SOVINO WINTER 2019

FEATURE

HERE'S TO YOUR WEALTH ways to invest in alcohol

These days, connoisseurs look further than their favourite tasting notes when picking their favourite drink. In fact, some of them are more interested in its appreciating value than in appreciating its taste. Let’s face it, liquor has always been and still is a viable option for astute investors. One of the reasons for this is the common theory that investing in so-called sin products will always be profitable. This idea is bolstered by the notion that people drink and smoke more excessively when the stock market tanks, thus further boosting sin stock sales. This theory doesn’t always hold water (or wine for that matter), but it does have some merit. So, while most of us would never be able to buy a wine farm or a distillery, there are many creative ways to diversify your portfolio by investing in alcohol.

The vintage advantage If you know your Grange’s from your casks, a good wine collection is still a noteworthy investment. But with all the research, proper storing requirements and intricate details it entails, it’s probably more like a lucrative hobby. But if you get it right, you could be like the collector who sold his 73-year-old bottle of 1945 Romanee-Conti French Burgundy for a whopping USD558,000 in October 2018. That’s USD100,000 per glass, making it the most expensive bottle of wine to sell at an auction to date. According to Jamie Ritchie, worldwide head of Sotheby’s Wine, this new world record is proof that the demand for wine and spirits of exceptional quality is at an all-time high, and that global collectors are willing to go the extra mile to acquire the rarest bottles of any kind. On local fronts, investors aren’t doing badly either. In January 2019, a single bottle of Grange Hermitage 1951 has broken auction records and earned itself the title of Australia’s most expensive wine when it sold for roughly $80,000. So, if you have one of the 20 bottles that are still believed to be around, you’ve got the gold. It’s not just bottled wine that’s a good investment. More and more investors are turning to good collectible whiskies. But like wines, you need to know your whisky and you need to understand the rules.

A young approach to maturing Scotch For many years, whisky maturation has delivered excellent returns, but historically only distillers and blenders could benefit. In 2015, Whiskyinvestdirect changed this by allowing private investors to buy quality whiskies at wholesale prices. The whisky is stored in the barrel in the distiller’s bonded warehouse while it’s still maturing. When you decide to sell, you’ll receive a transparently competitive price from other users and industry bidders. According to whiskyinvestdirect.com, the mature whisky bought back to date has realised an average annualised return of over 10% after costs.

3

Stock up on alcohol stocks From beer stocks and spirit makers to more indirect approaches like restaurants or exchange traded funds, the Australian Stock Exchange offers a range of stocks for a wide variety of investing palates. And the beauty of these stocks, is that every time you buy your favourite bottle or slab, you’re contributing to your own equity, even if it’s just slightly.

4

Crowdfunding for crowdpleasers Crowdfunding is becoming increasingly popular for smaller distilleries and breweries to raise the funds they need to build the brands we love. There are essentially two types of crowdfunding – rewardbased crowdfunding requires people to support the endeavour through a monetary donation, for which they receive something in return, usually in the form of a gift. It’s a once-off transaction between the campaign backer and the company and not really an investment as such. Equity Crowdfunding on the other hand, sells you equity ownership in the company. The concept has been around for several years and breweries have been some of the most successful campaigns run. The most well-known of these is BrewDog, the Scottish craft beer juggernaut who pioneered the idea of equity-based crowdfunding for breweries with their first Equity For Punks campaign in 2009, and went on to build a company valued at over $1b - a lot of equity to share between their 55,000 Equity Punks. In Australia, the crowdfunding laws have only been passed recently and there’s a lot of potential here. It’s relatively easy, relatively affordable and anyone can invest, but keep in mind, like with most investments, there are some obvious risks attached.

Know your limits Whether you’re drinking it or investing in it, it’s important to know your limits when it comes to alcohol. These alternative investments should only make up a small portion of your overall investing activity, supplementing your existing portfolio rather than dominating it.

METHOD STEP 1 Cook sliced chorizo over medium heat until crisp and oil has come out of sausage. STEP 2 Add beef and cook for 5 minutes, or until brown. STEP 3 Stir in spices then add jar of sauce, beans and chilli sauce. STEP 4 Bring to the boil, turn down heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

STEP 5 Serve with rice and top with a dollop of sour cream or yoghurt and sprinkle some grated cheese and chopped coriander on it. STEP 6 Pour yourself and your guests a glass and enjoy.

CALABRIA THE YEARLING THREE BRIDGES CABERNET DURIF SAUVIGNON Durif is a red wine originally sourced from France. The berries produced are small and concentrated and performs best in warm, sunny areas and that is why Calabria Wines has so much success with it. The wine produced is full flavoured with intense colour & high tannins & will age well.

