Harlequin SuperRomances 2, 23, 59 … and I WILLIAM MALTESE

A question I’m often asked is if I really wrote for romance publishing giant Harlequin House. The answer is yes. I was just back from another visit to Machu Picchu, in Peru, and to the Amazon Basin, in Brazil, and, realizing I’d yet to have any kind of heterosexual romance novel in my writing repertoire, I decided to give a Harlequin sweet-romance book a try, basing its story-line on my recent freshin-my-mind trip to South America. Following the Harlequin tried-and-true formula — girl meets boy, girl looses boy, girl gets boy, happy-ever-after ending — I wrote the book and submitted it, figuring its publication with Harlequin was a long shot if just because the publisher’s whole list, up until then, was composed of re-issued books from Brit publisher Mills and Boon. Not to mention the Harlequin motto: “We publish books by women for women.” Obviously, I wasn’t a woman.” Frankly, I was gobsmacked when Harlequin responded favorably. They liked the unique locale. They liked my feels-like-you’re-there attention to detail. They liked my hero and heroine, as well as their interaction. BUT they wondered if I could be persuaded to make the book longer, develop some minor characters, as well as enlarge some minor plot-lines … and, last but not least — duh?! — spice the book up with some sex. As for the latter, they had no doubt that I was more than capable, considering the number of the popular heterosexual erotica books I already had under my belt. Talk about the right place, at the right time, Harlequin was about to launch a longer, sexier, series of Harlequin SuperRomance originals, and they were desperately looking for the allimportant follow-up book to book #1, the latter scheduled to hit the bookstores in just a few weeks. Would I consider flying to Harlequin headquarters, Toronto, Canada, and work one-onone with an editor to make something happen?

I went to Toronto. I worked one-on-one with my assigned editor, Rosemary Aubert. We made things happen, finished the book, LOVE’S EMERALD FLAME. I was assigned the female pseudonym, Willa Lambert (I would have preferred Wilhelmina, but it was considered too long for the book spine and cover). Harlequin insisted on the female pseudo, in that there was no way, they said, that readers would believe any man could accurately portray the emotions of any woman. Despite Editor-in-Chief, George Glay, thinking the heroine on the book’s cover came off way too icy for his tastes, and for that of a Harlequin romance, the book came out as #2 in the SuperRomance series and enjoyed major success, with a rave blurb in “Publishers Weekly”, and eventual pick-up for publication by Harlequin affiliates world-wide. I still remember being in Kyoto, Japan, for an exhibition of Pacific Northwest artists, when the book was published in Japanese. There followed my SuperRomance #23, FROM THIS BELOVED HOUR, based upon my time spent in Egypt; then, my SuperRomance 59, LOVE’S GOLDEN SPELL, that tapped my time spent in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and the Republic of South Africa. Each of my books for Harlequin enjoying world-wide success. Why only the three? (1) Every beginning has its ending. (2) My editor, Rosemary Aubert, left Harlequin to fulfill her real desire to write books of her own, having since become a very successful author in her own right. (3) “Editor-in-Chief, George Glay, left, too, causing a change in the editorial hierarchy of the company that raised to a position of power someone with whom I had a less than satisfactory relationship. (4) I was offered a can’t-pass-up opportunity to see even more of the world, via some extensive travel. When all three books eventually went out of print, I asked for, and received, all rights, and the trio was immediately accepted for re-issue by mainstream publisher Wildside Press, under my own William Maltese bi-line, where they remain in-print to this very day and can easily be accessed by you (come on, now!) for the viably enjoyable reads they still provide.

Interview with Style and Confidence Coach, Julia Rees By Wanda Julian Today, we are interviewing Style & Confidence Coach, Julia Rees. Julia was born in the UK, but has lived in France for more than 25 years and combines her understated English charm (and accent) with her knowledge of French Style to help women become the best version of themselves. Can you tell us a little more about yourself?

