nights. The subject varies from week to week. We have karaoke on Wednesday and Thursday night brings a one-piece band, both of which draw a crowd. Can you share some of the fun things (events, concerts, etc.) that happen at 10th Inning Bar and Grill? We regularly host charity events and have raised more than $100,000 in 2021 alone. Charity is one of our main focuses at 10th Inning. We’ve donated to a number of individuals in need in the community, in addition to the Tunica Humane Society, Palmer Home for Children and Healing Hearts Child Advocacy Center. What was it like hosting Governor Tate Reeves? It was a real treat and an honor for us. It was kind of a last-minute stop of his, but it wasn’t a quick in-andout lunch. He stayed for a while and we made him a plate lunch of fried chicken, green beens and mashed potatoes and homemade cornbread. It was a true Mississippi meal for a true Mississippian.

READY FOR OPERATION MIKE UPSHUR SERVES AS THE LEADER OF THE CITY OF SOUTHAVEN’S NEWEST AND BIGGEST CUSTOMER SERVICE SUPPORT SITE WITH THE OPENING OF THE GOOGLE OPERATIONS CENTER.

What is your official title and role with Southaven’s new Google Operations Center? I am the GOC U.S. site director. My immediate focus is on helping Google customers have the best experience with our products and services. I oversee the entire operation of the site with the main responsibility of cultivating talent here in the Southaven area. What is the main purpose of the Google Operations Center and what is its place in the local community? Google has more than 130,000 employees in countries across every continent, servicing everything from our flagship search to Android operating systems to Google Fiber, our cell phone service. The driving purpose behind our company is focusing on our user and everything else follows. The Google Operations Center here in Southaven is an evolution of that user-

first line of thinking that was made necessary by growing demand. We considered a number of things when choosing our next physical location — access to local talent, an overall great community, availability of land — and it just made sense at the end of the day to choose Mississippi. Who are some of the other key figures associated with the Google Operations Center? One key person I’d like to call out is our vice president, Troy Dickerson. She was the first person to announce that we would be opening in the Mississippi area in December 2019. When will the new 60,000-square-foot facility at 5665 Airways Boulevard be operational and fully staffed? We’ve made great progress on the office and parts are still under construction. I am elated at the design and the progress, but we haven’t confirmed the opening date yet. It will open when deemed safe to do so according to local conditions and guidelines.

What kind of workspace is this facility? Our work center is exciting, as you would expect of the Google brand. We want it to be a comfortable, productive space that encourages community collaboration across the entire team. The building will include individual workspaces, private offices, large meeting rooms, and informal lounges. We also have a café that provides breakfast and lunch to our employees, and I believe that will be a hit. We’re making sure that the space celebrates our values and local culture in the community, so we have commissioned a mural from a local Mississippi artist — Reshonda Perryman — which will be on display in our facility. This facility is the first of its kind, unlike anything Google has built before. What makes it so different? In 2021, we expanded our footprint by opening Google Operations Centers in Mississippi, the Philippines, and India. This GOC is the very first of its kind in the U.S. and it represents a major milestone for us. We’re proud of the support it provides and we look forward to enhancing that overall experience even further for our millions of users around the world from right here in Mississippi. How have staffing efforts gone so far? We have seen an enormous amount of talent in Mississippi and the Southaven metro area. We have been very impressed by the people who have come onboard so far. We hired nearly 200 employees by the end of 2021 and almost every one of those is coming directly from the Southaven area. How do you get the word out about available jobs? A lot of the traffic we get comes from the jobs section of our website, googleoperationscenter.com.

community and we can’t wait to meet up again in the near future. Has Google worked closely with any local government representatives during the course of this project? We work closely with state and local leaders to get involved in the community. Those representatives include the mayor, Chamber of Commerce, economic development councils, and many, many more.
Is Google offering any unique incentives or hiring bonuses when it comes to new staff? We’re not offering any additional incentives, but we do offer some very competitive salaries and industry-leading benefits, including a comprehensive healthcare plan with medical, dental, and vision coverage; company-paid life and disability insurance; as well as three weeks of paid vacation and up to 22 weeks of paid parental leave.
Why should the average Desoto County citizen be excited about the new Google Operations Center, even if they don’t plan to work there? In addition to partnering with local business organizations, we plan to partner with veterans organizations, educational institutions, and other groups.
Do you expect the Google Operations Center to interact with the Southaven Chamber of Commerce on a regular basis? We truly look forward to staying tightly connected with the local community, and that includes the Southaven Chamber of Commerce. We are grateful for how the chamber has welcomed us into the

