he warm smile, the tender hug, the clasped hands that lingered just a moment longer than necessary … Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s loving display of affection at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last week said it all – Hollywood’s former golden couple have finally made their way back to each other. Almost 15 years to the day after Brad walked out on their five-year marriage and into the arms of his Mr and Mrs Smith co-star Angelina Jolie, the internet went into meltdown on January 20 at the sight of the reunited couple’s backstage embrace. Moments before the pictures were taken, Jennifer had joyfully accepted a gong for her role in The Morning Show and Brad – who had earlier scooped his own award for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – had

stopped dead in his tracks, ignoring everything and everyone around him, to watch his former wife make her speech. The Oscar winner shed a tear and gushed, “Oh wow” as he watched Jennifer make her thank yous and as the Friends alum made her exit off stage, it was Brad who was standing there, waiting to be the first person to celebrate with her. The moment couldn’t have been more intimate, with Jennifer, 50, tenderly placing her hand on her ex-husband’s chest and whispering in his ear before Brad, 56, clutched her arm in a bid to pull her back to him as she was ushered away. And while the couple were temporarily separated in order to give press interviews about their respective wins, an insider says they continued to flaunt their reunion at the after-party. “Brad and Jen made no

They only had eyes for each other, with Jen beaming from ear to ear as Brad spun her around and doted on her throughout the entire evening. “After avoiding each other in public at all costs for so many years, they didn’t care about sparking the rumour mill any longer. They just wanted to break the ice and be seen together, knowing they have nothing to hide.â€?

Fans rejoiced at the sight of the former lovebirds back in each other’s arms and fellow celebrities, too, couldn’t help but wade in on the buzz. Jamie Lynn Spears, 28, quipped, “We will be telling our grandkids about thisâ€?, Rumer Willis, 31, tweeted, “My tender heart can’t take this,â€? and even Jen’s BFF Courteney Cox, 55, liked a string of posts celebrating the reunion, conďŹ rming that Jennifer’s close circle of friends has forgiven the Ad Astra actor for leaving Jen heartbroken when he left her for Angelina, 44. As Woman’s Day reported last week, Brad and Jennifer have been quietly mending their broken friendship since dad-of-six Brad – still in the throes of his divorce from Angelina – attended Jen’s 50th birthday bash in February last year. The pair recently spent a healing New Year’s break in Mexico and Jennifer, who

divorced her second husband Justin Theroux in 2017, recently met Brad’s three youngest kids, Shiloh, 13, and 11-yearold twins Knox and Vivienne. Now, says our insider, Jennifer and Brad are “hellbent on putting the past behind them and making a fresh start. “Brad sometimes stays at Jen’s Bel Air mansion, dishes the showbiz insider. “And he’s even started talking about buying a new place together to start over. But Jen’s insisted she wants to wait until she’s 100% sure they’re going to go the distance before making any big steps. Determined to prove he’s serious, Brad, meanwhile, has been planning a 51st birthday surprise for Jennifer next month, which her friends are helping to arrange. “He’s hiring out her favourite restaurant Gjelina for an intimate dinner party, spills the source. “With her birthday falling two days after

the Oscars, he’s been joking that she’ll ďŹ nally be able to eat and drink after being on a strict regimen for the awards season. He’s arranged for her favourite Mexican chef to handbake churros with caramel sauce for breakfast on the morning of her birthday. “Jen and Brad have done a lot of talking over the last year and have even had some joint therapy sessions in an attempt to heal old wounds and move forward.â€? The insider adds, “Jen’s always held a candle for Brad and has never stopped loving him. She’s learnt to forgive and move on from what happened – insisting that if she doesn’t let go of the old hurts, she may never know what could have been between them. “She’s telling friends how she’s excited to ďŹ nally be able to give their love a second shot and hopefully ďŹ nd her happily ever after.â€? #

INSIDE HARRY & ME NEW The upshot of his decision is sinking in

T

Farewelling the UK at a charity event (left), the prince ditches his suit for casual attire as he arrives back in Vancouver Island (above).

FINAL SALUTE

Proud of his army days, Harry can no longer wear the uniform he so cherished.

o put it mildly, it had been a long two weeks. And when an emotional and exhausted Prince Harry finally walked through the door of his Vancouver Island mansion and into the arms of his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, he couldn’t stop the tears rolling down his cheeks. He was home at last – but at an enormous cost. In one tumultuous fortnight, the once-popular prince had turned his back on everything he’d known since the day he was born: his life as a royal, his country, his family. Now, he was about to start not just a new chapter of his life, but a brand-new book. “Their reunion was incredibly emotional,” a well-placed insider says. “The heavy burden Harry had felt about telling his family, and the world, was finally off his shoulders. “He was overcome with emotion when he saw Meghan and there were lots of tears. And Archie kicked his legs and squealed when his dad arrived back, which only made him even more tearful.” The days after January 8, when Harry and Meghan shocked the world by announcing their intention to pare down their royal duties and spend at least half their time in North America, were nothing short of a roller-coaster ride – particularly for Harry, who in the following days remained in England to thrash out an exit deal acceptable to the Queen. Becoming part-time royals, as it turned out, was not an option and instead the couple are walking away lock, stock and barrel from their roles as working senior royals and are, instead, suddenly free to make their own way in the world. “Harry is relieved to finally have all the stress and anxiety over and done with,” tells our insider. “But

it’s clear he’s still not completely comfortable with his decision. It’s going to take a while for everything to sink in.” Just hours before Harry arrived back in Canada, however, Meghan was already showing signs that she is thrilled at the prospect of her new life outside the constraints of the royal family. On January 20, the former Suits actress, 38, was snapped taking Archie and her two dogs for a walk along a woodland trail in the town of Victoria on Vancouver Island. She was full of smiles as she cradled Archie in his front pack and juggled the dogs’ leads, clearly enjoying her new-found freedom, although she was trailed by two security guards. “Meghan and Harry have both been craving an everyday, normal life,” explains the source. “They’ve dreamed about it for so long and now it’s here. But it’s going to be a much bigger adjustment for Harry than it is for Meghan. “He’s already told her how new this all is to him and his friends have warned Meghan that she’s going to have to be very understanding. It’s not going to be plain sailing and they both know that. Their plan right now is to take some time and create a new daily routine which hasn’t been set for them by the palace.” While Harry, 35, had confided in friends – even before he met Meghan – that he dreamed of “throwing it all in”, our insider says Meghan is desperately aware of just how much her husband has sacrificed for her and Archie by hanging up his royal hat. After a week of tense discussions between Harry, the Queen, 93, Prince Charles, 71, and Prince William, 37, and a small army of aides, a “Megxit” deal was reached