I grew up in Liverpool, England before moving to Cambridge where I studied Pathology. I moved to France in 1993 and retrained as a secondary school teacher, before becoming a Personal Stylist in 2016. I took an online life coaching course during the Covid confinement so I could add more value to my services, and I am now a Style & Confidence Coach. I am passionate about helping women transform their personal and professional lives by (re)discovering their style, confidence and inner beauty so that they can become the best version of themselves, tap into their true potential and live their lives fully. I have been through many of the life changes that women commonly face: I have had two children (and I wasn’t one of the women whose body bounces back to its pre-pregnancy state a mere 6 weeks after giving birth), I have moved my life to another country (and one where I didn’t speak the language to begin with) and I have suffered my own share of health and confidence issues. I have also changed careers with the corresponding need for a change in image from pathology student to Finance Director to High School teacher and finally to Style & Confidence coach. I believe that all these life events have led me to an understanding of the problems we all face at various stages in our life and I have developed a six step process to help women find their style, confidence and inner beauty so that they can look and feel their best every day and live their lives to their highest potential. My unique approach to Styling means that I don’t just tell you what you should be wearing, but I give you the tools to discover your own unique personal style, and the process to change the way you look and feel FOREVER! 2

Can you tell me a bit more about your six step process?

The 6 step “Style and Confidence Transformation” coaching program teaches you how to dress for your personality, your unique body shape and your complexion, as well as how to fall in love with your wardrobe, without spending a fortune, and I also show you how to make shopping fun again! We will also tackle any limiting beliefs and confidence issues that may be holding you back. At the end of the program, you will be more confident in your new style, know how to dress for your body shape and know the colours that will make you sparkle. You will also have a wardrobe full of clothes that you love and will know how to associate them to put together stunning looks for all occasions.

During the mentoring program, I will help you develop a ‘Style Vision Board’ and we will create your personalized “Style Bible”, with all the tips and tricks adapted to your style personality and your specific body shape and colouring, so you can always “Be your own Stylist”. “I’ve learned ‘how to’ find my style and my confidence and now I want to help other women confidently step into their new style, and see the woman they always knew themselves to be when they look in the mirror....... forever! I’ve been where you are! I understand your struggles as I’ve had them myself and I know my step by step process works.” 3 Have you always had an interest in Style ? I’ve always been interested in Style, but the idea of a career in style began in 2015 when I experienced “fitting room” meltdown first-hand on a shopping trip with my daughter in Paris. I had been looking forward to it for ages, but hadn’t taken into account the fact that I had been ill for a few months and had put on weight! I can remember taking a pile of clothes into the changing room as usual, full of excitement. And then came the shock! I had no idea what styles suited me anymore, I couldn’t fit into the size I used to wear, and it was ‘hello to dressing room meltdown’, and baggy t-shirts! And all of a sudden, shopping was no longer any fun! I don’t know who was more shocked – me or my daughter! I decided to take a Personal Stylist training course so that I could rediscover my style and get my confidence back, and I then decided to take a leap into the unknown and launch my own styling company and ‘Style with Julia’ was born to help other women find their style and confidence. I started by providing “done for you” services, such as color analysis, body shape analysis, wardrobe detox and personal shopping, but I soon realized that I missed the “coaching” aspects of the teaching profession and so I took a Life Coaching course and “Style with Julia” evolved into a Style and Coaching Service. I have just launched VIRTUAL style coaching in July 2020, so my services are now available WHEREVER in the world you live! 4

How do you want women to feel after working with you?

I want the women who work with me to feel confident, empowered and ready to take on whatever life throws at them. As a result of working with me, you will not only look good, but I will restore your confidence to make you feel good, and this will impact all areas of your life, and my aim is to ensure that you don’t need me again, although you may want to get in touch for a chat. I believe every woman deserves to look good and feel good about herself regardless of her age, color, shape or size. Image matters and I am passionate about helping women to harness the power of style and learn to use clothes as a tool to increase their confidence and get the life they want.

