“The small and friendly village of Sadali rises about 750 meters above sea level, at the edge of the plateau of the same name. Sadali is part of Barbagia of Seulo. Barbagia is a mostly mountainous region and what characterizes it is the variety and the spectacular wild and picturesque landscapes often unique, well that justify who he called "island within an island “. The territory of Sadali covers an area of 4988 hectares. Although it was always a modest center, it also has its own story; a long and distant history that is lost in the depths of the centuries. The legend says that the village was founded by a goatherd who settled with his flock in a place protected from frost , sunny and full of water and pasture, which would later took the name of "Mesu Idda". Well being, he invited relatives and friends to move to the site giving rise to a new community that would take the name of "S'aili", i.e. "the hut kids". According to others (Marcato C.), the name would be of pre-Roman origin, which contrasts with that of Spano that it derives from the Phoenician Sad + El, i.e. "help, great fortitude" . Cut off from the course of Flumendosa, in the winter it remained isolated for several weeks due to lack of bridges, its economic and social communications, mostly narrowed to the remaining part of the Barbagia and Ogliastra, of which he shared customs and traditions. Only in 1753, when Nurri bridge was built, Sadali was able to establish more regular relationships with capital. This isolation may have been the cause of his delayed demographic trends; in 1678 it did not exceed 59 fires, i.e. households, in 1688 there were 170 inhabitants and in 1751 it did not exceed 320. in 1842, with the event of the railway, it doubled its consistency population reaching 680 inhabitants and in 1901 were 829 souls, after which the number has been growing until the '50s, hence it began to decline slowly until the last census results, where we are about 970 inhabitants. Sadali has always been known as the water’s village because everywhere numerous springs flow, and the same nickname of its inhabitants is "Sadilesus abbausu", i.e. "Watery Sadali's inhabithants''. BRIEF GEOGRAPHICAL NOTES The territory of Sadali borders to the north with Seulo, with Nurri south, east with Seui and Esterzili, west with Villanovatulo. The highest altitude reached in the territory is of nearly 900 meters in "Sigarai" and the lowest, on Lake Flumendosa, touches the 274 meters. It belongs to the province of Cagliari, which is 95 km away. Its territory is mostly rocky, marked by Simulated aerial view in the territory of Sadali, based on Google Earth. dolomitic peaks, which give a fantastic look surrounded by picturesque and deep valleys where flow various waterways. The surrounding area is characterized by forests of holm oak, cork oak and mixed with alder, yew, holly, maple to which are added the conifers. Stretches of the Mediterranean are notable, among which predominate thecistus, rosemary, arbutus, mastic, heather, lentisk etc. In the mild parts prevail olive, myrtle, and milkweed.
“THE THREE FAIRIES” COOPERATIVE History
4
HISTORY There is no doubt that the plateau was inhabited in prenuragic and nuragic periods, which is proved by the finds in the cave "Is Janas" and in several other locations. Of Nuragic age we can distinguish a dozen "Nuraghi" not in a perfect state of preservation, which are differentiated by their geographic location and their function for the civil, military, religious and funerary art. There are two types of "Nuraghi": mono towered and complex. The first group includes the following: Nurassolu, Funtana 'e Longina, Taccu Piccinnu, S'Axiri, Srabassei; belong to the second group: Pala 'e Nuraxi, Istria and Accodulassu. Related to the Punic Age, in the territory of Sadali were found some potteries, while the Roman period was due to the ruins of the church of St. Lucifer, who in the original structure served as a thermal building. Vase belonging to “Monte Claro” culture, “Is Janas” Cave In the Middle Ages it belonged to District of Cagliari and was included in the Barbagia of Seulo "curatoria" (administrative subdivision of Sardinian Districts), who shared the story until 1258, when it passed to the District of Gallura and remained there until 1297, when it passed to the dominion of Pisa. This situation did not last long, in fact, in 1323 Boniface VIII granted the investiture of the regnum et Sardiniae Corsicae to James II, thus began the Catalan Aragonese domination that lasted until 1479, when it took over the Spanish rule. In 1604 it was incorporated into the Duchy of Mandas until 1686, and in 1720, following the Treaty of London as well as the rest of Sardinia passed to the Savoy . Ecclesiastically Sadali, one time, depended on the headquarter of the village of Suelli, suppressed in 1420, this diocese was united to that of Cagliari in 1824 and that of Lanusei. THE PARLANCE OF SADALI The Sardinian language has very ancient births, pre Latin, probably linked to the first words spoken by the original inhabitants of Sardinia whose traces of presence on the island date back to the Lower Paleolithic (Perfugas). It belongs to the Indo-European languages but it is considered autonomous systems dialect area Italic, Gallic and Hispanic and therefore classified as a language in its own right in the neo - Latin panorama. However this proto Sardinian language has undergone significant changes following the invasions of the Phoenicians (limited to the coastal areas), the Carthaginians, the Romans and above (that with the Latin language defiled much the original Sardinian language), the minor invasion of the Vandals and Byzantines, finally that of the Spanish. The Sardinian language is divided into two linguistic groups located in different locations: The logudorese north-central Sardinia and Campidanese central-southern Sardinia. The parlance of Sadali presents linguistic affinities of either group, but with variables and linguistic differences with the neighboring villages. To make sure that you keep the Sardinian language sadalese least in its present form, through interviews with elders of the land, we are rebuilding a dictionary with various themes; among which the most important is the place names, accompanied by a map of the place names, as many of them have kept the proto Sardinian origin.