GHAN’S LIFE! on January 19, which will take effect in the Northern Hemisphere spring. While Harry will no longer use “His Royal Highness” and Meghan will no longer be called “Her Royal Highness”, they will retain their titles as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and Harry will still be a prince. They won’t be receiving money from the public purse – releasing them from any obligation to represent the Crown officially – but will likely still receive a stipend from Prince Charles’ private trust. Harry and Meghan are now free to make a crust commercially, such as the duchess returning to her acting career full-time. The Queen has requested, however, that whatever they do to make a living should remain “in line” with royal values. The Queen will

them to use Frogmore  allow Cottage, which was given to them as a wedding present, when they visit the UK – as long as they repay the $4.5 million that the British taxpayers forked out for renovations. They will also have to cough up market rent of around $715,000 a year. Her Majesty had only recently bestowed the presidency and vice-presidency of her Commonwealth Trust on Harry and Meghan respectively – along with her grandson being made her youth ambassador. The couple had indicated they wanted to keep these plum positions, but the Queen was having none of it and took the jobs back. But perhaps the biggest blow to Harry’s pride is the Queen stripping him of all titles and involvement in the UK military. One of his honorary titles is Captain General Royal Marines – one he took from his grandfather, Prince Philip, 98 – but now the former army combat soldier, who fought two tours of Afghanistan, will never again wear dress uniforms to formal occasions. Says a source, “This is devastating to Harry, who has always said he never felt more normal than when he was with his military mates. With them he could be ‘just Harry’ and now they’ve turned their backs on him.” Two days after the deal was struck, Harry broke his silence in a speech at a

14

Woman’s Day

private event in London for his charity Sentebale, saying the UK would always be his home and that, “It brings me great sadness that it has come to this” but in the end “there really was no other option”. “Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the Commonwealth, and my military associations but without public funding. Unfortunately that wasn’t possible.” Harry also mentioned in his speech his desire to lead a “more peaceful” existence, but our insider says Meghan already has a plan to kickstart the couple’s new celebrity life – and just how peaceful it will be remains to be seen. “Meghan’s got her pre-royal wardrobe out of storage in Toronto and is also looking to assemble some new ensembles with a fresh stylist. It’s going to be out with the schoolmarm pencil skirts and in with outfits that show off her figure. “She’s also been busy hiring a new team of publicists, management and agents,” tells the insider. “She’s looking at some of Hollywood’s biggest players because she aims to dip her toes back in the acting world.” Word has it Netflix has already indicated “immense interest” in a deal, with the streaming giant’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos enthusing, “Who wouldn’t be interested?”

In addition, Meghan is hoping Harry will soon make an association with the Rugby Union in Canada and maybe own his own team – a long-held dream of his. In the short term, Meghan is currently on a health kick, determined to shed the last of her baby weight ahead of a possible appearance at the Academy Awards early next month. “If she goes,” says the source, “she wants to wear something slinky, sexy and show-stopping. She’s literally shedding the royal ways one kilo and one item of conservative clothing at a time.” Questions, meanwhile, remain over who will foot the bill over the Sussexes’ ballooning $6 million-a-year security bill, with the palace refusing to discuss the new arrangements publicly. Meghan and Harry are happy to take things one day at a time. “There’s still a lot to iron out and leaving the royal fold is going to test their marriage to its limits,” claims our royal insider. “Harry has a lot of work to do on his mental health and wellbeing. He needs to spend time taking care of himself and ensuring that he doesn’t harbour feelings of resentment towards Meghan if and when he starts to struggle with his new life. It’s something they’re both afraid of.” #

Da CHARLE

A

s Prince Harry faced the music, finding himself saying goodbye to his life as a working royal – there was one silver lining to the whole sorry affair. He and Prince William have begun to end their two-year feud after realising it was a case of “now or never”. The formerly close brothers found time outside of Harry’s “Megxit” negotiations to hold their own secret peace talks because they both feared that if they didn’t, they might never heal the heartbreaking rift that has opened between them in recent years. “It has been groundbreaking in terms of saving their bond as brothers,” according to a palace insider. “They decided to cut out all the toxic people stirring around them to deal with each other man-to-man as brothers … and the family warmth is back.” The same, however, can’t be said for Harry’s relationship with Prince Charles and his stepmother, the Duchess of Cornwall. Through the loss and sorrow of Princess Diana’s death in 1997, Charles and Harry forged a deep bond that endured through Harry’s boisterous and booze-filled teenage years, during which

he was photographed stumbling out of nightclubs and taking a naked romp in Las Vegas. Now, a royal source tells Woman’s Day that Charles and Camilla, 72, continue to feel floored by how Harry and Meghan chose to make their exit, announcing it to the world before telling their own family. “Charles feels as if he was completely cut out by his son,” claims the insider. “It felt like a huge slap in the face and he’s made no bones to Harry about how disappointed he is.” Charles, who is the direct heir to the British throne, also feels “incredibly let down” by Meghan. The prince went out of his way to help the former

actress when, just days before her wedding, her father Thomas Markle had a heart attack and couldn’t be there to give her away. Instead it was Charles who walked her up the aisle and ensured her mother Doria Ragland, 63 – Meghan’s only family representative at the wedding – was well looked after during the ceremony and at the reception. “Since then, Charles has continued to be there for Meghan,” insists our source. “He made frequent trips to Frogmore Cottage to spend time with her and Archie, even when Harry wasn’t there. He phoned regularly to check in with her and even called Doria in California to make sure she knew she was

a valued part of the family. “He has been nothing but supportive and in return, he feels as if he has been treated like dirt. To say he is heartbroken is an understatement.” While Camilla is also upset with how Harry and Meghan ended things, the duchess “has a slightly different perspective to Charles”, says our insider, thanks to her years of being reviled as the “other woman” who caused great pain and sadness to Harry and William’s mother Princess Diana. She also, like Meghan, was a divorcée before marrying her prince. “Camilla’s been the glue trying to hold them all together, having experienced first-hand how media

In the 90-minute doco, which was filmed at his Mexican home, the 75-yearold shares snaps and videos of Meghan, who lived with him from the ages of 11 to 18. “I looked at her and saw her face and finger around my finger, and that was it,” says Thomas, who has never met his grandson

Archie. “I knew she was going to be special.” Despite his obvious affection for his girl, the retired Hollywood lighting director also talked about the rift that formed between them just before the Sussexes’ wedding. Thomas reveals that the last time he spoke to either of them was on his hospital bed after he suffered a heart attack. He says he told Harry, “It’s a shame I didn’t die because you both could pretend that you’re sad

– and then I hung up.” While he subsequently tried to reach out to the pair, they never replied. And, when it comes to the duke and duchess’ decision to step back as senior royals, Thomas isn’t short of things to say – including that they are cheapening the institution. “They are turning it into Walmart with a crown on … every young girl wants to become a princess. She got that and now she’s tossing it away.”

pressure can break someone down,” asserts the insider. “She’s been speaking to Meghan frequently since she left for Canada and has encouraged Charles to do the same in a bid to avoid a complete breakdown of communication. “She’s petrified that if they don’t put their hurt to the side and show their unwavering support, Meghan and Harry will cut them off just like they’ve done to Meghan’s father – and she knows that is Charles’ greatest fear.” The one thing Charles is grateful for is that the future of the monarchy remains intact. “The direct line of succession is unaltered,” says the source. “So at least in that respect it’s business as usual.”

Precious moments with baby Meghan.

s the furore rages over Harry and Meghan’s sudden exit, at least two royals have stuck to the motto “Keep calm and carry on” – and it’s paid off! Popularity polls show the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are riding a wave of public approval, and despite all the not-so-behind-the-scenes drama, William, 37, and Kate, 38, have kept waving the flag with an avalanche of appearances. The future King and Queen visited a curry house in Bradford to show off their milkshakemaking skills on January 15, and a few days later they were all smiles as they hosted a glamorous reception at Buckingham Palace. The hard-working duchess then embarked on a 24-hour whistlestop tour of the UK, which included popping into a science museum in Birmingham and visiting a women’s prison in Surrey. “They’ve stuck to the tried-andtested approach of promoting a united royal family and it’s been a success,” says royal expert Kate Nicholl. #

enée Zellweger’s career is on a high after winning a Golden Globe as well as Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice awards for her role in Judy, but behind the scenes things are a little more complicated!

