END-OF-SUMMER SALAD WILLIAM MALTESE Every end of summer, looking for something light and refreshing to eat, while the temperatures are on the verge of falling, I’m inevitably drawn to an all-time favorite pear salad. It has been part of my life for a very long time. While many of my favorite recipes have been gleaned from my lifetime of world travel, gathered while horse-back riding the Argentinean pampas, trekking the Peruvian Inca Road, surfing Korean beaches, or dining with indigenous Mato Grosso native populations in jungle clearings, this one heralds back to a childhood of picnicking in the orchard of a family friend who grew pears in midWashington State, USA. Fresh pears were picked right off the tree, an early memory of mine being lifted into the leafy canopy to take hold of a ripe pear and retrieve it for preparation and on-site consumption. Which, I’m seldom, these days, able to do, having to substitute, as likely will you, pears from the grocery store which seldom deliver the taste treat of orchard-ripened fruit, directly plucked from the tree, but can still provide, nonetheless, a very tasty dining experience. Pear-Orchard Salad Huckleberry Vinaigrette (You can home-make this from the “Berry Vinaigrette” recipe in my Even Gourmands Have to Diet) 4 c romaine leaves, torn into bite-size pieces 2 fresh Bosc (or Bartlett) pears 1 oz bleu cheese, crumbled 4 tsps walnuts, toasted and chopped 4 TBS cranberries, dried Put ½ c of Huckleberry Vinaigrette in the bottom of a large bowl. Add the romaine leaves and toss. Divide into 4 plates. Core but do not peel the pears. Slice pears lengthways and divide slices among the 4 plates. Sprinkle ¼ oz blue cheese, crumbled, on each serving. Sprinkle 1 t walnuts, toasted and chopped, on each serving. Sprinkle 1 T of cranberries, dried, on each serving. Can you tell me a little bit about the book? It’s a quick read of mostly one page chapters. I attempt to show that the situations we face are as hard as we want to make them. Humor is used to mainly poke fun at myself. The answers being that we already have our own answers and we are not alone in the Universe. How did you come up with the title? Dragons, Butterflies & Buddha The dragon signifies the fire and power in our lives. Fire being what might look like hard things to deal with. The butterfly seems to have a random flight pattern, lands on beautiful flowers and makes us smile to see it. That would be the joyful encounters that happen in our lives. Usually these signings are brief and then the butterfly fly’s on (quick smiles and life goes on). With the Buddha (God icon), comes peace and resolution. We create our own reality and because of that we can change it’ll three things work together, for perfect order. Where can our readers get your book from? Amazon carries it including the Kindle version. How long have you been a writer? I think Grade school was my first attempt. Where can we find your blog? No one can deny the connection between fashion and the music industries. Not only have there always been fashion-plates, like Cher, Rod Stewart, and David Bowie (and his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust), who have had eager fans watching in avid anticipation of what they’d wear next, but a whole mini-clothing industry has risen up around the souvenir t-shirts, complete with band logos, sold at just about every concert venue. Contessa’s Court, therefore, was intrigued when William Maltese’s latest mainstream novel, Rock, Roll, and Die, just out from traditional publisher Wildside Press, crossed our desk. Contessa’s Court: Why a book about the music industry? William Maltese: You’ve undoubtedly heard the old saw about how a writer writes best when writing about a subject with which he’s familiar. I’ve been around the music business for a very long time. My cousin chummed around with Elvis Presley. I had a nodding acquaintance with Kurt Cobain. I have a friend who used to be an official die-hard Bon Jovi groupie. And back in my Studio 54 heyday, I was always running into the likes of Mick Jagger, Elton John, Tina Turner, Grace Jones, Madonna, ad infinitum. As far back as 1975, I wrote the music-themed m/m BEAT THE MAN DOWN which has since become a pulp-paperback collector’s item, selling for several hundred bucks a pop, whenever it appears on the rare-book scene. CC: And you’ve interviewed more than a few contemporary international bands on your No Boundaries Radio Show which you and your co-host Joanne “JoJo” Crockett air to a world-wide audience every Wednesday night on the para-x radio network. WM: It was just that, as matter of fact, which was one leg of the trifecta which decided me to write Rock, Roll, and Die.

