Welcome to the Winter and Holiday edition of Albemarle Magazine. While every quarterly issue is seasonal – Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter – the Winter issue is understandably focused around holiday themes. This issue will be out right before Thanksgiving and we hope it will be a fun and helpful companion as you celebrate Christmas and prepare to start another year. But we're not going to talk about 2019 right now because there is is much holiday festivity that awaits us in 2018. We always have a great time putting together our annual holiday edition, and this year was no exception. Anna Goodwin McCarthy talked to Talia Krites of Flour Girls in Elizabeth City about the sweet treats the bakery offers at Christmas. You can get some delightful edible gifts there and might want to save a treat or two for yourself. If you were one of the many who missed downtown Edenton's Taylor Theater while it was closed, you'll be glad to know it's back up and running and will be glad to serve as your holiday movie headquarters. Nicole Bowman-Layton takes a look at the re-emergence of the Taylor Theater. The Edenton community has twice come together to keep this gem part of the mix in the charming small town. Of course, Edenton has lots of reasons to visit anytime, and especially during the month of December.
Nicole and Rebecca Bunch teamed up to highlight the role that the James Iredell House Visitor Center plays in Edenton's annual Candlelight Tour weekend. The Iredell House hosts the “groaning board,” which is a festive assortment of food that complements the tour and the other activities in town that are part of Edenton's big weekend. The traditional lore is that the “groaning board” term refers to the idea that the table is so loaded down with food that the board actually groans. Whether or not you hear any groaning sounds while you're there, though, you'll find a lot of tasty food at the James Iredell House during that event. The town goes all out for Christmas and there are bright decorations all around – in the homes on the tour, in the historic Cupola House, at the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse, at the waterfront, and at the Penelope Barker House Welcome Center. The Barker House also has locally made and local-themed gifts at its gift shop, and we offer a look at a few of the items available there. You'll want to browse and see for yourself what else they have. If jewelry is on your gift list, or if you're just looking for a little extra holiday sparkle, Eclectic Jewelry has an assortment of styles and prices and also can do custom work. he annual Groaning Board has been offered traditionally at the historic James Iredell House since 1981, in conjunction with the Edenton Historic Commission’s Christmas Candlelight Tour. Originally, a collaboration with the James Iredell Historic Association (Murielle Harmon), and Historic Edenton State Historic Site, the program has evolved to include partnership coordination of the Edenton Tea Party Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Friends of State Historic Sites, and volunteers. Named for the abundance and variety of cookies, so heavy upon the dining room table that the table “groans from the weight,” the James Iredell Groaning Board is a popular attraction for those looking to get into the holiday spirit, according to Natalie Harrison, program coordinator, Historic Edenton State Historic Site.

Volunteer Dolores Poole has faithfully organized the Groaning Board cookies and volunteers from the Edenton Tea Party DAR. Beth Taylor, Sandy Sperry, Susan Nolton, Kay Currin, Martha McCormick, Shirley Ashworth, Leatha Fischer, Candy Roth, Ginny Puritz and Martha Smith will help to serve cookies, eggnog and cider. Volunteers from around the area offer to bring dozens of cookies to pull this off: sugar, chocolate chip, gingerbread, pecan, peanut butter, macadamia nut, and of course fruit cake. Other than hundreds of cookies, eggnog and hot apple cider are served to visitors as well as they listen to the harpsichord played throughout the event with holiday music by volunteer Mardell Barrett. Don Jordan helps tune the harpsichord every year, Harrison said. Volunteers also help set up the Iredell House decor. Bob Hopkins, site manager of the Historic Edenton State Historic Site, noted that the

house usually takes on a decorative theme every year. “The historic house, is seasonally decorated with different types of fir, cedar, magnolia, moss, ornamental berries, and more,” he said Besides the Iredell House, volunteers Keith Furlough, Sharon Keeter, Carolyn Owens, Debbie Feger, Lori Avery, and Pam Wagner (treasurer of the Friends of State Historic Sites, Edenton) will help decorate the Historic Edenton Visitor’s Center, the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse and the 1886 Roanoke River Lighthouse. Hopkins said he, along with Assistant Site Manager Erica Smith and staff members Natalie Harrison, Andrew Cole, Charles Boyette, Kayla Collins and Andree Piles all pitch in to help. The James Iredell Association provide the wreaths decorating the Iredell House. The Garden Club of Edenton traditionally provides the wreaths on the Lighthouse and the Courthouse.

