If You Must Skip the Safari … Still Buy the Jacket

Once upon a time, I always wore a suit on a commercial airplane. For that matter, other men used to do the same. That, though, is definitely not the case any longer, when air travel, like a lot of social functions that used to have men dressed more formally, now sees blue jeans or even shorts. Granted, on occasion, usually on shorter flights, I still wear a suit if just because I’ve discovered doing so often can guarantee better service and even complimentary travel upgrades. For longer trips, though, especially if overseas, I now usually opt for more comfortable and functional travel wear without completely surrendering all fashion sense by resorting to sweats. Color me usually in my dependable safari, or sometimes called ”bush”, jacket, which is an indispensible piece of my permanent wardrobe. Usually constructed of lightweight material, like cotton drill, poplin, colored cream or khaki, with convenient shoulder epaulets, and four or more “bellow” pockets, it has long been associated with men hunting wild animals in the African bush. “Great White Hunters” and stereotypical he-men, like Ernest Hemmingway, and Robert Ruark, were often photographed wearing one. Even today, when cameras have often replaced firearms, you can see it worn in the wild. Another, perhaps, more hip reference, is the in-your-face screaming-red one worn by Marvel Comics’ Wonder Man in issue #167. In the end, you need neither be headed out on safari, nor be a Super Hero, to benefit from this comfortable jacket believed originally to have been derived from a piece of military apparel worn by British troops stationed in the tropics.. Its roomy pockets are ideal for keeping track of those myriad “things” so necessary for successful and seamless travel. What’s more, combine it with a dress shirt and a tie, and it’ll allow you entry into just about any restaurant with a dress code; doing double-duty in this day and age where airlines have taken to charging for every extra bag, requiring you to watch what, and how much, you pack. No need, either, for those fashion-conscious individuals among us to worry about being out of date. The safari jacket is a designer staple on the men’s-fashion runways of London, Paris, New York, and Milan. Just this year, I saw them included in the Massimo Dutti, Chalayan, Berluti, and Burberry collections, among others.

Twice, recently, I found myself being introduced as “William Maltese, New Age Wellness Guru”, as the result of my having co-authored not one but two recent self-help books — MEN, SEX, AND FOOD: WHY HEARING A WOMAN CAN LEAD TO DEEPER LOVE, reviewed in the February 2016 issue of this magazine, (plus) CONSCIOUS ENERGY, HEALING AND MIRACLES. I can and am an advocate, though, of the belief, as set forth in this book, that all life, as we know it, is a manifestation of Conscious Energy existent since The Big Bang, all healing occurring on a cellular level; all of us able to benefit from understanding our intertwining and integral relationship with the Cosmos. Realization of the connection between proved science and the human experience, as well as between humans and the reality they individually create, as expounded within this book, can, I believe, provide a simple, yet effective personal blueprint for healing by alleviating pain, suffering, and mental anguish, possibly without drugs, machines, health products, and even physical contact.

from Project Runway at New York Fashion Week The Nature of a designer Innovative. Eco-Friendly. Avant-garde. Distinctive. Fashion-Forward. Organic. Unique. Leader. Showstopper. These are just a few words that come to mind when you hear the name Patricia Michaels. For over 20 years, Patricia Michaels, has been producing one-of-a-kind couture that defies fashion trends. Patricia Michaels will go in NY for the travel exhibition "Native Fashion Now" 2-2-17 at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in NYC. The following week Patricia will debut her Fall?winter collection during NY Fashion 2-14-2017. Most recently, Patricia has gained national recognition for Peabody Essex Museum show, "Native Fashion Now" 2015 and international attention after receiving the highly prestigious Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Arts and Design Award from the museum board of directors in New York City in November 2014. She is the very first recipient of this award, an historic achievement. After her successful run on the Emmy Award winning season 11 of “Project Runway” in 2012 where she won the first runner up title, she was recently asked back to the “Project Runway All Stars”, Season 4. Her “Project Runway” debut was a historical first for a Native American designer and has brought her many new opportunities to showcase her sought out fashion and textiles. In 2013, Patricia was awarded the "Taos Citizen of the Year Award" and was presented with the "Eugene Crawford Memorial Peace Pipe Award" by LaDonna Harris of Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO). She also was awarded the Letter of Recognition of Achievements by the NM State Senator's Office and Senator Tom Udall. She was also Named "BEST of the WEST 2013" by Cowboys & Indians Magazine. Patricia was the first Native American Designer to have a collection at the Lincoln Center during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC. Her Fall/Winter 2013 "TREES" Collection wowed the audiences far and wide. PM Waterlily later had a Couture Capsule Collection in September, 2013 during New York Fashion Week as part of “Runway the Real Way” at Yotel Hotel. Her Ready-to-Wear Spring/Summer 2014 "SEEDS" Collection included plus sizes 12-26 and debuted October, 2013 in Santa Fe, NM. The previous year, she had shown her designs at Bryant Park in New York during Fashion Week, as part the production by UNRESERVED: American Indian Fashion and Art Alliance, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. After participating in “Project Runway”, actor, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, star of TV'S hit show Modern Family, contacted Patricia to become a guest designer for his line of bowties- JTF Bowties. The proceeds for Patricia’s ties went to The Freedom to Marry Act, in NM. Patricia has continued to work with Ferguson to form “Tie The Knot”, with proceeds to aid the ACLU of NM & Why Marriage Matters, New Mexico. Her bowtie’s are one of the top ten best sellers.