LANE MASSEY, FUNERAL DIRECTOR AND EMBALMER - SOUTHAVEN
COLEMAN FUNERAL HOME OF SOUTHAVEN
626 STAR LANDING RD E, SOUTHAVEN, MS 38672 • COLEMANFUNERALHOME.COM • 662.349.3900
Bringing comfort, closure, and healing to grieving families in the mid-south Describe your business. We are a family-owned, full-service funeral home that strives to take care of families in their darkest days, when they often can’t function from grief and need to be able to properly memorialize the family members and loved ones they’ve lost. We try to do more than just have a funeral by taking it a little further in terms of honoring the loved one’s memory and the actions of their life. We work with families all the way from the time of passing to the burial to all kinds of aftercare, including death certificates and other personal matters. What are some of the services offered by Coleman Funeral Home? We offer standard burial services, including the embalming process and caskets made from a local shipper in Pontotoc, Mississippi. We try to have a lot of options for our customers and go above and beyond in terms of making the funeral a true celebration and memorialization of the life that was lost. We have two slots per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, so our attention can be 100 percent on a single group at a given time.
Does Coleman Funeral Home offer cremation? We have an in-house crematory, which is a service that has become more commonly used as of late. Right now, those are the cheaper services and it isn’t exactly the norm in our area. Mississippi just reached over 50 percent cremation rate for deaths in the state. We also offer full-service with cremation. Because cremation historically lacks a visual starting point for the grieving process, this option gives families a chance to still see their loved ones one last time while forgoing the purchase of a cemetery plot. What is the role of the funeral director at Coleman Funeral Home? The funeral director meets with families to walk them through the whole process. We give customers our personal cell phone numbers so we can be available at all times. We handle everything from notifying different parties, to music and flower arrangements. In addition, we allow families to pre-arrange their services so their loved ones don’t have to commit to planning and taking on the financial burden of a funeral when the time comes.

or many citizens in Desoto County, an affordable education can provide a pathway to higher wages and a vastly improved quality of life within just a few short years. Since it was established in 1927, Northwest Mississippi Community College has become known as the thirdlargest community college in the state of Mississippi, one that serves 11 counties across six campuses. With a strong program geared toward transitioning from community college to university at low cost, NWCC plays an active role in workforce development in Southaven and Mississippi at large. College currently has a partnership with the University of Mississippi known as the 2+2 Pathway Program. This program offers students the chance to complete their freshman and sophomore years at NWCC and then transfer those credits over to the University of Mississippi to complete their junior and senior years. “And they can do all that in just one building here at our Desoto campus,” says Dr. Keith Reed, Dean of the Desoto County campus of Northwest Mississippi Community College. “It’s an excellent program, especially when it comes to students who are placebound, otherwise known as those students

who want to continue their education but don’t want to go too far from home for various reasons. It is perfect for many of our students who live in Desoto County and the surrounding area because it allows them to continue working while attending college.” Career paths available under the 2+2 partnership include accountancy, business, marketing, finance, journalism, law, psychology, and more. “We’ve got several pathways included in this program, and Ole Miss in particular has one of the top accountancy schools in the country,” Reed says. “When students come out of that school, they often find jobs waiting for them on the other side.”

The PATH 4 program offers a seamless, four-year experience with exclusive benefits while you complete courses at both Northwest and Ole Miss at the DeSoto Center in Southaven. • Simplified Admission • Coordinated Advising • Scholarship Opportunities • Financial Aid Packaging • Joint Services, Organizations, and Activities • Two Degrees
Students are able to complete their associates’ degrees at Northwest Mississippi Community College for just a fraction of the cost of attending a major university. “If they do well in their coursework in those initial years and become members of the international honors society known as Phi Beta Kappa, many of those students are able to attend a university at no cost under scholarship,” Reed said. “Many of our students have been known to take advantage of that and don’t have to pay out of pocket for education costs once they finish here.” When it comes to workforce development and continued education, an early approach can often work best in getting citizens set on their career path. The Desoto County Economic Development Council accomplishes this by partnering with local businesses and schools to showcase a bevy of locally available career opportunities through an array of interactive, hands-on activities at an annual event.

