His big win aside, there’s good reason the Joker star’s emotions are running high: Sources say the couple, who were spotted visiting the California Fertility Partners clinic in Los Angeles on Jan. 2, have decided it’s time to start a family! “They’re not yet ready to tell the world,” an insider reveals to Star. “But the cat is out of the bag.” Joaquin, 45, and Rooney, 34, who first hooked up in 2016, apparently started trying to conceive even before they got engaged last May. “But when nothing happened, they began to explore other options late last year, and the word is they’re
looking at IVF,” dishes another source. “Even though Joaquin is crazy busy with his career, he doesn’t want to wait any longer to have a child, and Rooney feels the same” — even more so since her sister, House of Cards actress Kate, 36, welcomed a daughter with her actor husband, Jamie Bell, last May. As excited as they are, “it can be a stressful process, but they’re staying positive and are incredibly supportive of each other,” the pal adds. URING a revealing interview with Star on Jan. 8, a visibly emotional Alex Trebek expressed his gratitude to the loyal fans who’ve shown their support as he battles stage IV pancreatic cancer. “My message to them is a big thank-you for all the cards and letters and prayers,” said the beloved 79-year-old Jeopardy! host, who announced his devastating diagnosis in March 2019. “On Christmas Day, I took my family to the Lakers game, and the broadcaster leaned over to me and wished me luck, saying, ‘Alex, you know there’s a terrific power in prayer,’” the television icon continued with tears in his eyes. “I was very touched by that.” These days, very little is off-limits for the beloved TV personality, who went on to talk about everything from his health (he has “good days and bad days,” he says) to his silliest behind-the-scenes pranks to his retirement plans and making the most of the time he has left. “It doesn’t matter how I’ve been feeling backstage or in my dressing room,” says the doting husband and father (he and his wife of 29 years, Jean, 55, have two children, Matthew, 28, and Emily, 26), who’s hosted the hit game show for 36 years. “For some reason, when they introduce me, I can suck it up. It’s just showtime!” LIVING IN THE MOMENT And he’s in no rush to give up his duties just yet. “As long as I feel my skills haven’t diminished too much, and as long as I’m enjoying spending time with bright people, I’ll continuing doing it,” says Alex, who looked somewhat frail presiding over the game show’s Greatest of All Time tournament earlier this month. “You can’t find a better environment in which to work than Jeopardy!,” adds the Canada native, who hosted a slew of shows before landing his dream job in 1984. When he does decide he’s ready to call it a day, he has a plan for how he’ll say farewell to his faithful fans and viewers. “I made this decision a long time ago, that I’d do it on a whim,” he reveals. “On that particular day, I’ll speak to our producer/director and tell them, ‘Give me 30 seconds at the end of the program.’ That’s all I need to say goodbye, because it’s going to be the last show.”
And what will he do then? “Drive home,” Alex says with a laugh. For now, his retirement plans are low-key — despite joking that he’ll drink a lot in his spare time, the avid tinkerer says he’ll likely “work around the house.” Not surprisingly, an insider told Star he’s also spending as much time as he can with his family. “Alex leans on his wife, Jean, the most, and she continues to have a posi-

HANGING IN As for how he’s currently feeling, Alex says he’s taking things “month by month.” He recently had to go off one of the chemo drugs his doctors were giving him “because it was killing me,” he admits. And his memory sn’t what it used to be.“Some weeks are good and some weeks are bad,” he explains. “But, hey, it comes with the territory.” (He also reveals he’s been wearing a toupee on the show.) Alex is very humble when it comes to the legacy he hopes to eave behind. “I want people to think, ‘He was a nice guy and the best kind of quiz-show host in that he always seemed to be rooting for the contestants,’” he says. “‘He wanted them to perform at their best, because if they did, that would make the show a success.’” The star adds that he’d like to believe he’s made a difference in people’s lives: “I hope I’ve been an influence for good and for the benefit of not minimizing the importance of knowledge in one’s life.” And for the value of a bit of fun as well. He tells Star he “loves” the impersonation comedian Will Ferrell did of him on Saturday Night Live, and reveals he once pranked contestants by coming to the stage with no pants on: “I got them good.” He also says his tendency to curse while the cameras aren’t rolling earned him a fitting nickname: Trash Mouth Trebek! But his favorite pop-culture moment was his guest spot on Cheers. “Ted Danson and the whole cast were so friendly and kind,” he recalls. “It was one of the first times I’d been asked to do a cameo on a popular sitcom, and I was in heaven!” He’s still feeling blessed. “I’ve had the good fortune of hosting this show,” he says, looking back on a life well-lived. “I’ve been extremely lucky.
