TRANSPORTATION Transportation in Greenville got a new hub in 2018 with the opening of the of 600 S. Pitt St. The center is a centrally located transfer facility where all local and regional transportation services can connect. The Greenville Area Transit system (GREAT bus system), Pitt Area Transit (PATS), ECU Transit, and Greyhound each utilize the facility for connections along with taxis and the Amtrak Connector. Airport, medical, and hotel shuttles could also locate there with future rail service also a possibility. The Pitt County Animal Shelter is at 4550 County Home Road next to the Leroy James Farmers’ Market and behind the recycling center. Michele Whaley is director. Email michele.whaley@pittcountync.gov. The website is www.pittcountync. gov/153/Animal-Services or call 902-1725. The shelter handles pet adoptions, temporarily houses lost pets and picks up stray animals in the county. Also, rabies control operations are housed there. Animals that have bitten must be reported and will be quarantined 10 days. Low-cost rabies vaccination clinics are held each year at various locations in the county. Before attempting to surrender a pet, an owner should call the shelter to see if space is available. Hours are 1-5 p.m. weekdays, and a $20 surrender fee is charged. Proof of ownership is required. The shelter cannot guarantee that surrendered pets will be made available for adoption. The shelter loans traps for residents having problems with stray dogs. Adoption hours are 1-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Adoption fees are $110 for dogs and $85 for cats. Adoption includes spay/neuter, a rabies vaccination and microchipping. Canine Control Ordinances It is unlawful for dogs to roam freely in unincorporated areas of Pitt County. To report a dog 1725. Pitt County’s unemployment rate has fallen consistently through 2018 to 4.2 percent in July, six-tenths of a percent lower than the rate in July 2017,

according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of Business Research at East Carolina University. Pitt County ranked at 60 among North Carolina’s 100 counties. The state’s unemployment rate in July was 4.1 percent, a onetenth point drop from June’s rate of 4.2 percent and threetenths of a point lower than the North Carolina unemployment rate of 4.4 percent in July 2017. There were 86,856 people employed in Pitt County in July, an increase of 361 over June’s number and 1,877 more than were working in July of 2017, according to the data. There were 3,756 people unemployed in the county in July, 324 fewer than were jobless in June and 536 fewer than in July of 2017.

COURT SYSTEM Pitt County court system Pitt County Superior and District Courts are part on the North Carolina court system. Operations are largely funded through state appropriations and facilities through county funds. Waste, Recycling Pitt County operates 14 collection and recycling centers in the unincorporated areas of the county that may be used by anyone to dispose of residential waste and recyclables. For detailed information on types of recyclables and waste accepted at the centers, call the recycling coordinator at 902-3353. Door-to-door collection of garbage in Pitt County can be contracted with various waste-collection companies. Residential garbage collection within the corporate limits of municipalities is the responsibility of the town or city government. Pitt County operates one solid waste transfer station on Allen Road, just west of Greenville. The site is used for solid waste operations and is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. A fee is charged for non-residential waste.
