Interview with Michelle Uberreste By Wanda Julian

Did you try out for more than one season on Project Runway? Yes! I applied 4 times!! The first time I send the application I never even heard back. 2 times after that I got auditions but got a “maybe” and then a “no”, and the fourth time I got an audition and went all the way through! What was the experience like being on Project Runway: Under The Gunn? It was sort of weird, very real but surreal at the same time. When I was rushing I kept hearing that song they actually play on Project Runway when you are trying to beat the clock! But it’s actually very silent in there, sometimes you can hear a pin drop! What is a typical day like on Project Runway: Under The Gunn when they are filming you? You wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning, get ready, get your microphone and everything, then you do morning reality. They film you while you’re getting ready or right before you are ready to go, talking about your day and everything. Then comes all the camera set ups. We usually travelled to a location to get the challenge; you have to wait a long time for everything to get set up. Then you get the challenge, travel back to FIDM and wait for more cameras to get set up and eat lunch. So about noon or 1 you get to actually start, then we would work until around midnight and do it all again the next day! It was definitely grueling but I loved every minute! What kind of doors has Project Runway: Under The Gunn opened up for you? All kinds of doors that I would never expect! I’ve actually gotten to work on a lot of new and cool projects from people that have found me that saw me on the show. Some I can talk about and others are super secret! Would you do another reality show? I would definitely consider it but I guess it would depend on what it was. What are some goals you would like to achieve? Right now I am working to build my own brand. I’ve gotten the start, but it’s a long road ahead. My main goal would just be to get my brand to a point where I can support myself and my family off of my business alone, and hopefully make a little extra to contribute back to the American economy and hopefully hire some employees! We are losing so many jobs in America right now, and I think its super important to support small businesses right here at home. What can we look forward to in the future from you? Lots of innovative new designs! I am up for anything and always want to do bigger and better each season!

What inspires you to design? It’s a drive that God must have given me because I don’t know where it comes from. All I know is that it’s the most satisfying thing to imagine something and then make it, create it, out of nothing! To see it come to fruition is really a pleasure. What era or eras are your favorites for fashion? That’s a tough one. I love the 20’s/30’s and 50’s/60’s for music and cars which inspires me a lot in my designs, but they don’t reflect those eras fashion wise. I guess the future inspires me the most when we’re talking aesthetics. I want my designs to be something that is coming, not something that has been done. What trends are you excited to see this summer? I don’t care so much for trends. I feel like that’s a thing for followers and that’s not who I want to be. I’m really disappointed in fashion, as it’s basically become an industry of “stealing other people’s ideas”. Everyone wants stuff cheaper and so the industry knocks it off and offers it cheaper. What are your must have pieces for summer? Dresses! It’s so hot and sticky in L.A. and easy, drapy dresses are the best! I need to be comfortable to work but still want to feel good in whatever I’m wearing; I like to design with that in mind also!

