Cooee Art Gallery in Paddington will be showing photography for the first time as part of the Head On Photo Festival. Cooee Art Gallery is one of Australia's oldest Aboriginal fine art galleries. They are proud to be showcasing the work of Michael Jalaru Torres - a rising star in the photographic world and a third time exhibitor at Head On. Native is a Featured Exhibition at this year's Festival.
Michael Jalaru Torres was born and raised in Broome, Western Australia. He goes by the bush name Jalaru for his creative work. His mob are the Djugun and Yawuru from the Broome region, the Djabirr Djabirr from Northern Broom and the Gooniyandi from the Fitzroy Valley.
Torres is a self-taught photographer and his work draws on his own personal history and personal stories. Through his work he explores contemporary social and political issues facing Indigenous people.
