Haute Men’s Fashion WILLIAM MALTESE
Missing Links
Even men’s fashion, which evolves more staidly than its women’s counterpart, can and does change over time. Otherwise, gentlemen would still be wearing, square-toed shoes, fanny packs, bell-bottom trousers, jumpsuits, bowler hats, codpieces, even bright-shiny shoe buckles.
This brings me to the subject of cufflinks: those toggle- or double-panel fastening men’s fashion accessories that originally sprang into prominence when men’s shirts became high-starched to such a degree, during the cleaning process, that a simple button was no longer sufficient anchorage for keeping together the two stiff sides of any cuff; a fashion statement that became even more popular once the Prince of Wales, Edward VII, commissioned the jeweler Fabergé to craft the royal cufflinks.
Since then, cufflinks have undergone waning and waxing popularity; the hippy revolution of the sixties having seen them on the verge of non-existence, the eighties having provided a resurrection. Today, what with sportier-style less-stiff shirts, one is hard-pressed to catch sight of cufflinks worn by any man. Even the usually once de-rigueur cufflinked tuxedo- and dinner-jacket formal shirts now often resort to mere buttons; even studs have, more often than not, been supplanted by buttons that are often cleverly concealed behind shirt-front ruff-panels.
Personally, I continue to wear cufflinks, not the least because I like the decorative touch they provide whenever a shirt cuff is “shot” the proper ½ inch beyond the cuff of a containing suit coat … or, sports, tuxedo, or dinner jacket. Lately, in fact, like Edward VII, I’ve commissioned, albeit not via Fabergé, but through local artisans, custom-crafted cufflinks — emphasizing my gun-collecting tendencies with cufflinks made out of spent cartridge casings, my fondness for steampunk with cufflinks made out of small mechanical gears, my penchant for gemology with cufflinks of precious and semiprecious stones. And, I’m enjoying the bargain-buying bonanza afforded by my ability to pick up some of the exquisite cufflinks to be found in today’s vintage and antique shops as more and more men surrender one more bit of class to the convenience of mundane buttons.

HEAVENLY SUMMER SALAD WILLIAM MALTESE
Originally, my intention was to include this recipe, for “Ambrosia Salad”, in my EVERYDAY GOURMET: A MEMOIR, since it was that cookbook wherein I included several of my all-time favorite foods, each with a short personal anecdote as to where and how it entered my top-dining lexicon. As happened, though, “Ambrosia Salad” had become such a favorite of my mother’s that my sister persuaded me to include it, instead, in our MOM’S HOME-COOKING cookbook (pg. 236) which we compiled from the contents of Mum’s recipe box shortly after her death. Providing me the opportunity, here and now, to provide, albeit belatedly, the following supplemental tale of original acquisition. It happened, appropriately, in Greece, in the town of Litochoro, on the eastern slope of Mt. Olympus, where I’d come to enjoy a hiking holiday. It was presented to me, as a lark, with much genuinely boisterous bonhomie pomp and circumstance, by friends who thought it only appropriate that I should eat ambrosia, food of the gods, as all twelve of the Olympian pantheon of deities had once done, in this very same once-sacred geological Grecian locale. While the identify of “actual” ambrosia has never definitively been pinned down by scholars, some even arguing that it was a liquid food, like soup, I was, nonetheless, so pleased with the version served up by my friends, that their interpretation became a genuine summer-salad favorite of mine, as well as for my extended family.
AMBROSIA SALAD 1 can Mandarin oranges 1 can pineapple chunks ½ of 3½ oz shredded coconut (approximately 1 cup) 1½ cup miniature marshmallows ½ pint sour cream Drain Mandarin oranges and pineapple; combine in bowl Stir in coconut, marshmallows, and sour cream. Put into serving dish. Refrigerate several hours before serving.