IT IS PERFECT FOR MANY OF OUR STUDENTS WHO LIVE IN DESOTO COUNTY AND THE SURROUNDING AREA BECAUSE IT ALLOWS THEM TO CONTINUE WORKING WHILE ATTENDING COLLEGE.
“We really try to elevate connecting career pathways with career opportunities here in Desoto County,” says Bryant Henley, business development manager with the Desoto County Economic Development Council. “Each year, we host something called the Pathways2Possibilities Career Expo at the Landers Center, in which we bring in all eighth-graders in Desoto County to explore different career pathways that include everything from information technology to finance and health science.” Students are invited to compete with each other, play games, drive simulators, and practice with realworld equipment to gain insight on what their potential career could look like in the near future. The two-day event, which is held every October, is buoyed by key local

partnerships with the likes of Baptist Memorial HospitalDeSoto, Future Electronics, Civil-Link, Memphis Stone & Gravel, and more. On the second day of the event, local 11th graders are invited to see some of the same companies and experience the same opportunities, possibly with a better idea of career goals under their belts. Despite an ever-changing local job market, Henley praises the ingenuity on display from local businesses when it comes to creating new career opportunities for citizens. “I think creativity and resiliency have absolutely carried the City of Southaven through the past two years,” Henley says. “Businesses around here have found some very unique and impactful ways to communicate what kind of career opportunities are available in this region.”

Jason Woods helps homebuyers navigate the home loan application process in an unprecedented market Describe your business. I am a loan officer and branch manager for Community Mortgage. We are a local mortgage lender that’s been servicing the Mid-South for over 35 years. Community Mortgage was founded on the same principles that still stand today: straightforward communication, streamlined processes and a sound business model. Being a member in our community, our clients deserve nothing less. Is now a good time to buy a house? That depends on who you ask. It’s a fantastic time to sell a house since values in some places have risen 30 to 50 percent in the last year alone. But some sellers are scared to sell because they think they may have no place to go. Most homes listed have multiple offers in hours or days and buyers are willing to go above the list price to win the offer. However, interest rates are still at historical lows, so if you can land a deal, it’s a great time to buy. Even if you pay more than you want for a home, your monthly payment will still be lower since you can obtain a low interest rate over 15-30 years. Do I need great credit to get a mortgage? Not at all. Most programs with us can go down to a middle score of 620.
Should I choose a fixed-rate or an adjustable-rate mortgage? Most loans these days are on a fixed rate. However, adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs) are also an option. But ARMs are not as advantageous to the buyer as they were 10-plus years ago. Most ARMs are now more expensive than fixed mortgages, so most buyers go with a fixed rate. How much of a down payment should I expect? We have programs that require no down payment, and some as little as 3 to 3.5 percent of the mortgage. But every buyer is different in what they may qualify for, so it’s best to contact us to see what works best for their situation. We will work with them to get the best loan program that fits their needs. How long does the loan process take, and how does someone get in contact with you to see if they can get pre-approved for a home? Once we receive a contract the home loan process usually takes less than 30 days from start to closing. The best way to contact me is through my office at (662) 349-1300, my cell phone at (901) 246-0256 or by email jason@communitymtg.com.

CONNECTING PATHWAYS THE CITY OF SOUTHAVEN TOUTS SEVERAL NEW IMPROVEMENTS TO CREATE AN EVEN BETTER PLACE TO LIVE, WORK, AND PLAY.
A
s a city whose population increases by double digits every census, Southaven is constantly evolving and changing to fit the needs of its growing population. An array of phenomenal qualityof-life improvements showcase the very best of Desoto County through a wide selection of reputable local businesses and avenues for entertainment. A Gateway to Entertainment The city’s latest eye-catching attraction is the Snowden Pedestrian Bridge, a $1.9 million project that serves as the missing piece to cement a new, pedestrianfocused era in Southaven history. The bridge, which stands approximately 16 feet high and spans roughly 100 feet across Getwell Road, connects Snowden Grove with the now-iconic Silo Square mixed-use development project. It serves as

TECHNOLOGY yet another piece in making the Snowden District the first-ever entertainment district in Desoto County. “The first “Thething first thing it is going it is going to do to is connect do is connect two huge two huge pedestrian pedestrian pathspaths at at Snowden Grove and the other one coming down Tchulahoma and May Boulevard from Central Park,” says Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite. “The second thing is for safety, by separating pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Getwell Road at events.” Inspiration behind this new brick-clad structure came from similar architectural works at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University, in Foley, Alabama, and in Columbia, Missouri, at the University of Missouri. Construction on the bridge began back in January 2021 and saw completion in late October with a four-way traffic signal to be installed shortly after. “The extreme “The extreme advancements advancements we’vewe’ve mademade to make to make our city ourmore city more pedestrianpedesfriendly trian-friendly will certainly will certainly have a have positive a positive impact impact on the on future the future healthhealth of ourof citizens,” our citizens,” Musselwhite Musselwhite says. says. The bridge will act as a connecting piece to pedestrian trails, making it the longest pedestrian route in Desoto County history, linking the pending developments on the east side with Silo Square on the west side. “A lot of the businesses are aware of the bridge and it played a part in getting them here,” Musselwhite says. Brian Hill, developer behind the $225 million, 288-acre Silo Square project, praises the new path as an exciting new way for citizens to navigate the city. “When I told the city that I was interested in bringing the multi-use path through our development, I knew it was a winning idea,” Hill says. “Infrastructure and commerce are joined at the hip, and the whole process has been very exciting for everyone who calls Silo Square home and the city as a whole. Architecturally, it fits right in with the rest of Silo Square. It’s also got a beautiful LED lighting scheme that makes it incredible to view at night.”