So, do you believe that Style can influence your life?

Absolutely, your style communicates who you are, what you value and what your dreams and desires are and it takes just 7 seconds for someone to form an opinion about you. We are all judged on our appearance, and it probably won’t come as a surprise to you to know that women are judged more harshly than men! This isn’t fair, but as we know it’s true, we can make it work in our favour and make sure that our clothes are sending the right messages. Your style can open the door or get it slammed in your face! 6 I notice you have been in France for over a quarter of a century. Do you think this has influenced your style? Yes, definitely! French women are renowned for their effortless chic, and whilst we can’t and shouldn’t “copy” anyone’s style, there are some tips and tricks we can learn to get the effortless, understated elegance that the French are renowned for. I offer free webinars for “How to get effortless French chic” and “How to dress like a Parisian”, and you can find out more about these in my Facebook group. 7 What clothes should women steer clear of? Anything that doesn’t fit or flatter them. I think that many women don’t know and dress for their body type. They want to stay in fashion and wear the latest trends, but many of these trends just don’t work for them! I’m convinced that when you have mastered the art of dressing for your body type, getting dressed in the morning will be just that much easier, and you will enjoy receiving compliments on your new look. And, this is why I offer a “how to dress for your body type” coaching program, as I think that many women overlook this and a few simple tweaks can instantly elevate your style. It’s also a shorter program and so enables women to have a “taster” of working with me before committing to the signature “Style and Confidence Six Step Transformation”. 8 What are your aspirations for the future? Where would you like to see your business 5 years from now and are there any imminent plans for that you would like to share? I would like to offer a more extensive range of coaching, and also to collaborate with business coaches to offer an entire package to help the career woman, in terms of her style & confidence, but also in terms of her career development. Steven A. Scroggins is an award winning, internationally collected artist working in a wide variety of materials including: oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, collage/assemblage, photography and ceramics. His life experience includes, in part, Art Instructor, Television Producer, Radio Commentator, Gallerist, Pastor, Poet, Landscape Designer, Lyricist, Musician and Chef. Steve was born 1950 in Indianapolis, Indiana and raised his early years by maternal grandparents. His grandfather was a hillbilly from Kentucky who could not read or write yet has proven to be the wisest man Steve has ever known. His grandmother was a kind and vibrant Cherokee. With great pride his grandfather taught Steve the difference between tools and toys. Together they spent many precious hours on the back porch “whittling” and practicing, what turned out to be, the basic skills of sculpture. His grandfather worked as a machinist but for extra money installed wallpaper. As a young boy Steve would accompany his grandfather on weekends and helped paste and hang these walls of paper. This experience instilled in the artist an instinctive ability to work with collage and assemblage, as well as, a natural inclination to create art on a monumental scale. His grandmother shared her love of flora with the young boy as they worked together tending the array of beautiful flowers that encircled their small rural backyard. The bright colors and tempting textures are still emblazoned on his heart and mind, often becoming integral parts of his paintings. When did you start acting? Dove: Last year. Kate: Yeah Dove actually was first acting in our first film together called Just Your Average Couple. We did it in 2019, summer of 2019. And, that was her first acting role. And, mine was back in, I guess, 2010. I was twenty-one and I was just acting out a scene with a friend. It was a scene from Shakespeare's Othello. Dove: Actually, I remember a little further back in high school in 2002. Even though, I had eighteen years in between. I did a live action diorama type role play, I guess you call it in front of about 5000 people. Kate: Oh, wow. I didn't know that. *Laughs* Dove: Yeah. What inspires you? Dove: Change. Telling a narrative that inspires change. Or, the queer community. Kate: I would say what inspires me would be other films. I'm really a cinema lover. I love all things cinema, all things film. I love reading movie scripts. I love watching movies every single day, sometimes multiple times a day as Dove knows. And, I guess, who would inspire me would be Kubrick, Ridley Scott, Miranda July, Kathryn Bigelow. Really just great filmmakers. And, I want there to be more queer representation and people of color directing films. Dove: I would say also another thing that inspires me is history, reading about the pioneers for the modern day gay rights movementâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;people like Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson who kind of paved the way and had to fight. And, watching their documentary definitely makes me want to create more content that's uplifting for the community. What are you passionate about? Dove: My fiancee. I am passionate about social change, social justice, mainly to influence those in the queer community and those who aren't that are curious and eager to learn. Kate: I'm passionate, of course, about Dove as well. The feeling is mutual. And, as far as film goes, I'm passionate about just touching, moving stories that make me feel something. I'm always wanting to feel more and to experience a wider range of human emotion. And, I'm passionate about anything that makes me feel that. Tell me about your films. Kate: Our first film together was Just Your Average Couple, as we said earlier. My first film that I made on my own was...I think, I was...how old was I? I think I was twenty-three years old, and I made it one day when I was bored in the house. And, I just made this kind of expressionist, experimental short film about existential dread, essentially. And, that was the first one I made on my own as a filmmaker. It was very crudely developed. But, it was fun. Dove and I plan on making a lot of music videos and such. Do you want to talk, baby? Dove: I think my first film wasn't quite a film. It was just me getting behind a somewhat cheap, visual camera. And, filming random things like ants and cats and trying to experiment with under water scenes with a little, cheapo, under water camera I had. And, I think it was a Coolpix camera was one of the first cameras I had. And, just trying to edit them and put something on Youtube. Kate: Yeah, I would say that being a content creator on Youtube is also what I've been about as far as my films go. And, also, I would say that our films are just, you know, about wanting to create more queer content. Dove: Especially, featuring other people, people that are not us, and telling their story.

