Ahoy from Mackenzie Flashback to September 2016 with me, if you will. East Carolina University was set to take on N.C. State at noon, and at 8 a.m., I had just woken up in my apartment; the smell of bacon and cheap beer already lingering from the kitchen. My friends started to pour in, each carrying their own choice of poison — Miller Lite for me, Bud Light for others, and rum for the really brave — and all dressed in their own version of purple and gold. They each high fived me as they walked in. “Go Pirates,” they’d say, and I’d say it back with no hesitation. “Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown Band blasted from my third floor apartment. It was 9:45 a.m. It was an ECU gameday. One of the best ones I’ve experienced in my short but treasured tenure as a Pirate, in fact. The game was hot. Nearly 100 degrees and the midday Greenville sun showed no mercy. It wasn’t pleasant, but I didn’t care. Neither did the people next to me, who I didn’t know, but by halftime we were best friends. ECU beat N.C. State 33-30 that day. The atmosphere of that game gives me chills even as I type this nearly two years later. When my friends back home in Maryland ask me why I chose to be a Pirate, I think about that day. I think about those strangers I high fived who are now friends. I think about the roar of the crowd, the sea of purple, the unmistakable bond of Pirates. This is a special place. And that’s what this magazine is about. Enjoy, and as always, go Pirates. Love and light,

here must be something in the water. Or rather, maybe it’s in the blood. Because those who are a part of East Carolina University’s culture, know that purple runs deeper than water. They know that purple, in all aspects of the sentiment, is in their blood.

And zoom in on a town about 80 miles east of North Carolina’s capital city, what may seem like a tiny blimp on a great big map is actually something much bigger. Much much bigger. What you’ll find is a group of people who know heartbreak; who know joy. A group of people who face hardships and overcome them. You’ll find a unified force of purple and gold; a force that’s bigger than a ballgame, bigger than a season. You’ll find a

group a people who know the ocean comes in waves, and choose to ride the waves as they come. You’ll find a way of life. “This is more like a lifelong passion for me,” said Jimmy Rostar, a 1997 alumnus of ECU and Greenville resident. Wander over to the corner of 14th Street and Berkley Street on a fall Saturday afternoon and without problem you’ll stumble upon Rostar and “The Corner Crew,” a group of unapologetically unwavering Pirate fans who have likely been out there grilling food and celebrating for six hours already. The group was even crowned with the statewide Tailgate of the Year title by the David Glenn Show. It will smell like cheeseburgers, barbecue and beer, but most importantly, if you’re a Pirate fan, it will feel like home. “It’s just the consciousness of Greenville,” Rostar said of East Carolina football. Rostar has weathered the many storms that come with being a Pirate fan, but he’s also ridden the waves of success onto the shore with great pleasure. He’s been through it all, and

that only adds to the reason why he will stand with the Pirates, win or lose. “We don’t leave until the last note of the alma mater is played,â€? he said. “It’s a keep the faith.â€? In other words, the Pirates will always be back, he said. Bryan Edge, a 1997 alumnus of ECU, said from the outside looking in the ECU fanbase might not make a lot of sense, especially given the stereotypes surrounding the culture. But he knows once you’re in it, you understand that it’s unlike any other — something you have to see to believe, something you have to experience and live to really get it. “I just remember thinking every time someone new comes to Greenville, they experience tailgating, they’re just floored. We take it to another degree,â€? Edge said. “My father would say ‘People ‘round get here get fired up about this.’ I’d say, ‘Yea, we’ve had to endure a lot.’â€? And perhaps the battery fans have to endure only drives the Pirate loyals closer together. “I like the fact that our fans stay loyal and bold, just like the song. It just says a lot about our school,â€? Edge said. For longtime Pirate fan Bert Smith, it’s more than just dealing with loss; it’s the chip on everyone’s shoulder that makes the fanbase what it is. It’s Pirate faithful saying to the doubters: “We don’t care.â€? “ECU has always been considered as the less than, the underdog. It’s always been an uphill fight,â€? Smith said. “That’s the chip on our shoulder. That’s in this fanbase.â€? Smith’s pirate blood traces back to 1968 when his father bought a car dealership and his family moved to Greenville. Smith was only 12 at the time, but started going to Pirate games right away. “It was the thing to do,â€? he said. It wasn’t until later, though, did Smith learn what it really meant to be a Pirate. After a two year stint in military school and a short attempt at N.C. State, Smith moved back to Greenville and started school at ECU shortly after. He then really saw the uphill battle ECU faced — compared to the neighboring schools of N.C. State, Duke and UNC, East Carolina was close to nothing. That feeling carries over to the sports teams, Smith said, and was quick to bring up the 2008 matchup versus West Virginia University; a game nobody thought East Carolina had a fighting chance in, but they dominated the Mountaneers in a 28-3 victory. “They were ranked No. 8 in the country. They came to town and of course they thought they were gonna win‌ They came to town and we dusted their butt. We stormed the field,â€? Smith said.

“I don’t care what the team is or what they’re ranked. They’re just…next,” Smith said. “They are just next on our schedule.” He was also quick to point out the 1991 season, when head coach Bill Lewis led the team to the Peach Bowl against N.C. State where nobody thought the Pirates would pull it off — but they overcame the Wolfpack 37-34. “We showed them that’s why we’re called Pirates.” Edge said he’s fine with the chip on his shoulder — if schools want to silence ECU, let them. He knows ECU, and it’s fans, will not and can not be silenced. “We’re always gonna be here. We’re always gonna irritate you. We’re always gonna be the team on the schedule that when they see our name, they take a big sigh,” Edge said. But, while most fans would like to see that chip eventually wear off, the Pirate Faithful also know that living in the shadows of these giants is where they have thrived for years, and will continue to thrive for years to come. “We’re kind of against the North Carolina culture. We’re the other guys. But it’s fun to be that way,” Edge said. Unlike Smith and Rostar, Edge didn’t grow up with the purple and gold running through his veins. Growing up in the 80s, East Carolina University wasn’t exactly a popular choice. A Greensboro native and Central Carolina Community College transfer, Edge was raised a Tarheel fan, but when he drove to the beach with his family and cut through Greenville, Edge was hooked immediately. So, he got what he calls a “blood transfusion,” and traded in the light blue for a deeper hue. “My brother-in-law and niece still can’t understand that,” he said. “I just laugh and say, ‘Well, it’s kind of a long story.” And now, that long story is explained by the “one of us” culture East Carolina has successfully cultivated through the years. It’s explained by the undeniable bond of Pirates. “It wouldn’t matter your political background, Republican or Democrat, black or white, if you were in Texas. If you are wearing purple and gold, that’s a family member.”

Because after all, purple blood is purple blood.

NO DOUBT Some things are ju

S

ometimes in life, you come across things that when you see them, it can only mean one thing.

At a Grateful Dead show, it’s eating grilled cheeses on Shakedown Street. At a Toby Keith concert, it’s drinking Bud Light while playing cornhole in cowboy boots. At Mardi Gras, it’s purple, green and gold beads and King cake. And at an East Carolina University football game, there are a few things that without-a-doubt, mean it’s gameday when the Pirates are playing.

st inherently “Pira t

e”

PURPLE... GOLD

If you’re a football fan — or even just a Pirate in general — then you know what this means. It’s got to be the No. 1 tradition and the first thing I learned when I chose to become a Pirate (other than that ECU stands for “Everyday Carry Umbrella,” which is actually equally as relevant). When one half of the stadium says “Purple” and the other half erupts into a massive roar of “GOLD,” it’s electric.

WOOOAAAAHHH… WE’RE HALFWAY THERE

My parents once tagged me in a video on Facebook where you could clear-as-day make out the crowd at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium singing “Livin’ On A Prayer” by Bon Jovi as loud as they could, and it almost brought me to tears. This moment is one of my fondest memories of being at an ECU game — besides the day the sky turned purple after ECU beat UNC 71-40, of course.

Before the fourth quarter, the iconic “No Quarter” flag is hoisted over the Boneyard: the Pirates won’t back down.

