May Your Days Be
Merry & Bright
It’s the most wonderful time of the year... If you follow (cool) progeny all year, you know that our family -- in particular -- has a lot to be thankful for this season. And much to celebrate, too! It’s been an adventurous 2013. When the Bug was born, my mom gave me one piece of advice that has stuck with me: your most important job is to make this child’s childhood magical. The holiday season is all about making magic. That spark that cues your internal movie soundtrack because things fall into place perfectly, or not so perfectly. It’s about laughter. It’s about hope. It’s about reaching out to others. It’s about the gleam in your child’s eye as they open something they’ve been wishing for. It’s airplane rides in the kitchen. Cocoa and cookies. Family get togethers with everyone squashed around the dining room table. {Sure! We can seat another!} Holiday magic making doesn’t require a degree in cooking or crafting. We’re giving you the tips! Angela whipped up some amazing side dishes that the whole family will love. Melissa styled the most adorable kid-friendly table you’ve ever seen. Jen is in the kitchen cooking up some holiday style. The Bug and I swung by Local Color Flowers for kidfriendly swag-making. We also spent an afternoon with the ah-mazing ladies at Haute Blow Dry Bar, who are dishing holiday hair tips. Those trinkets and toys and things that make noise? We’ve culled our favorite Baltimore- area stores and local online retailers and have pulled together150 fabulous finds. We talked with shop owners and asked them about what they’re excited about this holiday season. The result? Well. We think Santa will approve. May your days be merry and bright this season. Cheers!

HAUTE Tips and Tricks for At-Home Styling... 1. "Rough-dry" hair until it's about 50% dry. 2. With a round brush, remember to start in the front of the hair 3. Keep your brush and sections around brush in vertical position-- and be sure to dry hair away from the face. 4. While some product helps give body and holds the style longer (such as Davines' "Volume Mouse" or "Volu Mist"), NEVER over load your hair with too much product,. It’ll cause the opposite effect.
Big Event? Leave it to the pros.
Keep your Professional Blow-Out for days... 1. Protect your hair with a shower cap! (for an extra "boost, roll your hair in velcro rollers or pin curls, before covering with shower cap. Let the the shower heat and steam work FOR you!) 2. Invest in a great dry shampoo such as Davines' "Hair Refresher" -- with odor neutralizing molecules and no white residue-- to extend the life of your blowout. 3. On day 3/4 add a barrel curling iron to your styling regimen.

Seasonal side Dishes Written By Angela Mirra Photography By Heather Walsh
Tired of the same old sweet potato casserole? Want to rev up your holiday sides with locally-sourced ingredients? Here are three recipes for seasonal side dishes, perfect for holiday get-togethers.
{{Don’t worry. They’re palate pleasers for kids of all ages. }}
Roasted Butternut Squash and Goat Cheese Casserole with Leeks and Toasted Hazelnuts
Makes 6 Side Servings • 2 large butternut squashes (peeled & cubed) • 4 leeks, trimmed and washed, white/ light green parts only) • 1 small log of soft goat cheese • 2 tbsp butter • 1/2 to 1 cups of chicken or vegetable broth • 1/2 cup Hazelnuts • Dash of cinnamon or nutmeg Preheat oven to 375. Toss to coat cubed butternut squash in olive oil, sea salt and cracked black pepper Lay out evenly on a roasting tray and bake until tender, nicely roasted on edges and set aside. While squash is roasting slice leeks and sauté in about 2 tbsp of butter. Sauté on medium heat until fragrant and translucent, add dash of cinnamon or nutmeg and continue to cook down on medium to low heat, total of about 20 to 25 minutes. Once squash is fully roasted and leeks are full of good buttery flavor, begin to layer in a baking dish, preferably one you can cover.
Layer leeks first, then butternut squash, add a few large crumbles of goat cheese on this layer, repeat these steps until you are finished with both squash and leeks. Add the most goat cheese to the top, cover and put into a 350 degree oven. Meanwhile take a cast iron or good quality pan out to toast the hazelnuts On medium heat put one layer of hazelnuts in pan and watch closely! Shake pan vigorously over heat often, until hazelnuts are browned and/or quite fragrant. Let cool on a cutting board. Take your casserole out of the oven and slowly add about 1/2 to 1 cup of your broth around the outside and put back into the oven uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes. Dish should be hot and goat cheese should look slightly melted, warm and delicious! Roughly chop your toasted hazelnuts with a good knife, and to top just before serving. Enjoy!