OFFICE@WISDOMINTEGRATORS.COM Game Changers As part of the city’s mission to provide a great place for play, Southaven’s parks and recreation department has undertaken an array of exciting new projects for those with a passion for outdoor activities. In 2021, Southaven unveiled the brand-new Snowden Grove Soccer Complex, a seven-field facility just north of the baseball fields that was constructed for $5.2 million. In April 2021, the city hosted its first soccer tournament, the Springfest Cup. “We have “We have already already been been named named the host the site hostfor site the for2022 the 2022 Premier Premier Cup,”Cup,” says Wes says Wes Brown, Brown, director director of parks of parks and recreation and recreation with with the City the of City Southaven. of Southaven. “It is a “ItMisis a sissippi Mississippi Youth Youth Soccer Soccer Association Association statewide statewide tournament. tournament. This led to the department’s largest-ever year in revenue with zero rainouts across all seasons. “Our parks “Our parks department department is an economic is an economic driverdriver for our forcommunity,” our community,” Brown Brown says. “Businesses says. “Businesses relocate relocate and build andin build Southaven in Southaven because because of our of superior our superior public public safety, safety, public public schools, schools, and recreational and recreational opportunities. opportunities. “Like any city or business, we have not been immune to the struggles of this pandemic,” says Brown. “Hiring and maintaining a quality workforce is essential. It is relatively easy to build things, but if we cannot properly maintain and staff them, then we lose that quality of life we provide. Also, we want to work to ensure our programming, complexes, and events still meet the needs of our growing community.” For Brown, the presence of an active parks department is crucial to the development for a rapidly growing city. “Next to police and fire, I believe a great parks department is the most important thing for a city like Southaven,” Brown says. “We play a crucial role in providing an excellent quality of life for our citizens, from young children to seniors. Our residents enjoy the best parks amenities, recreational and competitive sports, exercise options, and community events.” The State of the Southaven Infrastructure As Southaven grows, being able to navigate the city at a comfortable pace is at the front of everyone’s mind. “One [of the biggest challenges currently facing South-

aven] is traffic on state and federal roadways where mitigation costs are greater than the city’s capacities and require funding from state and federal agencies,” says Musselwhite. “Another is the disagreement between the City of Memphis and the Horn Lake Creek Interceptor Sewer District that serves Southaven and Horn Lake regarding the 1974 contract allowing flow north to the South Memphis treatment facility. Changing this to the current Desoto County treatment facility (Desoto County Regional Authority) comes with a massive cost that will require state and federal funding.” In addition, Musselwhite has hopes that the Snowden District will become a regional destination location for visitors and a fun place to live for Southaven citizens. “It will be a game-changer from a financial perspective for our city, as well, with the revenues that will transcend our abilities to improve amenities throughout our city,” Musselwhite said. “The Metropolitan District at I-55 and Church Road will have this same effect in the near future.” Traffic congestion is yet another challenge to growth

