Ayden.. . The beginning through today

In the late 1800s, a farmer in the southern part of what is now Pitt County, decided that a portion of his farm would make a great place to live if only it had a railroad depot. William Henry Harris was able to convince the Atlantic coast line, now CSX, of the same, and soon a 40 acre parcel of land was divided into residential lots surrounding a depot in “Harristown”, with Mr. Harris owning every other lot. During the next several years, lots were sold and homes built. Businesses begin to spring up to support the new residents, and on February 3, 1891, the town was incorporated as “Ayden” a name, as area storytellers claim was discovered by a local on a map of the world. Within a few years, the Carolina Christian College and the Free Will Baptist Seminary were established. By 1919, Ayden had full-time electricity supplied by the Ayden Municipal Light Plant. In 1922, the Mutual Building and Loan Association of Ayden was organized to help families obtain mortgages to build homes in Ayden. After experiencing tough times during the depression, and after the Second World War, the town began the long period of prosperity that continues today. To accommodate this growth, commercial, cultural, religious, and other establishments have sprung up within and around Ayden. Medical clinics, recreation programs, parks, churches, restaurants, and other public and private facilities have developed and expanded. Today Ayden encompasses over 5 mi² and his home of over 5000 residents. The community is continuing to prepare it self for new growth is Pitt County, home of East Carolina Pirates and the Brody School of Medicine, continues to develop as a major economic hub for eastern North Carolina. While focusing on progressive planning and growth management for the future, Ayden, continues to strive to maintain the character and quality for which the town has become known and is branded as “ One of America’s best small communities to raise a family“. Today, Ayden is home to three wonderful festivals: the official North Carolina Collard Festival, the Kings of Q: BBQ Cook Off and Festival, and Christmas Town in Ayden. We are also home to two world renowned barbecue restaurants, Bum’s Restaurant and Skylight Inn. Ayden has been slowly and steadily growing for decades. Over the last 16 years there has been a population increase of nearly 12%, or nearly 550 persons. TThis increase will continue due to the recent completion of the Southwest Bypass, which we prefer to call the Ayden Connector, and the approval by the Board of Commissioners of over 700 new homes to be built in the next 10 years.

Community Vision: The 2030 Plan

“Ayden is a small town on the rise. The town is characterized by a strong sense of community, a vibrant and historic downtown, new neighborhoods, a network of parks, and quality connections to nearby communities. By growing together, the Town will stay true to its roots as it expands its housing and employment options and strategically conserves farmland and its natural and cultural heritage.”

- Town Vision Statement

Community Goals

Land Use & Community Character Ayden is a community shaped by its historic downtown and agricultural roots. The Town will accommodate a range of housing options, new commercial and economic development, and maintain community character through development design.

Housing & Neighborhoods

Parks & Natural Resources

Ayden takes pride in and maintains its neighborhoods, which will be well-served by a network of parks and transportation choices. Ayden will offer a range of housing options that build on the diversity of the community and allow people to both raise a family and age in place, all while enjoying the small-town charm that makes Ayden unique.

Ayden prioritizes the preservation of the natural environment. By protecting the floodplain, tree canopy, and farmlands, Ayden will build a sustainable community while staying true to its agricultural heritage. A connected system of parks connects Ayden’s neighborhoods to nature and to one another and encourages a healthy lifestyle for all of its citizens.

Planning Phase:

Ayden encompasses over 3 square miles and is home to approximately 5,000 residents. The community is continuing to prepare itself for new growth as Pitt County continues to develop as a major industrial and economic center for Eastern North Carolina. •

A downtown pocket park is budgeted in the 2020.

A greenway and neighborhood bikeway are proposed to connect the Ayden District Park to downtown.

The town desires to focus a trail system along Swift Creek where majority of valuable habitat is located.

Seven new neighborhoods containing 700 new homes to be built within the next ten years.

Meetings and Elections The Town of Ayden follows the Mayor-Council form of government. This consists of an elected mayor (elected at-large), and 5 elected town commissioners (elected at-large). The council has the authority to formulate and adopt town policies. The mayor attends and presides over council meetings but does not vote, except in the case of a tie. Ayden employees a town manager to carry out the directives of the board of commissioners and the day to day cares of the town. The office of the Town Manager is inside of Town Hall located at 4144 West Avenue. Non-partisan elections are held every other year in November, with the commissioners serving staggered 4 year terms. Regular business meetings of the Board of Commissioners is held on the 2nd Monday of the month. Meetings are held at 7pm in the District Courtroom on the second floor of the Town Hall. The public is invited to attend these meetings. During the pandemic, meetings may be held on computer platforms such as Zoom. If you would like to attend the virtual meetings, look on our Facebook page for the information or call Town Hall at 252-481-5817.