Coffee comes from extremely humble beginnings as a drink used to keep monks awake during long sessions of prayer, to a drink that has fueled revolutions, and more modernly, has been able to give billions of people the needed pep to get through a long day of work. Worldwide, over 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed per day, making coffee the second most traded commodity on the globe, with oil taking first place. Currently, Brazil is the largest coffee producing nation, and grows and produces over 2.7 million metric tons of coffee per year, with Vietnam coming in at second place with over 1.3 million tons per year. Specialty coffee is a term thrown around a lot nowadays, and generally refers to coffee, or coffee brands, that focus on quality, ethical sourcing practices, and complete transparency with the buyer and growers. These companies will provide just about any information to the buyer, such as where the coffee comes from, how it was processed, and much more. Completely different from the massive supermarket coffee brands. The majority of coffee grown is of either the arabica or robusta variety, with each being more or less popular in different parts of the world. Some of the best places to grow coffee lie between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, so essentially within a certain distance of Earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s equator. The climate of this area is very humid, lush, and has predictable weather, which means that coffee can be consistently grown. Some of these growing regions near the equator include Guatemala, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and many others. Though, coffee can be grown outside of this area and still taste fantastic. For example, many farms inside of Vietnam are able to grow and produce excellent coffee. Once the coffee cherries are ready, they are picked and then processed one of two ways. The next step is how the coffee is sourced. There are many type of sourcing, such as Fair Trade and Direct Trade, that aim to give the coffee farmers the most help that they can possibly have. The Fair Trade program uses co-ops and other services like unions, to provide farmers with the needed education, equipment, and protection from being offered too little for their crops. The Direct Trade program utilizes a fantastic relationship directly between the roasting company and the farmer, meaning that the roasters will buy directly from the farmers, as opposed to buying from a third party company. In most cases, especially for specialty coffee, the coffee is roasted in small batches. This allows the farmer to make as much money as possible and seeing how little the farmer actually sees in profit, this is important. After the coffee has been sourced and roasted, it is then either sold to other companies, or sold directly from the roaster in most cases in the form of a locally operated cafe. These smaller local cafes are usually referred to places for hipsters to get together and drink coffee, but should not be avoided by the average coffee consumer at all, as the coffee served in places like this is usually some of the highest quality. Coffee is the foundation of many nations, and over recent years, has become more than just something to drink for energy, but a drink capable of bringing people together to share new experiences.

So tell me Darlink, have you ever been so far down in your spirit, that you would need to look up to see the dash of a Lamborghini sports car? No, seriously, life sometimes happens and we don’t feel like doing arabesques through the lavender plants. It hurts. Someone we love has left? That could be a death or their choice. Times feel hard and maybe even sad. Finances are not where they need to be? Whatever the situation, to say that things were a challenge would actually be an upgrade to the current reality. It’s is amazing that the world goes on, and to attempt to share with someone is often met with, “Hey you go girl call- me if you need anything.” Or there is the person who has pierced your ears with their own drama for years, who really can’t imagine that you might need some assurance.” It is not my intention to tell anyone how to live their lives (except for kids and a few dozen close friend). However, for your consideration, try this on for fit; never share with anyone who you would not want to romp naked with or loan your credit card to. That pretty much is everyone in my life. It’s like giving power to a politician, who wants to be King. Assuming you would like some insight on how to get through, or even fly above these times- I offer some suggestions for your consideration. Know you have the power inside you to not be held captive by your own thoughts. Remembering that we create our own reality will be a good first step. If we indeed create our own reality, then the good news is we can change it. Not just my idea but many people smarter than myself. The idea is to take back the power we all have. It’s not the warrior power but the quiet, peaceful power that we left in Hawaii on the last trip there. If you can find a quiet spot away from the world for just five minutes it would be perfect and also highly unlikely. So try this- put your designer sunglasses on close your eyes and breathe. Breathe like you are expelling all of the garbage inside. Turn loose of reality and what you believe to be the current crisis. No one has power over you that you haven’t allowed them to have. You are a child of the Universe/Spirit/ God energy. Nothing is stronger than that. Breathe and turn loose. Continue until someone stands over you checking for a heartbeat, or you have finished. Be your own person, within the confines of your job-relationship or world. Do what has to be done. Here is the big one—change the way you look at what is going on or must be done. Make it your idea and your choice. Finally –continue to breathe your own air in your own self-created space. Oh yes, one more thing. Always give yourself the best your world has to offer.