Canines on the Catwalk Divino means Divine and what a divine time they have at Divino Fashion Runway Show. Divino started in the spring of 2012 with 65 models and have had up to 100 models. Owner of Fifth Element talent productions, Wendy Jordan, started this show with one huge goal in mind, proving all people are beautiful. “We take anyone” Jordan has said. The models go through an audition process that gives the more experienced girls the opportunity to be Avant Garde but everyone gets in! For those who want to make a modeling career get to experience some things they would encounter in the modeling world. All models are expected to be very professional and handle themselves in the right way. Many models have just blossomed into confident people even if they didn’t want to inevitably be in the modeling business. That is the greatest reward for Wendy and her crew, seeing the models shine in their own way. “As a mother of a pre-teen, I was very hesitant to allow my daughter to get involved in modeling. She has talked about modeling for about 2 years before I decided to look around. I was so thrilled to find The 5th Element and Wendy Jordon. They welcomed my daughter with open arms and made her feel like one of the team. They encouraged her from the beginning to be part of the Divino show. I was unsure of whether that would be too overwhelming for her, but decided to let her try. What an awesome experience for my daughter! Divino was not only fun for her, the event producers provided a very relaxed atmosphere where she was supported by the older models and had younger models with whom she could hang out while waiting. My daughter did an amazing job and walked away from that experienced as a huge success. Divinio challenged her in ways that she has never been challenged, but supported her to rise up and do her best! We have amazing photos from the experience and she can hardly wait for the next show!” –Fay Cadwallader, mother of a model Divino is all about lifting people up and helping others break out of their comfort zones. “Everyone is beautiful!” says Wendy Jordan, “It’s our motto!” This motto is deffinately lived up to when models are trained with the Fifth Element because by show day everyone has opened up to each other and you can see a huge difference in the models that come in. There is a confidence in them that you can just feel as you watch them walk and strut their stuff. Tonya Erdman puts it into words perfectly, “ Personally I have utterly enjoyed being a part of Fifth Element with Wendy Jordan. I have seen some amazing things happen with Divino and I am so proud to have been a part of it. I have seen very shy wallflowers come out to be beautiful blossoming orchids with so much more confidence. It really brings pride when you can bring joy to people that are so beautiful but don’t think they are. By the end of training with everyone at Divino, the models feel like they are part of a family. They feel loved and accepted for who they are. I think modeling has a bad image sometimes but this particular experience is so uplifting. The show will continue to grow and continue making all models of all shapes sizes, male, female and personalities feel included and beautiful.” Tonya Erdman, photographer with the Fifth Element In 2012 the Fifth Element founded a fundraiser show named The Fifth Elements Canines on The Catwalk to benefit Spokanimal. Fifth Element chose Spokanimal as their charity to help out because they lost all of their animal control funding and needed help. The Fifth Element crew is big into Charity work and this was the perfect opportunity for them to help. It has been a challenge getting this show off the ground for various reasons but it has been able to donate money to this much needed charity. “I have been a part of Canines since they day we came up with it. I love every aspect of the show, including what goes into producing it. The dogs that we auditioned are so well behaved and amazing to work with. Wendy is such an amazing person for doing this for Spokanimal in their time of need and I know she would have done it even if they didn’t need it. She is a beautiful inside and out. We have had ups and downs with this show, but in the end we produce and fantastic show every time! I can’t wait until our next Canine’s in Spring 2015, I just knw it’s gong to be a great one just like the years prior!” –Kenna Marbach, Modeling Coach and Executive Assisstant to The fifth Element

From training models to training dogs to promoting these shows Fifth Element still finds time to produce many other shows and has many projects in the works. Divino has gotten so big that Jordan has started bringing the show to Seattle, WA. In the fall of 2013 the Fifth Element crew brought Divino to Seattle to give models over there a chance to join in the fun, and boy did they love it! Since that show, the Seattle models have been recruiting to make Divino Fall 2014 even bigger for themselves. For a lot of them this show was a way for them to break out of their comfort zones. “Joining Divino is one of the best decisions I made in my life. I remember the first day Svea, another Seattle model, asked me and told me modeling will get rid of my insecurites, which it did, and I’m always thankful for that. Divino, to me is a life changing opportunity with positive aspects. Since Divino I been eating healthy, because I want to stay im shape for modeling. But overall Divino has helped me get rid of my personal demons that have been holding me back from potential and ever since I joined Divino I feel like a brand new authentic human being. I can’t wait until this fall when Divino comes back to Seattle!” Geoffrey Lamar Taylor, Seattle model The Fifth Element is opening a bigger location in down town Spokane, WA in the fall that will still be offering classes and so much more. There are also a few events they are putting together that they are excited to reveal to the public here soon. To keep up with whats happening with The Fifth Element and their crew follow them on their website at www.the5ifthelement.com as well as on Facebook under The Fifth Element to stay up to date with their latest events!