1 1/2 bunches Dino (Lacinato) kale 1/2 to 1 cup dried cranberries 1 cup pine nuts for toasting Granny Smith apple (optional) 1/2 avocado 1 finely chopped shallot Juice of at least 1/2 lemon 1/2 tsp of lemon zest A few glugs of olive oil Sea salt Black pepper
layer, watching closely as these are very oily and can burn quickly. Every so often shake the pan vigorously over burner, make sure both sides get toasted to a nice light brown. In your mini cuisinart or blender add 1/2 an avocado, juice of 1/2 a lemon, finely chopped shallot and pulse until blended. Continue to add glugs of olive oil, lemon zest and pulse again until combined. Add sea salt and black pepper to taste
Immediately scoop dressing out and add to your bed of raw greens, using washed bare hands, you need to toss and massage kale with your creamy dressing. Keep folding it over and rubbing kale together until it is fully coated. It should be creamy but not like you have poured wet dressing over greens, more like it has just thickened the greens a bit. Test taste it and add more lemon juice or olive oil if needed. Let this sit for some time. About 10/15 minutes before serving, add cranberries, toasted pine nuts, and thinly sliced apples, toss again. This is an excellent dish to make In a cast iron or other high quality pan you can toast ahead, and pairs so well with the classic holiday the pine nuts and set aside. Toast them in an even dishes. Rinse and dry kale. Take out the lower 1/2 inch of rough stem by cutting it out, then layer kale leaves on top of each other and roll tightly NOTE: You may not be able to use all the leaves in the bunch for this chopping technique, Try separating them. Once they are rolled as tight as you can get them, finely slice the kale in fairly thin ribbons. Once kale is thinly sliced, put into a big bowl. Add a pinch of sea salt, toss with hands gently, and set aside.
Creamy Raw Kale Salad {{easy to make ahead!}}
Makes 6 Side Servings
Individual Stuffed Acorn Squash with Fried Sage Farro
3 acorn squash, cut crosswise, de-seeded 2 tbsp butter Drizzle of honey Tamari soy sauce Package of Farro Glugs of olive oil 2 cloves of garlic Mushrooms (shitake or cremini work well) Whole Italian red chilies French green beans, cut on a slant into 1/2” pieces 2 Sage leaves 1 to 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place both acorn halves in a baking pan, flesh side up with about a 1/2 inch of water in the pan. Using a fork, poke a few holes in the flesh. Add 1/2 tbsp of butter to each squash cavity, drizzle with honey, dash of tamari and black pepper. Cook squash until tender and easily pierced with a fork. Approximately 45 minutes to one hour. Meanwhile prepare the Farro as directed on the box (or bag). I like to cook Farro like I am cooking pasta, there's less measuring! Fill a pot of water or broth and bring to a boil, empty entire contents of Farro and
cook until tender. Drain well and let sit cooling on a parchment lined cookie sheet to avoid clumping. While Farro cools, heat olive oil over medium to high heat. Once olive oil is glistening, throw 2 whole sage leaves in and let them crisp. You can use butter here instead of olive oil if you prefer. Remove once they are fried and crispy. Set aside. Using the sage infused olive oil, begin to sauté whole chile peppers and the whole peeled garlic. Remove garlic once it has become wilted down and brownish. Add sliced mushrooms and sauté until very tender and juicy. Add broth as needed to keep the mushrooms moist. Remove mushrooms and set aside. Using the same pan, add at least a cup of broth and let it simmer. Once it is simmering throw green beans in for a few minutes to blanch. Combine all ingredients in a bowl: farro, mushrooms, broth, and the blanched green beans. Toss and let sit for a few minutes - once squash is out of the oven you can spoon your farro mixture into the cavity of the acorn squash; cover it slightly with foil, and throw back into the oven for less than 10 minutes before serving.

swag {{making}}
Holiday Decorating Holiday swags are such a great project to make with kids because they allow for total personalization! Your kids will love choosing out the greens, pinecones, berries, ornaments, and ribbon! Making a swag takes only about 15 minutes, and once it’s done you’ll have a beautiful decoration for your front door, or perfect gift to give to Grandma!
