Author William Maltese, in his fascinating book of brain-teasers, Catalytic Quotes (Some Heard through A Time Warp), asks his readers: “What might have been the result of two famous entities, often separated by centuries, having been able to have a brief conversation?” For example: HANK AARON to WILLIAM GOLDING: “Yep Me — The Lord of the Flies.” Hank Aaron, a baseball player, known for his home-runs (fly-balls) record; William Golding, author of the novel “Lord of the Flies”. Nothing to Sneeze At!

Those squares of linen which some men still carry in their pants’ pockets for chivalrous surrender to teary-eyed women in distress, or for blowing noses to clear sinuses, no longer have anything whatsoever, in this day and age, to do with those other squares of material, often silk, partially displayed above the lips of those outside right breast pockets of men’s suit coats and sports jackets. The latter, termed “pocket squares”, have an uncertain history. One school of thought theorizes that they merely morphed from ordinary handkerchiefs after having made the journey from pants to breast pockets when the former became so literally tainted by filthy lucre as to soil unacceptably all hankies that came in contact with it. Kept cleaner in breast pockets, hankies, then, became completely irrelevant, as anything but merely fashion statements, once more hygienic disposable tissues came into existence after WWII. Whatever the true evolution of pocket squares, they’re still here, although some men seem disinclined to use them. In not taking advantage, men pass up the opportunity to stamp a bit of originality and individualism on men’s ensembles that, these days, can still be conservatively less unique and colorful than their female counterparts. On the other hand, some men, willing to be a bit more daring, violate a de-rigueur rule of fashion by actually using pocket squares of the same designs and materials as whatever the ties they happen to be wearing, roped into this major fashion faux pas by merchants who obviously know better but who have found a way to make supplemental profits from tie sales. A pocket square should be of a color that complements (or not) some aspect of a man’s attire — whether his coat, shirt, tie, trousers, socks, or shoes. It should be placed into a jacket’s outside breast pocket with a studied patience that doesn’t produce any unsightly bulge to interfere with a jacket’s natural fit and/or fall-line. To aid in this, various folding procedures (as can be found for table napkins) — Presidential, Classic, Puff, Reverse Puff, Single Peak … et al) — can be tracked down on-line. Although pocket squares can be purchased in many varieties, I, a few years back, commissioned Dutch artist Johan Ekkel to provide me with the barbed-wire design which I, then, had New-Batik artist Daniel Holtz edge on several original batik pocket squares which have, since then, pretty much become my trademark and mainstay. Any man, though, particularly taken by any bolt of cloth, can as easily have a seamstress cut that cloth to measure and hem it to provide a desired (roughly 10”x10”) totally unique pocket square of his very own. williammaltese@yahoo.com

ADVANTAGING HUMPTY DUMPTY WILLIAM MALTESE

I was having a drink on the rooftop of an Athens’ hotel when the friend I was with asked me the inevitable question: “Where, William, do you think you might end up next?” I’d pretty much decided upon England, because of the novel I thought it might be fun to write (since published as A CONSPIRACY OF RAVENS), if the rumor proved true that there really was a flock of ravens housed within the grounds of The Tower of London, the birds’ wings regularly clipped to keep them from exiting the premises lest an old legend come true about their departure heralding the downfall of the British Empire. As luck would have it, likewise proving what a small world it really is, my Greek friend had first heard the legend directly from a retired Brit and Yeoman Warder who had been one of the very Beefeaters (an erroneous nickname probably having originally resulted from meat once part of the daily rations for the men on duty at The Tower) “of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress The Tower of London and Member of the Sovereign’s Body Guard of the Yeoman Guard Extraordinary.” My friend said he’d be happy to contact the retired Yeoman in question, next time I was in London, to see if there was anyone presently on duty at the Tower who could provide me with a personalized tour. That is why, less than a year later, I was not only being shown around The Tower and its environs but was within pecking distance of the seven clipped-winged ravens in residence at the time. There had been eight such birds up until three days before when one of the birds had been exiled, as had several other mischievous ones in the past, for “conduct unbecoming a Tower Resident.” The next morning, while sitting on the rough-stone patio of the Yeoman Warder’s retirement “cottage” (with doorways so low that they required my constant ducking to risk some nasty head-whacking), in Henley on Thames (site of the famous Regatta), I was first served the following baked-eggs dish of which I’ve since become particularly fond.