“IS JANAS” CAVE The cave "Is Janas" has unique features of its kind, it develops as a 280 m long corridor. The cave opens with a rectangular entrance, surrounded by a lush forest of holm oaks. It is a cave of karst formation, has a constant temperature of 14 ° and a moisture which reaches peaks of 100%. It is of considerable importance for the archaeological finds in it and for the wildlife that stays in it, including this that we mention: the cave salamander, endemism Sardinian or "hidromantes imperialis"; the "ovobathysciola gestroi" which is part of the family of beetles troglobites (who live only inside the caves); a butterfly, which is called "Autographa Gamma" and it is always endemic of Sardinia and finally the bat, very common horseshoe. Among the archaeological finds there are remains of pottery shards and bowls forged and used during periods of Ozieri and Monte Claro cultures in 3000 AC about (Sardinian Neolithic). “THE THREE FAIRIES” COOPERATIVE Sites : caves
“MARGIANI GHIANI" CAVE It is a cave with a development of 65 meters and an altitude gap of 22 metres; it looks like a large dormitory, divided by thin and extended blades of rock into three rooms, each with special features: the first one, of large dimension, presents a vault high about 18 meters, a length of 40 meters and a width of over 10 meters, connected to the outside through a well of 14 meters in which an iron staircase is installed. The second room is connected to the first by a steep flight of fine sand, with beautiful concretions. The third room is full of dense concretions threadlike, tubs full of water, rounded stalagmites and many other speleothems. Currently, the cave is open to the public only during the event ‘’Open Monuments’’, thanks to the caving group GGO

“THE THREE FAIRIES” COOPERATIVE Sites : caves
“SU STAMPU ‘E SU TURNU” (lit. = hole of the lathe) It is a triple karst phenomenon: sinkhole, cave and karst spring with waterfall and pond. This karst formation has developed in carbonate rocks of the Jurassic plateaus (“Heels”). The cavity originated by karst dissolution with vertical development. The surface erosion of the river on Longufresu has cut this cavity by filling it completely with water, then that originated at the base of the cave a vertical pipe of circular cross section connected to the outside, thus acting as a karst spring.

I SITI - LE GROTTE
CHASM “SA UCCA MANNA” It is a sinkhole - resurgent accessible with some difficulty during the dry season due to the scarcity of water. The presence of water is the most important feature of this cavity, which collects the waters of the springs that flow into the country and those of the ''Procargiu'' stream and "Riu Alinus", which emerge at about 150 meters away, then they head towards the "Sadali" stream, flowing in "Betili" stream and in the Flumendosa lake. The importance of this cave is not so much linked to its aesthetic value, landscaping or caving, which is also very high, given the presence of large concretions and stalactites long and intact present throughout the development of the cave itself, as to its function hydrogeological collector and conveyor waters. For this reason can be considered a geological significance. Length

