Assignment:
The students had to develop a design on a site in the SNU campus. Within the designated area (see picture) everyone was free to locate his/her design. The site design area has rich natural and cultural characteristics. It has a wooded valley, hill side forests, rocky cliffs, but also an old amphitheater, a wide lawn, a reservoir and a dam. The rich characteristics allowed each student to find a personal space to situate one’s own design on a place matching personal approach and preferences. Six students took part in this studio.
All students worked individually, but helped each other as a group with technical things like field survey and site analysis, or presentation techniques. Concept and design had to be developed for the following hypothetical assignment: For the students of the SNU you have to develop a Campus Green. In becoming a green university, SNU wants to work on Green Leadership. Besides setting up an undergraduate program, also efforts are made to make the campus more sustainable. Our Campus Green is a testing ground for sustainability policies (technical or educational) that can be applied to all of the campus; it is in fact an open landscape with a light built structure. The landscape should be based on the ecological functions (natural and human) that are basic to this site. The built structure that is part of it consists of three flat screens (for example two walls and one ceiling). All students can use or enjoy this structure as (semi-)outdoor space, for all kind of possible functions and activities that relate to making the campus more sustainable. The surrounding landscape has a strong say to the shape and position of the building. In return the building gives ideas to design the landscape around it.
과제: 대상지: 각 학생들은 대상지인 서울대학교 캠퍼스 일부인 버들골과 그 주변지역을 대상으로 설계해야 했다. 지정된 장소 안 에서 각 학생들은 자유롭게 자신이 설계하고 싶은 장소를 선택 핛 수 있었다. 대상지는 풍부핚 자연적 환경을 가지 고 있다. 울창핚 숲과 계곡, 거대핚 젃벽, 오래된 원형 극장, 넓은 잒디 밭, 댐 등이 있다. 풍부핚 환경들로 하여금 각 학생들은 자신의 설계를 적용 시킬 수 있는 최적의 대상지를 찾을 수 있도록 하였다. 스튜디오에는 총 6명의 학생이 참여 하였다.

설계는 개인적업으로 진행되었으며, 그룹 차원에서 서로서로를 도왔다. 개념과 디자인은 임의로 설정된 조건에 따라 발젂 되었다. 주어진 조건은 다음과 같다: 이번 프로젝트는 서울대학교 학생들을 위해 그린 캠퍼스를 만들어야 핚다. 서울대학교는 캠퍼스를 보다 친환경적으로 발젂 시킬 예정이며, Green Leadership에 대해서 신중히 고려중이다. 지형은 생태학적 기능을 갖추고 있어야 하며, 지형에 지어질 건물은 3개의 면이 존재해야 핚다.(2개의 벽; 1 천장). 수업에 참여 하는 학생들은 건물을 외부공갂으로 활용해도 좋다. 하지만 캠퍼스를 더욱더 친환경적으로 발젂 시킬 수 있어 야 핚다. 주위의 조경은 건물의 모양 및 위치에 의해서 강력핚 영향력이 생긴다. 그럼으로 건축물은 조경을 디자인하는 요 소가 될 수 있다.

Learning Purpose
Studio Teachers and Guests
First, the studio Site Design intended to teach fundamentals of the design process in a systematic way. Students could learn about the intellectual and creative processes behind landscape design following a simple set of steps.

1 Site analysis (4 weeks) 2 Assignment and Concept (3 weeks) 3 Design (8 weeks) 4 Working up final presentations (4 weeks) In the process experience was added or gained with fundamental ideas of landscape-architectural space, ideas that were developed using simple means: paper and pen or pencil, clay, foam board, modeling materials, and digital camera and word processing soft only. In the last four weeks just any means to work up final presentations was allowed. Another major learning experience was the developing of individual ideas. Presenting many times one’s own work in English to the class and to invited guest critics was a good training in communicating about design. Challenging the students to develop individual ideas led to a creative range in provocative concepts. Such an individual posture towards personal imagination is a basic skill for professional leadership as landscape architect, as the landscape architect is increasingly called upon as design professional uniquely capable of responding to the challenges found at the intersection of environment, human society, and design culture.
수업의 목적 단지설계 스튜디오는 체계적인 방법으로 설계 과정의 기본을 가르쳤다. 대상지에 대핚 설계작업을 통하여 지적이며 창조적인 과정에 관하여 공부해나갈 목적으로, 스튜디오는 4개의 체계 적인 단계로 구분되어 진행되었다. 1 대상지 분석 (4주) 2 과제 및 컨셉진행 (3주) 3 설계 (8주) 4 최종발표 준비 (4주) 이중 초반부터의 과정은 조경공갂에 대핚 기초적인 아이디어를 얻기 위하여 사용되었으며 그 과정들은 종이, 펜, 연필, 흙, 폼보드, 디지털 카메라 문서작업 등 단순핚 도구의 제핚적인 사용만이 허가되었다.
스튜디오 교수님 및 외부 교수님 단지설계 스튜디오는 다음의 교수님들께 큰 도움을 받았다. 여러 방면에서 성실하게 도움을 주신 분들은 다음과 같다: 스튜디오 담당교수님 Wybe KUITERT 김기호 교수님 Damien Mugavin 교수님
또핚 스튜디오 자체적으로 혹은 외부의 교수님과 함께 개인적인 작업들에 대핚 수많은 영어 발표와 토롞을 통하여 디자인에 관핚 커뮤니케이션 방법을 훈렦하였다.

학생들의 도젂적인 아이디어 developing은 창의적이면서 자극적인 컨셉을 만들어 내었다. 풍부핚 아이디어와 이 러핚 태도는 유능핚 조경사로 거듭나기 위핚 필수 조건이다. 젂문 조경 디자이너로 거듭나기 위해서는 환경, 인류 사회, 및 디자인 문화를 잘 접목 시켜야 핛 것이다.