The actress – who may win her fourth gong at the upcoming Academy Awards – is involved in a love triangle with former co-stars Tom Cruise and Colin Firth. Over the last year her relationship with Tom, 57, has reignited after the

man who “had me at hello” sent her a sweet note and gift to mark her 50th birthday in April. And a source reveals that Tom was Renée’s rock after her split in May from US musician Doyle Bramhall II, who she’d been seeing for seven years. “Renée even flew to the UK on several occasions when Tom was filming there to spend time with him and get away from the painful memories in Los Angeles,” tells a source. The unlucky-in-love star, who has previously dated Bradley Cooper and Jim Carrey, is also open to exploring Scientology with her Jerry Maguire co-star, with the insider claiming Renée

“even attended a meeting with him and his son Connor last year, excitedly telling friends how she was interested in continuing to learn about the religion back in LA”. The source adds, “Tom’s recently revealed he’s got feelings for her and is keen to help her fulfil her dream of becoming a mum. After years of fighting off the chemistry and love they both have for one another, he’s open to adopting a child with her.” Renée acknowledged their special bond in her acceptance speech for Best Actress at the SAG Awards last week, thanking him “for your example of professionalism on set and striving for excellence and generosity

he’s been everything from a professional dancer to a political party candidate. Now Breakfast co-host Hayley Holt is gearing up for her most important role yet – motherhood! The 39-year-old – who is 17 weeks’ pregnant – took fans by surprise last week when she revealed she was expecting her first child, saying, “I’m so happy because I have wanted this for a very, very, very long time and thought my time was running out – and it hasn’t. It’s happening!” The former champion snowboarder, who won the Woman’s Day TV Personality of the Year award in 2018, let viewers in on her secret by responding to feedback from a viewer, Terry, who wrote in to the show asking, “I’ve just tuned in and I’m wondering if I’ve missed a special announcement. Is Hayley pregnant? Or is it just today’s outfit? Her bust and belly look quite full.” With a smile, Hayley replied, “I am terribly offended. You know it’s Christmas and there’s a lot of Christmas puds and stuff. I’d get angry and send someone over to see you if … ah … in fact it wasn’t true. Because yes, Terry, I am pregnant!” In an interview with Woman’s Day in November last year, Hayley confided she was bored with talking about her relationship status, and the former Dancing with the Stars professional has been famously open about her desire for children, once saying she’d been “clucky for about 10 years”. In July 2018 she revealed that, aware of her biological clock, she’d visited a fertility specialist. “I looked

into freezing my eggs, but the cost and the statistics behind it, and the chance that it would turn into a baby, it felt a bit … scientific,” she said. “I just don’t want to do it with the wrong person. But having a baby by myself is an option as I get older.” For now, Hayley is remaining private about her private life – but it seems she has found the right person to make her baby dream come true. Hayley, who turns 40 in July, regularly visits a Maori spiritual healer and practises yoga and meditation, and after years of flatting, she moved into an apartment on her own last year. After sharing her exciting news on screen last week, her co-host John Campbell, gushed, “You are going to be a beautiful mum, a beautiful parent … What more can a baby want in life but to be as wanted as that baby?” Replied Hayley, “True! So wanted. By me and everyone around me.” #

or most parents, a baby’s ďŹ rst smile is a precious moment. But for broadcaster Janika ter Ellen and her rugby reporter husband Ross Karl, their sweet boy Eden’s gummy grins mean so much more after a turbulent start to life. While it’s blissfully calm at the family’s Auckland home now, Janika is refreshingly honest about the struggles that came with new parenthood. Feeding problems meant their wee boy was often unhappy and unsettled, and long days and nights were spent trying to get enough milk into him. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced,â€? tells the Newshub reporter and

Prime News weekend presenter. “That incredible force of love was always there, but I’d still spend entire days crying because I was so on edge. I was exhausted and overwhelmed. So it’s understandable then that the doting duo take such delight in making Eden smile now that they’re out the other side. “We must look ridiculous because we’re constantly singing, dancing and jumping around the room, but there really is nothing better than when he smiles, says Janika, 33. “It just melts our hearts. We’re so grateful to have a happy, healthy baby now.

Little Eden arrived on October 21 after a difďŹ cult pregnancy for Janika, who had to take more than a month off work due to severe morning sickness. And with her due date falling slap bang in the middle of the Rugby World Cup, the couple also had to contend with the fact Newshub journalist Ross, 37, was due to y to Japan for the ďŹ nal few weeks of her pregnancy. “As a rugby reporter, he’d been building up to it for four years, so it was important to both of us that he went,â€? Janika explains. The couple agreed Ross would go for the ďŹ rst few

weeks, return for Eden’s birth, then y back to Japan for the ďŹ nal games. “Looking back, that was a really stupid idea,â€? she laughs. “We’d been quite relaxed about it until the day he left and we were both a blubbing mess. I didn’t want him to go, he didn’t want to go ‌ it just felt all wrong.â€? Fortunately, Ross arrived home in plenty of time for the birth of his son. In fact, little Eden kept the couple waiting till a week after his October 15 due date, with contractions starting during the night of October 20. Janika laboured at home till the next afternoon, before heading to hospital

Meeting their adorable boy for the first time was emotional for Mum and Dad.

“I was a blur of pain,” she recalls. “I remember sayin to Ross, ‘Is this normal? It can’t possibly be meant to be like this!’” While Janika ha hoped for a natural birth, her labour stopped progressin and doctors decide that a Caesarean was the only optio “I was a little disap , but I was running out of steam and I just wanted to see him and know that he was OK,” she tells. The couple say they’ll never forget the moment their boy was born, with his loud screams reassuring them he was here and healthy. “I went over to say ‘hello’ and he was making the most primal noise I’d ever heard,” shares Ross, who starts a new role at Sky this month. “But as soon as I put my hand on him and said ‘hello’, he stopped crying. He looked me right in the eyes and we had this instant connection. I started crying because it was like, ‘Wow, that’s my son and I’m his dad, and here we are doing life together.’” Janika was similarly emotional. “I couldn’t move my arms on the operating table, so they put him up to my face and I just bawled and bawled, huge heaving sobs. I was so relieved and so grateful and so happy. He was perfect.”

They chose the name Eden simply because they like it – not because of Eden Park, as one friend thought it might be! And the decision to give him Janika’s last name was surprisingly simple. “There are hardly any ter Ellens left in New Zealand, and Janika really didn’t want it to die out,” says Ross, who was happy to have Karl represented as a middle name. “We talked about it a lot and mulled it over for a long time, and eventually we just thought, ‘Why not?’ I know I’m his dad and he’s my son – it really doesn’t matter whose last name he has.” The first hours and days of Eden’s life are still a bit of a blur for the new parents, with Janika losing a lot of blood and breastfeeding becoming increasingly difficult. On the third night in hospital, Janika remembers a midwife taking Eden away because he’d been screaming for hours, and asking if it would be OK to give him formula.