What is your latest project you are working on? Kate: So, this winter to about springtime of next year, Dove and I will be filming a web-series. It's going to be about a non-binary person that I'm playing and a trans woman that Dove is playing, who meet and fall in love in the beauty of nature. And, they're brought together by their love of photography and modeling. And, it's just a tender love story with a kind of bittersweet ending. Dove: We've also got a music video. Kate: Several music videos. Dove: Yeah, several music videos that we're going to be...I'm not sure when we're going to shoot them. But, we're going to squeeze some time in. I'm also in the middle of editing another short that Kate and a friend worked on. You want to talk about that? Kate: Yeah. So, we performed a scene Blue is the Warmest Color with the actress Sara Pittock. She's a local, Portland actress. She's just fantastic. Just a very fun person to act with. And, we're just finishing the last touches of that scene. How can we help? Kate: Well, as you know through this correspondance with Wanda, we're going to be announcing our Kickstarter in October. Everything is hand made by myself. My style is literally all over the place, from elegant to a Starbucks run, just like myself. Each piece is crafted with love and positive energy. Mostly all of them are made up of Sterling silver, glass beads, different crystals, and especially Swarovski Crystals. I may have a slight obsession with the Swarovski crystals. Some pieces are more simple than others. And no 2 items are similar… so no one will have the same piece that you do. When you wear my creations, they really have a way of making you feel yourself. A bit of a confidence booster. I’ve had plenty of people message me after receiving their purchases, and tell me how lovely and “cool” feeling the crystals are against their skin… and that’s what I like. When my creations wrap around your wrist or hang from your neck or ear, and they feel so cold and nice, and bring a huge warm genuine smile to your face when you see yourself in the mirror. And when the sun hits the crystals, they shine a whole new shine. The photos do these babies no justice, but when you open that box and see them in person, it’s unreal how much prettier they are in person. I used to watch my grandmother for hours making jewelry. When I was a kid I told myself that I would have my own boutique just like Mamaw!! My love for creating and crafting, with anything really, came from my father’s side of the family.