Since 1972, the Landers name means trust in the automotive industry Describe your business. Landers Auto Group is in the business of automotive retailing and service. We sell cars, trucks, SUVs and used cars. We service all makes and models from oil changes to engine replacements. We employ 425 people in Mississippi and Tennessee and sell approximately 15,000 new and used automobiles each year. We have 15 franchises, representing all the major brands. Our community involvement benefits women, children, and especially education. Our largest market is Desoto County and North Mississippi. Is now a good time to buy a car? There has never been a better time to buy a new or used vehicle. Between interest rates at all-time lows and the rising value of trade-ins, the time is now. While it is true that inventories are at an all-time low, most of our customers are preordering their vehicles and getting exactly what they want. What is the most important thing to consider when buying a new vehicle? What is the most important thing to consider in buying a new vehicle is in the eye of the purchaser. It can be safety features, quality, reliability, dependability, or all of those. It can also be the looks of the vehicle but seldom does it come down to price.
Can you share the details of any community or local partnerships in Southaven/Greater DeSoto County similar to what Landers Auto does with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and The Down Syndrome Association of Memphis? Our largest involvement is the naming rights to the Landers Center. This was important to us to show our dedication to Desoto County. We have partnered with the premier event center and, more importantly, event center staff, in the MidSouth. As we do at the Landers Auto Group, they champion a customer-first attitude with quality, fit, and finish. We partner with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to sponsor a yearly breakfast that brings the business community and local schools together to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We partnered with Desoto county schools in 2019 to pay off the remaining balance of any Desoto County student’s lunch fees. We are proud to stand alongside Trinity Baptist Church in their Affordable Christmas program to help anyone in need this time of year. We collect bikes and toys for Christmas at Landers Ford South to give away. We support our First Responders each year with a luncheon on or around Sept. 11 to let them know they are respected, honored, and appreciated. Why should I buy a car through Landers Auto Sales? Because if it doesn’t say Landers, you paid too much! Just kidding. There are many places where you can purchase a vehicle. We understand that. That is why we strive to make each purchase and service a memorable experience, to let each customer know that they are appreciated. All cars are created equal. It’s the dealership that makes the difference.

for Southaven, one which Musselwhite admits that planning and seeking adequate funding probably consumes as much or more of his time than anything else. “All of our transportation in Southaven is interwoven,” says John Caldwell, northern district transportation commissioner with the state of Mississippi. “From pedestrians to cyclists to cars and commercial trucks, it’s all interconnected and we have to make sure to address the safety aspect at all levels. Projects like the pedestrian bridge over Getwell Road have proven to be another piece of the puzzle.” Caldwell is partially responsible for planning, developing, maintaining, and
improving transportation in Desoto County. “The state of our infrastructure is certainly in need, as most of the state of Mississippi has come to understand,” he says. “We’ve been very flat in terms of funding over the past 12 years and our roads and bridges are starting to show signs of the wear and tear that can create, so we’ve got quite a ways to go in terms of getting some of our infrastructure where it needs to be.” He notes that the I-269 bridge in the south part of Desoto County did little to stave the flow of traffic on I-55 North or Goodman Road. “It provided room for 2,200 cars and trucks to drive daily on that new

white notes that the ever-present issue of criminal activity is one that hasn’t slipped off his radar. “We address the challenges of growth every day in our city,” he says. “Obviously, with population and economic growth — specifically retail — comes crime challenges. Our public safety plan is second to none and involves the latest technology and personnel expansion to address all challenges.” Further major upcoming developments for the City of Southaven include a massive, $35 million revamp to the Landers Center. This expansion, which could potentially reinvigorate the local tourism industry, will include a new hotel that features up to 200 guest rooms, a resort-style pool, restaurant, and more. According to a feasibility study by Convention Sports & Leisure International Inc., expanding the Landers Center would boost its average events from 361 to 577. And with an onsite hotel, the number of attending days would grow from 316,000 to 650,000 with more frequent and larger events. For Lee Caldwell, District 4 supervisor with Desoto County, the new project’s approval represents the culmination of several years’ worth of planning from county officials. “It’s been a project that we’ve really wanted to look at since the Landers Center was built more than 20 years ago,” Caldwell says. “There is a desire from the public for a civic center that is able to host our graduates and larger events, as well as a larger hotel for things like conferences and trade shows. Now, with a 14 percent increase in growth — the highest in the state — and 185,000 people, a project like this can now be brought to life in a big way.”

Southaven’s most glamorous in grooming keeps pets fresh, clean, and dapper with only the finest all-natural treatment. Describe your business. We are a full-service dog groomer that will do everything from bathe your pet to clean its toenails. The business was started in Collierville and we opened in Southaven about five years ago. We have 10 employees and are currently looking for more. When should my puppy come in for its first grooming? We like to bring them in when they’re about two to three months old to get them used to the clippers and trim a little around the face and sanitary area. After that, we try to get them used to the bathing process.
What kind of services do you offer? A typical grooming package includes a bath, haircut, and anal gland expression. We also have a de-shed program if your dog leaves a lot of fur around. We offer a variety of shampoos for your pet, including oatmeal shampoo, aloe medicated shampoo, a dark coat enhancer, and a coconut conditioner that leaves your pup smelling wonderful. In addition to regular grooming, we offer a daycare. How often should my pet be groomed? Ordinarily we would recommend every 5-6 weeks. We have some people who come in just about every other week, so it depends on the dog and the owner. What are some important things to keep in mind when it comes to grooming and pet health? The main thing most people overlook is regular brushing. If you don’t keep your dog brushed, it can get matted and oftentimes the dog needs to get shaved completely.

dren, adolescents, and adults from age 3 and up. In addition, the organization has programs for speech, occupation, and physical therapy geared toward children and adolescents. Their staff includes licensed professional counselors and clinical social workers, as well as psychiatric nurse practitioners. “Our population is changing every day as it continues to grow, and with that we have lots of things that can come up in our area: depression, anxiety, stress,” Wood says. “Especially with Covid and everything going on in the world, these things have increased lately. To have mental health facilities that can service our local population is just invaluable.” Desoto Family Counseling Center also offers unconventional therapy options in the form of mindfulness therapy, yoga, art and music therapy, as well as equine therapy. “When your mental health suffers, everything around you can suffer,” Wood said. “This includes work, education, family relationships and more. It really impacts every single aspect of what you do. Whenever you have somewhere that you can go on a regular basis to help address that, it can greatly improve your quality of life.” Wood’s team now offers a client-centered treatment

method known as “Adventure Therapy,” which brings patients outside and gets them active in a multitude of activities on the organization’s 11-acre property on Greenbrook Lake. In addition to Desoto Family Counseling Center, Vertava Health Mississippi offers an evidence-based approach to substance-use disorder and mental healthcare from its location on Stateline Road. “We offer same-day admissions and are in-network with many major insurances,” says Stacy Dodd, the Mid-South regional community ambassador for Vertava Health. “Our Mid-South region is made up of one inpatient center and five outpatient centers located in the greater Memphis area. Our staff are trained and knowledgeable of many populations and demographics, including veterans, expectant mothers, first responders, and those in the LGBTQIA+ community.” Patient care services at Vertava Health Mississippi include inpatient detox, inpatient residential, outpatient partial hospitalization programming, outpatient programming, and virtual care. By their third assessment, Vertava Health Mississippi patients have seen a 66 percent increase in overall improvement, 69 percent decrease in depression, and 27 percent
decrease in anxiety. “We want to help as many people as possible get the support they need when they need it,” Dodd says. “Our patients can count on us prior to starting treatment with us as well as after graduating from our program. Before starting treatment, we can help with transportation logistics any time of day as needed and have put together a robust alumni program to help those after graduating from the program.” The 132-person staff of Vertava Health Mississippi consists of medical doctors, family nurse practitioners, psychiatric nurse practitioners, registered nurses, master-level clinicians, therapists, social workers, counselors, psychiatrists, case managers, and recovery coach technicians, as well as those who handle transportation, food, and housekeeping for patients. “I also call Desoto County home and encounter people who are living proof of our program’s success and impact, and I’m certain that our organization can be of great value to clients and the community we both serve,” Dodd says. “As someone that has been in recovery for over 21 years, an advocate for those in recovery as a state representative for the Celebrate Recovery Inside program, and a published author, my passion is helping others succeed in recovery.” Since opening in December 2015, more than 5,000 individuals have passed through the doors of Vertava Health Mississippi, 800 of which were veterans. Vertava Health Mississippi’s approach to maintaining mental health and fighting addiction has even drawn the attention of Southaven’s mayor, who recently praised the organization’s efforts. “We have so many organizations whose ‘heart is right’ and serve our people,” says Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite. “The newest differencemaker is Vertava Health, who is making great strides saving the lives of people suffering from addiction. The opioid crisis is robbing the lives of so many citizens now and this is an urgent need that Vertava is successfully targeting.”

ARTS
ART FOR EVERYONE
SOUTHAVEN ARTS COUNCIL EMBRACES LOCAL CREATIVITY IN A BIG WAY.
A
simple goal of enhancing the community through making the arts accessible to all drives the Southaven Arts Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to showcasing local creativity and enhancing the community through making the arts accessible to all. “I want to find people who don’t know they’re artists yet,” said Kelly Adkins, president of the board of directors of the Southaven Arts Council.

