New generation volunteers step up Ben Chalmers of Cootharaba (pictured) is a rare bird – a younger generation volunteer supporting our hinterland institutions, in this case the Pomona Railway Station Gallery. Ben is a painter – literally. He recently helped paint the walls, but bashful of his own artistic talent. The 29-year-old is volunteering while he searches for work in the hospitality and retail sales sector, where he has past experience.

A further 30 people from across the district indicated their interest in joining, but did not brave the cold night. A steering committee was formed to consider the proposed new group’s vision, mission statement and priority tasks ahead of possible incorporation.

Noosa Council has extended its rates discount period from 30 days to 60 days to provide some relief for ratepayers during the current tough economic environment. A five per cent discount on the general rate will apply to payments received by 21 August, with a 2.5 per cent discount applying on the general rates component paid by 21 September. Most Noosa ratepayers will pay no more in rates for 2020-21 than they did last financial year after Noosa Council passed a deficit budget with the twin aims of stimulating the economy and directing payments to ‘grass roots’ projects in the hinterland. An unexpected $4.6 million injection of state and federal government funding underpins a $27 million capital works program. Full coverage, pages 16-18.