“I was like, ‘Yes, finally, someone please feed my baby!’ But another midwife came along and said ‘no’. Ross and I couldn’t believe it. We made such a fuss that eventually she agreed and after that Eden slept soundly for hours. It was amazing.” After returning home, Eden was still struggling to feed, and Janika was becoming more and more desperate. “Each time I had to breastfeed, it was miserable,” she admits. “It was agony and there just wasn’t enough milk for him.” With their baby barely sleeping – and not keen on going in a buggy or car seat either – the decision was quickly made that Ross wouldn’t go back to Japan. “It was like the apocalypse – he couldn’t leave,” recalls a panicked Janika. And unlike most Kiwis, Janika was delighted when the All Blacks were knocked out of the tournament after losing the semi-final to

England. “I love the All Blacks, but I was stoked,” she laughs. “It made it that much easier for Ross to stay home, and Mediaworks [his boss] was so understanding.” After seeing lactation consultants, Eden had a procedure to fix his tongue tie and his relieved parents say he’s now thriving on a combination of breast and bottle-feeding. The little one’s recently started to enjoy walks in the front pack, so Janika is loving getting out of the house again too! “It’s really fun hanging out with him now,” gushes Janika. “We’re loving it.” And she’s making the most of every precious moment with her boy before returning to work in March. Despite the challenges, there’s no doubt that Eden has brought new meaning to life for the couple, who wed in 2016. “The highs are higher than we ever could’ve imagined. We feel so incredibly lucky to have him,” tells Janika. #

It was attended by her adult sons, Brandon, 23, and Dylan, 22, and Jon’s ex-wife producer Christine ForsythPeters and their daughters Caleigh and Skye. he’s set to become one of Married at First Sight Australia’s most talked-about participants thanks to her big personality and no-holds-barred approach to life. And it’s clear nothing and nobody will faze incoming bride Hayley Vernon, who has lived a very colourful life in her 32 years. Speaking exclusively to Woman’s Day, a close pal of the brunette beauty tells all about the reality star’s debilitating drug habit and the circumstances that have shaped her life so far. One of Hayley’s closest friends, who has asked to remain anonymous, reveals the former financial broker is lucky to be alive. “We’re talking about someone who managed to survive an eight-year-long meth habit,” alleges the source. “This addiction saw her live in 15 houses over that period. Hayley got through some seriously dark situations thanks to her strong-mindedness. She’s been around the block, and I assure everyone, even a stint on Australia’s biggest TV show won’t be enough

to stop Hayley being herself.” The source adds, “After surviving some pretty awful stuff over the years, she is making the most of a second chance at life – she’s bubbly, outspoken, enthusiastic about everything and totally uncensored in what she says.” It’s a far cry from Hayley’s life as a teenager. At 16, the impressionable teen started smoking marijuana, a habit that within a year had morphed into extensive methamphetamine use. “This was unacceptable to her single mum, who promptly kicked her out of home,” her friend claims. “It was a really tough time for her. Her mum was dealing with mental illness, so Hayley was trying to look out for her little sister from afar, and at roughly the same time, a close family friend died. Her world just imploded!” According to her pal, the pressure pushed Hayley into more serious drugs, particularly meth.

“She used it initially to numb her emotions, but then it became something she couldn’t control,” says the pal. “A few of us tried to get her away from it over the years, but she was a highfunctioning addict who seemed to be holding it together.” At one of Hayley’s lowest periods, one of her bosses agreed to pay for her rehab. “She made good money in finance, where she had the gift of the gab, but she was always off her tree,” alleges the friend, who insists the vivacious contestant was forced to live in shared accommodation with strangers. Despite holding down good jobs, Hayley’s bank account was always empty, because her $800-a-week habit was sucking her dry. “At one point, she was stealing clothing and food, and selling them to other addicts and with the money she made, she would eat.”

She is making the most of a second chance at life

According to the friend, this worked for a while “until it didn’t”, at which point the former account executive suffered a complete breakdown. Thankfully for Hayley, a group of women in the fitness industry turned her life around. She befriended a trainer, who set her on the path to a healthier lifestyle. The pal now asserts, “Hayley has been drug-free for several years now and I’m really proud that she was able to dig herself out of the really deep hole.” #

hen it comes to actors working in Hollywood today, it’s hard to find someone more successful or respected than Robert Downey Jr. “Everyone who spends time with Robert loves him,” a source says of the Iron Man star, 54. “He’s just an all-round great guy.” And it’s a far cry from the man he used to be. “Robert doesn’t talk about it often, but he’s been through a lot over the course of his life. He battled a decades-long drug addiction, has faced multiple arrests and even spent time behind bars,” tells the source, adding that the Dolittle star has told friends he knows how lucky he is to be alive. “For many years, people feared the worst. But Robert defied the odds and managed to have one of the greatest comebacks of all time.” Born to filmmaker Robert Downey Sr and the late actress Elsie Downey, Robert grew up in New York City surrounded by the dark side of fame. “He was only six or seven years old when his dad gave

him his first joint,” says the source, noting that Robert soon began getting high with his father more frequently. As he got older, Robert’s substance abuse intensified. “He began using harder drugs, like heroin and ecstasy,” claims the source. Robert’s inner circle – including then-girlfriend Sarah Jessica Parker – desperately tried to steer him in the right direction, but it was no use. “I was so selfish,” admitted Robert. “I liked to drink and I had a drug problem, and that didn’t jibe with Sarah Jessica because it’s the furthest thing from what she is.” Sarah and Robert eventually called time on their eight-year romance in 1991 – and he went on to marry actresssinger Deborah Falconer, 54, a year later. By late 1993, they welcomed son Indio together. “Everyone had high hopes that fatherhood would change Robert for the better,” says the showbiz insider. “But sadly, that wasn’t the case.” In June 1996, the star was arrested for possession of

heroin, cocaine and a pistol. Two weeks later, Robert was back in police custody after stumbling into a neighbour’s home while under the influence. He was placed on probation and ordered to attend treatment programmes. Over the next few years the actor continued to find himself in trouble with the law, most of the time for violating the terms of his probation. It all came to a head in 1999, when a judge ordered Robert to spend three years behind bars. “While there, he got into more fights than he could count,” says the source. “He got picked on because he was a celebrity. It was truly awful in there.” Robert was released after serving just one year and quickly went back to his old ways. However, in 2001, after his final arrest – which reportedly resulted in Deborah leaving him and taking Indio, now 26, with her – the actor woke up. “I said, ‘I don’t think I can continue doing this.’ I reached out for help and I ran with it,” shared Robert, who’s been sober since 2003. As he started to work on himself, Robert’s life began to change for the better. In 2003, he landed a role in the supernatural thriller Gothika, opposite Halle Berry. “At the time, people were afraid to take a chance on

Robert. His troubled past was a concern,” explains the confidante. “He was so desperate to get back into acting that he agreed to take some of his pay after the movie wrapped.” It proved to be a genius move. Not only did it restart Robert’s acting career, but it also led him to his now-wife Susan, 46, who was working as a producer on the film. “She made it clear to Robert that she wouldn’t tolerate drugs or drinking and he actually listened,” the source continues. “She gave the tough love he needed.”

Super success

In the years that followed, Robert continued to thrive. After marrying Susan he landed parts in the 2005 drama Good Night, and Good Luck and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Zodiac in 2007 before nabbing his biggest role to date, in 2008’s Iron Man.

