Safety 1st… the AE Smith way Townsville
Putting Safety 1st sets new record New Safety milestones are being reached throughout AE Smith, with a record 100 Loss Time Injury (LTI) Free Days achieved company wide (picture above: Brisbane Construction team).
Melbourne
“It’s the first time since company records have been kept that we’ve turned over a three month LTI milestone,” comments National Safety Manager, Danny O’Reilly. “Thanks to a heightened awareness of injury and incident potential, teams across the company are truly demonstrating that we are putting safety first,” he adds.
Sydney
“As part of CIBSE’s charter to contribute to the evolution of building design, construction and maintenance it’s important we ensure costs are not a barrier to stimulating thought and imagination through education,” adds Peter. With over 10 years at AE Smith leading the Melbourne based Engineering team, Peter is also a Green Star Accredited Professional, a director of ARBS and also holds an Honours Degree in Building Services Engineering from London South Bank University, UK. For more information on CIBSE membership and education visit the AE Smith website and follow the links.
In particular, Tasmania, Victoria and Perth Service teams, plus Facility 1st and Corporate branches have all achieved 500 LTI Free days, while Tasmania Construction and Facility 1st have passed the 1000 LTI Free milestone! But while incidents have reduced by half compared to this time two years ago, Danny warns about becoming complacent:

Peter Kinsella appointed to lead CIBSE Cairns Peter Kinsella
New Regional Chairman for Building Services Peak Body
Congratulations Peter on your distinguished appointment.
AE Smith’s Melbourne based Engineering Manager, Peter Kinsella has been appointed as the Australia & New Zealand Regional Chairman of the Charted Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). As the international professional body for the building services profession, CIBSE has a membership of over 17,000 in 80 countries.
“We’ve become very good as a team recognising potential for incidents on site and analysing why incidents have happened to try and avoid them in the future - but we must become equally conscious of the behavioural element that contributes to injuries,” adds Danny.
Peter’s appointment as this region’s new Chairman comes at a time when an environmental spotlight on the built environment is firmly on the national agenda.
The next phase of the Safety 1st training and education will focus on the behavioural side to risk and hazard assessment and management.
“The building services industry is facing a major change of focus from lowest price tendered work to projects that place building efficiency and sustainability front and centre - it’s an exciting time to be at the coalface,” comments Peter.
For more information about Safety 1st email Danny O’Reilly at safety1st@aesmith.com.au or call him on 0413 153 838.
Peter’s vision for CIBSE in Australia and New Zealand is to help provide information and education for members that’s relevant, available and affordable.

10,000 Trees by 2010 with Greenfleet New Zealand go one step further While AE Smith’s major tree planting initiative is gaining momentum offsetting an estimated 1,500 tonnes of CO2 emitted from 160 AE Smith company vehicles every year… the New Zealand AE Smith team have gone one step further and purchased an entire service fleet of dedicated LPG utes from Ford. . “Investing in more efficient technology is a key part to reducing an organisation's greenhouse impact and converting a fleet of company cars to LPG means around 10% less emissions.” Sara Gipton, CEO - Greenfleet.
6 Cool Breeze by AE Smith
AE Smith fights greenhouse gas emissions “We’re always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact,” says AE Smith Group General Manager, Aldo Cevaal. “One of the most important areas is reducing and offsetting the CO2 emissions that we generate as a business. Greenfleet help us by promoting new technologies that can lead to lower CO2 emissions and by undertaking reforestation projects that remove CO2 from the atmosphere,” he adds. The partnership will help AE Smith achieve a goal of planting 10,000 trees by 2010 as part of a bid to help reduce the impacts of the air conditioning industry on the environment. “There are several reasons for choosing Greenfleet as our partner; firstly they are a Federal Government Greenhouse Friendly™ Approved Abatement Provider. In addition, their planting projects use a mix of native trees local to the areas planted that help prevent soil erosion, reduce water salinity and provide a habitat for native animal species,” comments Aldo. Here are some ways that you can also reduce your own personal carbon footprint:
