We provide educational programs that integrate academics, social skills and daily living skills. For Cooke students, academic lessons extend well beyond the classroom. Students use their math skills in the grocery store, develop tools for daily living on the bus or subway, and strengthen their social skills while planning an extracurricular event. Cooke teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists and counselors work together as a team to put together a plan for each student that builds on his or her strengths as a springboard for learning and increased independence. We work with our school partners to develop meaningful inclusion opportunities that will benefit Cooke students as

“Integrating all of the skills our students are developing —academic, social and daily living— is our ultimate goal,” says Virginia Trainor, a speech and language therapist who helped to develop the curriculum at the Cooke Center Academy. “We choose specific themes, and then apply those themes to classes and activities throughout the trimester.” For a theme on restaurants, for example, students created a mock restaurant and went grocery shopping for food. “They wrote up a menu in English class and studied nutrition in Science while learning to make healthy choices,” says Ms. Trainor. “Math lessons included money management and figuring out the cost of items. Students studying other countries in Social Studies visited restaurants that served cuisines from these countries.”

“Our goal is to help students recognize that everything they are learning in the classroom will have a meaningful application in life.” Francis Tabone Assistant Head Cooke Center Academy

We provide students with appropriate inclusive opportunities in the service of all three skill areas. Cooke aims to have students learn in the least restrictive, most inclusive setting possible, so that they are comfortable working alongside their peers. Cooke’s preschool, lower and middle school classrooms are co-located in general education schools, where our students find many opportunities

Liam Jeffries has been with Cooke since he was a preschooler, when a Cooke special education teacher worked with him in a general education classroom. Having Liam in a typical preschool classroom was important to his family. “I thought his capabilities were vast, and we wanted him to be able to model typically developing behavior,” said his mother, Leslie Jeffries.

ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE SPRING GALA

MOODY’S FOUNDATION TRANSITION OFFICE

Benefit Raises More Than $800,000

Inauguration ceremony held on June 1, 2009

There certainly is no place like Cooke! This year’s Wizard of Oz-themed Spring Gala brought Cooke $800,000 closer to its $10 million Road to Independence fundraising goal. With all proceeds supporting the Campaign, the Spring Gala—held at Cipriani 42nd Street on April 27th—pushed the campaign total to over $9 million! Lon Jacobs, Senior Executive Vice President and Group General Counsel of News Corporation, received the Founders’ Award for his tireless efforts in heading the Road to Independence Campaign, and his leadership in all of Cooke’s endeavors. Receiving the Road to Independence Award was NASDAQ OMX, which has been tremendously supportive of Cooke’s technology efforts and its programming for older teens.“The innovation and creativity that defines Cooke is seen every day in many ways, both big and small,” said Bruce Aust, Executive Vice President for NASDAQ’s Corporate Client Group. Fox 5’s Ernie Anastos and Dari Alexander hosted the event, which included a video sneak-peek of Cooke’s very first high school production: The Wizard of Oz. Cooke is grateful to all of its generous supporters for this extraordinarily successful event.

At a June 1 ceremony at the Cooke Center Academy, Cooke officially inaugurated the Moody’s Foundation Transition Office. We did this to recognize the Foundation’s generous, long-time support for the Transition to Life program. The Moody’s Foundation has made it possible for Cooke to hire the social workers and other staff needed to develop this unique program, and the curriculum that supports it. CCA students were on hand at the naming ceremony to share their stories about the corporate internships and volunteer placements that have been made as a result of the Transition program. In addition to hosting staff from both the Foundation and Moody’s Corporation, Cooke was delighted to welcome Lisa Westlake (pictured to the right), our newest board member and Moody’s Chief Human Resources Officer, to take part in the ceremony.

NEW FRIENDS OF COOKE PARTY A SUCCESS Summer Soirée raises $35,000 The New Friends of Cooke Summer Soirée drew 400 guests to the Tribeca Rooftop in June, where revelers enjoyed delicious food and cocktails while catching up with friends. The inaugural event raised $35,000 for the Road to Independence Campaign. “Our friends had a great time, and they were really interested in learning more about Cooke,” said Charles Miller, son of Cooke board member Roger Miller and brother of Nicky Miller, one of Cooke’s first students who passed away two years ago. Charles and his brother Ian founded New Friends of Cooke just after Nicky’s passing, when the group ran a 5K race to benefit Cooke in Nicky’s memory. Hoping to build on the momentum from the race, Cooke launched the Summer Soirée to bring together young supporters for an annual event. Corporate sponsors included Hogan & Hartson LLP, Moody’s Corporation , Greenberg Traurig LLP, Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP, Bryan Cave LLP, Gilt Groupe and News Corporation.