Interview with Julie Lake who plays Angie Rice from Orange is the New Black By Wanda Julian Wanda: How long have you been acting for? Julie: Well, I started acting as a little kid, I saw a play and I really wanted to do it, so basically from age 5 on. Not professionally until after college, but I did children’s theater, and I did high school theater, and college theater and then I moved to New York and did you know a million crazy plays. And yeah, it’s just really been my entire life which is kind of crazy to think about. W: I love that, that shows that you’re super interested about it. J: Yes, I am. W: You can tell, you can tell. Good, I’m glad. W: What do you love about acting? J: I love so much about it. I think part about why I love it is that I’m very shy actually, and so when you’re in a play or in a scene with other people, you connect to them on a really deep level, like a very intimate experience. And I think part of it is like a way to like have really close friends and like deep connections and just meet people and be part of a group and have fun. I also think like I just like playing other people, you know? Like I just like to imagine and get to be a lot of different people and I think that’s really fun, you know? W: I get it. I think I’ve always been fascinated with actors and actresses and the process and all that. I think I’m a bit shy, so it would take me a little bit. I know my brother and I would put on little plays and stuff and I would pretend that my Barbie’s were acting, and also fashion shows. J: Well, you should take an acting class. It’s really, really fun. I highly recommend it. Are there like any where you live? W: Yeah, we have plays that are put on here and all that, yeah. And you can even go to school for it and everything. I should. J: Just do it.
W: Probably get out of my shell more. Okay. Thank you for encouraging me, I feel so good now! J: No honestly, everybody should do it. It’s not like you have to go and be like, “I’m gonna be the greatest actress.” Just go on and have fun, and you’d be surprised by how good you can get over time. It’s not like you can’t be taught. You can learn how to be a really good actress. You just have to put in the time. W: What was it like to audition for Orange is the New Black? J: Well, I actually got in during the first season when it wasn’t a big deal yet, so I just put my audition on tape, because I was in LA and the casting directors were in New York and they just cast me off of the tape. So it was pretty painless, and I was just in it, you know? I thought it was just going to be one episode, and a couple of lines. Then it turned into five seasons. W: And you were like “Five years later.” You were like “Yes!” It’s got to be exciting right, to be on a hit show? J: I was really nervous for the first time I was on set, like so nervous and anxious for the two weeks leading up to it. I like couldn’t sleep and was having heart palpitations. And then when the first season came out I think we starting filming season two around the same time. So I was like, “Okay, people like the show. Cool.” I have a feeling it wasn’t until season 3 when I really felt like, “Oh wow, this is a really big hit show.” Not that I ever felt anything like, “I’m a celebrity, I’m famous, I’m different than I’ve ever been.” I’m still exactly the same, you know? But it is cool to be part of a show that people really love. W: I can’t even tell you how many times I watched the whole thing. Well, season 5 I might have watched twice, but I’ve watched the whole thing multiple times. It’s like I gotta get my fix every now and then. Then I binge watch it in two days and I’m like, “Now I don’t have it to watch for another year.” So I watch bits of it here and there and in February start binge watching it again. J: Why do you think you love the show so much? W: First of all, the storylines are amazing, and the characters are amazing. You feel you are invested and they draw you in with Piper, then you get invested in all these characters and you’re like, “I want to see what happens here and here and what’s gonna happen with them?” It’s so exciting. You just want to see- I bawled and bawled when Poussey got killed. I was just distraught. And you know, with the guard, I guess you don’t know how tiny she is until you see the guard on top of her. J: She’s really tiny, yeah.
W: I was really attached to her and her story, and how she wanted someone to love, and she got someone to love, and she gets killed. I’m like, “Are you serious right now?” So then you’re like, “This can’t be it for her.” And you get so invested in all the characters, and I have my favorites and you are definitely one of them so whenever I see your scenes I know it’s probably going to be really funny. You and Leanne (Emma’s) when you guys are together it’s just so funny, and so most of the time it’s funny and I’m like, “Oh it’s gonna be good!” My favorite is when you guys made a wish and “Raineth from the sky” and you guys found all the drugs. J: Yah the heroin. W: And Leanne is in the cart and you were scooting the cart like you were flying with a bedsheet cape on. It was so hilarious! I was like, “Oh my goodness!” So a lot of my favorite scenes are with you two because I know it’s going to be funny and when she’s teaching you the song. I love that. It’s so good. W: The show is amazing and I really love your character, Angie Rice. What do you love about playing Angie? J: Well, I think it’s just a really fun character. The shit that Angie says is so ridiculous and outrageous, it’s just really fun to be silly and have fun. It’s just a fun character. The show is a drama, but I’m in a comedy. So, it’s always a good time. W: It’s so fun, and some of the things the other characters say are funny too, but you and Leanne seem to get a lot of the really funny stuff. J: Yeah, we do. They really write really good stuff for us. W: You and Emma Miles, who plays Leanne Taylor, look like you have the best time shooting together. What is it like to do scenes with her? J: She’s a really good friend of mine. We’ve become really close over the years, and we’re at a point where we can read each other’s minds a bit. So we do a lot of improve and come up with little funny bits that we think are silly. We’re kind of like sisters at this point. Well, maybe sisters isn’t a good fit because we don’t really fight. We’re just close. W: I love that, so it’s like, “Let’s go be fun!” That’s one thing I love about your characters because you look like you have the best time. J: Yeah, we definitely do.