OBER TING “The film changed his life forever,” the source says of Robert, who went on to play the superhero in nine more Marvel films and amass a net worth of close to $600 million. But, “the thing that makes Robert happiest is being a father,” the source says of the actor, who shares son Exton, seven, and daughter Avri, five, with Susan. “He loves nothing more than spending Sunday mornings in the kitchen with his wife and kids, cooking waffles and joking around.” And he doesn’t take one single second of it for granted. “Robert knows how lucky he is,” says the insider. “He was terrified of becoming another Hollywood has-been and wanted to prove to his friends, family and most of all, himself, that he was worthy of a second chance. He’ll be forever grateful that he got one.” #

In 1992, his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin brought audiences to tears – and earned him his first Academy Award nomination.

After his first wife left him, Robert “reached out for help and I ran with it”, which led to his eventual career revival.

I knew I was blessed to be marrying the love of my life with our newborn baby with us. It was meant to be.” The flight attendant shed many tears – of joy and sadness – during the ceremony as Vaha was supposed to be giving birth to triplets but earlier in her pregnancy she lost two of her babies, making tiny Ofeina a true miracle. “During my first scan at seven weeks, I looked at the screen and saw one heartbeat,” she tells. “Then I was told that there were two more heartbeats. I was going to be a mother of triplets!” Sadly, by the time Vaha went for her next scan at 16 weeks, she was devastated to

She eventually suffered a miscarriage and carried only one baby to full-term. “It was great that our daughter could be at our wedding, but there was also sadness that our twins were not with us,” Vaha shares. “This made me realise how lucky we are to be parents. Our daughter is a blessing.” Vaha and Tai, who met five years ago at their Auckland church, found out they were pregnant in April last year. They scheduled their wedding for December 21 and planned the birth for October – the triplets were going to be three months premature, which is common for multiple births. Organising a huge wedding for 350 guests required early booking of caterers and venues, and thousands of dollars in non-refundable deposits. After the devastating loss of the twins, an early birth wasn’t required and Vaha’s due date changed – to the same day of her wedding! “We had to make a tough

decision,” tells Vaha. “We couldn’t get our deposits back, so we decided to go ahead with the wedding.” But it was touch and go. Vaha prayed that she’d give birth before the ceremony because her worst fear was having her waters break while walking down the aisle. Three days ahead of the wedding, her contractions started and one day before saying “I do” she was admitted to the maternity ward at Middlemore Hospital. “The hospital staff knew I had my wedding to attend, so we were all praying that baby would arrive that day.” Sure enough, at 7pm on December 20, Vaha gave birth to a beautiful and healthy girl, weighing 3.4kg. She was exhausted and lost about four litres of blood, due to her complicated pregnancy. Husband-to-be Tai was by her side, prepared to call the wedding off so his fiancée could rest. “Vaha’s wellbeing was more important,” asserts

A last-minute appointment with her seamstress was all that was needed, as Vaha’s wedding dress was originally fitted while she was nine months’ pregnant. Seeing the challenges

Real life Doting parents Emma and Wayne know life with their boy is precious.

Dementia heartbreak

FORGOT WHO I WA Mum Emma’s worst nightmare came true when her little boy received a diagnosis

E

mma Siddal thought there was something not quite right as she watched her toddler son Harley playing in the park. While the other kids happily played on the slides and swings, Harley was tearing around, acting more boisterous than usual. Most parents would have put it down to his age, or just seen a young boy with plenty of energy to burn. But there were other things too. Lately, Harley was always

38

getting sick with colds and infections. He had a constant runny nose and his speech, rather than improving, began to deteriorate. Emma and her husband Wayne Bond, 47, were beside themselves with worry, having no idea what was going on. Then when Harley turned three, the family was hit with devastating news – their little boy had a rare condition called Sanfilippo syndrome, otherwise known as childhood dementia. Worst of all, it was

life-limiting, with sufferers only expected to live between 10 and 20 years of age – and there was no cure. For Emma and Wayne, the future they’d been looking forward to for their son evaporated in an instant. Each birthday that passed wouldn’t just be a celebration – it would be a time to wonder how many more precious years they would have left together as a family. Stoically, they vowed to make every second count, but it wasn’t easy. Harley developed sleep apnoea, where he would momentarily stop breathing during the night, and he began to forget simple things like knowing how to use the toilet or what was food and what was not. He would try to eat

plants, bushes and rocks. “Harley was getting to a point where he couldn’t even recognise Wayne and I,” recalls Emma, 38. “He stopped calling us ‘Mummy’ and ‘Daddy’.”

New trial

The English couple from Sheffield were devastated. Yet hope was on the horizon. Hearing of Harley’s diagnosis, medics from Great Ormond Street Hospital in London contacted the distraught parents, suggesting their son take part in experimental treatment. “The hospital spoke to us and let us know about this new trial, but they told us they would need to study him for a year to assess his memory,” explains Emma. It was a long time to wait

BACK ON TRACK

LIFE-CHANGING OPERATION

Harley has improved in leaps and bounds.

A device was implanted in the little boy’s brain.

and little Harley’s memory continued to deteriorate. “The whole thing was soul-destroying,” shares Emma. “There were months when he couldn’t recognise us, and it was heartbreaking. He even struggled to make eye contact with us.” Thankfully, by the end of the assessment period, the family received good news. “His memory was good enough to be able to get onto the trial – he could remember enough of what he was told to show there was hope,” says an exuberant Emma. The trial involved a device being implanted into Harley’s head, releasing a synthetic version of the enzyme he was missing directly into his brain. The enzyme would

‘ wash away the sugar build-up that was causing the neurons in his brain to die. Following the treatment, Harley’s memory gradually improved to the point where he was able to utter those precious words that his parents had feared he might never say again – ‘Mummy’ and ‘Daddy’. Seeing the look of recognition and love dawn on their young son’s face as he looked up at them filled Emma and Wayne with a hope they thought had been lost to them forever. Sadly, the reality is that despite his progress, Harley will never fully recover. “He has good and bad days with the clinical trial he’s on,”

There were months when he couldn’t recognise us

tells Emma. “But at the end of the day, this condition is naturally supposed to just get worse and worse – the trial is a treatment, not a cure.”

Reaching out

Despite everything, Emma and Wayne are determined to stay positive, and are in awe of how their brave little boy is battling on. “When you watch him go through all of this, he seems invincible – he rarely complains,” says Emma. “He’s such a strong boy and we are so proud of everything he is achieving. And he seems to be improving slightly in some cases.” Although Sanfilippo

syndrome is rare, affecting one in every 70,000 children, Emma can’t help but think of the others suffering with this condition. “It’s awful knowing that other children like Harley may get to a point where they can’t even recognise their own parents,” she says. “We’re hoping by sharing his story, and the success behind the pioneering clinical trial, other parents with children like Harley might feel some hope the same way we do with our little boy. “We realise it won’t cure him, but it means everything to be able to make more cherished memories with our beautiful son.” #

The pair fully embraced life in the military and also the sporting opportunities it presented, with Ryan playing basketball and Tomina softball. However, Ryan’s world turned upside down following the terminal diagnosis. Prior to this, the 1.91m-tall soldier had noticed a knot had formed in his calf. He dismissed the issue as a minor problem, but then following a 15km pack march two years ago, the pain in his calf became so acute, he sought medical advice. An ultrasound and later an MRI scan hinted at the possibility of a tumour. A biopsy later confirmed he had soft tissue sarcoma cancer – a form of the disease more common in younger adults. Within a week, a CT scan discovered the cancer cells had spread to his lungs and that it was terminal. “I took it on the chin at first,” he recalls. “It was only a little later when I cracked. I was having a few drinks with the boys when I broke down and told them the news.” Tomina was flown home

hether it’s part of your New Year’s resolution or that last bit of festive season bulk just won’t budge, these 10 simple steps, courtesy of celebrity trainer James Duigan – who boasts star clients like Elle and Emilia Clarke – will have you five kilos slimmer in just two weeks.