This vintage release of our Yearling Cabernet Sauvignon is made to present lively, fruity aromas with a soft, supple structure. This vibrant yet approachable wine is perfect for enjoying now. A vibrant palate, displaying dark berries, vanilla and smooth chocolatey tannins. A balanced, youthful wine with elegant length on the palate.

LITTLE GIANT SHIRAZ The Barossa Valley component shows typical plum, red liquorice, chocolate and mocha characters whilst the addition of the spicier, dark fruit of the cooler Eden Valley has added lift, interest and freshness. This is a contemporary Barossa Shiraz having spent maturation time in older oak adding subtle vanilla and match stick nuance but also softens it whilst maintaining freshness and vibrancy.

SOVINO WINTER 2019

MEET BRANDY'S SEXIEST SIBLING. COGNAC. It’s been heralded by the great Napoleon himself and appreciated by the original James Bond, but there’s more than you think to this resurgent French spirit. IT’S NOT EASY TO BECOME A COGNAC

GLASSIST FOR A REASON

Cognac producers must adhere to a very strict set of rules. Unlike other brandies, it must be made from specific grapes, distilled twice (but only between November and March each time) and aged for at least two years in Tronçais or Limousin oak barrels.

Tulip-shaped or balloon glasses are usually recommended to capture cognac’s subtle aromas. Among other practical reasons, the shape is designed to channel heat from your hands to the drink to help achieve the optimal temperature of 15 to 18°C.

IT TAKES A LOT OF WINE TO MAKE A COGNAC When distilled, 10 litres of white wine make 1 litre of Cognac.

THE FRENCH DON’T PARTICULARLY LIKE IT Only about 3% of Cognac is consumed in France. The rest is exported.

CRAZY FOR COGNAC! The most expensive shot of cognac was bought for HKD68,000 (almost USD10,000) at the InterContinental Hong Kong on 9 November 2016. This shot of cognac came from a bottle of 1858 Cuvée Leonie.Henri IV, this drop is one of the rarest Cognac’s in the world.

EXPENSIVE TASTE At USD2,000,000 a bottle, Henri IV Dudognon Heritage Cognac Grande Champagne comes bottled in crystal. It features 24-karat gold dipped with Sterling platinum and features 6,500 certified cut diamonds as decoration. it´s filled with 100 cl. Ultra-Premium Cognac Grande Champagne, aged in barrels for more than 100 years to produce an alcohol content of 41%.

THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF THE ABBREVIATIONS You don’t need to have FOMO when it comes to deciphering XO’s. These abbreviations simply denote the categories of Cognac, ranked by age, expense and quality. In essence, no-one would blink if you mix your VS (“Very Special”) Cognac with water or soda, but by the time you get to XO (“Extra Old”) and there thousands of dollars per bottle price tag, drinking it any way but neat would be a tragedy.

CANBERRA CRAFT CANBERRA BREWERIES HAVE MASTERED THE CRAFT OF, WELL, CRAFT BEER AND ARE PRODUCING SOME OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY. IN 2018, 11 OF THE ACT’S BEERS WERE RATED AMONG THE TOP 100 IN AUSTRALIA. IN FACT, DRINKERS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY PLACED SEVEN OF OUR BREWS IN THE TOP 25 – AN ASTOUNDING RESULT FOR CANBERRA’S MODEST-SIZED BREWING INDUSTRY. HERE ARE A FEW OF THE NAMES WORTH MENTIONING:

BENTSPOKE BREWING COMPANY These guys are consistently taking the craft beer world by storm. Their Crankshaft India Pale was voted as one of the top three Australian craft beers for two consecutive years. Five of their beers were among the Top 25. We’ll drink to that! MUST-TRY Crankshaft #3 - Gabs’ Aussie Craft Beer 2018 Hottest 100 Countdown ADDRESS 38 Mort Street Braddon ACT 2612

CAPITAL BREWING

ZIERHOLTZ

Another brewery that deserves a round of cheers, is Capital Brewing. Their Coast Ale came in at number 15 and they were one of only two breweries to have had six beers in the Top 100. So, if these young guns could impress over 30,000 avid beer lovers from around the country, we’re pretty sure you’ll be impressed too.

Since their inception in 2005, Zierholtz has been proving themselves as Canberra’s Fresh Beer Company. In fact, as the region’s only commercial scale microbrewery, their mission is to turn our capital into CanBeerA. If you’re looking for a German inspired beer with a special Canberra twist, say “Prost!” in Fyshwick.