Pirate Football By Ronnie Woodward Mixer Magazine

A

nother East Carolina football season is quickly approaching and this is a year that ECU will likely have to prove doubters wrong after posting consecutive 3-9 records. The Pirates and third-year coach Scottie Montgomery expressed optimism during the spring about a new-look defense under coordinator David Blackwell — a former Pirate player — and some offensive firepower led by senior receiver Trevon Brown, but the goal of making a bowl game might need to be sparked by a hot start to the campaign. ECU is set to play five games in September, beginning with home contests against North Carolina A&T and North Carolina in Dowdy-Ficklven Stadium. “We have gotten a lot better and I really want that to show,” Montgomery said during spring practice. “I want these guys to realize that these (practice) days can turn into great Saturdays.” ECU actually won its final home game last season, routing Cincinnati 48-20 behind 578 offensive yards. But the 3-9 campaign ended the next week in lackluster fashion with a 70-13 loss at Memphis, and it after that rough day for the Pirates was when Montgomery brought up a bowl game for this year. “I haven’t made a whole lot of guarantees since I got here, but we’ll be a better football team, and we’re going to go play in the postseason next year,” he said. “I’m convicted, and I know the guys will be. We’ve got to add a few pieces to the puzzle, there’s no question, and we’ve got to do some things differently and I accept that. That’s exactly what we’ll do.”

22

KEY PLAYERS TREVON BROWN #88

RECEIVER:

The Wilmington native had a 1,000-yard receiving season as a junior and this spring he was easily ECU’s go-to player on offense. He showed that off during the Purple-Gold Game at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, where he made nine catches for 169 yards in an impressive outing. As a 6-foot-2 senior and proven playmaker, Brown is eyeing a big season and getting drafted into the NFL after his final run with the Pirates.

HOLTON AHLERS FRESHMAN

QUARTERBACK:

Many in Greenville have known about Ahlers for years thanks to his football and baseball prowess as a youngster and then at D.H. Conley High School. He’s now a freshman quarterback for the Pirates and sophomore Reid Herring has the edge on the starting QB spot, but all signs point toward Ahlers also having an impact on this team. The left-hander is 6-2, 235, and is a quality running QB, which he showed during the spring, and many eyes will be on him this fall in a role of some kind along with Herring and his passing ability.

AARON RAMSEUR #51

LINEBACKER:

East Carolina had one of the worst defenses in the county a season ago and that proved costly, but some young players also gained valuable experience during the process. At linebacker that led to the emergence of Ramseur and Bruce Bivens. They are both sophomores now and slated to start. Montgomery and Blackwell have talked a lot about the size, speed and potential of this young pair, but Ramseur also made six starts in 2017 and is expected to be a key part of the Pirates this year despite being an underclassman.

KEY GAMES SEPT. 1, VS. NC A&T

This game is important because it is the first contest of the season and it is in Greenville, but also because of what happened to begin the 2017 season. James Madison was a 7-point underdog and came into Greenville and rolled to 34-14 win that sent shockwaves nationwide in a frustrating season-opener for the Pirates and their fans. The Aggies are not expected to be as good as James Madison was during that day, but N.C. A&T will have upset aspirations after an undefeated record in 2017 and win in the Celebration Bowl.

SEPT. 8, VS. NORTH CAROLINA

East Carolina loves to knock off an Atlantic Coast Conference team and a win at Virginia Tech is always difficult to produce, so the Pirates’ best shot at an ACC win likely comes during Week 2 of the season at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium against the Tar Heels. ECU has won the last two meetings over UNC, and many Pirate fans remember in 2014 when the Tar Heels and came to Greenville and left with a 70-41 loss. The Heels also went 3-9 a year ago and will be looking for a key early-season victory at East Carolina.

NOV. 10, AT TULANE

ECU has five road games on its schedule and the first three are early in the season and will be difficult to win against Virginia Tech, South Florida and Temple. The Pirates will probably need to steal a game or two on the road to get to six wins and a bowl game, and against Tulane on Nov. 10 looks like a good opportunity. The Green Wave won an overtime game in Greenville a year ago. The final two games for ECU after playing Tulane are at home versus Connecticut and then at Cincinnati.

AROUND COUNTRY THE

Many of the blue-blood programs will be in the College Football Playoff hunt once again, led by Clemson from the Atlantic Coast Conference and defending national champion Alabama from the SEC. Alabama’s offense returns two talented and experienced quarterbacks along with a loaded backfield led by senior Damien Harris. This is coach Nick Saban’s 12th season with the Crimson Tide and he has five national titles in 11 seasons at Alabama. Watch out for the Big 10, which has Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State all with big aspirations. The Phil Steele College Football Preview Magazine ranks all 130 teamas in a power poll, and Duke is the top in-state squad at No. 29. N.C. State is No. 43, North CaroCaro lina 45th, Wake Forest No. 46 and East Carolina is 116th.
