From the Leadership

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The year is quickly flying by and we’re already through the first semester of 2019! It’s been a busy time with events such as Open Day and the Student-led Conference, as well as excursions, concerts, sports days, and NAPLAN. We are also progressing multiple projects on the College grounds. Work has just begun on an upgrade to the Learning Hub (Library). The facility will be expanded to include an enclosed lecture theatre and will feature two additional learning spaces. The learning spaces, which can be divided or enlarged by the use of an operable wall will provide a suitable area for both individual and collaborative learning. This project is anticipated to be completed by the second week of September. Our Ring Road project is also progressing, with the aim to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce risk to students being dropped off or collected. The Ring Road will have a minor Primary set down area on the existing road near

the Primary ovals. There will also be a covered bus set down and pick up area close to Phil McLaren Oval. There will be one way traffic with an electronic boom gate to increase security and ensure the safety of our students during high traffic periods. And finally, an undercover seating area for Solid Grounds will be completed by mid-September which will provide a suitable outdoor area for many of our activities. I’m excited to see these significant projects, that will enhance our College communit y, come to fruition. Trevor Norman Principal

Alumni News

REBECCA EDMONDS - GRADUATED 2004 I started at CCC as a foundation student in preschool with the amazing Jo Schumack and I graduated in 2004. I have many memories of my time at this school, in three different locations - Christian Family, Kidgell Street and where it is now. While there are so many that could be mentioned, one of my favourite memories would be being carried across the stage dressed as a little sheep in ‘We Like Sheep’, on our Principal’s shoulders. If any one remembers how small I was (and still short!) and how tall Mark Hodges was – they would understand.

us as friends and family at the table. With my husband Trent, it was an adventure to move back home to the Mary Valley and embark on our café, Kandanga Kitchen where we get to work directly with farmers and offer an ever changing delicious menu. Our shop kelpie, Flick, must also get a mention – as people take just as many photos of her, as they do our food! This is where Meg Owen comes in. Spending our whole school life together at CCC, we remain very close friends. Meg is an accomplished chef having worked in high end restaurants in Sydney and Brisbane. When it turned out she had returned to Gympie around the same time we were planning the café – we snapped her up as our chef! Her skills and versatility are so fun to work with when planning the menu.

“It was an adventure to move back home to the Mary Valley and embark on our caf é , Kandanga Kitchen.”

Of course time moved on from school musicals unfortunately, I graduated and moved to Brisbane to study. 12 years in Brisbane gave me the opportunity to work in some fantastic roles in State Government and the Not-for-profit sectors in project management, but also travel.

I have a love for the community and the environment, along with a passion for food - how it is grown with good stewardship of land and animals, and how it connects

It is a privilege to cater for SHINE*, and it is fantastic to see how much the school has grown and be a part of this community.

*SHINE is a women’s conference organised by Gympie Church of Christ and held at the College in August*

Events & Activities

On Friday 24th June, we welcomed prospective families and our CCC community to take part in our annual celebration. The Under 8’s area was the place to be with many fun and interactive activities. There were those that were brave enough to handle one of the slithery, scaly snakes at the Reptile exhibit. The P & F provided a free sausage sizzle and the fairy floss was a crowd pleaser. It was a great community event. Thank you to everyone who attended and spent the afternoon with us.. \

UNDER 8’S Under 8’s week is all about celebrating the unique phase of development, learning and growth that children go through in the ‘early years’. Our Under 8’s area at Open Day was a hub of play, exploration and fun! Many students conquered their apprehension and fear by getting up close or holding a snake or a lizard. Under the tents, children from the ELC and our school community played with small world themed sensory boxes with various reptiles, farm toys and playdough or made their own pet glitter snake to take home. Students also enjoyed cuddling up with a cushion to read a book with a Year 6 buddy, as well as getting very active on the jumping castle and obstacle course. It was a lovely celebration of the little people who bring such joy and wonder to our school community!