The Southaven Arts Council’s mission statement proudly proclaims that the organization puts art first – enhancing our community through making the arts accessible to all, presenting and promoting arts events, and supporting a creative community for local artists. “I know that Southaven is a place for art,” Adkins said. “Art can only advance our quality of life and there are so many people here who need some kind of resource when it comes to the visual arts.” The organization, which has garnered more than 90 local members since its inception in 2019, presents inclusive opportunities to make a place for art in Desoto County for artists of all ages. Members include an array of prominent local painters, photographers, sculptors, writers and more. “We have a lot of painters, including some very seasoned artists who everyone around here knows such as Gwen Luttrell and Jan Carnall, as well as number of people who have never shown their work publicly before,” Adkins said. “We have a fabulous artist named Kim Cook, whose jewelry can be found in shops around town.” Membership in the Southaven Arts Council provides local artists with resources that include places where they can show their work and classes where they can learn or teach, as well as a chance to meet and network with other creatives. “We’re trying to figure out the best way to reach the community and find the best way to reach those who might not think art is for them,” said Adkins. “Art is part of everyone’s life, whether they know it or not. Even if you do nothing but sit and watch TV, you’re watching the work of artists.” Without a central headquarters, the Southaven Arts Council relies on local venues to host gatherings, something that was made more difficult with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic a year after its founding. “We started out in 2019 in a big way with all kinds of events ranging

from children’s art camps, poetry nights, arts festivals and more,” Adkins said. “And then March 2020 happened and everything shut down.” Art, however, finds a way and the Southaven Arts Council was able to continue facilitating creativity during the pandemic through take-home kits of art supplies and Zoom craftwork classes. “It ended up being a good opportunity for the council,” Adkins said. “We took a step back, reworked our bylaws, created a strategic plan and got done what we needed to get back into the swing of things.” A large component of the Southaven Arts Council’s community outreach happens through the M.R. Davis Southaven Public Library, which currently hosts a gallery of members’ works in the lobby area immediately to the left of the front entrance. “The Southaven Librar y has been very supportive of us,” Adkins said. “We used to have a free monthly arts and crafts night before COVID, and then we switched to take-home kits for a while, and now we’ve actually been able to return to arts and crafts nights in person since this past October.” The gallery space showcases a variety of different visual works that changes every six to eight weeks, and most recently hosted an exhibit featuring more than 20 photographs from local artists. “We are really happy with our partnership with the Southaven Arts Council, one which started around the time when the group began a few years ago,” said Caroline Barnett, branch manager with the Southaven Public Library. “We have a gallery space in the library that can be seen as you come through the front door. We’d had some exhibits before but nothing permanent and we eventually met with the Arts Council and they committed to a permanent rotating display.” Adkins also credits Coffee Central owner Tina Tatum for allowing the arts council to use her space for exhibits,
reception and the occasional poetry night. As a member of the Southaven Chamber of Commerce, the arts council enjoys the benefits of collaborating with the chamber on upcoming art shows, in addition to showcasing paintings and other works at chamber events. “I think people, in general, grossly underestimate local talent,” says Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite. “So many are obsessed with Hollywood, New York, and that bigger stage, but we have tremendously talented people in Southaven. I also believe the arts have large opportunities for improvement in our city and I look forward to seeing this progress now and in upcoming years.” A longtime advocate for the arts, Adkins began as original board member with the Southaven Arts Council and became president in 2020. “I’ve always been around art and appreciated art,” she said. “I love being around that world and find it very inspiring.” Members of the Southaven Arts Council regularly contribute to the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi’s annual Crystal Ball, Southaven’s biggest charity event of the year in the form of crafty sculptures and other decorations. In addition, the organization has collaborated with Desoto Family Theatre on things like costume and set design. “When we started out, we raised a lot of the funds ourselves while charging a small membership fee and accepting donations from some generous sponsors,” Adkins said. “Now, we’ve got to figure out how to raise more funds to engage even more people in Southaven and get them involved. What I want most for 2022 is to find out how to best serve our community, as well as how to bring in and encourage any kind of local collaborations.” To g et invo l ve d w ith th e S outhaven A r t s Council , v isit : southavenartscouncil.org.