Interview with Alaina Hill By Wanda Julian

What is it like to be a fashion designer in High School? Because I wear many hats in and outside of school I find it sometimes hard to balance everything. When shows come around I have to be extremely careful to balance my time to make sure I get my school work and everything else done What inspired you to be a designer at such a young age? When I was 10 I taught myself to sew on a 6 inch tall paper embellishment sewing machine. With all my Christmas money that next winter I bought my first sewing machine. My first project ever was a t-shirt pillow. As time went on and I got a little bit older I picked up on more ideas and more skills. It wasn’t till my 8th grade year when I started sewing and designing clothing. That year my Grandpa lost his battle with cancer. That was when I finally understood why my family always pushed me to my best in life. I now realize life is short and we must take advantage of every opportunity offered to us. What did it feel like to have designs walk down the runway? I am so thankful for all the amazing opportunities I have been given in the last 3 years. If you would have asked me 7 years ago what I thought high school would be like, I would have never thought even in a thousand years that I would be modeling and designing in runway shows. This last march marked the 3rd Divino I have been a part of. This year I had the unique opportunity to model one of my own designs. I’m still speechless when I think about seeing the girls walk in my designs down the runway. It’s so exciting to be able to send them down the runway and follow right behind them. Honestly though, it’s also extremely hard. I put my whole heart into the dresses when I make them and when they do walk, I am vulnerable. After the girls get out onto the catwalk and model them that hesitation leaves and pure pride and joy overwhelms me. What are some goals you would like to achieve? I graduate next year and after that I plan on going to an art college. I want to major in Art Education with a minor in fashion design. One day I hope to open a children’s art center for low income families and teach kids like myself the amazing potential everyone has. What inspires your designs? I love to make a bold statement. There are three main things I do when I design: I ask myself many questions like what am I trying to say with this piece? In the last show I did my own spin off of The Queen of Hearts. In the runway show as my designs progressed in the shows they started with a softer younger feel and then went to an edgier older feel. I love to take an unconventional item and match it with a theme and do a spin off I also love to recreate old and out of date items to make them new and improved My designs are about being true to myself. It’s about being feminine with an edgy but modest twist.

What era or eras are your favorites? I am absolutely in love with the 50’s! The full skirts, the bright colors, and feminine fashion definitely enhance a woman’s beauty, and I think that is what fashion should be about. What trends are you excited to see this summer? Circle skirts High wasted bottoms Bold prints and colors Metallic What are your must have pieces for summer? Sun dresses, lace tops with a bright cami, and a cute pair of flats

Graduated Fashion By Maisie Hayden

Graduate Fashion Week’s Most Notable Designers

As one of the most exciting events in fashion, Graduate Fashion Week showcases the work of numerous talented students who plan on entering the fashion industry. GFW displays the intriguing collections from the graduating students from a range of schools in the UK, giving them exposure to the industry’s leading professionals and a chance to display their work for the public to see.

Aimee Dunn provided a killer line of menswear, showcasing breathtaking black and white ensembles with a touch of social and political issues. Her models marched down the catwalk with Margaret Thatcher on their sweaters, making a bold statement that won her the Menswear Award. Her shocking collection was by far one of the most outstanding featured at the event, and so Aimee is gearing up to conquer the fashion world. She gives her advice to future graduates, telling them to “Work hard and don’t be afraid to do what you want to do.”

Rebecca Damian’s collection confirmed her prominence as a rising star in the fashion world, as her interactive, intriguing clothes put on a memorable show. Her line quite innovatively incorporated 3-D glasses, taking the visual aspect of clothes to a new, unexpected level. Her collection featured tights, dresses, and various patterns and stripes, where her revolutionary use of colors created an unforgettable visual experience.

Christopher Demirjian emerged as a star during GFW with his keen use of stripes and patterns that included the colors of the rainbow. By mixing stripes with various patterns and colors, he made his collection stand out among others. His taste in aesthetics and originality makes him an important emerging designer.

