Rooftop Bar, Bab-al-shams, Dubai

Head up to the roof in the late afternoon to catch the magical sunset, then sink back and enjoy a few drinks under the stars whilst enjoying live music and dancers.

The land of never-ending winters holds the bragging rights for the world's first ice bar, established in 1994. Located above the Arctic Circle, it's situated inside a luxurious ice hotel, where you can sip on cocktails or Champagne (out of glasses made entirely of ice) and dance on a floor made of snow, with people who travel here from all over the world. Every year artists redesign the bar with a different theme, using 40 to 50 tonnes of ice blocks harvested from the Torne River. What to order: A Gray Wolf - Absolut Vodka, lingonberry juice and fresh lime.

What to order: Experience the exoticism of the Souk with a Sumac Sour cocktail.

Alux Caverna Lounge, Mexico This 18000 year old geological formation is the largest cave bar in the world and a mystical backdrop for your evening cocktail. Make sure you explore the many grottos and caverns, underground river and stalactites as you take the loop through the cave before returning to the chandelier lit lounge for drinks.

The Water and Wind Bar, Vietnam

The Bucket List Bar, Bondi

Situated at the centre of a lake in the Binh Doung Province, this thatched bamboo dome works in harmony with wind energy and the water from the lake to create a naturally cool ventilated space. Stepping-stones lead across the reflection and into the massive thatched hut where lamps adorn the walls to create the perfect Zen hideout for a few reflective beverages.

It seems fitting that we should end our bucket list with the iconic bar of the same title, located in our very own backyard. This Bondi Hipster haven by the sea has long been famous for buckets of beer, Pimm’s and prawns (different buckets) whilst offering front row views of the most beautiful beach in the world.

THE OFFICIAL C A N B E R R A DAY WI N E

NAME THAT WINE! If Canberra was a wine, what would it be called? That was the question Local Liquor asked Canberrans in a competition to name their official limited edition Canberra Day Wine, created in collaboration with leading local winemaker Nick O’Leary. Hundreds of names poured in and each one reviewed. But one winner ultimately stood out.

JUNE 2016 COORDINATE.COM.AU

“Walt ‘n’ Marion” was the winning name submitted by Bernie Yates, who looked to Marion and Walter Burley Griffin, the architects of Canberra, for his inspiration. “Being a wine to commemorate Canberra Day, a celebration of the official naming of the National Capital in 1913, I thought that a name that reminded us of the contribution that Walter and Marion Griffin made to this wonderful place we live in would be right,” says Bernie. As well as winning the naming rights, Bernie helped design the label with local advertising agency, Coordinate and attended lunch with three friends at Nick O’Leary’s winery for an afternoon of wine tasting, food and ‘barrel’ sampling. “Nick O’Leary is one of the Canberra region’s young guns, with an award-

winning reputation,” says Bernie. “So it was a real privilege to be able to taste the different barrels and contribute suggestions for their blending in making the final wine.” As well as seeing his winning name printed on over 6,000 bottles to be sold at all Local Liquor stores in the ACT and NSW, Bernie chose a local charity that would receive $1 from every bottle sold, and received a year’s supply of the Canberra Day wine (that’s 52 bottles!) Local Liquor Supplier and Group Brands Manager Craig Hazelton says that creating the wine and the competition was all about reinforcing their commitment to keeping things local. “As a Canberra-based group, we wanted to create something that would really engage the community whilst supporting our local wine industry,” he says. “People in the Canberra region are very wine knowledgeable so the competition really resonated with them.” So successful was the response, that Local Liquor will look to continue the competition annually, partnering with a different winemaker each year. So if you’ve got a winning name up your sleeve, be sure to make a submission. In the meantime, you can pick up a bottle of the Walt ‘n’ Marion Shiraz from any Local Liquor, Liquor & Co and Supabarn stores for just $27.99.

Neil McGuigan, Chief Winemaker and CEO

SOVINO AUTUMN 2017

ONE AUSTRALIAN WINERY STANDS ALONE. International Winemaker of the Year for a world record 4th time. In November 2016, McGuigan Wines entered the history books after being named International Winemaker of the Year for a record fourth time at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London. Having previously won the title in 2009, 2011 and 2012, the fourth award has taken the Hunter Valley winery into new territory, as it became the first winery in the world to win the award four times in the competition’s 47-year history. As the 2017 vintage looms around Australia, we sat down with Neil McGuigan, Chief Winemaker for McGuigan Wines to discuss his incredible win and what lies ahead for Australian wine.

Congratulations on your incredible win, Neil – did you think you could do it for the fourth time? Thank you – I’m very humbled by the award. I believe these awards aren’t just good for us but great for Australian wine in general. We had a purple patch from 2009 to 2012, and I had my doubts as to whether we’d do it again, but thankfully our commitment to making quality wine has carried us through to the fourth time. Is this something you set out to achieve when you joined the business? When I first re-joined the business I put a challenge out to the McGuigan winemaking team, which was more about creating true, iconic wines for our brand than winning this particular award. The process allowed us to change the way we made wine every day; we had the ambition to craft wines of the highest calibre and then channelled the energy and focus to be on quality at every step of the process. I believe this process of making the wine the hero has led us to where we are today as four-time International Winemaker of the Year.

What is it about Australian wine that attracts people to it?

Which of your wines would you suggest people buy to drink now?

I’d have to say generosity of fruit – our raw materials (the grapes) are arguably the best in the world, made better by the climate in which we operate.

Our McGuigan Shortlist range continually over delivers at its price point - we receive this feedback almost every week. Our 2016 Shortlist Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills is always a crowd favourite, as is our Shortlist Shiraz from the Barossa Valley. For an everyday drink, our BIN range is drinking superbly!

How is the 2017 vintage looking? We’re right in the thick of it in the Hunter Valley! The season in the Hunter has never been kinder thanks to beautiful, dry conditions. The grapes look fantastic; last week we picked our Hunter Chardonnay which is set to knock socks off this year.

However, the other regions across Australia are actually ripening much slower than normal. We don’t expect the inland districts to start vintage until early February, with the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and the South East of Australia probably a month behind where we were last year. That said, all is looking good at present but there is still a long way to go.

FOUR TIME INTERNATIONAL WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR.

The new T’Gallant A range of lively Australian sparkling wines from T’Gallant, including Chardonnay Pinot Noir, Prosecco and Pink Moscato. T’Gallant’s fresh look and feel will gradually roll out across the entire range of wines, taking cues from T’Gallant’s pioneering and free-spirited origins. In the 1990s, T’Gallant founders went against advice to introduce and champion Pinot Gris and Girgio in Australia on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula after having fallen in love with the variety in Europe (Gris and Grigio are the same grape variety, typically made in different styles). It is this pioneering approach and self-belief that has set T’Gallant apart. Today, T’Gallant has continued a tradition of producing fresh, food-friendly Australian wines with lively personalities.

An introduction to our varietals Prosecco is an Italian white grape varietal. The main ingredient of Bellini cocktails, Prosecco is the fastest growing sparkling varietal in Australia. Proseccos are typically refreshing, dry and citrusy with a hint of sweet flavour. Chardonnay Pinot Noir is a classic sparkling wine blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. The white Chardonnay grape gives the wine its finesse and aging ability, while the red Pinot Noir adds structure and fruit. Moscato is a sweet and floral wine, produced in both still and sparkling styles, with a refreshing sweet flavour. T’Gallant Pink Moscato is made from Frontignac grapes which are pink in colour and which give the wine its blush hue.
