Letter from the Editor:

AS I SIT DOWN to write this letter, there’s a palpable sense of excitement in the air. Soon, we’ll be embarking on a 30-day camping adventure through the picturesque landscapes of the northeast United States and the Canadian Maritimes. This journey promises to be a time of exploration, relaxation, and discovery - something I know many of you, our readers, cherish just as much as we do. I’m very fortunate that my employer started offering 4-week paid sabbaticals to their employees every 5 year cycle.

In planning for this trip, I’ve been reflecting on two simple but powerful ideas that I believe will shape not just our journey, but also how we approach life in general.

First, the concept of experiencing life with our eyes wide open. As we navigate through the stunning vistas, quaint towns, and vibrant communities of New England and the Maritimes, it’s important to approach every moment with an open heart and mind. In our fast-paced world, it’s all too easy to get caught up in preconceived notions or be influenced by the opinions of others. But when we allow ourselves to experience the world with a fresh perspective - free from judgment and bias - we open ourselves up to a richness of experience that might otherwise pass us by.

Whether it’s a spontaneous conversation with a fellow traveler, an unexpected detour to a hidden gem, or simply the serenity of nature, there’s so much to absorb and enjoy when we’re fully present and open to the journey. It’s about embracing each moment, each experience, with a sense of curiosity and wonder, allowing ourselves to truly connect with the world around us. The second idea is the power of a smile. It’s often said that smiles (and laughter) are contagious, and I couldn’t agree more. During our travels, I’ve found that the simple act of smiling at someone - whether it’s a stranger passing by on a hiking trail or the person checking us in at a campground - can create an instant connection. There’s something truly magical about seeing a smile reflected back at you; it’s a universal language that transcends borders, cultures, and backgrounds.

As we prepare to set out on this journey, I encourage you all to embrace these two ideas in your own travels and everyday life. Keep your eyes wide open, ready to experience the world with an open mind and heart, and don’t forget to share a smile with those you meet along the way. You never know the kind of impact a simple smile can have, both on your own experience and on the people around you.

Here’s to the adventures ahead, both near and far, and to the countless smiles and unforgettable experiences waiting to be discovered.

WE'RE EXCITED to bring something new to our cooking section—our very first camp cocktail recipe! And what better way to kick off this series than with a classic, easy-to-make drink that’s both refreshing and flavorful: the Bee’s Knees.

The Bee’s Knees is a Prohibition-era cocktail made with gin, fresh lemon juice, and honey syrup. It’s known for its bright, citrusy taste with a hint of sweetness, making it a perfect companion for a relaxing evening by the campfire. One of the best things about the Bee’s Knees is its simplicity. With just three ingredients, it’s easy to whip up, even when you’re out in the middle of nowhere.

Why the Bee’s Knees is Perfect for Camping

When you’re camping, you want recipes that are straightforward and don’t require a lot of gear or hard-to-find ingredients. The Bee’s Knees fits the bill perfectly. You can easily pack a small bottle of gin, a lemon or two, and a jar of honey in your camping kitchen. All you need to do is mix the ingredients, shake them with some ice (if you have it), and you’ve got a delicious, sophisticated drink to enjoy under the stars.

If you’re looking for a non-alcoholic alternative, you’re in luck! The Bee’s Knees can be just as delightful without the gin. Simply replace the

gin with a splash of club soda or tonic water, and you’ll have a refreshing mocktail that still delivers that bright lemony flavor with a touch of honey sweetness. It’s a great option for those who prefer a non-alcoholic beverage but still want to join in on the fun.

So, as you’re planning your next camping trip, consider adding the Bee’s Knees to your list of must-make recipes. Its simplicity, versatility, and delicious taste make it an ideal choice for enjoying the great outdoors. Whether you’re sipping the original cocktail or the non-alcoholic version, this drink is sure to elevate your camping experience. Cheers to new traditions and tasty campfire cocktails!