PEDIATRIC DENTAL GROUP & ORTHODONTICS 7734 AIRWAYS BLVD, SOUTHAVEN, MS 38671 • PDGOSMILES.COM • 662.349.3838
The PDGO team loves being a part of our community, serving the dental and orthodontic needs of children and teens. We strive to give all of our patients a confident smile. Describe your business. Pediatric Dental Group & Orthodontics is a dental office that specializes in caring for the dental needs of infants, children, and teens. The goal of our doctors and staff is to make quality dental care fun and simple for our patients and their parents! PDGO has locations in Southaven, Olive Branch, and Germantown. With Pediatric Dentists, Family Dentists, and a Board-Certified Orthodontist, we can ensure that from baby teeth to braces, PDGO is here for every stage of your child’s life. It is our desire to serve your family well. When should I schedule my child’s first dental visit? Pediatric Dental Group & Orthodontics agrees with The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and recommends that a child should have their first dental visit right after they celebrate their first birthday or soon after their first tooth comes in. This is a great time to establish a “Dental Home” for your child. We believe that children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care. PDGO is committed to providing a warm and friendly environment, and it is our desire to make your child feel comfortable and at ease.
When should I schedule my child’s first orthodontic visit? It begins with a complimentary consultation. The American Academy of Orthodontics recommends an orthodontic screening no later than age 7. This visit will help determine if your child has any existing orthodontic problems or if one is about to begin. You will learn about the different treatments and services offered at PDGO and consult with Dr. Collazo to find out which treatments are best for your child’s needs and goals. If we indicate that you aren’t quite ready to begin your orthodontic treatment, your child will get to join the Super Smile Club, PDGO’s Observation Program. While in our Complimentary Observation Program, our orthodontist will monitor growth and development every 6-12 months until it’s the perfect time to begin treatment. What are some of the steps your team takes to make a dental visit a tear-free experience? Our pediatric dentists spent an extra two years in school because they love working with kids. Our staff sought out pediatric dental employment because they also love working with kids. Our office is designed to make your kids feel comfortable and at ease. If there is anywhere for your children to overcome their fear of the dentist, it’s PDGO. Just get them through the door and we’ll take care of the rest.

SOUTHERN ROOFING AND RENOVATIONS MISSISSIPPI 5960 GETWELL RD, SUITE 101, SOUTHAVEN, MS 38672 • WEROOFMISSISSIPPI.COM • 662.420.4547
The Mid-south’s fastest growing roofing company offers on-time and budget-friendly solutions to fulfill a variety of remodeling, roofing and insurance claim needs. Describe your business. Southern Roofing and Renovations Mississippi strives to be the best in the roofing and renovation world. Whether residential or commercial clients, all projects get the “southern” treatment. Through technology and a thirst for knowledge, our company has raised the bar on the standard for contractors. With state of the art showrooms, and consistent training and investing into our future, we are able to pass along all of our strengths and knowledge to meet our clients’ needs. How do you know if it might be time to replace your roof? Most homeowners wait until there is a leak that they can see or notice missing shingles on the roofing system. Regular inspections will assist in determining when a roof needs to be replaced. Age, type of roof and amount of damage help determine if roof replacement is necessary.
What is the best kind of roof? One that doesn’t leak! The best kind of roof is one that the homeowner trusts. However, a roof where functionality and cosmetic look go hand-in-hand can be best for most people. There is a vast range of materials, colors and costs, so we have created a state-of-the-art showroom where we explain and show all the options available for your home to create a roofing system that you love, that’s within your budget, and is the best roof for you. How long does it take to replace a roof? Every roof has its challenges and different aspects to increase the complexity of a roof system install, but on average 1-3 days. What is the biggest mistake a person can make when it comes to maintaining the roof of a home? The biggest mistake a homeowner can make is not getting their roof inspected regularly, especially after big storms. Our company, and many others, will complete free basic roof inspections and can advise if any maintenance, repairs or replacement is necessary.

YOUR CBD STORE
1076 GOODMAN RD E, SOUTHAVEN, MS 38671 • CBDRX4U.COM/FIND-US/MISSISSIPPI/SOUTHAVEN • 662.470.6497
Southaven’s only store strictly dedicated to cbd, cbg and cbn products derived from 100-percent organic and usa grown non-gmo industrial hemp Describe your business. We are a CBD retailer that is part of a chain of 700 stores across the country. We grow it and extract it. We have our own chemists and doctors, so we control the whole process up to when it lands on store shelves. What is CBD? CBD is a cannabinoid, just like the endocannabinoids naturally produced in our bodies. As we get older, some of us just don’t produce enough. CBD helps our bodies to produce more of those endocannabinoids and that helps promotes a desired state of homeostasis, or balance. When you’re in that state of balance,
you can drastically cut down the level of inflammation that might be causing various ailments in the body. What sets your store apart from the rest? Our in-depth knowledge of CBD and what it is sets us apart in the CBD industry. We offer our customers transparent education on CBD. When our customers come in, our trained staff walks them through the process and will offer a free sample of our products, and share with them the most up to date information from our doctors and scientists. What types of CBD products do you sell? We have bath bombs and soaks, hand lotions and topical relief creams, a lidocaine roll-on, capsules, special OBGYN-formulated products, and several kinds of water soluble mixes and sublingual oil tinctures, as well as vape cartridges and gummy tablets.