Queen’s-Man Baked Eggs

1 t garlic, finely minced 1 t fresh thyme, finely minced 1 t chives, finely minced 2 T fresh parsley, minced 3 T Parmesan cheese, grated 4 T milk, (skim, whole, 2%, or cream) 2 t butter, unsalted 12 extra-large eggs Salt to taste Black pepper to taste

Place the oven rack about 6 inches from the broiler. Preheat the broiler for 5 minutes. Combine the garlic, thyme, chives, parsley, and cheese. Set aside. Put 4 individual gratin dishes on a baking sheet; place 1 T of milk (or cream), and ½ t of butter in each dish. Place under the broiler for about 3 minutes, or until bubbly. As milk and butter are heating, crack 3 eggs into each of 4 cups or small bowls, being careful not to break yolks. Have these ready to go when milk and butter are hot. Quickly, but carefully, pour 3 eggs into each of the 4 individual gratin dishes. Divide herb and cheese mixture into four equal parts and sprinkle over eggs. Salt and pepper to taste. Place dishes back under broiler, cooking until eggs are almost done, about 5 to 6 minutes. The eggs will continue to cook after they are out of the oven, so DON’T overcook. So, Tell me Dahlink Do You Believe in Alchemy? by Brenda Burgett The definition for alchemy in case you haven’t checked lately, is turning or making something with little or no value into something of tremendous worth. I totally believe in this thinking, and I currently have a box of rocks that are in the process of becoming very large diamonds. It is not beyond my belief to expect that a pair of a middle school boys tube socks could become a lovely pair of silk pajamas, If I wanted it to happen it could happen. However, the boy would miss his socks and I prefer to sleep in sweats and an old football jersey. The jersey used to belong to a middle school boy, I gave birth to. That’s close enough to silk for me. While alchemy thinking may be frowned on by some and embraced by others. That is probably not worthy of seeking a grant and a study, but it is a substantial part of my retirement plan. That plan and a weekly lottery ticket makes up my comprehensive agenda for the granite years. I choose not to marry for money. I have long forgotten why I made that choice. I took the sexy guy who was hard to land. I think there is a bit on karma involved in that fishing expedition as well as the thought of be careful of what you wish for? There reaches a time in life that you just know it’s a good idea to stay put. The past is past and the guy you should have married, was landed by a very young woman who produced lots of babies and has her name on his trust fund. So, it has become a large part of my current life to believe that I am not old or young. I just am who I am. I can become a diamond if I chose or remain a box of pretty rocks. There is no right or wrong in this line of thinking. But it should be noted that I have the choice and if I really believe this then I lose the right to play the whine card. That line of thinking also ties in with the glass being half full or half empty. When it is half anything your attention may be diverted from the positive thinking or negative thoughts, should a fly be doing the backstroke in the liquid. Should this unfortunate event happen, your attention may be drawn from the identity thinking, and may or could be compromised. In that case don’t judge yourselves too harshly. Rescue the fly and hope you remember to dump it instead of drinking it later. That ties right into the rolling with the events around you. Can you roll with and not become a part of the landscape? Becoming part of may depend on how well you married? If you, scrape your own vehicles’ window on a winter morning before going to work, then it would be difficult to blend into slow and ice. Snow and ice may be considered alchemy material unless you do the winter sports thing. I have done all the snow I require for this time. And I may add it to my boxes of rocks and see if it will grow palm trees and a beach? So, a box of rocks or very large diamonds? A marathon swimming fly in my ice tea, which may or may not affect my positive attitude, it’s great to have choices isn’t it? I’ll be looking for my small island that I rule over as queen. I could throw rocks at the flies and watch them turn into diamonds, or I might be at peace with my world and know that life is full of alchemy opportunities should I choose to believe it.

PATRICIA LOVELAND INTERVIEW by Wanda Julian and Jean Maye

How did you get into acting? Paricia’s love for acting started at school when she was given the lead role, Kate, in ‘ She Stooped to Conquer,’ a theatre comedy by Olvia Goldsmith. She knew then that the new world she had been introduced to, would remain with her forever. How long have you been acting for? Patricia has been acting since that very moment of staring in the school play. But, after leaving school, Patricia trained as a nurse then specialised in Midwifery. However, she has always continued acting and has continued to be cast in many theatre roles. In was in 1990, that things changed for Patricia. She was invited to audition for a role in Anthony Hopkins Shadowlands. Here she was offered a walk-on role, a supporting actors role and it was here that the diversity between theatre and film took hold. Patricia explained ‘The acting is remarkably different on film and in many respects, you underplay the role on screen as to make it look natural.’ While on set in Shadowlands, Patricia experienced a moment where she just felt transcended from theatre to film. It was the catalyst that has driven her ever since to follow her heart and passion into the world of film. (See the list of films below)

