The Contiki Menu Great holidays involve entertaining your taste buds along the way. Contiki don’t just dish up a feast of adventure and fun - we make sure you sample all the delights local cuisine has to offer. Australia is home to loads of delicious dishes from juicy beef steaks as part of a traditional Aussie BBQ, to arguably, the worlds best seafood including prawns, oysters and local specialities like Moreton Bay bugs and barramundi. There’s also the chance to try Aboriginal bush tucker delicacies like witchetty grubs, kangaroo and crocodile. And with Australia’s fantastic multi-cultural mix there’s something to suit everyone’s taste buds! Please Note: If you have any special dietary requests please make these known at the time of booking. Although we’ll bend over backwards to make sure it happens, standards can sometimes vary from place to place. Unfortunately we can’t be held responsible for local meals that don’t meet your exact requirements. It’s all part of the adventure!

Tunes while you travel We know music is central to most peoples' lives, that's why we've always seen music as an important part of the overall Contiki experience. Our state of the art stereos pump music through our speaker system on board each of our vehicles. In addition, your Contiki crew carries a wealth of music and uses it to enhance your travels and appreciation of Australia. They've got theme music that connects you to a city or sight you're visiting, dance music to inspire you on an evening out or the latest tunes to ensure entertaining scenic drives. If you have your own favourites, we encourage you to bring them along as others may want to hear your Top 10!
Charging on the Go! Flat batteries are no longer an excuse for missing out on a great photo, because we’ve fitted the vast majority of our coaches with charging units. And you’ll never have to worry about going cold turkey just because your ipod or mp3 player died minutes after you hit the highway. Just don’t forget to bring your Australasian plug adaptors. Also, if you want to send brag-mail to your friends and family stuck at home, there are plenty of Internet cafés that will help you rub it in.

What are my choices and the prices?
9
A complete Optional list with pricing will also come with your final documents.
When do I choose and how do I pay? Optionals are arranged and paid for on tour, not beforehand. By leaving the final decisions until then, you'll have the following benefits: • You’ll be able to choose what interests you, at the same time as your new friends. • You'll get great value, as we’ve negotiated the best rates for each Optional. • An experienced Tour Manager who'll offer you personal advice as well as take care of all the arrangements. • Some activities are seasonal whilst others are weather dependent. So deciding on tour, rather than before, makes sense. This will make your holiday hassle free, better value and more enjoyable, ensuring greater fun, bigger laughs and better stories. Payment will be made on tour and can be made by cash, travellers checks (in $AUD) or by credit cards. IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ Some of these activities involve outdoor adventure and can be physically demanding, so there’s always an element of risk. You should make your own decisions about these activities and only participate in activities that you feel comfortable you can handle. It’s also a good idea to check that your insurance includes your participation in adventure activities.

Low cost airlines...
i k i t n o C s Plu
With low cost airlines like Jetstar, Tiger Airways and Virgin Blue opening up new travel routes all the time, international and local Contiki travellers alike can create the perfect holiday, easily combining great value flights with a tour. These airlines now service many Australian cities that Contiki tours start and finish in including Cairns, Sydney, Darwin, Alice Springs. There's also services to Whitsunday Coast and Hamilton Island (both servicing The Whitsundays) as well as Brisbane and Gold Coast (both servicing Surfers Paradise). Why not make a 7 day 'Magical Tropics' package by flying into the Whitsundays, join us for 7 days of island activity & reef adventure, and depart from Cairns? Alternatively you may wish to link a number of short Contiki tours to see more of Australia. For instance fly into Sydney, enjoy a few days with our 'Sydney Scene' then join our 'City to Surf' to enjoy the spectacular coast and Surfers Paradise, departing from Brisbane. The mix of packaging and holidays is completely up to you - now that's what I call flexibility! And it's not just the warm beach climate of the East Coast, the low cost airlines also allow you to easily match a Contiki tour in the Northern Territory to experience Kakadu, Katherine and Darwin.
Additionally these 'Low Fare Airlines' now connect many Australian cities to Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland should you wish to experience Contiki in New Zealand (see page 15). Here we show you examples of how to link low cost airlines with Contiki.
How to do it What’s the best way to book your short air packaged holiday? Booking is easy online direct with the low fare airline (or in conjunction with your travel agent). We don't get involved as we want you to get the best air deals and the best deals are made by committing early….so decide early what you want to do, book your Contiki product so as to ensure availability, then go online at either Jetstar (jetstar.com.au), Virgin Blue (virginblue.com.au) or Tiger Airways (tigerairways.com.au) and book the relevant connecting flights. NB: You will be responsible for the airport transfer to connect with your tour. Lots of hotels offer shuttle bus services, just ask us when booking your Contiki trip.

INTRODUCING COMBINED EAST COAST & NORTHERN TERRITORY Two of Australia’s most significant geographical regions are the 'East Coast' and the 'Northern Territory'. The East Coast is renowned for its sand beaches, relaxing islands, spectacular rainforests, stunning coral reefs, large cities, lively nightlife and abundant adventure activities. The Northern Territory is the heart of Australia's Indigenous Aboriginal culture and is home to outback adventures, incredible nature and an array of unusual sights, activities and local characters that'll provide memories that are unlike anything else you'll ever know. Over the next few pages you'll find the Contrast Reef & Rock, the Aussie Explorer and the Ocean to Outback itineraries that allow you to experience both of these unique areas on your Contiki travels.