Summer Trends By Maisie Hayden

It is summertime once again, and so it is time to embrace the season’s many trends. The hot summer months to come feature the year’s most scorching styles. Due to the steamy weather, shed those heavy shoes and boots in exchange for trendy sandals. Perfect for the beach or wherever your summer plans take you, strappy sandals with thick soles are all the rage this season, and, if you’re brave, wear them with socks. High-waisted shorts and crop tops are two must-haves this summer, which are best sported with sandals. Royal blue and teal in addition to pinks and greens are the season’s most important colors, all of which can be combined to create unforgettable looks. Also, the occasional neon-colored items are always good, and incorporating aqua and maroon into your daily style is never a bad idea. Florals and lace have emerged as leading trends this summer, along with Aztec patterns and leopard print. Thin, see-through fabrics bring forth these patterns and color combinations to embrace summer style, while the classic black and white look is always encouraged. Summer dresses are as essential as always, especially in combination with a sun hat. These trends coalesce to create memorable summer styles that will sizzle all season long.

Fine Artist of the Month

Kenneth Saylor

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Kenneth Saylor was born in a small Pennsylvania town in 1992, although now he lives and works in Portland, OR. From an early age he was fascinated by varying forms of art. He began his artistic journey with rough sketching graduating later to doing fine line drawings. After meeting his partner in 2012, he had gone against the confines of what he thought drawing constricted him to and moved into painting abstractionism. This had allowed him to begin a new process of artistic expression; therefore allowing his work to evolve into something entirely new. His overall work portrays this illusion of being engulfed in darkness, while there are moments within that display the truth; which is that beauty and hope always exist. There very existence is the paradigm which therefore creates an environment allowing these elements to coincide as one unified piece.

ARTIST STATEMENT My artwork seeks to drive any preconceived notions of reality and social norms. Within the design of scribbling, you can, for a moment imagine that you are lost and free from all confines. By leaving faceless images of people and distorted figures propped in front of whimsical backdrops, you begin to perceive the world in new and more organic ways. The artwork is not about thinking, but it drives to create a new form of being and allowing your mind to see the universe for how it is in your own vision. Once you start to peer into the life of the work, you can see the chaos but yet feel serenity in the lines. You must imagine that the world is not what is is, but for what the world can be, inside of your own vision and from the feelings that drive you on an unconscious level. So to lose yourself in the work, is to find yourself within your own universe. My work is typically created through using simple colors to leave a photographic element to it, yet loosely paint a figure with subtleties of color. Within the drawings that I create, the drawing is done by layering scribbles a top one another to create light and dark values. It is a repetitive process but yet becomes cathartic and therapuetic.

10TH ANNUAL COURTYARD SHOW AT EVERETT STATION LOFTS Saturday August 16th 2014 @ 4pm – 9pm 328 NW Broadway St. Portland, OR 97209 Everett Station Lofts, a live/work space located between the Pearl District and Old Town/Chinatown. Everett Station Lofts was converted into an artist live space in 1989 by a commercial developer, later being sold to Artspace in 1998 with a mission to preserve affordable space for artists to fulfill their creative needs. There are 16 units on the ground level that serve the purpose to be open as galleries and to open there doors on Portland’s First Thursdays. Everett Station Lofts has added a sense of creativity to the community. The Annual Courtyard Show is a way to bring a community of artists together and to invite the public into our homes. This is a show to support the emerging artists of Portland Oregon. There are two open courtyards in the center of the building on the second floor, beautifully decorated with plants and artwork. Painters, sculptors, photographers, musicians, DJ’s, caterers, poets, writers, and designers all come together for this event. There are works of all forms of expression displayed on the walls, music being played to keep the creative energy flowing, and a world class caterer serving food and drinks. The artists will all be there to participate and engage with the public to discuss their inspirations behind their work. This year ESL is trying something entirely different than in past years, by having the Courtyard Show not on First Thursday, but on Saturday the 16th. Since this is so different from previous shows, there will also be two fundraisers occurring on July and August First Thursdays (July 3rd as well as August 7th). These two shows will have 9” x 9” wood panels for sale for $40 apiece. This is a great opportunity to get a sneak peek of what you will be seeing on the day of the Courtyard Show. A lot of the artists living in the building will be participating in these shows and gives chance for the public to own one of a kind originals for only $40. The Courtyard Show will be held on August 16th between 4pm and 9pm. Makeup Trends By Maisie Hayden

