Cooroora Connect April 2020

An Initiative of Pomona & District Community House

Cliffhanger election result The undisputed make-up of the new Noosa Council probably won’t be known clearly until 7 April – the final date for postal votes to be accepted and counted – with only two sitting councillors assured of their seat and a rout of all other positions, including that of the mayor, Tony Wellington. He was trailing his rival, Clare Stewart, by the smallest of margins as of 1 April when 60 per cent of the mayoral votes had been counted. With the margin at just 33 votes, the mayoralty is too close to call. Noosa ratepayers have chosen to elect a 2020-24 council of stability and renewal. The immediate task will be to devise a Council Budget stimulus that restores community confidence and a tourismled local economy hit hard by the impact of the Coronavirus crisis. On the counting of votes to date, existing councillors Frank Wilkie and Brian Stockwell, and probably Joe Jurisevic will be returned from a crowded field of 20.

Voted off council is Jess Glasgow (second from right), with Joe Jurisevic (far left) gaining late numbers to be in the top six. The possible new faces on Noosa Council, as of 1 April are pictured above right – 1. Tom Wegener, 2. Phil Moran, 3. Amelia Lorentson, and 4. Karen Finzel, who is in doubt.

They will be joined, probably but not certainly, by three, possibly four new councillors intent on retaining ‘Noosa values’ and lifestyle while growing sustainable industries that will build community resilience.