“It’s truly an example of the community coming together to support their North Carolina State Historic Sites,” Hopkins said. New to this year’s event will be the opening of several of the other facilities on the Iredell property. According to Harrison, costumed historic interpreters will use the 1827 Bandon Kitchen to demonstrate holiday cooking. While recent repair, restoration, and painting work had been completed, the Bandon Schoolhouse will also be open during the tour. The 1756 Dependency, original to the property, has received much attention over the past year with restoration and preparation for the anticipated African-American history exhibit “The Hands That Built a Town: African Americans in Antebellum Edenton,” expected to be completed in the spring of 2019. Work has also been completed on the Bandon Smokehouse, Bandon Dairy, and Iredell Necessary, while volunteers have planned and bedded Annie’s interpretive garden, and interpretive herb and vegetable gardens. The Christmas Groaning Board at the Iredell House will be held from 1-5 p.m. Dec. 14-15. The free event is open to the public.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT BRINGS DOWNTOWN THEATER BACK TO LIFE Story & photos by Nicole Bowman-Layton
W
ith a unique beauty and small-town charm, the town of Edenton at the western edge of the Albemarle Sound invites comparisons to gemstones, often being called “the Pearl of the Albemarle.” So it's no surprise, perhaps, that the word “diamond” came to mind when the executive director of the Edenton-Chowan Chamber of Commerce was asked about the recent reopening of the downtown movie theater. “The support the community has given let the theater re-emerge as the diamond it is today,” said Win Dale, describing how the Edenton community rallied around

the Taylor Theater, which recently re-opened after sustaining serious damage in a 2017 storm. When you look at the Taylor Theater, you are immediately struck by the clean, white stone and glass surrounded by brick, old-looking buildings. Since Edenton was once a Colonial-era powerhouse, you’d expect some historical charm at play at the Chowan County seat. When you look up, you see the big sign, “Taylor,” in lights. One after another, the letters blink on and off in sequence until they all start flashing at once. It’s retro, hip. The Showplace of the Albemarle is alive and well after being closed for almost a year.

In June 2017 a storm damaged an already worn roof, making the Taylor Theater, then under the management of Belinda and Ryan Repass, close its doors. But pressure, after all, is part of what makes a diamond. When the property owner wouldn't repair the damage, the community rallied to save Edenton’s iconic – and only – movie theater. The town council discussed the theater's fate in November 2017 and in the aftermath of that discussion community members gathered enough money to buy the building and restore it. Destination Downtown Edenton helped find grant money for repairing the theater’s facade.
This was known as the

The blinking lights are the handiwork of Ryan Repass. He and his wife Belinda became the owner-operators of the Taylor Theater and were instrumental in the restoration process. While the late Paul Waff personally supervised the restoration of the building from the roof down to the carpet, Belinda and Ryan Repass lined up vendors and called film-making companies to get the latest films to show their customers. It opened a little over a year later — July 6 — showing two family-friendly super hero movies -- “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “Incredibles 2.” On a recent October evening, the movie theater opened its doors for its grand re-opening and ribbon-cutting. The walls are fresh, white — free of smudges from little hands. Huge
framed photos of Edenton and movie posters hang from the walls. The white marble countertop separates you from Ryan Repass, who serves up the theater’s signature cone-o-corn — $1 paper cones filled with popcorn — like a pro. He and his wife managed the theater for a while. Now, the business is officially theirs. “The year we closed, I missed so many of the customers who came through our doors,” Belinda said during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We’re so glad to see them again.” Belinda and Ryan Repass emphasized that they are going to do everything they can to keep this Edenton icon open. “We are trying to present the best movies we can in the best way we
know. This was known as the Showplace of the Albemarle,” Belinda Repass said. “Hopefully, we’ll have something everyone wants to see.” “We’re here for the long haul,” Ryan Repass said. “We will do everything we can so this theater stays open for a good long time.” Edenton Mayor Roland Vaughn recalled, how while the theater was closed, people from out of town would come to him and lament the theater’s closure. “They would plan their own evening around coming to the Taylor Theater,” he said. “We know and always knew that the theater was part of the economic success of our downtown. I look forward to a lot of good things ahead.”

This book on screwpile lighthouses is written by Larry Saint, Karla Smith, John H. Sheally II and Phyllis Speidell. Included in the book is information about the 1867 Roanoke River Lighthouse, which stands over the water at the Edenton waterfront and is the only surviving screwpile lighthouse over water. The lighthouses

once stood at the mouths of rivers all along the Albemarle Sound and Chesapeake Bay. Edenton resident Madison Phillips is pictured on the front inside flap of the dust jacket. Phillips is the honorary lightkeeper of the 1867 Roanoke River Lighthouse and was instrumental in its restoration.

hat could be better than opening up a box of sweet treats during the holiday season? Talia Krites suggests giving a gift of scrumptious delights she offers at the Flour Girls Cafe and Bakery. Krites opened the business three years ago and each year she sees an increase in customers. During the holidays, Krites can spend between 12 to 15 hours a day at her business in downtown Elizabeth City on Water Street. Krites prepares treat boxes in small, medium and large sizes that contain wonderful delights like truffles, pretzels, peanut butter balls, brownies and cookies. The large box is a good size for a family of five people, according to Krites.