GO GREEN

Eating a ton of green leafy vegetables provides your body with fibre, which helps eliminate toxins and reduces “bingo arms”, says James.

ILOS IN 2 WEEKS! on’strainershares10 simpletipstoreachingyourgoal BOOZE BAN

It can prove tricky to cut down on alcohol in the summer months when you want to enjoy a wine with friends, but James suggests limiting yourself to four standard drinks a week. One 95-calorie glass of wine replaces one snack!

CUT BACK ON COFFEE

You can have one morning coffee and from then on drink green tea if you need a hot drink. Several studies have suggested that the flavonoids and caffeine in green tea can boost metabolism, among other health benefits. As little as 2½ cups a day can help support weight loss.

LIMIT CARBS

Our bodies convert wheat

to sugar faster than any other grain, which means potential weight gain. There are alternatives out there: try some courgette noodles instead of regular pasta (see recipe).

DON’T GO LOW-FAT

Low-fat products like salad dressings and yoghurt actually contain far more sugar and sodium than their regular counterparts to make up for the lack of flavour. But eat anything full fat – including butter, milk and cheese – in small portions.

WARM YOUR WATER

TURMERIC

Start sprinkling more turmeric into your cooking. The spice is known for its anti-inflammatory effects in the body’s fat cells. It can also improve symptoms of arthritis and autoimmune issues.

KITCHEN CLOSED

Make sure you stop eating by 9pm every night so you can let your body properly digest. If you can, maybe even try intermittent fasting, whereby you restrict your eating to a nine-hour window each day as a way to help

boost your metabolic rate and encourage weight loss due to your reduced intake of calories.

DOWNSIZE TABLEWARE

If your dinner plate is 30cm wide, swap to something around 25cm. It’s only a small amount, but by making this change, you’re filling your plate with less and saving around 500 calories.

LIQUID LUNCH Eating soup for one meal a day can help keep your calorie count down. Just make sure it’s packed with vegetables and wholegrains, not cream!

Get back to your best for the year ahead

Exposing our skin to New Zealand’s harsh summer sun not only increases our risk of melanoma, but also leads to sun spots, premature ageing and a dull complexion. Get into the habit of wearing sunblock every single day of the year – and in summer, apply it several times throughout the day. Never leave the house without a widebrimmed hat and avoid exposure in the middle of the day. Give your skin a moisture hit at night with a facial oil, such as rosehip.

Ditch the drink

Consider going alcoholfree for a month to give your body a chance to catch up after the indulgence of the silly season. Daily drinking puts a major strain on our internal organs, not to mention our skin, sleep and mental health. Your skin will be noticeably brighter after a few weeks of better sleep and a healthier lifestyle, plus you’ll feel refreshed and ready to tackle the year ahead.

60

Woman’s Day

A

s the summer holiday season draws to a close, your hair and skin might be feeling the effects of all that sun, salt and occasional overindulgence! But as we get back into routine, now’s the perfect time to give our complexions and locks a little bit of love. The key word here is moisture – our bodies are often in desperate need of extra hydration at this time of year, so follow these tips to get your glow back.

TREAT YOUR TRESSES Swimming in salt and chlorine can strip your hair of its moisture and even change its colour, particularly for blondes. Try an intensive keratin treatment to bring your locks back to their best, and always rinse your hair in fresh water after a dip.

Experts recommend adults drink six to eight glasses of water a day for optimal health – and more if you’re exercising or in the heat. Not only will you feel more energised with adequate hydration, but your skin and hair will thank you for it too.

hi up Chin

It’s natural to feel a little glum as the holidays draw to a close, but keep your spirits up with a gratitude exercise. In a notebook, write down all the happy memories from your break and express your gratitude for all the positives. I suggest planning your next break or holiday. It’s easier to be positive when we have something to look forward to.

reasons to love

Nadine Higgins finds monumental appeal in this US gem

W

ith wide, neatly manicured avenues bearing names like Independence and Constitution, as well as memorials at every turn, Washington DC wears its political and historical significance on its sleeve. And it wears it so well – just one of the many reasons to love America’s capital.

PICTURES: GETTY IMAGES, NADINE HIGGINS.

1

Soak up the history

Stand in the spot where Martin Luther King gave his famous “I have a dream” speech, read Abraham Lincoln’s words as you’re dwarfed at his statue’s feet, or for a bit of pop-culture history, find the spot where Forrest Gump and Jenny are reunited at the Reflecting Pool alongside the Washington monument. Washington DC commemorates history very well and the National Mall – which runs from the Potomac River to Capitol Hill – is full of things to see and do. On day one we racked up 24km and a few blisters trying to take it all in, before we discovered the bikes for hire!

2

Museum yourself silly

You could spend weeks in Washington DC without ever seeing the light of day, thanks to the many incredible museums on offer. Being a news nerd, the highlight for me was the

Newseum, a museum that has a section of the first amendment that protects the freedom of the press inscribed on its front façade, several stories tall. It’s overwhelmingly comprehensive, covering seven floors. An exhibition of all the Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs since 1942 is like the World Press Photo exhibition on steroids and is deeply affecting.

3

Get political

DC is inescapably political and I love it. A stop at the White House was a little disappointing as they’re replacing the fence, but our tour of Capitol Hill was much more rewarding. The ceiling of the rotunda is reminiscent of the Sistine Chapel, with George Washington elevated to god-like status. There are large statues of suffragettes, political leaders and even the guy who invented air conditioning. We took the tunnel to the beautiful Senate Library, where you can also visit Jefferson’s Library, complete with leather-bound volumes on everything from beekeeping to physics. The art outside Mama Ayesha’s Restaurant in the neighbourhood of Adams Morgan isn’t as highbrow, but it’s still worth a visit for the food as well as the mural of its immigrant founder with every president since 1960 – except the current one.

Cute suburbs National Mall is very

beautiful, but there’s plenty of charm to be found outside of the central city. Logan Circle is a historic neighbourhood of three-storey late Victorian-era houses that are a dream to wander around. Similarly, Adams Morgan has street after leafy street of towering houses that have me wandering around with my neck craned upward. A trip upriver lead us to Georgetown, but sadly left no time for a trip to Old Town Alexandria across the river.

The dome of Capito rotunda features a fa l Hill’s scin fresco painted in 18 ating 65.

Pause to reflect

We did make it across the river, however, to Arlington National Cemetery. It’s not an easy place to be when it’s hot as there’s little shelter from the sun, except in the road trains that snake around the roughly 400,000 graves of those lost at war. I didn’t expect it to be such a tourist trap and if I were to offer you a tip: do not get on that train. Instead, simply walk up to the spot where JFK and Jackie Kennedy-Onassis are buried and pause to consider the terrible cost of war as you look back across the river and marvel at the view of the capital.

nd I loved wandering arou rb bu su fy lea ul the beautif of Adams Morgan.