W: You already answered this: Are you friends off the set too? Yes, you are. I’ll cross that off. J: I’m really shy and Emma’s really outgoing, so when I first joined the cast, she completely took me under her wing. While I’m too shy to say two words, and she’ll just talk and be friendly and she took me around to meet everybody and made me feel really comfortable. I feel like I owe a lot to her. Like, she made friends with me when I was so scared and vulnerable, and we’ve been friends ever since. W: That’s amazing, I’m so glad. I bet a lot of the girls are really close because you shoot so long together. J: Yeah, there are a lot of really great girls on the show. W: Have you guys started shooting for the sixth season yet or is that already done? J: Yeah, it started last week. W: Oh, so it’s already going. Yay, that’s exciting. W: There are some incredible storylines. Which ones have been your favorite so far? J: It’s weird because I think when you’re a part of the show, you know everybody as people, as actors, and you were there. I feel like I, even though I love the show and recognize it as a great show, I feel outside of it when I watch it. If you were in a show that had all of your friends in it, would you be able to let go of disbelief and get into it? I don’t know, there’s something weird about it. So, I don’t know if I can say what my favorite storyline is. I love Poussey and I also was extremely distraught when she was killed off. I loved her. I love Crazy Eyes and I love Pennsatucky. W: Yeah, when you guys were all still buddies it was pretty awesome to watch you guys together. I’m a huge fan of hers too, and her story arc has been fantastic. The transformation she’s made, and the friendship with her and Big Boo, because I love Big Boo too. It seemed like before, we didn’t get a lot of delving into her, so when they finally showed her backstory and that she’s gotta be who she is, and then her protecting Pennsatucky with everything that happened with Donuts, and you know how she’s so protective of her and it’s like she’s her big sister almost. And so, I love that we get to see Big Boo more and where she’s caring about someone. J: I mean, yeah, I love her. W: All the characters are so good. It’s hard to pick. And the whole thing with Diya and her baby. And then the dude ran off. Outside of the show I think he ran off because he had a hit show with How to Get Away with Murder, but in this he just got cold feet I think. What’s his name, the one who scared him? Diya’s stepdad. Eleida’s boyfriend. I forget his name. And you’re like, “Ugh, men.”
W: So I see that you are a writer too. What do you love to write about? J: Well, I do a web series recently released on Facebook about two girls who kind of struggle with anxiety and depression. It’s a comedy. I’m also writing some stuff for television: one is about mermaids that I’m working on right now. Fun girl stuff. W: Any upcoming projects that we should be on the lookout for? J: Not really. Just things that I’m writing and Orange, of course. Nothing too crazy going on with me right now. I’m just doing a lot of my own creative stuff. W: What are you passionate about? J: I guess I would say acting. Like I’m always in acting class and working and rehearsing and writing. I love my husband, I love my puppy. Probably acting is my biggest passion, yeah. W: Where would you like to be in five years? J: I want to sell a show, for sure. I want to be a series regular on a great show, maybe my own. I mean, I don’t know, several things. I want to buy a house at some point. Mainly I feel like my ambitions are career-wise. I want to be working all the time. W: That would be amazing and you know what? I believe in you and it will happen. J: Aw, thank you.