Supplies • Variety of christmas greens (preferably purchased locally!) For this swag, we used white pine, cedar, fir, and nandina. The more variety, the prettier! Use whatever you can from your yard or the farmers market. If you know the names of the greens, try to teach them to your kids as you assemble your swag. They’ll love feeling the different textures of prickly (fir) soft (pine) and smooth (cedar). • Any color of Berries. For this swag we used different colors of winterberry. Bittersweet and holly would also work well. • Pinecones, bells, or anything dried for decoration. For this swag, we used pinecones foraged from the park. I spray painted pinecones in a variety of colors so the kids could choose out their favorite! Silver and gold always look nice. You can always go natural too. • Ornaments. For decorating this swag, I grabbed a box of old Christmas balls out of storage. You probably have some lying around, right? • Holiday ribbon for a bow. Anything pretty!
Layer gre
How to Make Your Swag Layer greens and berries together into sprayed out bundle, facing away from you. As you layer, try to mix the different varieties together. Once you have your berry and green base made, it’s time to start decorating. To add the pinecones, tie a piece of green twine (from the hardware store) around the base of the pinecone. Try to tie it a bit inside the pinecone so the string is hidden and secure. Once the pinecones are strung, layer them into your bundle of greens, camouflaging the string under the greens. To add the ornaments - if they don’t have a string on them already, take a piece of wire and string it through the top of the ornament. Twist wire to secure, and layer ornaments into greenery. If at this point you can still see a bit of the string from the pinecones, or wire from the ornaments, add a few short pieces of greenery at the top of your swag to hide your mechanics. To bind the entire swag together, I like to use a zip tie. It’s really the easiest and most secure thing to use! The zip tie is also strong enough that it allows you to hang the whole swag from it once you’re done, without needing an additional hook. If you don’t have a zip tie on hand, you can use wire or twine, just make sure it is super tight. Before you pull your zip tie tight, make sure that all the ends of your greenery, berries, pinecones, and ornaments, are lined up so that once you pull the zip tie, you capture every piece. Once you’ve bound everything together, trim the ends of your greenery so that it’s flat, or at least looks cleaned up. For the final step, let your child choose their favorite ribbon for a bow. Tie the ribbon around the top of the swag, just as you would tie a shoe. If your child knows how, they can even do it! Make a nice big bow, trim the ends of the ribbon, and you’re done! Now you’ll have a beautiful swag for the rest of the Holiday season!

Holiday Science This holiday season, have the kids cook up some science projects featuring a few of our favorite festive foods. Let’s begin...
Materials Chocolate chips ● Popcorn kernels ● Fresh cranberries ● Paper bag ● Butter or olive oil ● Salt ● Sugar ● Water ● Milk Heat is energy we can add to change the state of matter. In this case, the matter we’re working with is food. There are 3 states of matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas. Ask the kids to list some foods in each state. It’ll make it easier if you consider drinks food too. They’ll quickly arrive at the conclusion that foods don’t start as gas, although they can end up as it. Eww! Since even young kids can appreciate the steps of the scientific process, go ahead and present the kids with the steps. You can either have kids say, write or draw their responses. Question: Can heat change the state of matter (popcorn kernels, cranberries and chocolate chips)? Hypothesis: How will the matter change? Test the Hypothesis: Let’s add some heat and see what happens. Observation: What happened when we added energy (heat)? Conclusion: What did we observe in each of our experiments?
Experiments Popcorn Place 1/4 cup popcorn kernels into a brown paper bag with 2 teaspoons butter or olive oil and a dash of salt. Fold down the opening of the bag several times. Place in the microwave for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until you hear the popping slow.
Cranberry Sauce Place 1/2 cup cranberries, 1/4 cup water and 1/4 cup sugar into a saucepan. Heat over medium to medium high heat until cranberries burst and sauce thickens. Hot Cocoa Melt a 1/2 cup of chocolate chips in a saucepan over low heat. Add 1 cup milk, stir. Heat until warm.
Being a scientist is exhausting work. Go ahead, take a break and sample your work. Final conclusion: yum.