With its warm weather and carefree days, summer is the ultimate time to experiment with makeup and test out the latest trends. This year brings forth a number of interesting looks that compliment summer style and fun. As showcased by various cosmetics companies, several common looks have emerged, determining the summer’s most sought-after trends. The most outstanding trend taking the fashion world by storm is striking eye shadows, particularly bright pink and blue. This look has been featured on the catwalks, and within magazines and various beauty campaigns. When it comes to eye makeup, the brighter the better this summer, and so do not be afraid to experiment with a variety of vivid colors. With colorful eye shadow as a base, seductive cat eyes and winged eyeliner are also a go-to trend. This dangerous, intriguing look intensifies your eyes, creating a daring, gorgeous look necessary to conquer those hot summer nights. To compliment these crazy eyes, bright colored lipsticks, specifically red and pink, are must-have beauty products. The crazier the color the better, and if these brilliant colors are not appealing, embrace your inner Lorde with dark purple or red lipsticks. As for nails, focus on applying purple, pink, and teal nail polishes to complete your summer style. Dominating these makeup trends will lead to a flawless, stylish summer full of fashion and fun.

How to Brand Yourself as a Model By The Shaman of Sexxxy Abel Carv In the modeling industry, the model is the product. As a model, the model is their own “brand”, if you will. There are two ways to brand the model as themselves and as their character. Both have very different implications and shape how they will be perceived.

Branding as Oneself When a model displays themselves as the character, they are putting themselves in a very precarious position. The model is under more scrutiny for their personal life and are putting themselves on a pedestal. The advantages to this is a model is more able to experiment and re-invent themselves over a period of time while giving themselves mild celebrity status as themselves. The disadvantages to this type of branding are being put on a pedestal and the likeliness to being judged for things that are non-industry related.

Branding as a Character When a model creates a separate character for them self, they are affording themselves a fair amount of privacy. A character, however; requires more thought. When creating a character, it must be well defined, have a certain look; personality; and name. Once the character is created it is damaging to the brand and brand dilution if any of those three characteristics are change. For example, imagine watching your favorite show, would you be too happy if the lead character was a tall blonde fit preppy student named Jenny one day was renamed Sue or became a dumb partier or became a short chubby brunette, how would you feel? What would you think? Having a separate character then oneself should also be separate. At no point of time should the lines be blurred between a model and their character if the character as separate as it will open the model up to the same judgment as if the model is portraying them self. The advantages of this type of character are enhanced privacy and separation of personal and business. The disadvantage to this type of character is the loss of creative freedom once established.

Brand Competition After a model has his or her character in mind, he or she may fall into the common habit of worrying about competition. In reality, unless they are competing in an actual competition, there is little to no reason for models to worry about competing with each other. When wondering if someone is their competition, a model should ask them self, “can this other model be mistaken for me?”. If the answer is, “no,” the model in question is not competition. When a promoter, publication, photographer, etc have an idea, it usually is very specific and only one person can fit. If the promoter, publication, photographer, etc., mention multiple names for an idea, it is not because the models are in competition, but because they can see the idea going in different directions, targeting different audiences, or want to do a combination of the two. Models need to view themselves or their brand as its own entity and not worry about stepping on anyone’s toes and know that every brand should have differences to set it apart. For example, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Target are all major retailors, but they have some subtle differences and do not worry about directly targeting each other’s clientele nor about stepping on each others’ toes. They are successful with the mentality, so models should take notice and follow.

Branding is very important to models. There is no “one-size-fits-all” formula, but I’ve outlines some basic guidelines. Experiment with what may work for you, but be careful that you do not make changes or create a character that will impact your career negatively. Article by “The Shaman of Sexxxy” Abel J. Today more than ever, people are striving to find themselves and be unique. In an effort to make room for new trends, the refinement that once existed has all but disappeared. At Urbane Apparel, we bring a modern twist to these classic styles so that you can add unique sophistication to any outfit.

As a personal style consultant, I encountered every day men that wanted to keep an effortless style yet still stand out in the crowd. I founded Urbane Apparel because I believe that all gents should exude polish and style no matter what the occasion.