CCC Parenting Unpacked

by Ross & Sue Waltisbuhl Since 2007 and the launch of the first Smart Phone, our lives have changed irreversibly. Our world is moving from a “collective” to an “individual” society and what we do with our time is changing too. Kids have never had so many wonderful opportunities, however our children are experiencing issues with anxiety, depression and addiction - more than ever before. In our second Parenting Unpacked session we looked at some of the issues facing parents as we strive to help our children navigate the challenges of the new digital frontier and explore some strategies to build a foundation for success as our kids become young adults. Ross Waltisbuhl (Deputy Principal) and Sue Waltisbuhl (Director of Teaching and Learning) have raised three adult children. Below they share ‘8 tips for helping kids become all they can be’. 1. Get in the Zone

5. Consistent Bedtime

Take a breath, know that God is a good father and ask Him for patience, wisdom and strength. We cannot do this ‘parenting thing’ on our own – and we were not designed to do it solo. It takes a village to raise a child, so look to the wisdom of the scriptures, the example of other parents and the rest of our community.

Sleep is when the brain lays down most memories and resets for the next day. Healthy sleep patterns are critical for growth and wellbeing. Avoid ‘blue light’ devices in bedrooms. 6. Connect Face to Face

Parents know what is best for their children. We need to set clear boundaries and stick to our guns. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” ~Galatians 6:9

We see a lot of children who struggle with social interactions at school. They often complain of bullying when it can be more to do with a lack of social skills. Children need unstructured play with mixed ages in contexts with less direct adult supervision. Problem-solving and negotiation, understanding perspectives and others points of view are all critical skills for life in society.

3. Be Addiction Aware

7. Trade Screen for Green

Restrict access to addictive devices. Myopia is increasing at an alarming rate in western children and teens. Online games such as Fortnite and social media are designed to be addictive. They produce a Dopamine-Serotonin feedback loop that lays down neural pathways in children but is even more powerful in adolescents.

Spending time outside produces Vitamin D, but more importantly decreased sun exposure has been associated with a drop in Serotonin levels, which can lead to depression.

2. Get Good at Saying No

4. Encourage contributions to Community They have their “fun“ world, and we have our “work” world. Why aren’t children helping us in the kitchen or with laundry? Why don’t they tidy up their toys? This is basic monotonous work that trains the brain to be workable and function under “boredom”. This is the same “muscle” that is required to be eventually teachable at school.

8. Pray for our Kids Prayer is power. As parents we need to do this daily for our children. The full workshop is available on our Facebook page.

Student Wellbeing

SAFE & SUPPORTIVE

We know that students achieve their best at school in safe and supportive environments, where they are free from bullying and disruptive behaviour. At CCC we endeavour to make sure we provide a great environment for our students, including one that is free from bullying. Bullying is a serious issue for all of us. We know that it can happen anywhere, anytime, and can have devastating consequences. We also know that with the rise of social media, cyberbullying is an increasingly important issue. Where bullying was once confined to the playground, it can now occur online at any time of the day or night. Cyberbullying is just as harmful as face-to-face bullying, and online actions can have real life consequences.

this program by their PC teacher. The program has a series of tools and resources for parents and students to support students in preventing cyberbullying and how to practice Netiquette. These resources, called Bully Stoppers: Being Cool Online, are available on the Bully Stoppers website, at www.education.vic.gov.au/bullystoppers We encourage you to learn more by visiting the website and share the commitment to stop bullying and cyberbullying in our school and local community.

Students achieve their best at school in safe and supportive environments, where they are free from bullying and disruptive behaviour.

The best way to tackle bullying and cyberbullying is for schools, students and parents to work together. Cooloola Christian College will be using the Bully Stoppers campaign during Pastoral Care lessons. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will be guided through

During Year 10 PC classes, we are planning to discuss some important issues which we know can have an impact on students in secondary school. This includes the Australian Government’s e-safety Commissioner program, “Yes Project- Theme 1”. Parts of this program include sensitive information, and this will be dealt with accordingly by the PC teacher.

An outline to the content and skills covered in this program is as follows: •

Introduce students to resources to address social and digital challenges including cyberbullying and image-based abuse.

Skill-up students to lead, influence, mentor and support peers.

Explore how connecting with others helps to better shape students’ own digital cultures and communities.

Mental health and strategies to deal with stress or anxiety.