“THE THREE FAIRIES COOPERATIVE Sites : the waterfall and watermill
10
SAINT VALENTINE WATERFALL In the old village we can admire the beautiful waters of the Saint Valentine waterfall, natural waterfall about seven meters high, fed by the waters of the resurgence "Funtana Manna". It is a perennial waterfall of enchanting beauty and particular to be constantly covered by maidenhair fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris) that surrounds with her branches light and delicate, similar to the foliage of Venus, goddess of beauty, which gives its name to the species. The waterfall is also unique in Sardinia, located within the village.
WATERMILL The old water mill, fed by the waters of the Saint Valentine waterfall, is located in the old village. There were eight mills in the old town, this is the only one who managed to recover. Built in the second half of 1600 at the behest of a noble sadalese, The Regent Locci, were a major input in the economy of the agropastoral Sadali period because they went to replace the hard and heavy work of donkeys.
“THE THREE FAIRIES COOPERATIVE Sites : the churches
11
SAINT VALENTINE CHURCH The church of Saint Valentine was built in two distinct periods: the first structure dates back to the fifth and sixth centuries AD (400500): this was revealed thanks to last restoration works carried out in 1996, when under the current sanctuary was found a Roman kiln used for baking bricks, completely intact in its interior and equally disfigured outside due to bad weather. The second plant comprising a larger structure, dates from the first half of the fourteenth century (1300), presents the Gothic style, as can be seen from the large arched doorway and pointed arches of the interior. Inside the parish has a nave with six side chapels of which the most interesting from the standpoint of historical and architectural Assumption is that it was built on the orders of Salvatore Locci at the turn of XVII - XVIII century (late 1600/1 1700). Finally in 1960 it was added to the right side of the facade the high bell tower and the last chapel on the corresponding side. SAINT HELENA CHURCH The church dedicated to Saint Helena is located in the east of the plateau of Sadali, is a singlenave church, the first of which is attributable to the eleventh century. Built of local travertine, there are clear traces of the Romanesque style; the original facade remains an ancient walled door today, while the apse is partly destroyed and gives way to current input.

BARBAGIA’S WATERS ECO MUSEUM Barbagia’s waters of Sadali Ecomuseum is located in the geographic area of southern Barbagia. It is an integrated system of cultural, natural and environmental resources and it sees the population involved in its creation, which actively contributes to the research, preservation and promotion of cultural and natural heritage. The eco-museum is not a well-defined physical place, but an expression of life in what is the daily life of the inhabitants, in an environment that interweaves nature, culture and traditions; spaces and places to visit, communication of their own history and identity; it aims to raise awareness and bring out, to the eyes of visitors, local peculiarities understood as daily activities through direct contact.

13
THE ECO-MUSEUM ITINERARIES The eco-museum of the waters of Barbagia is divided into two different regions: one linked to the urban context and a suburban context; in the urban context are been identified three itineraries related to the water world and what was the primordial economy of this center: WATERWAYS, PANORAMAS AND VIEWS OF DOWNTOWN and GARDENS AND CANALS. The nature has well served this place: waterfalls, perennial springs and fertile lands, where the nomadic shepherds in the past decided to settle. Water is a great resource that the people have always treasured, already in 1600: thanks to a noble of Sadali, Don Salvatore Locci, water mills were built (one of which can still be visited), which replaced the hard work of donkey and until the early 1900s, always water drove the machines for the processing of the briar-root, material used to make pipes, and still the water that flows in the historic center feeds plantations and is used by women who as before, go to the wash to do "lissia" (a mix of ash and water to wash clothes). In the mysterious forest of ''Margiani Ghia- “Funtana Manna” spring ni'' three nature trails twist and turn, identified in suburban area: THE PATH OF THE CHARCOAL, FAIRIES PATH and CERAXIA. The itineraries set in a karst environment and surrounded by dense vegetation rich of endemic species and Mediterranean scrub, are placed where even today there are signs of human presence and activity of the recent past with the presence of lime kilns, used until the seventies for the production of environmentally friendly material for the construction of houses, charcoal kilns and settlements of shepherds with the presence of huts. In the great forest there are karst importances: the waterfall ''SU STAMPU 'E SU TURNU", , the cave "SU FOSSU DE MARGIANI GHIANI'' and the mysterious and fascinating cave ''IS JANAS".