Ingredients

• Gin

• Lemons

• Honey

• Water

Directions

1. Make the honey syrup mixing equal parts water and honey and warm until the honey completely dissolves. I recommend a half cup of each. Transfer to an airtight container and chill. This will keep, refrigerated, for up to one month, so it might be easier to

prepare at home.

2. Add 2 ounces of gin, ¾ ounce lemon juice (freshly squeezed), and ½ ounce honey syrup into a shaker with ice (if you have it) and shake until chilled.

3. Strain into a cocktail glass or insulated cup to keep it cold while you drink

4. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Note: If your lemons are fresh and ripe, the sweetness can vary greatly. The above is the standard recipe, but it may be too sour for your taste, so adjust by adding more honey syrup.

Some people suggest adding a few sprigs of thyme to the honey syrup for added flavor.

Tip: If you don’t have a shot glass, but have a measuring or large spoon, 0.5 ounces is equal to 1 Tablespoon. So the recipe would be 4 Tablespoons gin, 1.5 Tablespoons lemon juice, and 1 Tablespoon honey syrup. g

We made this using local honey and gin from Iron Fish Distillery, in Thompsonville, Michigan.

Unplugged and on the Road

WHEN YOU IMAGINE long-term camping, especially a 51-day journey across national parks, the thought can seem both exhilarating and overwhelming. For Sean, however, this extended adventure was the fulfillment of a dream years in the making. As an IT professional working for a school district in Colorado, Sean found his summers perfectly aligned with his passion for exploring the great outdoors. With the school year on pause, he seized the opportunity to unplug from society, setting off on an epic journey that would take him through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the United States.

A life goal: camping in every national park

Sean's journey wasn’t just a spur-of-themoment idea; it was a carefully crafted plan with a clear purpose. “One of my life goals is to camp in every national park in the U.S. and Canada where camping is available,” Sean shares. He had already visited several parks in the past, but felt he hadn’t spent enough time to truly appreciate their beauty. This trip was his chance to revisit those places and discover new ones along the way.

The planning process was extensive and

An interview with Sean Tobin after his 51-day teardrop adventure BY LISA ADAMS

detailed, beginning nearly a year in advance. Sean spent months meticulously organizing every detail, ensuring that nothing was left to chance. “I started planning this trip in November 2023 and finished by March 2024,” he explains. His tools of choice included Google Maps, Microsoft Excel, and AllTrails, each playing a crucial role in ensuring that his journey would be as seamless as possible.

One of the standout aspects of Sean's planning was his use of AI technology,

AllTrails, a popular app for hikers, was another essential tool in Sean’s planning arsenal. After identifying potential trails through ChatGPT, Sean turned to AllTrails to dive deeper into each option. “AllTrails helped me see if the trails recommended were something I’d enjoy, and it allowed me to view recent reviews and conditions,” Sean notes. The combination of these tools not only made the planning process more efficient but also ensured that Sean’s itinerary was packed with activities perfectly suited to his preferences.

which Cool Tears has been highlighting in a recent series of articles. He utilized ChatGPT to gather information about the parks he intended to visit. “I asked ChatGPT about popular hikes, key historical sites, and the best photography spots,” he says. This approach saved him countless hours sifting through various websites and forums. Instead of getting lost in a sea of information, ChatGPT provided Sean with a consolidated, easy-toread guide tailored to his interests.

The Importance of Preparation

For a journey of this magnitude, preparation is key. Sean’s approach to planning was thorough, ensuring that nothing was left to chance. “Make a detailed itinerary, bring cash, and always have a backup plan,” he advises. He emphasizes the importance of making campsite reservations well in advance, particularly in popular parks where first-come, first-served sites are often hard to come by.

But planning isn’t just about where you’ll sleep at night. Sean also made sure that his vehicle and trailer were in top shape before hitting the road. His 2018 Subaru Crosstrek, a small yet reliable tow vehicle with over 142,000 miles, was meticulously maintained. “I checked everything from fluid levels to tire pressure, and even replaced the wheel bearings on my teardrop trailer,” Sean recalls. “The last thing I wanted was a mechanical failure in the middle of nowhere.”