Tell us a little bit about your character in The Adventures Diary. (Also see write up below – this answers some of this) ‘One aspect that I really love about character Marion’, said Patricia ‘is that she manages to pick distress and loneliness of the loss her husband Fred and find the confidence to go back out on another adventure. I know how hard this is, having lost my own husband a few years ago. When you’re a widow, it’s very easy to not, get on with life. You have to have the courage to pick yourself up and carry on. This is exactly what character Marion does but with attitude! ’ ‘The other thing I love about the story is the Owl and the pussycat theme. It was one of my favourite poems as a child. It’s enchanting’. Of course, Jean has had to adapt the script from the original that she sent me due to the some of the issues with locations, but the story remains the same and it’s still going to be a beautiful film.’ TIDES – ‘What I love about Tides, is how it leads you straight into The Adventurers Diary. It’s a very moving film where Marion looks back on her life and the adventures she used to have but it’s not right until the very end that a question is thrown at you because suddenly, you’re in the unknown and you desperately want to know what happens next!’ What are you passionate about? ‘My family, playing the piano and acting. I’m what you call a competent amateur pianist. I’m not professional but I have played in public a few times and practice every day for at least two hours.’ Patricia has three children who she adores.

HOW DID THE ADVENTURERS DIARY COME ABOUT WITH PATRICIA LOVELAND? A few years back, Jean Maye in the cinema watching the film Quartet (http://www.imdb.com/ title/tt1441951/), directed by Dustin Hoffman. The film had many famous casts you will all recognise; Billy Conolly, Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Sheridan Smith etc., The role of Letitia Davis, and also a pianist was played by Patricia Loveland. As soon as she spotted her, Jean announced to two girlfriend’s sitting next to her that Patrica was the actress for a feature she was writing titled Shadows’ End. Of course, her friends laughed. Less than two weeks later, she was sitting drinking coffee with Patricia Loveland, and six weeks after that, she had shot the trailer for the film! Sadly, following the making of the Shadows’ End trailer, Jean became very ill, so everything went on hold for a few years. However, during this time, Patricia Loveland asked Jean if she would consider writing her a short film. She wanted to play a real nasty character for a change. Jean thought long and hard then promptly failed at the task! Instead, Jean presented Patricia with The Adventurers Diary! Jean wrote the story with Patricia in mind to play the star character, Marion Flemming. Jean said Patricia’s email response was great! Patricia thanked her for the script and told Jean it read really well and Marion was a great character for an actress to play because it took the character through so many emotions. Although parts of the story were sad, it also made her laugh. When Jean phoned her, Patricia said ‘Why wouldn’t I want to play this?I love it!’ That’s how Marion the adventurer was born! Well, this and the fact that Jean’s always been a bit of a sucker for fairy stories and emotionally driven films and as a screenwriter, her mission is to transform people into another world called ‘Story.’ So, what’s The Adventurers Diary story about? It’s about a woman full of adventure who decides to take one final journey. The story starts with an aurora of lights that awakens Marion from her sleep. It is here that this beautiful and compelling story begins. The Adventurer’s Diary is about Marion, an elderly woman who suddenly realises she’s missing the adventures she used to have and embarks on a journey. But is she making all of these decisions? Or were they made for her? Who or what is driving her forward? This is the mystery of this compelling and beautiful story.

Tides is about an elderly woman reminiscences about her life and the adventurers she used to have. Jean Maye wrote and produced this in the hope that it would encourage people to back the crowdfunding campaign for The Adventurers Diary. At the time, she did not anticipate this becoming a stand-alone film and winning awards but this is precisely what it has done! Director – Ben Wicks Ben is from Berkshire, UK. He has created numerous award-winning short films, music videos and more recently television pilots & concept reels along with a multitude of commercials and promos for some of the country biggest companies and institutions. His recent television pilot work has led to two of his projects currently being under consideration for a commission. Not wishing to be boxed into a certain genre, Ben’s recent short films have included a comedy, thriller and more recently a musical drama. His 2014 short film, Snapshot, was backed by Alzheimer’s Research UK and his recent musical drama, The Secret, set in