PC teachers from 7-12 will also discuss Biblical principles relating to our treatment of others and how we should view ourselves from the perspective of our Maker. If you have any concerns with your child participating in these programs or resulting discussion, please contact their PC teacher.

HOW TO RAISE ADAPTABLE KIDS BY TREVOR SIMPSON

* TREVOR SIMPSON IS A MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELLOR, A VETER AN YOUTH AND FAMILY THER APIST AND AN ADOLESCENT MENTAL STRENGTH COACH.*

Pete’s grade-school teacher announced a pop quiz, but Pete wasn’t prepared. Unable to answer the questions, he started to cry. This wasn’t the first time Pete reacted this way. He frequently needed support when he faced conflicts and challenging circumstances. To put it simply, Pete wasn’t able to adapt.

Some young people struggle socially, academically or emotionally when confronted with sudden and unexpected change.

Adaptability is the capacity to adjust to a change in circumstances, particularly when the change is unexpected. Kids are more adaptable when they’re able to employ skills like resilience, confidence, persistence, healthy risk and positive self-talk.

Adapt your parenting style

How can we as parents help our children to proactively adapt to different situations and adversity so they come out stronger and more capable?

William was a perfectionistic son. His parents noticed he avoided trying new things because he was afraid of failure. One day, William’s parents took him on a ski trip. He kept crying, “I can’t do this!” His parents recognised he needed to build his confidence and physical endurance. Rather than push him to try harder when he believed he couldn’t, they decided to offer him several active athletic options and let him choose the one he was ready to try.

Adaptability is the capacity to adjust to a change in circumstances, particularly when the change is unexpected.

As a licensed counsellor, I often hear comments that address an underlying concern about a child’s adaptability. • “Ever since he received a D on his test and was instructed to do revisions, he’s been disengaged. I think I’ve lost him.” • “She decides she can’t do it, gives up and checks out.”

Some children are predisposed to be less adaptable. Work hard to be aware of how your children uniquely

CCC CONNECT | Excellence

in Education

process their environment and plan accordingly. Pray that God will help you understand each child and his or her needs. Then give yourself permission to parent each of your children differently based on who they are. These differences may be large or small. Be willing to meet your children where they are and to help them grow through customised steps that lead to a more adaptable direction.

Let your kids fail Claire was a good student who earned top grades. But her mum noticed Claire was beginning to neglect her usual good study habits. After a few encouraging prompts to lean into her studies, Claire’s mum decided to let it go and let Claire deal with the results. When Claire did poorly on a test, rather than say, “I told you so,” her mum directed a conversation that led Claire to set her own goals for future tests and to make a plan that would allow her to achieve them. Provide clear guidance and expectations for your children, and then allow struggle. Adaptability and resilience are forged through challenges. As your children learn to turn to their own resources, they will have the opportunity to practice leaning on God’s sustaining strength for themselves. Resist the urge to rescue your children from difficult situations. By allowing them to fail, you help them learn what adaptation feels like and grow in the confidence of knowing they can overcome the unexpected.

Establish a solid foundation Sydney became over anxious about her social standing in the lunch room when a couple of new students joined the crowd at her usual table, leaving no room for her. She was tempted to make a big deal about the sting to her pride, but she remembered her value was not found through the eyes of other people. She asked another classmate, Grace, if she could sit at Grace’s table for lunch, and Grace gladly agreed. Teach your children that their identity is not found in what they do, what other people say about them or what they can control. Their identity is fully and wholly found in Christ, as beloved children of God, and that is the only identity that will last for eternity. When life surprises them or circumstances change, their identity in Christ provides an unmoving foundation on which they can stand. Praise your children’s efforts and individual problem-solving skills, and point out when you see them standing firm in God’s love.

Require sharing Kaitlyn spent quality time with her peers in two completely different contexts. She loved being part of the marching band at school and belonging to her church’s youth group. Both communities valued her presence and required a significant amount of time and commitment. In the past year, Kaitlyn spent countless hours learning formations and memorising songs to play with the band. She was also part of a curriculum development team for the second-grade vacation Bible school curriculum at her church. These experiences helped Kaitlyn practice patience and work through frustrations as she learned to be an individual within a group of many. As kids share space and possessions with others, they typically grow more flexible. If you have more than one child, require them to share often. If not, be sure your child spends plenty of time with other kids. Either way, encourage involvement in church groups, teams, musical groups and other sources of community. In these contexts, your kids will have plenty of opportunities to learn how to share, compromise and exercise flexibility. AROUND CCC In Design Technology, students in Year 4/5 worked collaboratively with a partner or small group to research, plan and design Noah’s Ark or a ship from the First Fleet (HaSS). They produced sketches of the layers inside the ships for people, animals and storage before replicating this in their model. Students were creative in their designs using recycled materials to reproduce the original vessel.