His trailer, a Boony Stomper from Sunnyside

OffRoad, was also prepared to perfection. The Boony Stomper is a minimalist teardrop trailer, designed to be both lightweight and rugged. “It’s big enough to sleep one person comfortably, and I’ve got a solar panel on top that powers a solar generator inside,” Sean explains. This setup allowed him to keep his electronics charged and his lights on, even in the most remote locations.

The Journey Begins: From Planning to Reality

As Sean set off on his 51-day adventure, the months of planning paid off almost immediately. His first stop was Lake Mead, where he began to immerse himself in the routine of long-term camping. Each day brought new challenges and rewards, from navigating mountain passes with his small tow vehicle to finding moments of peace and solitude in nature.

One of the most important aspects of Sean’s journey was flexibility. While he had a set itinerary for campsites, he kept his daily activities open-ended. “I didn’t want to be on a schedule as much as I already was with driving from park to park,” he says. This approach allowed him to fully enjoy each destination, whether it meant hiking a challenging trail or simply relaxing by the water.

AllTrails quite a bit to help plan my trip,” Sean mentions. These tools were invaluable in finding the best hikes, historic sites, and photography spots. “ChatGPT did an excellent job consolidating suggestions into an easy-to-read format, and AllTrails helped me decide which trails to tackle.”

Unexpected Challenges and Memorable Moments

No journey is without its challenges, and Sean’s trip was no exception. One of the first

Sean’s love for nature and photography guided much of his trip. He spent hours exploring trails, capturing stunning landscapes, and soaking in the beauty of the national parks. “I used ChatGPT and

obstacles he encountered was at Kirk Creek, where he arrived after an eight-hour drive only to find his reserved campsite occupied by another group. “They were pretty settled in, but the campground host helped sort it out,” Sean recalls. It took three hours for the group to pack up and leave, but Sean didn’t let the setback ruin his spirits.

Another unexpected challenge came when one of his campsite reservations was canceled due to a fallen tree. “I got an email at 3 AM

the morning I was supposed to arrive,” Sean says. Fortunately, the campground office was able to find him a last-minute spot, but it was a reminder of the importance of having a backup plan.

Despite these challenges, Sean’s journey was filled with unforgettable moments. Some of the highlights included hiking the steep Vernal Fall trail in Yosemite with friends, relaxing on tranquil beaches, and meeting other solo campers along the way. “I lost 22 pounds during the trip, which was a nice added bonus,” he jokes.

Sean’s encounters with fellow travelers were some of the most rewarding experiences. “It’s fun to talk to other people, share trips we’ve done, and discuss things in the park that we look forward to doing,” he says. These connections added a sense of community to his solo journey, making each stop along the way even more meaningful.

Lessons Learned: Wisdom from the Road

prepared for anything. “Bring tools, know your car, and be ready to make repairs if necessary,” he advises. During his trip, Sean encountered a loose serpentine belt tensioner pulley on his car. Luckily, he was near a Subaru dealer and had the tools to fix it on the spot. “It really does pay to be a weekend shade tree mechanic,” he adds.

Another key piece of advice Sean offers is to always keep your gas tank at least half full. “When your gas tank is halfway empty, treat it like it’s empty,” he says. This approach ensures

After 51 days on the road, Sean emerged with a wealth of knowledge about long-term camping. One of the most important lessons he learned was the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. “Not all national parks have showers, so I used wet wipes to help,” he explains. He also made sure to do laundry regularly, using a camp laundry bag to wash his clothes and hanging them up to dry while he was out on hikes.

Sean also stresses the importance of being

that you won’t find yourself stranded in a remote area without fuel.

The Teardrop Life: Simplicity and Comfort

Sean’s teardrop trailer, the Boony Stomper, played a crucial role in the success of his journey. Its minimalist design and lightweight construction made it easy to tow with his Subaru Crosstrek, while its simple setup allowed Sean to quickly settle into each

new campsite. “I fell in love with the idea of a teardrop trailer because of its simplicity, comfort, and practicality,” Sean says.