Uluru
INTRODUCING THE NORTHERN TERRITORY Darwin - Alice Springs - Kings Canyon - Uluru - Kakadu ‘Out of this world’ is the best way to describe the experience you’ll get from the Northern Territory. From the tropical wetlands of the north to the red soil and sparse greenery of the Red Centre, it’s a place that ignites the imagination and makes everyday life seem a million miles away. In short, it’s the perfect place to escape for a great ‘outback’ adventure. Sure we’ll take you to the unforgettable spots of Kings Canyon and Uluru where sunrise and sunset never fail to amaze, but we’ll give you other experiences just as breathtaking. We’ll take you to less well-known but equally magnificent spots such as Katherine Gorge and other secret groves. Meeting the characters of the outback will be just as memorable. Imagine hot air ballooning over the desert, discovering the wetlands of Kakadu, or sleeping in a swag on a cattle station seeing more stars in the sky than you ever knew possible. In no time you’ll feel the ‘spirit’ of the land deeply cherished by the indigenous Aboriginals and their mesmerising dreamtime stories. Then you can head back to the ‘21st century’ to the hub of Darwin and discover the cultural melting pot this city has become. Let the Northern Territory work it’s magic on you – you’ll never forget it.

Travelling with Contiki is an adventure you won’t forget – new places, amazing people and what’s even better is that we can do our bit to protect the planet along the way so that those who follow will also have plenty to enjoy.
What we are doing about climate change Global tourism can place additional pressures on communities around the world. Overcrowding, damage to the environment and loss of cultural heritage are some of the impacts being seen. There are significant challenges but our core belief is that by fostering sustainable tourism and acting now to prevent further climate change we can truly make a difference. We are working with our hotel and excursion partners to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce resource consumption and waste. We are also ensuring that our own offices reduce their carbon footprints through ongoing recycling and energy reduction programs, and adopting new initiatives which help to protect the environment and support the communities in which we operate. Contiki’s modern coaches are one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel so you can breathe easy that your footprint will be a little lighter too. Contiki’s coaches are among the best in Australia and New Zealand and by continually updating our fleet we ensure that not only do you travel in style but that our engines are fuel efficient & environmentally friendly too. You’ll be happy to know coach travel emits less carbon emissions and other harmful greenhouse gases per passenger than most other forms of transport including cars and trains. Check out the facts….

Conservation Foundation To further show our commitment we are contributing to The Leading Travel Companies of the World Conservation Foundation, a non-profit organisation that will support long term sustainable tourism globally. Our Group of companies are donating US$1 million per year to fund much-needed conservation, community and sustainable tourism projects that will create a better world for future generations to enjoy. To ensure every dollar goes to people and places in need, each project is carefully vetted by the Foundation’s independent board of trustees, with Contiki also donating staff time and additional resources to the Foundation. Visit www.tltc.com to learn more.
What you can do There is a lot you can do to make a difference while travelling. Even simple things like respecting the local culture of the countries you’re visiting and making sure to live a little greener, by recycling your rubbish, saving energy by switching off air-conditioning and lights in the hotel rooms you are staying in, and conserving water, means the special places you visit will remain as you experience them. In the fight against climate change, reducing carbon emissions has to be the top priority, but carbon offsetting is another small thing you can do to make a difference. You’ll find links on our website where you can calculate your carbon emissions and pay a small fee that goes towards sustainable energy projects that reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. So visit www.contiki.com/sustainabletravel for more tips on what you can do. We hope that while you’re painting the town red, you don’t stop thinking green.

How much money do I need?
We recommend you carry Travellers Cheques in small denominations and a credit/debit card. You’ll need to allow enough money to cover lunches, some dinners, souvenirs, shopping, drinks, optional excursions and activities, entrance fees to some attractions and evening entertainment. Please do not depend solely on a credit/debit card for cash. A full list of optional excursions and activities available along with the approximate costs is available at www.contiki.com. These will also be sent to you with your travel documents.
Seasonality and climate
Being such a large landmass, Australia is prone to seasonal climate changes. This will mean that at certain times of the year some of our brochured itineraries may need to be slightly changed. For example: Northern Territory itineraries during the wet season (December to April).
How much luggage can I bring?
Luggage is restricted to a maximum suitcase size of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29" x 20" x 10") and maximum weight of 20kg (44lbs) plus one small hand/day bag that can go on the coach with you. On tours which include Flotilla Sailing, a small bag suitable for the extremely limited luggage space is required. Your regular luggage will be stored during this time. NO EXTERNAL METAL FRAME BACKPACKS PLEASE, their bulky shape makes coach packing difficult. Contiki reserves the right to refuse to accept larger suitcases on tour. Baggage is carried at the owner’s risk and baggage insurance is strongly recommended. Remember, if your tour includes a flight you are also subject to airline baggage restrictions.
Brochure authenticity
We have put a great deal of effort into producing this brochure. The information given and literature produced by Contiki has been compiled with care and is published in good faith. Sometimes, because of circumstances outside our control, we have to alter some excursions due to seasonal closing or repairs to buildings, etc., especially early or late in the season. If this happens, alternative excursions will be arranged.
What should I pack?
Comfortable, casual clothing for day wear and ‘smart/casual’ for dining and those special evenings on the town. Remember that early or later in the season you will need warmer clothing as well as a raincoat/anorak. Please note that casinos do not allow jeans or denim clothes. A pair of comfortable walking shoes is essential. For further details, please refer to your ‘Travellers Guide’ information book.
Travel Insurance
You must take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancellation, medical expenses, personal accident, personal baggage, money and public liability before you travel. You may not be accepted on a Contiki holiday unless you have arranged satisfactory insurance. You also agree to indemnify us against all third-party claims, actions, damages and remedies against us arising from your participation in the holiday.
