The COMMANDER by Conway Stewart

In early November, just four months after first contacting Conway Stewart, I received an email advising that the prototype was ready. Arrival was awaited with eager anticipation until on the following Saturday the pen arrived. I was not disappointed. It is exactly as I had imagined; the insignia rings on the cap are perfect in 23ct gold-plated Sterling Silver and the 18ct gold nib is a delight to write with. The pen comes in a beautiful presentation box which also bears the Royal Navy Commander rank insignia. Thank you Conway Stewart for turning my idea into a reality. The COMMANDER Fountain Pen now has pride of place in my collection, and is in constant use.

Available as a rollerball or a fountain pen in a luxurious presentation case packaged in a stunning presentation box. A pen worthy of the distinguished Commander insignia.

The inspiration to produce The COMMANDER Pen

We will let him explain the rest ... The following is from the pen of Glyn L Evans My first quality pen was a Conway Stewart given to me as a 21st birthday present by my elder sister. This I suppose was the beginning of a fountain pen collection that has become a passion, maybe an obsession! In January 2017, I had an idea for the design of a fountain pen to reflect the rich maritime heritage of our island nation. I wrote enthusiastically to several well-known pen companies but with no success other than an

The situation changed in July 2020 when my copy of The Oldie magazine arrived containing an advertisement for Bespoke British Pens/Conway Stewart as shown below; The advert said “ACTION THIS DAY”, so I contacted them without delay and by return of post I received their brochure together with a letter suggesting that, if I would like to learn more of their bespoke service, I should contact their Managing Director. I was delighted to find my idea was not dismissed out of hand and so I followed up the call with an email explaining the concept in more detail. I wrote:- “My idea for a pen design is based on the sleeve rank of a Commander

Royal Navy. In simple layman terms it will require the addition of a circle to the top ring of the pen cap although I appreciate that technically this may not be as easy as I describe it. Commander RN is equivalent in rank to Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army or Wing Commander in the RAF. I wish to commemorate the achievements of those Royal Navy Commanders who served at sea during WWII protecting vital convoys in the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Arctic. During WWII Britain depended on vital supplies of food, equipment and raw materials from overseas, notably from North America and the Empire. These goods were transported in thousands of merchant ships, vulnerable to attack by German U-boats. They were grouped in convoys with naval escorts, making them, in theory, hard to find and difficult to attack. Winston Churchill said “... the only thing that really frightened me during the

war was the U-boat peril.” This photo of Churchill (below, left) was taken on board RMS Queen Mary during one of several wartime voyages he made across the North Atlantic to visit the President of the United States of America, Franklin D Roosevelt. The Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continual military campaign of WWII, ran from 3rd September 1939 to 8th March 1945, a total of 5 years, 8 months and 5 days.”

In July, 2020 we were contacted by Glyn L Evans, a member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners and an author of several maritime books, asking if we could make a bespoke pen based on the Conway Stewart Series 100 Classic Black with a special design of the cap rings to represent the sleeve insignia of a Royal Navy Commander.

acknowledgement of my letter, and so my design concept was reluctantly mothballed.