The Boony Stomper’s small size didn’t mean sacrificing comfort. Inside, Sean had everything he needed for a good night’s sleep, and the trailer’s solar-powered setup provided enough energy to keep his devices charged and his lights on. The Boony Stomper is a lightweight off-road teardrop with no hatch for a galley kitchen. “I didn’t want a rear hatch because it would increase the chances

Even after such an extensive journey, Sean’s love for travel shows no signs of slowing down. “I’m already planning a fall trip to enjoy the foliage in Colorado,” he says. He’s also considering a trip to the Appalachian Mountains next summer, a region he has yet to explore.

For Sean, the journey is never really over. Whether he’s on the road or planning his next adventure, the call of the wild is always there. His advice to others considering long-term camping is simple: “Plan well, stay flexible, and enjoy every moment.”

of leaks,” he explains. Instead, he kept his cooking gear in his car, which allowed him to prepare meals wherever he stopped.

Sean also appreciated the curiosity his teardrop trailer sparked among other campers. “People were always asking to see the inside and asking about it,” he says. It was a great conversation starter and allowed Sean to share his love for teardrop camping with others.

Looking Ahead: The Next Adventure

Final Thoughts: Embracing the Adventure

Sean’s 51-day journey is a testament to the power of careful planning, the importance of flexibility, and the joy of embracing the unknown. His story is not just about camping in national parks but about living fully, following your passions, and finding peace in the simplicity of life on the road.

As Sean prepares for his next adventure, his words of wisdom resonate with those who dream of similar journeys. “You’re out in nature, so enjoy it and respect it.”

Articulating Hitches

The pros and cons of using one for your tiny camper BY COOL TEARS STAFF

WHEN TOWING, a teardrop camper on rugged terrains like two-track roads or forest service roads, the standard ball - and - coupler hitch can sometimes feel limiting. These terrains often present challenges that require more flexibility than a traditional hitch can offer. That’s where an articulating hitch comes into play. Designed for more demanding off-road adventures, these hitches provide greater articulation and flexibility. However, like any upgrade, there are pros and cons to consider.

What Is an Articulating Hitch?

An articulating hitch allows for increased movement between the vehicle and the trailer, offering a full 360-degree rotation and more lateral flexibility than a standard hitch.

This can be crucial when navigating uneven ground, steep inclines, or tight corners where a standard hitch may cause issues, including trailer sway or even disconnect.

For the first few years, we used a traditional hitch for our teardrop but then upgraded to a Max Coupler, described below. Since we’ve always preferred to camp in remote locations (even though our first teardrop was designed for road travel), we wanted to feel confident that the hitch couldn’t pop off the ball if the truck was canted to the left, while the teardrop was canted to the right while traveling down a trail. We were also tired of hearing the constant “clunking” or feeling the small “jerk” when the ball would move a little bit inside the hitch.

Pros of Using an Articulating Hitch for Teardrop Campers

• Greater Flexibility on Rough Terrain When camping down two-track or forest service roads, the ground is often uneven, with dips, rocks, and tight turns. An articulating hitch allows your trailer to move more freely with your vehicle, minimizing the risk of damaging your trailer or hitch. It ensures that the camper can stay level even as your tow vehicle maneuvers tricky terrain. For those who seek out the quiet, untouched spots for camping, this extra flexibility makes off-roading safer and more enjoyable.

• Reduced Stress on the Hitch and Trailer With a traditional hitch, there’s a limit to the range of motion between the trailer and tow vehicle, which can cause unnecessary stress on both. This stress can lead to potential damage over time, especially when you're navigating challenging off-road environments. An articulating hitch distributes the force more evenly, reducing wear and tear on both the hitch and the trailer’s frame. This prolongs the lifespan of your teardrop camper and its connection to your vehicle.