Interview with Stacy Layne Matthews from RuPaul’s Drag Race By Wanda Julian Would you do All Stars 3 if you had the opportunity? I totally would. In all honesty I would really wanna be on Allstars 4 if that were to ever happen. There are so many things that I wanna work on health wise. I’m still struggling with weight issues.... and I don’t feel like putting myself back out there will help me achieve that goal. I would rather get to where I need to be and make a come back. And show them my hard work. At this particular moment I’m not there. But if the opportunity where to present itself I can’t say that it would be easy to turn down. Would you do any other reality TV show? I always wanted to do American Idol.... and the voice. I have actually auditioned for them both but I wasn’t what they were looking for. I believe things happen for a reason. But yes I totally would. Any new projects in the works? I’m actually working on getting some real merchandise for the fans and people who loved watching Rupaul’s Drag Race. I was fortunate to be asked to be on one of the AAA girls songs on their new album. Featuring myself, Alaska Thunderfuck, Willam and Courtney Act. My main focus right now is to travel more. Not having a Manager it’s not always easy but I think I’m doing pretty good. The show has been on 9 seasons! What do you think of that? I knew when I first watched the show even before my season of Drag Race I knew that it was gonna be a HIT. People love Drag. They love reality TV and competition. So when you put those two together you are bound to have something successful. I’m very honored to be a part of that Legacy.
Where do you normally perform at? You can find me on House Cast at Radium Night Club on Friday nights in Fayetteville NC. We have an amazing cast of girl from all over the state of North Carolina who come in and produce amazing shows. For State Title holders and National Title holders. From Continental Plus, North Carolina USofA, North Carolina America. The list goes on and on. What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about learning new things. I’m passionate about seeing others happy. I think that is my main goal in this life is to put a smile on someone’s face. Through Drag, signing, cooking or just being myself. You can find passion in many things. How does someone get you to their city to watch you perform? Fayetteville is a very accessible city. It’s a Military town and its located right off of I95 which reaches from Main all the way to Florida. Friday nights with shows starting at 12:30am. I always love when people drop by and hang out with me and the girls. We will always give them a little bit of that southern hospitality.

So, Tell Me Dahlink by Brenda Burgett So, tell me dahlink, have you found yourself in an emotional space where you question everything in your life? I don’t know who I am anymore. I don’t know what I want, much less what it would take to obtain it. I give counsel to many people, so you would think I would not find myself in a space of despair and depression. A time of not knowing how to feel better or get beyond this time. I will share my experience for your consideration in hopes that it may make your down times easier. In meditation during a hard time I began it with, I just don’t know anymore. Nothing seems to be as it should be. I just don’t know--I heard (yes, I do hear voices) Start with what you do know—forget what you don’t know. Hold on to the good feelings—good thoughts and the goodness you know exists. Well, ok so here is what I do know: I know that I am a kind loving person to those who l am close to - I know that I treat people the way I want to be treated - I know that this a well-ordered Universe and that I am a part of it - I know that I am connected to a force so large that all things are created from it - I know that all things good come from that energetic force - I know that my personal power can change my world, and that can be as fast or as slow as I want - I know that if I desire to be loved I must first give love - I know the right love for me does not required me to give-up myself or change to make another person complete or happy - I know that the answers for my life are inside me, and to access these answers I have to ask, be still and expect. These answers can come from prayer, meditation, teachers, or the side of a beer truck - I know that I am a spiritual being having a human experience - I know that judgement doesn’t serve me but discernment is a gift to be used - I know that true forgiveness begins with myself and not another asking for a wrong be forgiven - I truly know it is all about me - I know it’s not a perfect childhood, perfect parents- perfect mate or a perfect life that makes me complete - I know that when the pain of being unhappy becomes too much, hurtful, or boring I can release it - I also know that to appreciate the diversity in others makes it easier to appreciate myself - I know that to desire more success, security, and peace is not frivolous or selfish - I know that the source that created me instilled an appreciation for the comforts that I desire- (which include a great purse) a great car, traveling first class, fine wine, and - but not limited to great chocolate-I know that to live with the sweet spirits of my beautiful dogs is better for me then a pill - I know that I have a true friend that I can contact when I need her and she always tells me that I am a good person and that whoever disagrees with me for any reason is wrong and should be banished from my world- I know that that same friend will talk me off the bridge and help me find solid ground again- I know that I would do the same for her - I also know that I truly will be the queen of my own small island and you are welcome to visit! Breathe my friends all is well. You have much value, and are very much loved. So there you have it Dahlink.

