Najia Azizi EOPS/CARE Coordinator Najia possesses her MS in Counselor Education specializing in Student Services and Career Counseling. She has over six years of EOPS counseling experience beginning at Evergreen Community College as an intern and College of Alameda as an adjunct counselor. Najia began her time at CCC as an adjunct EOPS Counselor and was hired as a full-time EOPS Counselor in fall 2008 and earned tenure in 2012. Najia brings dedication, vision and passion to the EOPS/ CARE program and we are very fortunate to have her in this new capacity. Najia’s interests outside of work include being a hardcore San Francisco 49ers fan, traveling, shopping and exercising (currently taking a belly dance classď Š)

Shawna Belfield Administrative Secretary Physical Education Administrative Secretary – PE Shawna has a myriad of work experience, most recently as a Journey Child Support Specialist and Production Supervisor. Shawna has worked as a secretary for many years.

She is a Comet alumnus graduating in 1998. During her time as a student, Shawna worked as an office clerk in the Admissions Office. Shawna enjoys roller skating in her spare time and watching old movies.

his educational career as a tutor in the Hunter College Writing Center.

He also taught writing classes there as well as coordinated the Reading Resource Center. Other educational experiences include director of Learning Services at Marymount College, coordinator of Operations for the College Discovery Program at LaGuardia Community College.

Jason began his career at CCC in fall of 2001 as the faculty tutoring coordinator and English professor. His hobbies include reading, writing, and bemoaning the fates of the New York Mets and Jets.

Vicki Ferguson a full-time EOPS counselor in Spring 2006. It was very apparent that Vicki was able to assume management duties and was then hired as the EOPS/CARE Manager in fall 2007.

Vicki served as Interim Dean of Student Services and is now the permanent Dean of Student Services effective November of last year.

Vicki’s hobbies include reading romance novels, hanging out with her family (loves riding roller coasters), shopping and singing in her church choir!

with artists like Malaquias Montoya and Wayne Thiebaud, however an opportunity to work in the summer STEP program which assisted first time college students and helped students of color transition to the university changed his career path.

Subsequently, the opportunities working for the UC Davis Counseling Center, the Cross Cultural Center, and the College of Letters and Science cemented his career path in student services.

After graduating UC Davis with a degree in Chicano Studies, he later settled into his first admissions position at Solano College. In 2003, Trinidad was hired at Diablo Valley College in the Admissions Office and in 2009 he was the Lead Admissions position at the San Ramon Center working on district projects such as Ed Plans and Degree Audit.

Trinidad enjoys listening and collecting Mexican Ranchera music and playing his music at family gatherings. He is also an enthusiastic Oakland Raiders fan.

Anthony Hale Men’s Locker Room Attendant Anthony comes to us with a variety of work experiences from Lead Press Operator to Warehouse Manager.

Anthony is a handy man with home repair skills. His hobbies include coaching basketball, camping, football and spending quality time with family.

Vicki Ferguson Dean of Student Services Vicki received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology/Sociology from Alabama State University and her Master’s degree in Community Agency Counseling from Jacksonville State University in Alabama. Vicki came to the Contra Costa Community College District as an Educational Talent Search Advisor at Diablo Valley College and she transferred to Contra Costa College as an adjunct EOPS/ CARE Counselor. Trinidad Ledesma Lead Admissions & Records Assistant Trinidad Ledesma is a new addition to Contra Costa College. Although he is now a Lead Admissions Assistant he originally started at the University of California, Davis as an Art Studio major with aspirations of being a professional artist. Chunni Leung Student Services and Instructional Support Coordinator – Financial Aid Prior to coming to CCC, Chunni worked in the Financial Aid Office at LMC for over 8 years, where she previously served as Financial Aid Specialist. Chunni was first employed

by LMC as a Financial Aid Assistant I and progressed to a Financial Aid Specialist.

Chunni enjoys watching football with her husband, specifically the 49ers.

Chau Wing Man (Angel) Instructional Assistant in Culinary Arts Chau Wing Man, better known to us as Angel, was born and raised in Hong Kong and came to the United States to attend City College of San Francisco.

She then transferred to San Francisco State University where she received her BS degree in Business Marketing.

After Angel graduated, she worked in different jobs primarily sales and marketing for more than five years and banking for three years.

Her interests in baking and western style cooking had been a pursuit of hers since she was in secondary school. In fact, her interest in food brought her here to CCC and she enrolled in two Culinary Arts classes with Chef Nader Sharkes. Angel was invited to volunteer on a Culinary Arts Program fundraising project and soon after, she was recruited to fill the position as the Culinary Arts Instructional Assistant. n

News from Economic Development Bridge to Biotechnology Program at CCC

Economic Development has launched a new program to strengthen STEM by linking introductory biotechnology lab courses with math, English, and professional development. Bridge to Biotechnology (B2B), a cohort based learning community, is designed to provide foundational skills for those wishing to pursue careers in biotechnology, health related fields and other sciences. B2B Biotechnology Assistant is the first step along a career pathway leading to a higher level certificate (Biotechnology Technician), an associate of science degree or transfer.