• Improved Safety on Slopes and Uneven Ground One of the most dangerous situations when towing a trailer is when the vehicle and trailer are on different planes, such as when traversing a slope or rocky trail. A traditional hitch might cause the trailer to pull

Helinox: A Trusted Brand of Cool Tears since 2019

against the vehicle in awkward ways, increasing the chance of a rollover or trailer disconnect. With an articulating hitch, you have more range of motion to keep your trailer aligned with your tow vehicle, even at extreme angles. This is crucial for those who venture into more remote, uneven areas.

• Enhanced Off-Road Capability For adventurers who love the freedom of camping anywhere, articulating hitches are a game-changer. Since they allow for greater movement and a full range of motion, they make traversing rocky, muddy, or hilly areas easier. You’ll feel more confident tackling those wild roads, knowing that your trailer has the freedom to move with the terrain.

Cons of Using an Articulating Hitch for Teardrop Campers

• Increased Cost: One of the most significant drawbacks is the price. Articulating hitches are more expensive than traditional ball hitches, sometimes running several hundred dollars more. For those just starting out with teardrop camping or who don’t frequently off-road, the price might not justify the benefits. However, for those who prefer remote, rugged camping, the investment can pay off in terms of durability and safety.

• Installation and Maintenance Complexity: While most articulating hitches are user-friendly, they are often more complex than standard hitches. This means installation might take longer, and if something goes wrong, repairs could be trickier. You may need

to be more diligent with maintenance to ensure everything stays in top working condition. Additionally, some hitches may require modifications to your trailer or vehicle, which can add time and cost.

• Not Always Necessary for All Trips:

If you frequently camp on paved roads or in established campgrounds, you might not need the full capabilities of an articulating hitch. For those who stick to well-maintained roads, the extra articulation might be overkill. In these scenarios, a traditional hitch could suffice, saving money and effort.

• Heavier Weight: Articulating hitches tend to weigh more than standard ball hitches. While this isn’t always a dealbreaker, for some teardrop owners focused on weight optimization, it could be a minor drawback. The added weight can slightly affect fuel efficiency or the overall weight capacity of your rig.

Comparing Three Popular Articulating Hitches

Here are three popular articulating hitch options to consider:

1.

Lock N' Roll Articulating Hitch

• Pros: The Lock N' Roll system is known for its extreme flexibility and ability to handle rugged terrain. With 360-degree rotation and a full range of lateral movement, it’s ideal for serious off-roaders. The Lock N' Roll hitch also has a unique "pinned" design that adds an extra layer of security.

• Cons: It's one of the more expensive options on the market and may require some custom fitting depending on your trailer setup. Additionally, some users find the installation process a bit complex.

• Best For: Adventurers who frequently find themselves on unmaintained, rugged roads and need maximum articulation.

• Cons: The Max Coupler is slightly heavier than some of its competitors, which may be a downside for those who are mindful of their trailer’s weight. It’s also priced similarly to the Lock N' Roll, meaning it’s a significant investment.

• Best For: Those who prioritize strength and smooth towing, especially on challenging terrain.

3. Cruisemaster DO35 V3 Plus

• Pros: The Cruisemaster DO35 hitch is a popular option in the off-road trailer community in Australia, but they are available in North America. Especially known for its easy-to-use locking system and exceptional durability. It provides solid articulation and has a sleek, heavy-duty design.

2. Max Coupler (Pictured on the blue Timberleaf Pika on page 18)

• Pros: The Max Coupler is another well-known articulating hitch, providing excellent articulation with less side-to-side sway. It’s designed for off-road use and offers a smoother towing experience over rough ground. The hitch is built with solid materials, making it a durable choice.

• Cons: Like other articulating hitches, the Cruisemaster DO35 V3 Plus is on the higher end of the price spectrum. It also requires a bit more effort to maintain over time, with regular greasing needed to keep it functioning smoothly.

• Best For: Off-roaders who value ease of use and a robust build for longterm durability.