Sitting at 30m tall, the Lincoln Memorial looks down on the Reflecting Po ol.

ONE MORE THING TO LOVE ... Keen to discover Washington DC C for yourself? Air New Zealand flies to Chicago three to five times a week and will fly direct to New York from October 29, 2020. These two cities are fantastic gateways to the USA!

A date with Sarah-Kate

S

ALL FIRED UP Sarah-Kate’s making changes for the Greta good

omething tells me that 2020 is going to be the year of heightened climate debate. I’m all for it as long as everyone agrees with me, and most of the younger generation, that the planet is in crisis and it’s our fault and we need to fix it. Yep, I’m team Greta Thunberg all the way. Jeremy Clarkson on the other hand … When the gobby Top Gear goon suggested recently that Australia was burning because God didn’t want anyone to live there and they should come to the UK instead, I wanted to find out his address and publish it along with an open invitation.“Hey, Australia, party on at Clarkson’s – for the rest of your life! Drink rosé and punch people until the end of time!”

The bushfires across the Tasman have broken my heart. It’s not the same at all, I know, but I remember my anguish a year or so ago when our dog was very sick and I couldn’t be at home because our house was being renovated. Until then, I’d never considered myself a homebody. I usually like being somewhere else! But I’ve lived here longer than I’ve lived anywhere else in my whole life. It’s where I want to be when times are tough. And eventually, I got there, even if it was without the dog. Now how my heart bleeds for all those Australians whose homes have been wiped out by fire. And don’t get me started on the animals. There are many ways to donate money, which is what is needed to help the fire

fighters and the homeless and the wildlife. We might battle our Aussie mates on the sports fields, but they’re our closest neighbours and their pain is our pain. Screw you, Jeremy Clarkson. But hating on knob-ends like him doesn’t get you far either. Yet the bigger issue of climate change and what we can do about that is a minefield because the problem is so huge and the solution so unknowable. Plus once you start deep diving, it gets very depressing. Being a vegan might reduce greenhouse gas emissions but it means not eating cheese. Or eggs. Or chicken. Or having milk. Or yoghurt. I already don’t eat red meat, but I still have so far to go. And it feels exhausting.

Guilt over cling wrap? I have it. Worry about recycling? Yep, that too. Wanting to fly away somewhere sunny this winter? Oh dear. At this rate I may as well buy myself a hutch and start transitioning into a rabbit. But maybe, just like dieting, it’s better in the long run (assuming we’re going to get one, which I think we all should) to adopt a healthy eating plan than it is to starve yourself. As a friend once said to me when I was lamenting my inability to stick to an alcohol-free month: “It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being better.” If we all do what we can, it will add up to something good. As for cling wrap, half the time it doesn’t even cling. I’m moving on to the reusable Kiwi beeswax stuff.

Kate’s home truths

I

need to go into therapy for addiction. Dog addiction, that is. Is that even a thing? It is in my world anyway. I’m addicted to my dog. When she was a tiny puppy, I felt all protective and mother hen about her, but as she grew, I thought (stupidly) that I’d chill a bit, that I’d be less protective and clingy around her, but in fact my addiction only got worse. To explain just how bad my addiction got, I have to confess that we didn’t travel overseas for a whole year. Not even a domestic trip. I couldn’t bear to leave her. We told ourselves that we were just doing our bit to save the planet, conserve the carbon footprint, cut down on air miles etc – but the truth is

66

Woman’s Day

well, the truth’s more fluffy than that. The truth is a white ball of fluff had stolen our hearts and I for one couldn’t let go. Until New Year’s Eve. My husband announced – after a slew of teenagers turning up pre and post-music festivals using our quiet country hideaway as a party pad – that picking up beer bottles off the lawn was not how he saw his summer holidays unfolding. He planned a secret escape and surprised us with tickets to Singapore, flying out New Year’s Eve. As lovely as this was of him, I went into blind panic. “But … the … dog…” I stammered, trying not to sound ungrateful. My sister-in-law had recently enlisted the help of a dog trainer who was whipping

her three dogs into shape and I wondered if he also did pet-sitting. He did! Was he available at short notice? He was! Would he cuddle her and treat her like the queen she was? “She’s a dog,” he told me. “Sshhhh!” I told him. “Do not let her hear that. She thinks she’s human. She sleeps in our bed, are you cool with that?” He looked at me blankly. “No, she will sleep in a basket on the floor.” My heart sank. Could I go through with this? “Get a grip, Mum,” my daughter said to me, eagerly packing her things for Singapore. “OK,” I sighed. “I can do this.” I packed up her things, wrote a two-page list of

instructions (then condensed it to one page with small font to avoid looking too crazy), packed her toy, blanket, bowls, food, lead, chews … basically enough stuff for a year even though it’d only be a few days. When I arrived at the dog trainer’s place, I saw his fancy kennels and the dogs he was training – acting dogs for movies, police dogs, he was even training a goat! “She will stay in the house with us,” he reassured me as I glanced around nervously at the huge dogs. As we boarded the plane, he sent me a picture of her looking, I have to say, happy. But being away from her was a stretch for me. We came home early. “I miss her so much,” I told my eye-rolling husband.

Advice

ASK POLLY Get advice from fast-talking Rova and More FM star Polly Gillespie Pollyism of the week aking a New Year’s resolution has always seemed really stupid to me. I’m just not very good at sticking to things. Mind you, I have stuck to the same career or versions of it for years, and I did stick to loads of diets, especially when I had no money, but to make a New Year’s resolution takes thought and consideration. That is why now at nearly the end of the first month of 2020 I have no real resolutions. I always fall back on: 1. Go to the gym. 2. Make sure you go to the gym. 3. If you stop going to the gym, then don’t forget to cancel the membership. 4. Next year, don’t join a gym. I did hear someone say that instead of choosing a resolution, one should choose a theme for the year. I like that. Theme has wiggle room and creative licence. My theme could be “Do up the house”, but to do that I need another theme: “Find a single builder who adores me and wants to help renovate my house.” That sounds hard. So instead of a theme that would take dating, bribing, coercing and maybe even compromising, I have chosen the theme “Thrifty”. Until this very moment this year, I have not been thrifty. I’ve tried a bit, but those EziBuy catalogues just come out far too often. Well, from this point forward I shall be thrifty. Unless the conditions are blizzard-like, I will hang my washing outside instead of

PICTURE: GETTY IMAGES.

M

using the dryer. I won’t go to the supermarket and buy days and days’ worth of food only to find myself chucking stuff out that starts to smell ... well ... dead. I shall freeze food, grow my own herbs and have things repaired instead of buying new stuff. I will do my utmost to finally remember to take my recyclable bags to the store instead of buying more and more recyclable bags until the whole pantry is full to the brim with recyclable bags. Why am I missing the thrifty gene? It’s not like I grew up rich. I come from a family that needed to be thrifty, but I clearly remember my sister “Very Thrifty Gillespie” constantly bailing me out of debt at college. And even more clearly I remember getting my first credit card and maxing it out within minutes, not understanding I’d need to actually pay for stuff. Like the plastic card wasn’t a magic licence to print money. Who knew? I wasn’t born thrifty, but by George this year I’ll medal in it. I’ll stand there at the end of the race on December 31, 2020, and I’ll be hoisted up on to the podium. Yes, I’ll be hoisted up wearing second-hand jeans and a hand-knitted sweater. Or maybe I’ll just find myself a nice hot builder and renovate my house. One can’t rush into these things now ...