Holiday Celebrations
Winter Wonderland kids’ tablE Written & Photographed By Melissa Mutterer Ah, “The Kids’ Table.” We’ve all been there; it’s a childhood rite of passage to be seated for every holiday meal at the card table in the corner (or if you were me, my Aunt’s kitchen table) with your siblings, cousins, and family friends of varying ages and interests. Inevitably, we always finished eating well before the grownups, and were left to our own devices until it was time for dessert...which is a scary thing to think about now that I’m the hostess and I have a growing number of kids coming along to each holiday event I plan. So I decided to devise a holiday kids’ table to keep the smaller crowd busy in their seats and buy mom and dad a little extra time to enjoy a meal and catch up in some adult conversation... now that we've finally arrived at the Grownup Table.
Layer gre
To get started, I enlisted the help of Sophie, my seven-year-old daughter, co-hostess, and creative adviser, to come up with a theme for this holiday kids’ table. We knew we wanted to incorporate Roy G. Biv, but how would we make rainbows feel festive and “holiday-ish”? Sparkles and snow, of course! We decided to call this sparkly, snowy, rainbow theme “Winter Wonderland”. On my wish list? Something that I could pull out and re-use for any winter celebration, with a vintage-y nostalgic feel to it. Now that we had our vision, it was time to execute it in a kid-friendly way. First things first: my daughter does not do anything less than fancy. And I like to be eco-friendly wherever possible, so a plastic tablecloth and paper napkins just weren’t going to cut it for this kids’ table. And let’s face it: plain old table linens are Just. NOT. Fancy. So we set out to create our own. Taking a cue from the (cool) progeny apple stamped napkins , we used some tiny potatoes (scored for free from our local farmers’ market!) to create these fun snowmen stamped napkins. Tip: to help little fingers grip the potatoes, use an eye-hook to create a handle. To tie it all together, we sponge-painted a plain white table runner using fabric paint in all the colors of the rainbow, and die-cut foam snowflakes (left from last year’s holiday crafting) turned stencils. These two projects took less than an hour, and made for a great after-school activity on a day we had free from extracurriculars! Vintage-printed cardstock made quick placemats and added a whimsical, nostalgic feel to the table. Bonus? They're white on the back and doubled as a blank slate for coloring later on. I also added a washable white tablecloth under it all for extra fanciness. For a simple centerpiece, colorful plastic ornaments and a tree (found in the attic among our spring decor)
added a sparkly pop of color. On either side of the tree, acrylic wine glasses filled with epsom salt “snow and an LED candle provided kid-safe ambience. Finishing touches included small metal buckets filled with crayons and placed around the table for every kiddo to reach. For the older girls, I set out a mason jar full of colored pencils. Since holiday meals at our house are set up buffet-style, there was no need for a full place setting since dinner plates and utensils were set up alongside the spread in the other room. Instead, Sophie set each place with a clear glass appetizer plate and a jelly jar with a sparkly paper straw, ready for a little snack and drink before dinner! Tip: Save the lids for the jelly jars and use them to send home leftovers or dessert! When guests arrived, the centerpiece was swapped out for a 3-tiered server full of fruits and veggies in all the colors of the rainbow (prepped ahead of time) to keep hungry tummies at bay, and to give moms and dads a chance to grab a libation and settle in. As the younger crowd finished up their apps, plates were cleared and centerpieces swapped back out to give the kids some room to get started on their first activity: a DIY Rainbow Snowflake Pennant Banner. Once completed, banners were folded and bagged up, and stored in a basket for later. Tip: This one was a tiny bit tricky for toddlers, since each snowflake needs to be knotted in place, so time it to be done while adults are still mingling, or enlist older kids to help the younger ones. To keep them busy while the grownups could eat at a more relaxing pace, each child was given a Happy New Year postcard, which I designed and had printed on cardstock at a local printer (turnaround time: 2 hours). After their dinner was cleared with help from the older kids, little hands got busy writing 2014 wishes to far away family and friends. Once those were done, placemats were flipped over and our little artists drew some wild winter scenes. Tip: Provide stamps so postcards can be dropped in the mail whenever it's convenient. After Christmas dinner at our house, we’ll
drop everyone’s right in our mailbox so they’ll make it to their destination by December 31st! You can download the free printable at (cool) progeny!}} For a send-off, I pre-assembled treat bags along with a strung tag bearing each child’s name. These were stored in a basket, and this became my drop station for completed activities. While guests enjoy dessert, I added each child’s postcard and a handful of crayons to bags, and tied off with their name tag and an ornament from the centerpiece. The basket was set by the front door and my little co-host(ess) handed off these parting gifts and sent guests out into a real Winter Wonderland!