It should be noted that Lock N Roll and Cruisemaster offer solutions for those that want to use a weight distribution hitch, which may be required for your tow vehicle even if towing a smaller camper. A general rule of thumb is to consider using a weight distribution hitch when your trailer weighs 50% or more than your tow vehicle. For reference, a Toyota Rav 4 weighs about 3500 lbs and has a towing capacity up to 3500 pounds depending on which engine you choose.

Conclusion

For teardrop camper enthusiasts who love the freedom of camping in remote, rugged locations, an articulating hitch can be a valuable upgrade. The increased flexibility and safety provided by these hitches make them particularly useful for off-road adventures. However, they come with added costs, complexity, and maintenance needs. If your trips regularly take you down two-track or forest service roads, the investment is likely worthwhile. If you stick to more established roads, a traditional hitch may suffice. Ultimately, it depends on your style of travel and how often you seek out off-the-beaten-path camping spots.

Whichever route you choose, making an informed decision based on your specific needs will ensure you’re ready for your next adventure, no matter where the road (or trail) takes you! g

DC - DC Charger

Why we chose the Victron Energy Orion XS BY LISA ADAMS

WHEN IT COMES TO OUTFITTING

a tiny camper for off-grid adventures, one of the most critical decisions you’ll make is how to manage and maintain your power supply. For us, ensuring that our battery remains charged during long drives and extended stays in remote locations is essential. After careful consideration and a deep dive into the available options, we decided to go with the Victron Energy Orion XS 12/12-50A DCDC Charger. Here’s why this particular model stood out to us and why we believe it’s the best fit for our needs.

Configurable Input and Output Currents

One of the standout features of the Victron Energy Orion XS is its configurable input and output currents. This flexibility was a gamechanger for us, especially with our future plans to expand our system. Currently, our setup includes a single 100Ah lithium battery, but we’re planning to add another battery in the near future. The ability to charge at 50 amps if needed was a crucial factor in our decisionmaking process.

Many DC-DC chargers on the market come with fixed output settings, which can limit your options if you decide to upgrade your system down the line. The Victron Energy Orion XS allows you to adjust the input and output currents to match your current setup, and it can easily be reconfigured when you add more capacity. This means that as our power needs grow, our charging system can grow with us, providing peace of mind that we won’t need to invest in a new charger later on.

Five-Year Warranty

When you’re investing in equipment that will be exposed to the rigors of road travel and the elements, a solid warranty is a must. The Victron Energy Orion XS comes with a fiveyear warranty, which is one of the longest in the industry for this type of product. This warranty not only reflects the manufacturer’s confidence in their product but also provides us with assurance that we’re making a reliable, long-term investment.

In contrast, some of the other models we considered had warranties ranging from one to two years. While those products may still be high-quality, the extended warranty offered by Victron gives us added confidence that we won’t encounter issues that could derail our camping trips or require costly replacements sooner than expected.

No Need for an Integrated MPPT Controller

Another major reason we chose the Victron Energy Orion XS was the fact that we already have a solar MPPT controller integrated into our system. Some DC-DC chargers come with a built-in MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) solar controller, which can be a great feature if you’re starting from scratch.

However, since we already invested in a high-quality MPPT controller that efficiently manages our solar input, we didn’t need to pay extra for a charger with this feature.

By choosing the Orion XS, we were able to focus on getting a top-tier DC-DC charger without paying for an integrated component we didn’t need. This decision not only saved us money but also allowed us to optimize our system by keeping each component specialized in its function.

Seamless Integration with Other Victron Components

As seasoned campers, we’ve learned the value of having a well-integrated electrical system. Over time, we’ve gradually built our setup around Victron components, which are known for their reliability, performance, and ease of use. When you have multiple components from the same manufacturer, you benefit from a system that is designed to work together seamlessly. This compatibility reduces the risk of issues arising from mismatched equipment and makes troubleshooting much simpler if something does go wrong.

Choosing the Victron Energy Orion XS was a natural fit for our system. The charger’s integration with our existing Victron components, such as the battery monitor and inverter, ensures that all parts of our electrical system communicate effectively. This level of integration also simplifies the installation process, as the components are designed to connect with minimal fuss.

