Call him King of the Mountain

by Debra Palmen The 2015 King of the Mountain Festival was held in Pomona on 26 July, and it was a terrific success.

The big event of the day was the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, and 108 competitors lined up to race to the top of Mt Cooroora and back. The day was gloriously blue and sunny, although being the hottest July day on record in Queensland wasn’t helpful for such a strenuous and dangerous race.

The outright winner was Hayden Wilde from New Zealand, in an impressive 25:41. Hayden is 17 years old, and the youngest person to ever win the Mountain Challenge. Hayden fought off a dogged challenge from his countryman Shay Williamson to claim the title of King of the Mountain, winning the event 14 seconds ahead of his rival.

The women’s outright winner was local woman Leslie Saunders, in a time of 33:16.

Leslie is a super-fit endurance athlete, and looked remarkably poised and composed as she crossed the finish line.

New owners plan big changes at Pomona servo Expect big changes to the Pomona Servo as new owners, brothers Harry and Garry Guntaka, go about upgrading the premises and expanding the business to meet customer expectations.

Already the affable brothers have extended trading hours to between 5am and 8pm weekdays and from 6am to 8pm at weekends, but the more visible and beneficial improvements will come when new fast-speed pumps are installed and outside signage changes to display Shell branding. That will signal a change of name to Shell Pomona.

However, Harry and Garry stress that the new branding is meant to convey that they source their fuel from a reputable company.

The servo will remain independent and independently-owned, setting its own prices based upon the gate price they pay for petrol.

We want our customers to feel confident that they can buy quality petrol here and our aim is to beat the prices in the market Harry explained. “We may be slightly dearer some weeks, depending on the fuel price cycle, but people will be better off if they stick to us over a year or so.”

The young entrepreneurs learned the fuel service trade at a series of postings throughout the New England region of NSW before taking over the Pomona business about three months ago.

Their academic training also equips them well for business, the pair having studied at Sydney University and the University of Southern Queensland – Harry for a Masters in Accounting and Garry for his Masters in communication.

Harry came to Australia from India in 2008, Garry a year later. After experiencing life in country towns such as Tenterfield and Inverell, they were attracted to Pomona by the prospect of managing their own business, but also because of the friendly town atmosphere and milder climate.

Their shop is friendly and bright, with new lines being added all the time, including bread, fresh milk and newspapers; but also basic supplies for campers and visitors passing through.

Milk and bread lines are a focus, with Harry and Garry hoping that increased sales will allow them to offer keen prices for a fresh product. The hard work is paying off. The brothers have recorded an upturn in takings, but they realise there is room for further improvement.

Some of these are less obvious, such as new caps on underground fuel tanks, which Harry says are in good condition.

Two new fast-delivery pumps will have three fuel hoses either side, and will include Premium Unleaded 98 fuel for the first time. This will reduce queuing at the service apron. A stand-alone diesel pump will be located to a more convenient location. Fuel accounts for business customers are available.

Harry and Garry are excited about their first business venture together. “It is better than working for someone else,” Garry said.

The two look forward to contributing to Pomona town life, through sponsorships of clubs and participation in local groups. Both are keen cricketers.

“We want to demonstrate we do good business here,” Harry said.

Enrol now for Library’s free financial literacy training It can be challenging keeping track of finances in today’s fast-paced world, with rapidly changing technology adding a further layer of complexity to banking and spending.

But help is at hand at Noosa Library for anyone wanting to better manage their finances.

The Library is currently accepting enrolments for its new program Dollars Making Sense.

The program covers topics such as basic cash handling, family budgeting, saving, electronic banking, credit cards and loans, and financial contracts such as those associated with mobile phones and mortgages.

“Providing residents with the skills to manage their money wisely and live within their means is not only invaluable for them and their families, but contributes to the broader economic well-being of communities,” says Heritage Librarian and Literacy Coordinator Jane Harding.

Program participants will receive free one-on-one support from trained volunteer tutors over 18 months,

NOOSA COUNCIL NEWS Collection Date: 17 October Annual bulk rubbish & Lake Macdonald collection begins August 8 Cooroy West of Dath Henderson including Noosa Council's popular bulk kerbside waste collection begins next month.