The B2B Program is modeled after a successful program at City College of San Francisco funded by The National Science Foundation (NSF) to share as a model throughout the country. The CCC Bridge to Biotech program is funded by the TAACCCT Design It! Build It! Ship It! grant through the US Department of Labor. It is the second start up program funded through TAACCT (Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training).

FLOW

The Forklift, Logistics, Operations and Warehousing (FLOW) program will start its fourth cohort on March 24, 2014. Students learn principles of warehouse operation, computer literacy, professional development and receive certifications in OSHA 10 safety training, Hazmat Awareness, and forklift operations. The nine-week training program prepares students to obtain employment in a variety of transportation and logistics companies.

Graduates are now working at FedEx, UC Berkeley, Target, Safeway, Dreisbach, Nestle Waters, City of Richmond, California Department of Corrections, C & H Sugar, and St. Vincent DePaul.

The center of Contra Costa College has been transformed into a large crater to be filled with learning opportunities for students. The historical Student Association building has been demolished. The demolition also included the Amphitheatre which housed the likes of protests, live music, spoken word, football rallies, and staff cook-outs. The Humanities Building,

joined by Subway Sandwich and a cafeteria area adorned under a big tent to allow students to dine and socialize.

The Student Life Center has moved to the Administrative & Applied Arts building (AA 109).

New pathways on campus are established to accommodate travel and parking. New signage and lighting needs are being addressed to assist students and add to the many safety precautions for evening students.

California Community Colleges Board of Governors Announces Changes to Fee Waivers

Sustainability Issues The blue containers in your area are for recycle items only; paper bottles, cans and plastic drink containers. The responsibility of emptying the Recycle Containers is everyone’s.

1. Batteries should be disposed of through the Inventory & Receiving area. Batteries may be dropped at any time between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

2. All Ink cartridges should be returned to the manufacturer.

3. Lights should be turned off in the classroom when you leave.

4. The Sustainability Committee meets monthly and welcomes faculty and staff to join us to keep the college “green.” The next committee meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 6 in the Buildings and Grounds conference room at 7:00 a.m. n

Contra Costa College students receiving fee waivers will have to meet minimum academic and progress standards to remain eligible for the Governor’s Fee Waiver. This new policy will take place fall 2016. The new regulation will work in concert with the statewide enrollment priorities that will go into effect fall 2015.

Community colleges are putting in place more counseling and other support services to help students define their educational and career goals and stay on track to graduate.

Under the new regulations, students will lose eligibility for the Governors Fee Waiver if they are on probation for not maintaining a 2.0 GPA, for two consecutive primary terms or not successfully completing half the units attempted in that period.

The college must notify students of their probation status within 30 days of the end of the term for which they did not meet the standards. For additional information contact the Dean of Students at (510) 215-3921. n

CCC Automotive Technology Program is GREEN Certified

T

he long journey to the Emerald City is over. The Automotive Technology program received its Green Certification in the fall and is very proud to be considered a “Green Business Program.”

The entire department worked towards this certification along with the CCC Sustainability Committee which is supported by the buildings and grounds staff.

The Green Business Certification verifies that the Automotive Technology Program meets higher standards of environmental performance regulations and take actions to prevent pollution and conserve natural resources. n Spring 7 2014

Counseling & Instruction Faculty Come Together in THE HUB

ounselors and professors have volunteered to decentralize their office hours to serve time in what is becoming more popular on campus; The HUB.

The HUB is an intimate learning environment providing a one stop shop approach to assisting students with their academic and career development needs.

Students have the opportunity to pop-in and receive

help with a course assignment, meet with an instructor, or discuss majors and find out about various career paths. The HUB also provides educational planning for the students, and for the college. It brings faculty, counselors and students together in one place for the same purpose; student success.

C hancellor Benjamin Study A broad Scholarship Awarded…

C

ongratulations to Melodie Williams on winning the Chancellor Benjamin Study Abroad Scholarship (CBSAS) to Florence, Italy. The scholarship is awarded to a CCC student who would not normally be able to participate in a study abroad program due to economic hardship and who typically may be from groups underrepresented in U.S. study aboard programs (as defined by the Gilman Scholarship Study Abroad program for community college students).

“I’m so excited and thankful for this opportunity. I have never been out of the country before, I’m so happy,” says Melodie.

Melodie Williams will travel with a Northern California Study Abroad Consortium which was founded in 1964, and since then, over 1.5 million students have participated in these cultural exchanged programs.

The Florence, Italy trip is the most popular at CCC. The cultural and historical impact of Florence is filled with world-renowned art, architecture, and friendly people to interact with. Students enjoy this academic and social experience that changes their lives forever.

Melodie Williams is a full-time student at Contra Costa College taking liberal arts courses and looking forward to transferring to a 4-year university next year. n Spring 8 2014
