Call him King of the Mountain by Debra Palmen The 2015 King of the Mountain Festival was held in Pomona on 26 July, and it was a terrific success. The big event of the day was the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, and 108 competitors lined up to race to the top of Mt Cooroora and back. The day was gloriously blue and sunny, although being the hottest July day on record in Queensland wasn’t helpful for such a strenuous and dangerous race. The outright winner was Hayden Wilde from New Zealand, in an impressive 25:41. Hayden is 17 years old, and the youngest person to ever win the Mountain Challenge. Hayden fought off a dogged challenge from his countryman Shay Williamson to claim the title of King of the Mountain, winning the event 14 seconds ahead of his rival. The women’s outright winner was local woman Leslie Saunders, in a time of 33:16. Leslie is a super-fit endurance athlete, and looked remarkably poised and composed as she crossed the finish line.
