“My taste tends towards excess,” noted the homeowner. “I tend to think about all of the details, whereas my partner excels at editing me and pulling me back when needed. It was definitely a fun process, but not without its frustrations on occasion.” Among the many focal points of the home include the three inset glass floor panels made of half-inch tempered safety glass in the upper hallway. Not only do they provide that initial jaw-dropping expression, they also turn up the volume on functionality. “This is a long, narrow home that can get dark in the middle,” explained the homeowner. “These panels serve to harvest the light from the penthouse level and bring it down to the lower level.” Additionally, the panels have accent lights beneath them to enhance the area once the sun goes down. So….do you actually walk across them? “While we have obviously gotten used to them, it is interesting to note that when guests come over, they initially tend to walk around the glass,” laughed the owner. “I left the aluminum raw, as I like the distressed nature it gives,” said the owner. Most of the artwork within the home is locally sourced and Kansas City inspired. “That was very important to us,” noted the homeowners. “We have many beautiful things in Kansas City that need to be celebrated.” Among the many personal touches that you most likely won’t see in any other home are the pieces of both owners’ past that still have a heartbeat today. For example, the mid-century collection of salt and pepper shakers, once put away in boxes because of lack of space in which to display them, now enjoy their new home in the dining area. Moving into the office, there is a grand collection of toys, from sock monkeys made by an aunt and mom many years ago to a seemingly endless collection of little people that line the shelves. From a distance, they bring a pop of color to the space, and when viewed up close, you eventually realize that they are cleverly placed and displayed toys from days gone by. An old drum made by one of the owners when he was in Boy Scouts holds its own on a side table and the triangular wall mural gives the room added character. Other fun touches include the highboy cabinet with eclectic mid-century lines in the entry way accented by a collection of circle mirrors above; a KCP&L historic tower tile mural with an actual blinking red beacon light at the top made by the owner; and the pièce de résistance –– the “can’t miss” Gulf sign that adorns the wall going up the stairs. “I had a love of vintage, large scaled signs for years and when I found this at a place called Retro Inferno, that re-inspired me,” he said. “It is 72 inches in diameter and has backlit LED tape lighting and a frame built around it to match the wood ceiling in the penthouse. The upstairs penthouse level is the perfect lounging spot after the end of a long day. The coffee table doubles as a gas fire pit with volcano rock. There are hookups in place for an outdoor TV and a hammock with accompanying umbrella is the perfect spot for that late afternoon weekend nap. The simple approachability of the space can certainly make anyone feel comfortable enough to kick off his shoes and sit back for a bit. “We definitely feel at home here. This place has so many opportunities to talk,” smiled the owners.

McDermott and the RDM Architecture team were fully involved with the development of the home, which encompassed roughly four years of committed teamwork. In addition to the 10,000 square feet of living space, there is another 5,000 square feet of usable outdoor space which is easily accessed from within the home. Just like a jaw-dropping piece of art, this inhabitable sculpture represents the result of keen attention to detail, design, functionality and form, seamlessly coming together as undoubtedly one of the top designs in the portfolio of RDM Architecture. “This Mediterranean style home has four bedrooms plus one additional room currently used as an exercise room that can be converted to another bedroom in the future, along with two half baths, one full bath with tub and four full baths with showers,” noted McDermott. “This house was completely customized for the owners and they were involved in the design and the material selection throughout a long and in-depth process which resulted in a great house that fits their style and the way they live.” Among the outstanding highlights of this home include the helical staircase and tower above in the entryway; a two-story great room; a master suite with a formal sitting room; sun room; main floor laundry room that doubles as a catering kitchen and “Her” office and lower level gathering room and theater room. There is also a second floor screen porch that offers a spectacular view. Mahogany was a running theme throughout the home, as well, and was used in the ceilings in the great room, as well as in the trim and the columns. The numerous outdoors spaces situated on all levels, along with large windows strategically placed throughout, support the ambiance of being among nature at nearly every turn.

In a 40-year career, you hope to have at least one project where the owners are committed to produce the best of the best, and this client fulfilled that dream with the completion of this true work of art.” One of Julian’s favorite aspects of this home is the helical main staircase, which opens to the expansive living area, featuring solid mahogany throughout. “The attention to detail in this home far exceeds any expectation you may have as you tour the layout,” said Julian. “Working with the owners as they strived for perfection truly helped us jointly create a masterpiece. The accompanying slip cover chairs give it a casual feel which are tempered by the two burlap ones on either end, giving the space a bit of texture. Working with a palette of blues and greys throughout the home, Bartlett has captured an easy-going coastal feel reminiscent of a cozy seaside cottage. She has successfully blended soothing hues along with numerous beach-like accessories and furnishings, to create an appealing look. Because this home sits on the lake, the details of the furniture and the accessories provide a coastal-like atmosphere without being too beachy. “It is good not to have everything match to allow for more depth and interest in the space,” emphasized Bartlett. “It makes it more interesting that way.”

Through the use of DRG stimulation, leads are implanted under the skin in the spine. Mild electrical impulses are sent to the area of a DRG within the spine, which allows the DRG to block pain signals from traveling to the brain from that specific area. As a result, instead of the sensation of pain, a patient may sense either a slight tingling feeling or the complete absence of pain. Procedurally, this device is easily navigated by a trained physician. A lead is implanted on the nerve that is attached to the DRG through which the electrical impulses are sent, powered by a battery that is also implanted beneath the skin. Much like a spinal cord stimulator, it is operated by a rechargeable battery and is implanted through a device that goes through the skin. DRG stimulation can be directed to certain areas from which the pain is felt. DRG simulation aids in reducing effects from problems such as continued pain after a total knee or hip replacement, post-amputation pain, pain after hernia repair and complex regional pain syndrome. It should be noted, however, that this type of stimulation is not promoted as a cure for the source of pain, as pain reduction varies by individual. Most patients, however, experience at least a 50% reduction in pain, with some studies showing as high as 90% reduction in pain. Done on an out-patient basis under light intravenous sedation in typically under an hour, an initial trial procedure is first required. Patients may realize minor post-surgical pain but can expect to return to their normal routine almost immediately. The use of the stimulator can result in decreased pharmaceutical requirements; less side effects; and additionally offers more long-term pain control. With both two and five-year data reports published, the company behind the device has reported upwards of an 80% success rate. “After researching all of the data, I am excited to offer it to my patients,” expressed Dr. Fotopoulos. “In all rights, it should nearly abolish the rare and severe pain seen after knee replacement surgeries.
