A Brief History of The Nutcracker ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’ is a classic Christmas tale originally written in 1816 by German author E. T. A. Hoffman. In 1892, the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, along with choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov turned the story into the ballet ‘The Nutcracker’. The Nutcracker first premiered on 18th December 1892 at the Mariinky Theatre in St Petersburg, Russia and was widely considered a failure by public and critics alike!
Alissa Armes-Green as The Sugar Plum Fairy
In German tradition, the Nutcracker dolls resemble toy soldiers and symbols of good luck, scaring away bad spirits. An average Nutcracker doll is made of around 60 individual pieces! The Nutcracker is the most-frequently performed ballet in the world and, for some ballet companies, makes up 40% of their yearly revenue.

Behind the Christmas Magic...
It’s snowing on stage again and the cast enjoy every minute!
A Creative Powerhouse As the Co-op Juniors head into a glittering 14th year at Snape Maltings, the scale of their annual Christmas production continues to reach dizzying heights. This year’s show remains the largest amateur production in the UK as they welcome a staggering 100,000th audience member to their family friendly spectacle. We travel into The Realm of Christmas alongside a cast of over 100 talented young performers, live orchestra, and a huge backstage operation working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring this magical story to life. The journey begins in their Ipswich headquarters where the group has its rehearsal studios, production workshops and costume stores. The Co-op Juniors are a creative powerhouse, producing three major stage productions each year and offering a well-established Theatre Academy for the Ipswich area. The company also hosts a flourishing hire business in costumes, props, staging and sound equipment.

Once Upon a December Lucy Allen heads up the creative team this year to cook up a festive treat: “I’m delighted to direct and choreograph this year’s Spectacular! It’s wonderful to be part of such an ambitious production and exciting to play an important role in the development of these talented young people. With a host of interesting characters and a strong festive narrative, The Nutcracker provides the perfect story for a joyful and exciting Christmas show which I hope will be enjoyed by audiences and cast alike.”

Made of Clockwork Set designer Oliver Brett is no stranger to ambitious projects having directed, choreographed and designed the Juniors’ recent production of Barnum earlier this year inside the Circus Fantasia big top. Oliver says “The design process for the Christmas Spectacular! presents challenge and opportunity in equal measure – the scale of the show is enormous! With plenty of colour, Scale model of the Christmas Spectacular! Nutcracker set and a huge dose of festive sparkle, this year’s show will immerse audiences into a fantasy world of Edwardian toys, childhood memories and Christmas magic”.

March of the Toy Soldiers Behind the curtain, an army of volunteers stitch and sew all year round to prepare for the Juniors’ annual Christmas show. Resident Director Jeannie Ingram and Costume Supervisor Cilla Tricker oversee the creation of hundreds of costumes for each show, working with the rest of the creative team to bring the performers to life. “We make a large amount of the costumes ourselves” explains Jeannie. “Each musical number is different and we design unique pieces to fit the mood and style of the show. We creatively re-purpose previous costumes with accessories for a new breath of life!” The Juniors have an extensive collection of chorus and principal character costumes with over 30,000 in stock in their warehouse at Paul’s Road, Ipswich. School and theatre groups from across the country make use of these costumes for their own productions; from Cats to Beauty and the Beast, Oliver! to The Sound of Music and more Christmas outfits than you can imagine!
