About Coonara Community House Neighbourhood House, Community House or Adult Learning Centre, whatever the name, these places are the heart of the Knox community. More recently referred to as Learn Local organisations, we provide social, educational and recreational activities within a welcoming and supportive environment. There are five Learn Local organisations in Knox. Coonara Community House offers a large number of qualifications in Community Services, Children’s Services, Leisure & Health and Disability up to Diploma level. Subsidised computer classes run each term. Coonara offers workshops on gardening, cooking and getting ‘back to basics’. Short courses provide pathways to employment and build learner confidence. Other programs include a food garden, a community newspaper and many volunteering opportunities. Please note that in the interests of asthma sufferers, Coonara is a perfume and after-shave free zone. How to enrol Enrolments in Coonara courses are confirmed by payment of course fees or the arrangement of a payment plan. Coonara accepts EFTPOS, credit cards, cheque, cash and direct payment into our bank account. In person between 9.00am and 4.00pm Monday to Friday at 22 Willow Rd Upper Ferntree Gully

Courses require minimum numbers to proceed. If we cancel a class you will receive a full refund. If you withdraw from a class at least 48 hours prior to the commencement you will receive a refund less a $10 administration fee. Within 48 hours of the class commencement no refund can be given. Concession fees apply to some courses for those on pensions and health care cards. The refund policy for accredited training differs from the above and is advertised on the enrolment form and our website.

Nationally accredited training Coonara Community House is a Registered Training Organisation approved to deliver training in Nationally Recognised Qualifications, in 2015. Individual career counselling sessions of 30 mins or one hour available with an experienced and qualified counsellor. $54 per 30 mins or $99 per hour. Please phone for a booking. The Victorian Training Guarantee provides all eligible Victorian citizens or permanent residents with subsidised fees. To be eligible you must be upskilling - enrolling in a qualification at a higher level than any other completed qualifications that you hold. Students under 20 years of age are exempted. Computers Computers for the timid (15INTCOM) This is a beginner’s course for those who may require a supportive environment to develop confidence. Learn to type and save simple documents, insert pictures and manage files. Introduction to ipads (15INTIPADS) This short course will cover the features of the ipad and demonstrate how to use it to access the Internet and a range of social media tools and apps. Thursdays 9.30am – 12.00pm 5th February – 26th March $70 or $60 concession* Social media and digital literacy for work and study (15DIGLIT) This course investigates different types of social media and gadgets. It includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and apps, Pinterest, blogging and Linkedin. Fridays 9.30am – 12.00pm 6th February – 27th March $70 or $60 concession* Social media for your business (15DIGLIT) This course focuses on the use of emarketing to promote your business. Each week Marina will introduce a social media tool and help you identify their potential for your business; blogging, enewletters, YouTube and Google, Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and putting it all together. Tuesday 6.30pm – 9.30pm 17th February – 24th March $70 or $60 concession* Internet and Email (15INTEMAIL) This short course is for those who are new computer users and lack the confidence to access the Internet and send and receive emails. Computers Digital seniors classes Are you a senior aged 65 years plus? Would you like to receive help to use your own laptop, tablet or iPad in a small group? Classes are available for $2 per person and will be held at local libraries, The Community Space at Knox City Shopping Centre and at the Knox Neighbourhood Houses. Phone 9758 7081 for more information. Email newsletters using mail chimp Mailchimp is a free email newsletter software program that can help you email the right people at the right time. Send automated emails based on customer behaviour and preferences and receive reports on performance of your email campaign. Ideal for business or community groups wanting to produce effective and timely communication with members and clients. Wednesday 12.30pm – 3.30pm 4th March $30 members or $35 non members Online searching for genealogy Jo will introduce you to the online search sites and subscriptions that could get you started with family history research. Tuesdays 1.00pm – 3.15.pm 10th March - 24th March $80 members or $85 non members Google makes life easier Karen will introduce you to the amazing world of Google tools that could make your online life and work so much easier. Prepare to be amazed. Career preparation Preparation for work in hospitality (15PREHOSP) Would you like to improve your cooking and food service skills and learn more about potential careers in hospitality? This practical course will teach you basic food preparation and serving skills in a community kitchen environment. Includes safe food handling, preparation of simple meals from a range of cultures and food service. Conducted by a qualified chef. Thursdays 9.30am – 1.30pm 26th February – 18th June $140 or $125 concession (includes tuition, amenities and materials)

Winter vs Summer pruning with Pete the Permie Focus on the advantages of pruning at the correct time to control disease, fruit and tree size. Lots of tips and tricks to reduce the workload. Sunday 10.00am – 4.00pm 18th January $100 BYO lunch, boots and appropriate clothing for the weather

Gully gardeners A group of people interested in gardening meet at Coonara on the first Thursday of each month from 2.00pm – 3.30pm to plan and organize guest speakers and outings. If you are interested in participating please call Coonara. Back to basics

Preparation for work in community services (15PRECOM) Are you considering a career in community services but not confident to return to study or unsure of which field would suit you best? This short course will introduce you to the range of careers within the community services sector and provide you with the study skills to embark on entry level training in your chosen field. Tuesday 9.30am – 3.00pm 10th February – 28th April $115 or $105 concession (includes tuition, amenities and materials)

Biodynamic compost making and soils for trees with Pete the Permie Fruit trees do need a certain compost. Learn to make the correct compost to feed these and your veggies for a year. Learn how to never turn a heap again just build it and wait to use it in as little as 8 weeks. Saturday 10.00am – 4.00pm 7th March $100 BYO lunch, boots and clothing appropriate for the weather

Hobby & recreation Mosaic letterbox Decorate a cheap metal letter box with mosaic tiles to make it something special for your garden. Bring your own letterbox all other materials supplied. Saturday 12.00pm – 4.00pm 21st February and Saturday 12.00pm – 2.00pm 28th February $90 members or $100 non members Prana meditation Suzie Szabo is a professional energy healer and meditation facilitator with over 12 years of experience conducting classes. Suzie will share with you many forms of meditation as she gently guides you on a deep healing journey within. Participants will be sitting on chairs. Not recommended for people under 17. Do you or someone in your family have a food allergy or intolerance? Coonara has been funded by the Knox Council Community Development Fund to run a series of workshops and activities to assist the community to develop skills and responses to these allergies.