twitter @XBret64 youtube XBret64 twitch.tv/XBret64
Interview with Twitch Streamer XBret64 by Wanda Julian Wanda: How long have you been streaming for? Bret: I’ve been streaming for over two and a half years. I first started in 2014 and I even remember the exact date I started streaming because my very first stream was the day a certain game came out called Citizens of Earth. It was an indie game that was made in the same spirit as Earthbound which was a cult hit Nintendo classic that at the time Nintendo had not released on any of their Virtual Consoles. Anyways it was a game I paid full price for, so I decided, “You know what? Since this isn’t a free game maybe I should try streaming it. I’d probably get some traffic that way.” And so the game came out on January 22nd 2015, and that’s how I remember the day I first streamed. W: What do you stream? B: I like to think I’m a lot different from other Twitch streamers because most of the popular streamers have a few set tiles that they stream, while I stream every game I want to play, because for me gaming is a lifestyle. Gaming means more than just three or four games. So, this is me in my free time playing games: I just take my viewers along for the ride. W: You are right. I’ve noticed that when I was watching more streams, it’s like they get where they just play one game or maybe two. B: And you see that’s the way if you really want to try to grow and get some serious followers, you stream one game. But when you’re a variety streamer it’s harder to grow
because some people will follow you just because you’re playing one game and then when you’re not playing anymore, they won’t watch you. So, people staying really just relies on me most of the time. W: Well, I think another reason people come back, and it’s a reason I come back to your channel, is because of you. You have a really great personality and you’re fun to be around. So I don’t think you will have any problem growing. B: That, to my understanding, is why I keep getting people to come back. I know I’m a unique person, and I’m easy to be friends with, so forgive me if I’m speaking too much. W: What are your favorite games to stream? B: That’s kind of a hard one to say, because there’s different types of favorites. There’s personal favorites of yours, like I do have a most favorite video game of all time, but I’ve never streamed it yet, and this game will probably never stop being my most favorite video game of all time because it was an important part of my life when I was growing up and therefore it had a stronger impact on me than any game that will ever follow. The game Chrono Trigger is a game I plan on streaming when I hit 1,000 followers and we do our 24-hour stream. Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest RPGs ever made, but it is also one of the shortest. I could probably beat it in 24 hours.
W: I can tell streaming is your passion. What do you love about streaming? B: There’s many reasons why I love streaming. In ways it is an outlet for my creativity, in ways that aren’t that evident on the channel yet, but I don’t have many outlets for my creativity anymore. Sometimes you don’t get around to doing things you always wanted to do and having an outlet for my creativity has been very therapeutic these last few months. I also love the fact that people depend on me for some of thier evening entertainment. That gives me a boost to so much confidence that people set time aside for me. They make it a point to come see my channel, and so it bolsters my resolve to get out there and give them exactly what they came to see. When people are there watching me and having fun, I know I’m doing my job, and so it really helps my confidence in knowing that I’m doing something right. I could come up with more reasons why I love streaming, but those are the ones I can come up with off the top of my head. W: I totally agree. If I have Twitch up, I watch for you because you light up when you stream, you’re so happy and. Like yesterday I was the first one in there because I was purposefully watching for you. W: My favorite you stream is Minecraft. What do you love about Minecraft? B: That’s kind of easy to answer, because Minecraft, in my streaming “career,” is what got my foot in the door. I streamed for four or five months all sorts of games before I first streamed Minecraft. It was only after streaming Minecraft that people actually come back to my stream. So, to me Minecraft has a special place in my streaming heart because if it wasn’t for Minecraft I don’t know how I would’ve got started. W: Are there any new games you are looking forward to? B: The next game I’m looking forward to is Super Mario Odyssey, which comes out in October. I’m a big Nintendo fan and I’ll always love Nintendo no matter how bone-headed they are. I still want Arms really badly, but because of money I have to prioritize. Right now saving up to make sure I can afford Super Mario Odyssey the day it comes out is my number
