Consumer interest in eco-friendly and sustainable products remains as strong as ever, which has led to a steady increase in sales of the company’s flagship packaging solution, launched 20 years ago. The new casting machine will increase the site’s production capacity by approximately 25%, reducing Futamura’s lead times and increasing the quantities of film it can offer to the market.
“NatureFlex films are ideal for applications where recycling is problematic, small wrappers, laminated structures, fruit and vegetable labels, to name a few and are often adopted when they fit in and complement the brand ethos”, commented Andy Sweetman, director of sales and marketing at Futamura.
Since its launch in 2002, Futamura’s NatureFlex™ film range has been adopted by many brand owners. The materials are designed to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly packaging. Not only they are derived from renewable cellulose but they also meet all global standards for industrial composting, including BS EN13432, and are certified as home compostable materials.
The use of a renewable and compostable film offers brand owners an unprecedented opportunity to speak proudly of their packaging. The challenge, therefore, is to ensure that consumers are aware of the special nature of the packaging used. The current composting infrastructure in countries like the UK should be able to handle the compostable packaging on the market. Policy makers and stakeholders need to ensure that an appropriate collection and labeling system is in place, so that products reach the end of their intended life cycle: an industrial composting site or a home/community composter.
Mandatory food waste collection will soon come into force in many countries, providing the perfect vehicle for the collection of compostable packaging. This will increase recycling rates and ensure that less waste is sent to landfill.
