Financial Aid Regulations & Checklist Board of Governors Fee Waiver Students who meet specific income requirements can have their class fees waived! Apply online at www.contracosta.edu. If you have already filed your 2014-2015 FAFSA you may already have a fee waiver awarded. Please check your WebAdvisor under Financial Aid Status by Term by logging on to www.webadvisor.4cd.net. FAFSA Fill out the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to see if you are eligible to receive free cash aid to go to school! Apply online at www.fafsa.gov. To apply for financial aid for the Summer 2014 semester you must complete the 2013-14 FAFSA. Cal Grant Deadline The state of California offers state aid through the Cal Grant program. To determine your eligibility for this additional state aid you must complete all necessary application paperwork by the Cal Grant deadline. The deadline is March 2 annually for the following academic year, with a second deadline of September 2 annually (for community college students only). For more information, log on to www.calgrants.org. For additional information about financial aid, including important policies, guidelines, and processes, please visit our web site, www.contracosta.edu and click on “Financial Aid.” You can also stop by The Office of Student Financial Assistance located in the Student Services Center, SSC-102 or call us with general questions at (510) 215-3952. Pell Lifetime Eligibility Limit The duration of a student’s eligibility to receive a Federal Pell Grant is 12 full-time semesters (or its equivalent). The calculation of the duration of a student’s eligibility will include all years of the student’s receipt of Federal Pell Grant funding. Once a student has received a Federal Pell Grant for 12 full-time semesters (or its equivalent) the student will no longer be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant for future semesters. There is no appeal process for this limit.
Direct Loan Grace Period Interest Subsidy Effective July 1, 2012, students with Direct Subsidized Loans originated/ disbursed on or after July 1, 2012 and before July 1, 2014 will be responsible for payment of interest accrued during the six month grace period.
if the student was enrolled in a Federal student aid eligible program prior to July 1, 2012. The ATB alternatives include the student passing an independently administered, approved ATB test or successfully completing at least six credit hours of postsecondary education.
Important Rules
Financial Aid Repeat Course Policy The Department of Education has set a limit on the number of times a course can be repeated before it is excluded from a student’s enrollment status for financial aid purposes. Once a student receives passing credit for a course, that course can only be repeated one more time to be included in the enrollment status for a financial aid disbursement. For purposes of this regulation, a “passing grade” is considered a D- or better. Any course for which a student is enrolling for a third time after having received a passing grade will not be included in the enrollment status for financial aid purposes.
High School Graduation Requirements Students who do not have a high school diploma or a recognized equivalent (e.g., GED), or do not meet the home school requirements, will not be eligible to receive Federal student aid. Students may qualify for Federal student aid under one of the Abilityto-Benefit Test (ATB) alternatives
8 • Fa l l 2 01 4 • Co ntra Costa College • w w w.contracosta .edu
Please note: The restriction applies only to instances when the student receives a passing grade for the course; students are allowed to repeat courses without a limit for financial aid consideration for any failed or withdrawn course until a passing grade is received. Once a passing grade is received, the above policy will apply. **The above repeat course policy applies only to determining a student’s enrollment status for the disbursement of financial aid and is separate from the institutional academic policy regarding admittance for enrollment into repeated courses**