CC: The other two reasons being? WM: My awareness of a very talented young men, in the music business, whose name any music fan would likely recognize, who’s undergoing a traumatic sexual identity crises that I still foresee as eventually not ending well. It’s a subject I’ve dealt with before, in my Stud Draqual Mystery series; although, the protagonist there is more able to deal with the problem than Travis Butcher in Rock, Roll, and Die.

CC: Bringing us to incentive three. WM: Quite frankly, what with my having over two-hundred books published, many of the more recent ones having been romances, I suddenly found myself grown tired of happy-ever-after endings. Life isn’t a bowl of cherries. Crap happens. People don’t always get things all neatly worked out in the end. And survival in the music industry, where so much money, attention, adulation, and temptation are in play, can be difficult for even someone who has his shit all together. CC: So, readers shouldn’t expect our hero in Rock, Roll, and Die to ride peacefully off into the sunset. WM: Not all the characters go under. Some are better able to cope than others. But, as in real life, some do, yes, definitely fall off the edge.

Well yes, maybe-- I know I do! But how about the times when you are in jeans and your son’s old sweatshirt from High school and the sole is coming loose from your turquoise high top tennis shoes? I can’t seem to get past the need to look good regardless of what the body has morphed into. Years go by and gravity has had its way with me. Still when I shop I see a size four and reasonably perky body parts. I have introduced legislation to ban iridescent lighting in dressing room. (Well, I have thought about doing it). Is it possible to maintain an attitude of cutting edge fashion sense at all times? No, but it is still a thrill to look at the beautiful latest fashions and appreciate the great design that goes into their creation. It is no longer important to me to have the right shoes always but I still want to know what the right shoes are, and where to get them if I want to. So let’s consider just what this inner beauty thing is that older, heavy people talk about when they can’t fit into the size zero being offered at the boutiques. The name Bongo Republic came from where I was born Tanzania in the Island well known as Zanzibar but the name Bongo is a nick name for Tanzania in general no matter which part of the country you represent Bongo is a slang word for BRAIN. What we believe no matter how smart or affluent you are you have to use your brain to survive and makes two ends meet. I decide to rebrand and redesign Bongo Republic the reason is I felt It wasn’t represent both side of the world the side where I was born and the side where I am living now. I do believe I catch that moment now and feel proud and represent both side of the isle.

Said Mgambo is a designer with the heart of an islander, the mind of an entrepreneur, and the experience of a world-traveler. Born in the East-African island of Zanzibar (Tanzania), Said exhibited artistic talent and interest in fashion from an early age. He received formal sketch training during primary school from a prominent artist of Zanzibar. For a time, however, he abandoned creative pursuits for what he thought were more practical goals. In 1996 he left Zanzibar for Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, to pursue a diploma in Management. Then in 1999 he emigrated to the United States to earn a degree in Computer Information Systems, which he accomplished cum laude. Said’s creative spirit and passion for fashion could not long be contained. Upon discovering Adobe Illustrator, the creative spark inside him was rekindled and given a new outlet in graphic design. Soon after, Said began applying his design work to t-shirts and clothing. The influence for his personal style is a combination of his own cosmopolitan experience and capturing the moment of his immediate surroundings. Diverse clients have responded to and used his designs, such as music industry insiders Melvin Brown of Konvict Muzik and HUSH Sicarri of Illa Music. Said also produced an iconic piece that branded Gordon Flynn as the Godfather of London Fashion and has been featured in magazines and TV throughout England. Using the ChiddyGraphics moniker for his design work, Said garners clients from across the globe. In 2008 he launched the Bongo Republic clothing brand in honor of his homeland. Said

and his countrymen give Tanzania the affectionate nickname Bongo, which is a slang term for â&#x20AC;&#x153;brain,â&#x20AC;? because they believe that no matter what advantages or disadvantages you are born with, you must use your brain to survive and thrive. With this lesson learned in his youth, Said now puts it into practice by combining the passion and energy of his heart with the intelligence and savvy of his mind into all of his designs.