The annual service to residential properties will begin on 8 August and run to 17 October with a break during the September school holidays.

Noosa Council Waste Manager Wayne Schafer says contractors will visit the Shire's south first, and then work their way north along the beaches, into the urban centres of Noosa Heads, Noosaville and Tewantin, and out to the hinterland.

"Residents must limit their rubbish to three cubic metres per property or unit complex, including no more than one cubic metre of bundled garden waste," Mr Schafer said.

Garden waste must be bundled in order for it to be collected.

This year, Council is offering residents a mattress collection service for a small fee.

"Mattresses have not been included in previous kerbside collections because they can't be compacted in the waste trucks and a few residents have resorted to illegally dumping their mattresses in the bush," Mr Schafer said.

In order to counter this problem, Council will pick up old mattresses on the Friday before the weekend that a street has its kerbside collection, for $20 per mattress.

"Residents should call Council before the Wednesday leading up to their kerbside collection day, provide their details and make payment. Council can then ensure that mattresses are collected, kept separate from other waste and recycled appropriately."

Council will distribute brochures, detailing collection dates, to residents shortly.

“FINE LINES” IN POMONA Meet the Artists! The Pomona Railway Station Gallery is proud exhibit “Fine Lines”. This exhibition is presented by local artists Alice Normand and Dominique Fontana. The official opening will be held on Saturday 8 August at 11:00 am.

After many years of study, Alice found her style and specialized in making Ikebana containers and creating her own glazes. Alice had the opportunity to study ceramics in Japan which was a highlight of her ceramic art career.

Alice came to the Noosa Hinterland in 1997. After getting settled, her interest in ceramic arts resurfaced in her life. She has since been involved with clay artists at Wallace House in Noosa.

Her fascination with Japanese art was rekindled when she came across a book of woodblock prints and decided to transpose these wonderful prints into clay and glazes. These are what she is showing in this special exhibition.

Here she learned the rudiments of perspective and drawing. After developing her own style, Dominique was fascinated by the many interesting

CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL CELEBRATES DREAMTIME You can feel the anticipation and joy of the children already building for Noosa Pengari Steiner School’s vibrant Children’s Festival on Sunday 23 August, at 86 Nyell Rd (off Grays Rd), Doonan from 10am until 3pm.

Now in its 19th year, the theme for this year’s festival is Dreamtime. It will be a day of wholesome family fun and fabulous live entertainment for the whole community.

Festival Committee member Mark DiFabrizio said; “The festival is a celebration of the school community as every family is involved in making the day such a wonderful success. It gives us the opportunity to create some magic for the children and to present the school to all those that have ever wondered what the Steiner school system is all about. As the school is home for the world’s largest bark picture, the impressive artwork inspired this year’s dreamtime theme. Made from bark from the Melaleuca tree, the artwork measures 12m x 2.7m and took more than 61,760 hours to complete. The bark picture will be on display on the day along with a display of work by the students of the Noosa Pengari Steiner School in the school hall.

Your brain is no different than the rest of the muscles in your body - you either use it or you lose it.

The Pomona Pacers, our local Heart Foundation walking group, walk every weekday morning. We do some local town walks as well as venturing into the surrounding trail network. But our group does more than stroll around Pomona - we also enjoy coffee mornings, a monthly moon walk along the Noosa River and other fun events. In the photograph you can see some of our group at the lookout on Black Pinch Road. This was taken recently on one of our further afield Friday jaunts.

The group meets every week day (except public holidays) for walks of 50 to 60 minutes around Pomona. We leave from Pomona Community House at 7 am. If you’d like to join please give Karen a call on 0408 652 821 or simply come along.

PLOD’S PAGE Road Safety Week: From the 16th to 23rd of August, Police state wide will be focussing on traffic safety as part of Qld traffic initiative, Road Safety Week.

Although I know most of you locals play fair in the traffic stakes, this is a heads up that there will be increased targeted enforcement and driver education around this time to try to reduce injury and fatal traffic crashes overall.