Year 6 Camp @ Luther Heights Year 6 Camp was a huge success thanks to the positive efforts, attitudes and behaviours of our Year 6 Leaders. Our volunteers were also amazing in supporting our students to develop teamwork and communication skills to approach challenging tasks and situations, life skills that go beyond the classroom. A huge thank-you to the Luther Heights Team as well for always putting on a quality program with professional staff, yummy and nutritious food, and clean amenities. The surfing and bodyboarding is always a highlight, and despite the rain, a great time was had by all. Thanks for the wonderful memories! Year 5 students travelled to the Ration Shed Museum and were given the opportunity to experience life in the Aboriginal community of Cherbourg. Within the precinct students viewed archival films, heard stories from the elders and looked at photographic displays and old documents that related to the lives and history of this settlement. Thank you for having us and for sharing with us!

OUTSIDE CCC

Year 6 visit to Cherbourg “On the 21st of May, the Year 6 class travelled to the Cherbourg Ration Shed and State School. It took us an hour and a half to drive there. As we arrived we were introduced to an Aboriginal elder named Eric and a lady named Cassandra. After we had our morning tea we watched a video about Cherbourg (Barambah). It was unimaginable about the pain and torture in that video, children taken from their homes and families, not having any choices and much more. It almost made me angry about how our ancestors treated them during that horrible time. Afterwards we were shown to an Aboriginal exhibits/museum (we learnt about the brave Aboriginals and some funny and unfortunate stories about some of the soldiers). Whilst there I gained much information about the Aboriginals and what tools they created and their way of life. When we explored the whole museum we were allowed to ask questions about their lives and ancestry. For me the highlight of this trip was learning about how much our country has improved from its past, and it has made me consider how much more we can still improve. - Lucy Sadler-Bridge

Connecting with the Community Connecting with the wider Gympie Community has been the theme of Term Two. The Term kicked off with preparations for the Gympie District Show. The children became farmers as they learnt how our Australian farmers support our community and prepared artwork for the Centre’s Art Display at the Show. However, the highlight for the Kindergarten children was their excursion to the Show where they got to see our local produce up close and pretend to be firefighters. Continuing with the theme of connecting to community the ELC hosted a Cupcakes and Craft morning for our Mothers. This was a time for the children Mothers, Grandmothers and Aunties to come and spend time with their precious little ones.

Service Learning

YEAR 6 LEGACY PROJECTS Year 6 students have been Learning to Serve and Serving to Learn. Through Semester One the class visited the ELC for buddy reading and to develop their leadership skills. Year 6 students were also challenged to create and implement a Legacy Project in Technologies. Considering sustainability goals for CCC and working collaboratively with peers, staff and the CCC community, the students have proposed several projects, including; ‘Seating for Eating’, ‘Containers for Change’, ‘Vegetable Garden’, ‘Chicken Coop’, ‘Games Club’, ‘Bush Tucker’, ‘Sustainable Straws at Solid Grounds’, ‘Recycling bins’ and ‘R U OK Day for Primary’. Several project teams have formed a clear proposal and are connecting with CCC staff and community to assist with the implementation of their projects. Keep an eye on the weekly bulletin and school events to see how you can become involved and support the implementation of these great projects!

CHAPLAINCY OUTREACH This term we have extended our Chaplaincy Outreach to serve two schools - Gympie West & Gympie South State Schools. They were excited to have us visit and lead a religious instruction program. The program was based around the story of The Good Shepherd and the memory verse from John 10:14:

“I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and they know me. Craft activities consisted of making sheep puppets, bookmarks, colouring puzzles and pictures. It is a fun and interactive program which is always a hit and engages the students in multiple ways.