1943, is also being considered as a theatre show. Ben directed the award-winning prequel to The Adventurer’s Diary, Tides, in late 2017. Away from directing short films, Ben works in the AD department for film and television, having worked for Sky, BBC and Amazon to name but a few. 2016 he appeared on BBC2 in three episodes of The Hollow Crown together with Benedict Cumberbatch. Jamie trained at Dorset School of Acting. He is a versatile actor who started in theatre and now works predominantly in film and television. Known for committing roles with emotional intensity, stage work includes a nomination for Best Actor at the New Forest Drama Festival for playing Horst in Martin Sherman’s Bent, and performances at the prestigious Poole Lighthouse in A Streetcar Named Desire. He appears alongside Bonnie Wright (Harry Potter’s Ginny Weasley) in the children’s film “Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg?” The movie made the official selection of the BFI at the London Film Festival. Steve Coleman – Chauffer From 1999 to 2006 Steve worked as a stuntman for film, TV, music videos and live performances. In 2007 he began studying acting in London through private tuition and short courses. Steve then progressed to a full-time acting degree at the University of Northampton where he was trained in multiple acting methodologies. Steve is also a Wushu (martial arts) athlete and has won the Great Britain Championships more than seven times, the European Championships twice and was also a five-time gold medalist at the World Chin Woo Championships in 2002. Currently, Steve is busy working on new roles for film and TV whilst continuing to compete in Wushu for Great Britain. Megan Lockhurst – Travel Agent Megan is a Canadian born actress who has been working professionally in the industry for the past four years. She has been involved in some recent projects, such as spy thriller series The Doorman, feature films Sitting Under The Chestnut Tree and The Point of No Return, and has just been cast in the US Vice franchise series. She is looking forward to playing the role of the Air Hostess in The Adventurer’s Diary and seeing Jean’s fantastic story come to life. Kathleen Ray – Supporting Actress Having been trained in the theatre, and enjoyed 30 years in rep, Kathleen has recently embarked on the exciting and challenging journey of film and TV. Her credits include Bev, in Abigail’s Party, Melinda in The Recruiting Officer and Mrs Chieveley in An Ideal Husband, all at The Watermill Theatre, Newbury Berkshire. She was also in Murder Casebook with Fred Dinenage for Sky TV. Kathleen is currently in rehearsal for a horror film, Seven Boxes to be released on Amazon.

TIDES is the pre-film to THE ADVENTURERS DIARY Tides is about an elderly woman reminiscencesÂ about her life and the adventurers she used to have. Jean Maye wrote and produced this in the hope that it would encourage people to back the crowdfunding campaign for The Adventurers Diary. At the time, she did not anticipate this becoming a stand-alone film and winning awards but this is precisely what it has done! Beverley Reilly – Marion (50’s)

Beverley works full time as a dentist. She’s always carried a love for films and Jean believes a secret desire to act. So when Jean asked her friend if she would like to play the role of Marion (50’s), she jumped at the opportunity then basically ‘smashed’ it! From watching the film the you would think was was a pro!

Joe Hughes – Fred 20’s

Joe Hughes trained for 3 years at the Manchester School of theatre. Since graduating he has since appeared in a variety of film, tv and theatre. He recently appeared on ITV’s ‘Girlfriends’ and has also been working on the new original Netflix series ‘The Innocents’ released in August. Other notable tv credits include ‘Holby City, ‘in the ‘club’ and ‘fresh meat.’ In October 2017, he was delighted to play the role of Fred (20’s), in the Award-winning short film TIDES, the prequel film to The Adventurers Diary.

Grace Parry – Marion 20’s Grace was born and raised in the picturesque County of Norfolk. Age 19 Grace made the move to London, to attend Fourth Monkey Theatre Company’s ‘Year Of The Monkey’, a one year acting training and repertory course, enjoying a sell out success at the Edinburgh Fringe with One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. She has since starred in several British independent features, shorts and series. She is best known for her role as mean girl ‘Katy Gilmore’ in series Night School; based on the international bestselling books by CJ Daugherty, fantasy series REN and comedy feature ‘The Comedian’s Guide To Survival’, alongside James Buckley and Paul Kaye. Grace produced her first short in 2017 ‘Parting Gifts’- which she also starred in alongside Cian Barry (Nina Forever). Her Company ‘Tacenda Pictures’ was also created- as a means of telling “stories that matter” and creating the acting roles she craved. Grace is a versatile young actor, capable of adapting to any role from straight drama to comedy. Grace is also a member of Spotlight and the actor’s union Equity.

Abi was born in England July 2005. She started performing at a young age and already has many credits to her name. Her experience ranges from radio and commercial advertising to a lead musical role. From short film roles to mainstream TV. Abi has a fun bubbly character but has the ability to portray many emotions whilst acting. She is naturally talented but has stage school and dance school training to back that up. She can sing, act and dance. Most importantly she knows how to behave on set and stays happy and upbeat throughout long hours of filming. She enjoys every experience and treats all jobs with professionalism.