one priority. I want it more than Destiny 2, even though that was a game I was very excited for at one point, but have since decided to make myself prioritize what I want more. Because Destiny comes out the first week of September, before Super Mario Odyssey, but at this point my most excited game is Super Mario Odyssey and I’m gonna get it day one and I can’t wait to stream it because it’s been awhile since we’ve have a Mario game like this, where you’re not confined to little planetoids or isometric over-the-shoulder views such as in Super Mario 3D World. W: You are having a huge event coming up soon. Tell us about it. B: The channel rebirth, as we’re calling it, is my all-out attempt to make my channel look as professional as possible. It all started back in April when I finally used the money tipped to me from you and all my other viewers that I had saved up to finally buy a new face-cam, which was a Logitech C922. I was like, “Now we’re gonna have a better looking stream.” I was like, “Okay, we’re gonna have a brand new face-cam, so we should have a special stream around it because that’s gonna be pretty cool.” And then I was like, “I can’t use this face-cam yet, because I need better lighting.” I knew that in order for a face-cam’s quality to really show, you need to have good lighting. I don’t have the money to buy lighting, so I’m gonna have to make my own lighting. And that’s exactly what I did. Now I was like, “Well, I don’t want this face-cam on my monitor because it’s wobbly and it’s always shaking when I pound my desk, and I don’t want that so I gotta have a tripod for my camera.” I don’t have a tripod so I make that. I made my light source and my tripod out of PVC piping and my light source was made from an old lampshade lined with aluminum foil on the inside with the light coming through. There’s a clamp desk light that I bought for a dollar at Goodwill and I snipped all the steel around the edge so I could fit it into my lampshade, which lined with aluminum foil, to make what’s known as a soft box. That lights me up great without glaring into my eyes, and that’s been set next to my tv for the last few months ready to use for the big channel rebirth. So then another thing that happened all of a sudden in the last week of April was that Twitch started their affiliate program, which was their attempt at getting up-and-coming streamers to stay streaming on their channel instead of YouTube or some-
thing. So, when they launched their affiliate program and I looked at their minimum requirements, I saw that I fell right within those. Just a week after they started the program I got the invite to be a part of it. And so, I was like, “Woah, this is great! I’m gonna have to do this the same time I do my special new face-cam stream!” And so, it just kept on building and building from there. I was like, “Well, if I’m gonna have a new web-cam, I might as well have new overlays.” It just kept mounting and mounting all the way up until this giant vision of mine for this channel rebirth. It’s from now on the channel is going to look brand new from what it was, because my channel has looked the same way for the last year and a half. We have brand new info panels, brand new graphics, brand new Twitch banner, brand new overlays, especially for my IRL streams because those are pretty popular these days. I’ve been making every single one of these graphics all by myself. Most Twitch channels outsource for their graphics and stuff, and to me, in my opinion, I think a lot of channels look the same. They have the same bar overlay on the top of the screen while I’m not going to use any special type of- I’m gonna use a minimal overlay because really I don’t believe in having any graphics covering up gameplay. All of these are made by myself because I want full control over it, and plus that’s my aforementioned outlet for creativity I’ve been having these last few months. I’ve been working on this and ripping some of my favorite art of the oldest games that I like and using that to spice up my channel and give it the flair to people like, “This is a guy that really likes games!” I know we’re a dime a dozen these days, but gaming is an important part of me and so I want that really shown in all my channel graphics. So I’m working on all these fine little pixel-arts that come from games and editing them and giving them my own personal touch and it’s just so much fun. I think my channel’s gonna be one of the best looking ones on Twitch come the rebirth. So, I’ve been saving back being a Twitch affiliate for this channel rebirth which is September 3rd at 7:30 pm Central Time. W: What time do you normally stream? B: I don’t have fixed days that I schedule. I usually stream at least five days a week, and I usually start no later than 8:30, but sometimes life gets in the way and I have to adjust. The best thing is, is that I have wonderful followers that still come no matter what time
I start. I usually start between 7:30 and 8:30 on most nights of the week. W: Is there anything else you want to mention? B: After the channel rebirth, everyone’s been wanting One Sitting Sunday to come back, and I’m very excited to announce that it will be coming back and I will be announcing what our first game is on the rebirth. One Sitting Sunday is where I sit down and play a game from beginning to end without stopping, barring going to the bathroom or getting a snack. Everybody was always so excited for those so I’m excited to pick those back up again. W:Thank you Bret and I look forward to the rebirth stream!