COMMUNITY

Chappy Week

School Chaplains, or chappies, provide invaluable spiritual and emotional support to students and the wider school community. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for children and young people in times of crisis, and those who just need a friend. Thank you to our Chappy, Andrew, who lovingly guides and encourages our students. We value you, and your contribution to our school. Thank you to the Faith in Action group who organised a little something yummy for Chappy during ‘Chaplaincy Week’ with his morning cup of coffee.

Volunteers Week CCC is blessed to have some amazing volunteers. Volunteers make a difference at Cooloola Christian College every single day. From Board Directors who give of their time to govern the College, and parents and grandparents who listen to students read, to those who help make lunches in the tuckshop and those that give of their time at working bees.

Thank you to the many people who help make Cooloola Christian College a better place. Lex Buchanan is one such volunteer who has always been part of Cooloola Christian College. He was instrumental in the planning and development of the school and served as a Board Director for over 22 years. His vision for and commitment to the College have been greatly appreciated by everyone. On behalf of the school community, we say thank you for your many, many years of dedicated service. In upper Primary this semester, we’ve had support from a few parents helping out in the classroom, with excursions and coordinating class events. We’d like to say a special thank you to one of our fathers, Josh Geiger, who has been a familiar face in English, Design Technology, Science and HaSS lessons. Josh always comes with a smile, patience and a good sense of humour as he sits alongside the children listening and helping them to complete their work. Please take time to thank a volunteer today who serves you in our community!

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. The 2019 NSS Storybook was ‘Alpacas with Maracas’ written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove. CCC Primary students celebrated NSS with a variety of activities. Students ate morning tea in the hall and watched Jimmy Rees and Matt Cosgrove read the book with a couple alpaca friends. Following that, some students across Primary shared their God-given gifts in a talent show; just like in the story. After that, classes rotated through some age-appropriate literacy and arts activities. A big thank you to Mr Nathan Chapman who organised sound and lighting for the event!

ACADEMY

Football Academy is now in its third year, and continues to grow in popularity! Held every Thursday morning at the CCC Phil McLaren Oval from 7am by Principal Trevor Norman, students are taught technical skills such as dribbling, control, passing and shooting. Open to all students from Years 4 to 8, it’s a great opportunity to learn some new skills or refine existing skills. Players receive a training shirt after 10 sessions, short & socks after 20 sessions, and a football after 30 sessions. The cost is $6 per session or $40 per term. Pop down and join in the fun!

Cross Country

WIDE BAY TRIALS

Congratulations to our CCC Cross Country Team! Jenna Williams and Connor Davies were both Age Champions and Sienna Downing, Bella Gignac and Stefan Bailey placed third at the District Events. 11 of our students were then selected to represent Gympie at the Wide Bay Trials earlier this month.

ACADEMY

Established this year by parent volunteer Gina Moore, Netball Academy is held each Tuesday morning from 7.30am at the Stan Baker Hall. Gina trains the students in netball skills including – passing, shooting, positioning and footwork, plus game rules. Around 15 students (from Years 3 to 6) attend each week and they are loving it! Students are welcome to start at any time during the term. We have a special discount for Term 3 - $25 per term (for nonNetball Association members) or $10 per term (for Netball Association members), or $6 per session. We are also inviting interest from students in Years 7 to 9 to join in Term 3. So if you are keen to be a part of Netball Academy, please email netball@ccc.qld.edu.au and register your interest. If we have suitable numbers, we will be able to run a session for these older students at the same time. So come along and give it a try!

“Hi, my name is Miah Birt and I do both netball district and Netball Academy. For Netball District you do games on Monday and we do training on Wednesday. I am in a team called the CCC Stars. We work great as a team and have won every game except two. It would be great to see more teams play for CCC. We have three coaches Gina Moore (a parent of CCC students), her daughter Julia Moore and Julia’s friend Darcey Oliver. Julia and Darcey are in Year 10 and are great to train with. Some drills we do at Netball Academy include chest, bounce and shoulder passes. After we do our drills we do either a half-court or a full court game. It would be great to see you there on Tuesday mornings at 7:30am.” CCC CONNECT | Term 2 | 2019