What’s Next? A Detailed Review of Our Installation Process

Now that we’ve settled on the Victron Energy Orion XS, the next step is to get it installed

in our camper and tow vehicle. In the upcoming issue of our magazine, we’ll be providing a detailed review of the installation process. We’ll walk you through the steps we took, the challenges we encountered, and the solutions we implemented to make the installation as smooth as possible.

We’ll also share insights into how the system performs in real-world conditions. We are currently scrambling to finish the install, publish this issue, and pack prior to our 30 day trek across the northeast US and Canadian Maritimes which will be the perfect test of this charger. Does it live up to our expectations? How does it handle the demands of off-grid camping in different environments? We’ll answer these questions and more, giving you a comprehensive look at how the Victron Energy Orion XS fits into our off-grid lifestyle.

Conclusion

Choosing the right DC-DC charger is crucial for any tiny camper setup. Its configurable input and output currents make it adaptable to future expansions, the five-year warranty offers peace of mind, and its seamless integration (hopefully) with our existing Victron components ensures a reliable and efficient electrical system. We’re excited to get this charger installed and put it to the test on our upcoming adventures. Stay tuned for our in-depth installation review in the next issue! g

Testing Artificial Intelligence (AI) Trip Planners

Do any of these travel tools get it right? BY COOL TEARS STAFF

AS WE CONTINUE our series on AI trip planning, we turn our attention to three different trip planners. Each trip planner has its pros and cons, but we’ll find out if any of them can be used for planning trips in your teardrop or tiny camper.

As per the other tests, we want to plan a week-long trip in our home area so we’ll be able to quickly validate if the AI tool is

hallucinating. As a reminder, a hallucination, in AI terms, occurs when a large language model creates false information. I will ask each AI travel tool to plan a weeklong round trip within 300 miles from home. We’ll tell the tools that we like to kayak, hike, bird watch, take wildlife or nature photos. We travel with pets and we enjoy beautiful gardens, art galleries, and great local food.

Wonderplan AI

Wonderplan AI is an innovative travel planning tool that leverages advanced artificial intelligence to help users create personalized itineraries based on a few preferences. This platform stands out for its ability to adapt to a wide range of travel styles, whether you're looking for an adventurous road trip, a laid-back beach vacation, or a cultural city tour. By inputting your travel interests, preferred pace, and destination, Wonderplan AI generates a detailed plan that includes suggested activities, dining options, and accommodations. Its AI-driven recommendations are updated in real-time, ensuring that your itinerary remains relevant and up-to-date, even as your travel dates approach. The platform also offers integration with various travel services, allowing you to book flights, hotels, and experiences directly through the site, streamlining the entire trip planning process.

One of the key strengths of Wonderplan AI is its focus on creating itineraries that feel uniquely tailored to the user. The platform uses a combination of user-provided data and machine learning algorithms to understand what type of experiences will resonate most with each traveler. For example, if you frequently opt for outdoor activities and local cuisine, Wonderplan AI will prioritize these elements in your itinerary. The result is a travel plan that not only meets logistical needs but also aligns with personal interests and travel goals. Additionally, Wonderplan AI offers a collaborative planning feature, allowing you to share your itinerary with travel companions and receive feedback, making it easier to coordinate group trips.

Wonderplan AI is free and there seems to be no difference in the features if you create an account or not. Wonderplan AI did provide some great ideas for restaurants, state parks with hiking trails, and museums, but I could not figure out how to tell it that I wanted specific things, like kayaking or camping. Every time I tried to use the site to find a place to spend the night, it would open Booking. com in a separate window. While it wouldn’t map a route, it did number the proposed stops along the way so it would be easier to navigate with your own GPS or phone app.

