David Walliams Interview

International bestselling author and Britain’s Got Talent judge chats to us during the official opening of the new library at Fowey Hall.

Which of your books is the best for reading on holiday?

When you’re on holiday you’re often in a fantastical place, so why not pick up the most fantastical book Megamonster. It's all set on a volcanic island, where the evil Science teacher Doctor Doktur is turning children into monsters; it's a piece of escapism which should be fun when you’ve escaped somewhere yourself.

Who is your favourite overall character from your books and why?

Villains are really important for stories. I love the character of Burt from Ratburger. I learnt from Roald Dahl that it’s a good idea to make your villains as funny as they are scary, so I hopefully achieved that with him.

Which story or scene makes you laugh out loud the most?

The scene that I enjoy reading most to kids is the naked yoga scene from Gangsta Granny. She’s not actually naked, she’s in her underwear, but it always gets a good laugh, as it's a bit naughty and unexpected! Which children's books would you recommend?

Einstein the Penguin, by Iona Rangeley – funny and original with brilliant illustrations. Sticky McStickStick, by Michael Rosen. It's a very moving account of his battle with illness in the form of a picture book. Stunt Boy, by Jason Reynolds – perfect for reluctant readers.
