WHERE DO I START?
Steps to Success • Summer 2014 Step 1 –Submit an Application for Admission
Go to www.contracosta.edu to complete your application online. Click on the “Apply Now” button on the lower left side of the page.
Step 2 –Apply for Financial Aid If you need help paying for school you have several options. You may be eligible for a fee waiver or other state and federal money to help you pay for your classes, books and supplies. To apply go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and follow the instructions to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. You can also just submit an application for a fee waiver at https://secure. cccapply.org/BOG_Waiver. You will be notified via your college email (@insight.rcd.edu) if you qualify for the fee waiver.
Step 3 – Complete the Assessment
We encourage all new students to take a math and English or English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment. This will help ensure you are choosing the best classes for you. Register online for an appointment to take the assessment at http:// contracosta.edu/go/?assessment-appointment. If you need a refresher, take a look at the practice questions posted online at www.contracosta.edu, click on student services and choose assessment.
Step 4 – Enroll in COUN-108
Contra Costa College has a comprehensive orientation and educational planning program offered through our COUN-108 course. Explore your career goals and learn about important campus services. You will be given priority registration once you complete the course. Look for available COUNS-108 sections in the Schedule of Classes.
Step 5 – Register for Classes and Pay Your Fees
Log in to your student account (@ InSite Portal) to register for classes using WebAdvisor. You can use the “search and register” or “express registration” features to enroll in your classes. See Page 5.

Financial Aid Regulations
Pell Lifetime Eligibility Limit, Ability to Benefit, Direct Loan Grace Period and Financial Aid Repeat Course Policy Pell Lifetime Eligibility Limit
The duration of a student’s eligibility to receive a Federal Pell Grant is 12 fulltime semesters (or its equivalent). The calculation of the duration of a student’s eligibility will include all years of the student’s receipt of Federal Pell Grant funding. Once a student has received a Federal Pell Grant for 12 full-time semesters (or its equivalent) the student will no longer be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant for future semesters. There is no appeal process for this limit
High School Graduation Requirements Students who do not have a high school diploma or a recognized equivalent (e.g., GED), or do not meet the home school requirements, will not be eligible to receive Federal student aid. Students may qualify for Federal student aid under one of the Ability-to-Benefit Test (ATB) alternatives IF the student was enrolled in a Federal student aid eligible program prior to July 1, 2012. The ATB alternatives include the student passing an independently administered, approved ATB test or successfully completing at least six credit hours of postsecondary education.
8 • Su m m e r 2 01 4
Direct Loan Grace Period Interest Subsidy Effective July 1, 2012, students with Direct Subsidized Loans originated/ disbursed on or after July 1, 2012 and before July 1, 2014 will be responsible for payment of interest accrued during the six month grace period.
Important Rules Financial Aid Repeat Course Policy The Department of Education has set a limit on the number of times a course can be repeated before it is excluded from a student’s enrollment status for financial aid purposes. Once a student receives passing credit for a course, that course can only be repeated one more time to be included in the enrollment status for a financial aid disbursement. For purposes of this regulation, a “passing grade” is considered a D- or better. Any course for which a student is enrolling for a third time after having received a passing grade will not be included in the enrollment status for financial aid purposes. Please note: the restriction applies only to instances when the student receives a passing grade for the course; students are allowed to repeat courses without a limit for financial aid consideration for any failed or withdrawn course until a passing grade is received. Once a passing grade is received, the above policy will apply. **The above repeat course policy applies only to determining a student’s enrollment status for the disbursement of financial aid and is separate from the institutional academic policy regarding admittance for enrollment into repeated courses**