With attention to detail and creative flair, Krites makes sugar cookies that will bring smiles. Charming reindeer, Christmas trees, presents, bows, Santa and Mrs. Claus are just a few of the designs of her sugar cookies. With each new season, Krites looks forward to ordering new cookie cutters with an array of shapes and designs. Krites said she has made between 400 and 600 cookies during past holiday seasons. That represents a lot of work, even if it's a labor of love: The cookies take a minimum of eight hours to prepare.

Krites can personalize cookies and treats for custom orders. A gift option is the sugar cookie box with two cookies boxed with a bow for the holidays. One of her favorite cookies to make is gingerbread. “I love to make gingerbread cookies,” said Krites. For a fun cookie decorating activity for kids to complete at home, Krites said, people may purchase the cookies and order icing. Krites’ mother, Cathy Coppola, works with her daughter in the bakery. Originally from New Jersey, Coppola moved with her family to Elizabeth City more than 25 years ago. Krites said the bakery’s signature chocolate chip cookies are her mother’s recipe. Although Krites locates some ideas for her baked items online through resources like Pinterest, many recipes are from Coppola’s collection. “A lot of our recipes are my mom’s,” said Krites.

Green apples covered in caramel, white chocolate or milk chocolate with sprinkles or nuts can be a “perfect gift,” each individually packaged in a box, said Krites. And cakes and pies are always an option. “We make a ton of custom cakes and pies,” said Krites. Krites said one of the most popular items is a cheesecake pecan pie, and her personal favorite is the traditional chocolate mousse pie. Coconut cream, Reese’s peanut butter, apple, and lemon meringue are just a few of the pies that Krites makes for her customers. Krites also bakes an assortment of cakes including a delectable collection of flavors including vanilla buttercream, chocolate, cookie dough and Reese’s Peanut Butter. Among the customer favorites are cupcakes with strings of Christmas lights, Santa hats and gingerbread. And what would the Christmas holiday season be without Santa? Santa Claus will visit the Flour Girls Cafe and Bakery on Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to noon. The full menu will be available, as well as, an opportunity for children to have a photo taken with the famous jolly man in red. Krites also offers cake decorating classes. “They have been really successful,” Krites said, referring to the classes. “They do really well.”

She instructs participants step-bystep on how to decorate cakes. “I like them to be unique so every single cake doesn’t look the same,” said Krites. The $40 fee for the class includes all the materials needed for the class, a beverage and dessert. Dates for the classes can be found on the bakery’s Facebook page or calling 252-3312230. The bakery offers holiday trays of petite desserts for people planning holiday parties so they may easily pick up the treats while engaging with other guests. Krites said the trays are pretty and make occasions “real festive.” The bakery space is available for holiday parties. Customers often order items from Krites for their holiday celebrations. Back Porch I am grateful for things that have lasted and that bear witness to things that matter. The Albemarle is full of history and of buildings – houses, courthouses and such – that bear witness to some of that history. Efforts to preserve remnants of history and to interpret that history for future generations continue unabated. On the campus of Elizabeth City State University the Rosenwald Practice School is being preserved and re-purposed as an African-American Heritage Center for northeastern North Carolina. That is an exciting and important development not only for Elizabeth City and ECSU but for the region. Edenton already has an incredible array of historical buildings for a town its size, or for that matter for a town of any size, but the community is not taking a breather. Expanded opportunities are being developed at the James Iredell House and the community is taking steps to preserve the 1718 house – the oldest house ever discovered in North Carolina that's still standing. Although it's not anywhere near as old as the 1718 house or the Iredell House, the Taylor Theater in downtown Edenton is historic in its own right and it has gotten a new lease on life for (at least) the second time as the community has rallied around keeping its downtown entertainment destination intact for audiences to enjoy. Edenton continues to work on new ways to

highlight the remarkable history of black Edentonians such as Harriet Jacobs, who escaped from slavery in Edenton and became an accomplished author. Perquimans County has its own wonderful slices of history, including the Newbold-White house and the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Museum. Camden has opened its own history museum and it's loaded with interesting artifacts and displays. Knowledgeable volunteers help to interpret the story of Camden County. The largest of the museums in the area is Museum of The Albemarle in Elizabeth City. This museum teaches and celebrates the history of the region and always has something fascinating to tell you about this place we call home. Another thing you might notice is that our area has a significant number of highway historical markers. These are another reminder of the history that surrounds us. The most recent of these markers is one in Elizabeth City that celebrates Peter W. Moore, the first chief executive of the educational institution that today is Elizabeth City State University. The marker stands near an elementary school that today bears his name. It's another example of things that have lasted and that bear witness to things that matter.