OUR PICK

CAPITAL COAST ALE Capital Brewing's take on the California Common Ale or Steam Beer, is a hybrid style unique to the US. It's usually brewed with a special strain of lager yeast that works better at warmer (ale-like) temperatures. This method dates back to the late 1800's in California when refrigeration was a great luxury.

WIG AND PEN TAVERN AND BREWERY Although these stalwarts sadly called last rounds at the end of last year, they’re worth a mention as they started making and serving craft beer long before it was even called craft beer. Thanks to them, we’ve developed a taste for quality craft beer before most modern-day hipsters were born.

SCOTT HARGRAVE This former Canberran concreter completed a brewing course at Canberra CIT and won an amateur brewing contest at his first attempt. Scott Hargrave has subsequently moved to the Gold Coast and he’s regarded as the guru of Australia's

burgeoning craft beer industry. He’s now head brewer at the Balter Brewery, who had four beers in the Top 10. Just shows you that a little bit of local inspiration can go a very long way.

Robert Oatley Wilyabrup.

Robert Oatley wines continue to reap rewards and awards for their wines as their talented winemaker Larry Cherubino weaves his magic turning top class grapes into even more exciting wines. Australia’s leading critic, James Halliday, continues to recognise this in awarding Robert Oatley his highest red five star winery rating in his annual Wine Companion and late last year selected the great value Signature Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 in his Top 100 Wines for the year:

“From the warmer districts of Wilyabrup, Carbanup and Cowaramup, matured for 12-15 months in French oak. The climate shows through with velvety mouthfeel, plum and blackcurrant fruit a brocade for the velvet. Small wonder it quickly won two gold medals. Drink to 2032. 95 Points Outstanding Top 20 Reds under $30”

It has since won two more golds including in the Sydney International Top 100 Wine awards, where the wines are judged alongside food – in the manner we get to enjoy them. Another wine show winner is their Signature Riesling 2017 from Western Australia’s Great Southern region, near Albany. This outstanding wine won gold at the WA Wine Show, allowing it entry to the country’s major competition, the 2018 National Wine Show of Australia where it won a further gold medal and the Trophy for the best Riesling of the Show. Both are outstanding value each-way bets – drinking beautifully now but with plenty of potential to age if you have the patience to cellar.

SOVINO WINTER 2019

THE WORLD'S STRANGEST DRINKING RITUALS Although every country around the world enjoys a tipple or two, the different customs could cause some serious consternation. Did you know, for example, that the Western custom of toasting with the phrase “cin cin” wishes you good health in Italy, but in Japan it refers to a man’s genitalia? Here are ten outlandish rituals from around the world. JAPAN BOLIVIA Good things come to those Spirit for the spirit who wait Bolivian miners have a drink Like in a few other Asian cultures, it’s considered rude to pour your own drink or to let someone else pour theirs.

UKRAINE Big shoes to fill At Ukraine weddings, brides must keep their feet on the ground, otherwise their shoes get stolen. Guests will then throw it around the room and drink wine from it.

GEORGIA The anti-toast Although Georgians are known to toast everything, from family and friends to fruit and pets, it’s deemed bad luck to toast with anything except wine, or occasionally, brandy.

CZECH REPUBLIC Clink with care In the Czech Republic you must look each person in the eye, never cross your arms and not spill a single drop when you say cheers, or you’ll be cursed with seven years of bad sex.

before they head out to work. The purity of the drink inspires El Tío (the spirit who roams the mountains in the highland of the country) to keep them safe and bring them good fortune.

RUSSIA Nice to smell you The Russians have many drinking quirks. One such oddity is the act of grabbing the person sitting next to you and sniffing their hair before downing a shot of vodka.

SOUTH KOREA Stand-ins accepted As with many countries all over the world, it is considered rude in South Korea to turn down a drink when one is offered to you. You could however select someone to drink in your place. This act of boozing altruism is then rewarded with a single wish.

MEXICO Pub Crawlers It is a frequent misconception that worms are put into shots of Tequila in Mexico. This, in fact only really happens with mezcal, a smoky spirit made from the maguey plant. Once finishing the bottle of mezcal, it is customary to eat the critter. Bottoms up!

HUNGARY When to drinka Palinka There are only three circumstances in which Palinka can be consumed by Hungarian Gypsies: first thing in the morning before any other activities are completed (including eating breakfast), at a wake (when only men can drink), or when a woman is about to embark on a rubbish scavenging trip.