Curiosio

Curiosio is a dynamic travel planning platform designed for those who seek inspiration and personalized travel experiences. It stands out by emphasizing the discovery of unique destinations and activities, making it ideal for travelers who are keen on exploring beyond the well-trodden tourist paths. Curiosio leverages artificial intelligence to curate personalized travel suggestions by analyzing your interests, past travel history, and preferences. This allows the platform to recommend destinations that align with your specific tastes, whether you’re into hidden cultural gems, outdoor adventures, or culinary experiences. What makes Curiosio particularly appealing is its ability to introduce users to places and experiences they might not have considered by selecting if you want a “curious trip or an obscure trip” turning the planning process into an exciting journey of discovery.

One of Curiosio’s most compelling features is its storytelling approach to travel planning.

Rather than just providing a list of places to visit, Curiosio presents travel ideas in a narrative format that helps you visualize and connect with your potential travel experiences. Curioso understands that time and money are often the most important when planning a trip and it allows the user to set a budget range and schedule. This immersive planning method builds anticipation and ensures that your trip is not just a sequence of activities but a coherent and memorable journey. Additionally, Curiosio fosters a community of travelers who can share their experiences, tips, and stories, creating a rich resource for inspiration and practical advice. Whether you’re planning a solo adventure or a family vacation, Curiosio offers a personalized and engaging way to craft your perfect itinerary.

Curiosio excels in discovery and inspiration, making it a great tool if you’re open to exploring new and less-known camping locations. While it may not focus specifically on camping, it can suggest unique destinations, scenic routes, and outdoor activities that align with your interest in teardrop camping. You might discover hidden gems such as lesser-known state parks, scenic byways, or quaint small towns with nearby camping opportunities. When you review an itinerary, everything is “clickable” and it opens a new Wikipedia window. If you’re looking for inspiration for where to camp, Curiosio can introduce you to places you might not have considered. A simple, but incredibly useful feature is that each route is mapped in your choice of Google Maps or Here We Go maps. Of the three tested for this article, Curiosio was the only site that generated a map.

Trip Planner AI

Trip Planner AI is a comprehensive travel planning tool designed to cater to both novice and experienced travelers. The platform offers a straightforward, user-friendly interface that guides users through the trip planning process from start to finish. Trip Planner AI allows users to specify a wide range of preferences, including budget, travel style, and specific interests, such as historical sites, adventure sports, or family-friendly activities. Based on this input, the platform generates a detailed itinerary that includes transportation options, accommodation recommendations, and a dayby-day breakdown of activities. Trip Planner AI also integrates with popular travel services, enabling users to book flights, hotels, and tours directly from the site, simplifying the logistics of trip planning.

What sets Trip Planner AI apart is its focus on optimizing your travel experience by considering factors like time management and cost efficiency. The AI not only suggests activities and destinations but also provides insights into the best times to visit specific locations, how to avoid crowds, and ways to save money without compromising on the quality of your experience. This makes Trip Planner AI particularly useful for those who want to maximize their time and budget while traveling. The platform includes features for real-time updates and adjustments, allowing you to modify your plans on the go if needed, which is invaluable for travelers who prefer a flexible itinerary. Whether you're planning a short weekend getaway or an extended international trip, Trip Planner AI offers the tools and insights to help you craft a wellrounded and enjoyable travel experience.

Trip Planner AI would just not function within my parameters. When I tried to tell it the

locations to consider for my trip, I kept getting an error message that said “At the moment, we can’t generate an itinerary for Grand Rapids, Michigan.” While it did not work for this test, it did provide some excellent ideas and suggested times for our upcoming trip to the northeast. For a camping trip in our immediate vicinity, Trip Planner AI failed miserably.

In summary, all three platforms can assist in travel planning, but none are geared directly towards camping so you would need to determine your own camping locations.

If I was planning a different type of vacation, I would consider trying each of these. A bonus perk is that each is free to use and they each shine in their own way. Wonderplan AI offers the most detailed itinerary customization, Curiosio provides unique destination ideas, finding hidden gems, and Trip Planner AI focuses on optimizing the logistics and overall efficiency of your trip by determining when the best time to visit attractions is. g