William Maltese Knot for You? In this day and age, wherein I’ve spotted people wearing blue jeans and t-shirts to the opera, it’s easier than it once was for any man to stand out in such a crowd, if and when he wants to stand out, by merely wearing a suit. In instances where people surprise and wear suits, standing out may require a man’s suit to be bespoke, or, at least, altered specifically for the wearer. Nothing stands out more than something tailored for the anatomy it wraps. Find yourself in a crowd of bespoke-clothed men, though, and you’ll often have to try and find something else to distinguish you from the crowd. Presently, I’ve adopted my own way to configure my tie, which I’ve come to call the William Maltese Knot. While I’ve encountered some genuinely complicated ways to end up with intricate knots for neckwear, I’ve opted for the make-it-simple-stupid approach which I’ve found works perfectly well for me … and may work as well for you. 1. Lift the collar of your shirt. Place the tie, finished side up, around the back of your neck, both ends hanging forward over your chest, with the result that the wide end hangs down on the side of your dominant hand, a little more than twice as low as does the thin end. 2. Cross the wide end once over the front of the thin end, toward your non-dominant hand, and bring it around back of the thin end a few inches below your neck. 3. Slip the wide end up, around front and down through the “V” between the tie and your neck, and pull it down and out from behind. 4. Wrap the wide end around the front toward your non-dominant side, and then continue to wrap the wide end around the back toward your dominant hand. 5. From the back slip the wide end up and through V between your neck and the tie, pulling it out the front. 6. Both hands positioned behind the tie, non-dominant hand securing the end of the thin strip, dominant hand on the knot, push upward on the knot to tighten the tie around your neck. 7. Lower your shirt collar.

MIRROR, MIRROR, ON THE WALL … ON THE CEILING … ON THE … by WILLIAM MALTESE

Like Narcissus, who gazed upon his reflection in a calm pool and immediately became enamored with himself, I confess to having a life-time love relationship with mirrors. Not only from historical and mythological perspectives: ancient Hebrew soldiers using burnished metal to blind the enemy; Greeks concentrating sunlight to burn Roman ships; Perseus viewing Medusa in the mirrored surface of his shield while he beheaded her; a broken mirror heralding seven years of bad luck; Alice through the looking glass; the Wicked Queen in “Snow White” forever asking her mirror: “Who’s the fairest of them all?” Color me as one of the first people to fit his bedroom ceiling with mirrors. And who of us can forget the iconic mirror balls from the memorable Age of Disco and the Mirror Ball Trophy of today television’s “Dancing with the Stars”?! A favorite story about my mother is how I once took her to a very fancy restaurant for lunch, after which she asked me if I’d known the couple sitting at the adjoining table, from which one woman had constantly kept staring at her. To which I had to tell my dear Mum that the table to which she referred was merely a mirrorreflection of ours, the woman in question none other than herself. As an author, I’ve seldom missed out on the opportunity to place a cliché mirror conveniently in a plot-line to allow me an excuse to provide the description for some character. Seldom, if ever, in my vampire novels, have I missed out on the opportunity to remind that even the handsomest and most sparkly of those bloodsuckers doesn’t warrant a mirror image. In my novel I, DEBAUCHEE, one of my key orgiastic scenes, not just by chance, just happens to take place in Versailles’s Hall of Mirrors. More recently, returned briefly to my successful artistic endeavors to do two commissioned pieces, I was reminded just how important a mirror can be while executing self-portraits. The same can be said, in this modern day and age, whenever any of us, cell phone in hand, is confronted with the prospect of taking a fulllength selfie.