Any tips on helping young teens make new friends? My 13-year-old daughter is struggling and I don’t know what to suggest. She is not particularly sporty, so a team sport is not necessarily the answer. ● Sad Mum, Hamilton

Q

Oh, darling, it’s our biggest concern, huh? Gosh, I remember hiding behind a tree outside my son’s school just to make sure he was playing with kids at lunch time. He wasn’t. He was in the library studying, but the thing is, he was happy. Your daughter is at a tricky age. Thirteen is bloody beastly, but they’re all going through it, and although some kids may appear to be flourishing and popular, 13 is a horror movie of an age. Give her lots of love and laughs, and just encourage her to join any groups at school that vaguely interest her. Oh, and don’t hide behind trees!

A

I have a sister who is a habitual liar. These take many forms and range from irritating to hilariously absurd. She dabbles in art and for a Christmas gift gave me a painting. She’s told me about how she painted it and

Q

what products she used. However, it is obvious that it’s a cheap print. I even had three gallery staff confirm this, although I could see the pixels myself. My question is: what to do with it? It upset me that she lied about something like this. ● Porky’s Sis, via email There’s not a lot you can do except smile. Lying like this, when it’s completely unnecessary and clearly a lie, is a condition. Nobody wants to tell such crazy lies that people look at them like they’re nuts. Nobody needs to lie about a painting. Lies are for affairs and fraud, and saving someone from hurt feelings. Your sister has a psychological condition. Now, you could discuss that with her, and she could say she’s seeing a therapist, but chances are she’d be lying! Smile. Just smile. I know it’s weird. I understand.

Who am I? I was born in London in 1986. Dad was an actor and Mum was a film producer, but they divorced when I was three. Growing up, there wasn’t a lot of discipline in my life, and I hated it being imposed at school, but I loved being in front of a crowd, either playing sport or on stage. In 1998, my sister and I appeared in Elizabeth, with Cate Blanchett. While my sister decided to concentrate on music, over the next decade I had small parts in films including Atonement and The Other Boleyn Girl, but I was best known for being a regular on London’s party scene, which led my sister to write a hit song about me being a good-for-nothing. After time out snowboarding in Canada, I pulled myself together and started to take acting seriously and, in 2011, I got my break when I was cast in Game of Thrones. The show made me an international star and led to parts in Hollywood movies, including John Wick and The Predator. Now a father to a baby daughter with my ex-partner, I’m enjoying a more settled life in Los Angeles. With my latest movie, Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, earning me praise, who am I? I’m on Team Harry! Like editor Sido, I was shocked to hear Prince Harry was turning his back on his royal duties. But each of us, royal or not, only has one life. Harry has been through so much, losing his beloved mother when he was still a child and growing up in the spotlight of the international media. It doesn’t surprise me that Harry wants a happy marriage and for his children to have a normal childhood. That seems pretty hard to achieve when royal duties involve so much time away from family. I would hate for Harry to ďŹ nish up with a life like Prince Charles, who has spent his whole life waiting to fulďŹ l his destiny. âœŚ “Longtime readerâ€?, Palmerston North

Astrology

Your STARS

Your heavenly destiny for the week January 27-February 2 Pisces

FEB 20 – MAR 20

Slow down and regain your balance, then look for ways to make your life run more smoothly. A new appliance might be money well spent, along with better storage systems or home-delivered meals. This weekend could bring a pampering session or a feel-good social event.

Gemini

MAY 22 – JUN 21 There’s certainly no danger of you gathering moss this month! With movement swirling through your chart, seize the chance to travel or plan an adventurous day out. Alternatively, start looking into workshops or short courses, particularly if you’ve fallen into a rut.

Libra

PICTURES: GETTY IMAGES.

SEP 24 – OCT 23 Been lolling in the hammock too long? Life may become more active over the coming weeks, and a shot of adrenaline is just what you need. Think fitness kicks, home overhauls or sporting events. Adding to the whirl, Friday’s lovestruck stars might rev up a romance you’ve given up on, so start your engines!

With Venus amping up your style and charm, your efforts won’t go unnoticed, particularly if you’re looking for romance – or a promotion at work. If you’ve been feeling below par of late, why not delve into yoga or tai chi, or simply spend more time around nature?

Cancer JUN 22 – JUL 23

Your touch is golden this month, so start exploring a few moneymaking ideas, or look for ways to trim expenses. As thoughts turn to the future, try broaching a topic you’ve been avoiding. For couples, an overdue heart-to-heart might ease the tension – along with a feel-good film or concert.

Aries

MAR 21 – APR 20 As summer winds down, your social life might hit fever pitch. Adding to the busyness, a work-related project could really gain momentum or a personal goal looks to come within reach. Harness Friday’s stars to push things along, then prepare for an indulgent weekend. But don’t make any promises.

Leo

JUL 24 – AUG 23 With the sun heating up your social sector, you’re in demand. Those networking skills could open doors at work, while on the relationship front, your fun-loving side should work a treat. By the weekend, you could hit party-planning mode – just don’t under-cater.

Scorpio

Sagittarius

OCT 24 – NOV 22

NOV 23 – DEC 22

Dust off some precious photos, revisit a few forgotten recipes or rekindle a pastime you used to love. As your senses become attuned, it’s important to surround yourself with beautiful sounds, smells and objects. Thought about joining a book club? Now’s the time!

Midweek news might get you excited on the work front, or a lucky break could be perfectly timed. Local clubs, kids’ activities and family events may keep you busy, but factor in some downtime too. At home, calm the vibe with chilled-out music or an oil burner. A new picnic set should come in handy!

Taurus

APR 21 – MAY 21 Taureans tend to play it safe, but with Uranus shaking things up, that might prove tricky. Business ventures, exotic holidays ... the cosmos has you thinking big. If your head’s spinning, fresh air should be a calming elixir – a picnic or nature walk could do the trick.

Virgo

AUG 24 – SEP 23 Your daily habits are primed for an overhaul, so whether it’s improving your efficiency, exercise levels or eating patterns, do it. February’s busy stars should prove productive on multiple fronts – as your love sphere lights up, you may even find romance in the mix, which could take you by surprise!

Capricorn DEC 23 - JAN 20

For many, a love match will deepen through late summer, but in the more immediate term, this week looks wonderfully indulgent. Saturday could point you towards fine foods or beautiful places, while Sunday’s earthy moon might propel you into the great outdoors.

I i ttakes Irina k us b back k tto 1990 with an homage to Madonna’s iconic look by Jean Paul.

After a whopping 50 years in the fashion industry, Jean Paul Gaultier has taken h his final bow. In a spectacular show last week at the Théâtre d du Châtelet in Paris, the rich and famous gathered tto watch Bella, 23, and Gigi Hadid, 24, Dita von T Teese, 47, and Paris Jackson, 21, strut the catwalk iin the 67-year-old’s designs. Jean Paul, who has d dressed stars including Nicole Kidman, Rihanna a and Madonna, announced two weeks ago that tthis runway would be his last. “It’s going to be quite a party with many of m my friends, and we’re going to have fun until v very, very late,” he said. But while he’s leaving the world of haute couture, don’t expect this to be the last we see of him – word has it he’s going to shift his focus to “his high-end fashion and perfume business”.
